treatment for children with conditions that affect vision and
hearing and other debilitating disorders of the eyes, ears, nose,
throat, head and neck.”
Esterlina’s hearing aids opened up the world of sound
to her. She was able to receive speech and language therapy
at Massachusetts General Hospital while she also received
rehabilitation services at Shriners Hospital for her burn
injuries. One day while waiting for her during one of her final
appointments with the doctor at Shriners Hospitals for Children
— Boston, there was a small string quartet playing for patients
in the waiting room. This was the first time Esterlina had heard
live music with her new hearing aids. Esterlina was ecstatic and
had a smile from ear to ear. One of the players allowed her to
play his cello. The crowd surrounding her all had tears in their
eyes. A whole new world had opened up for this beautiful girl
with the infectious smile.
Esterlina returned home to the Dominican Republic with
her wounds healed and with a new way to experience and
interact with the world. She will be returning to Boston in a few
months and the whole team looks forward to hearing what she
has to say.
