A Brilliant Strategy<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Muslim Army<br />

It has previously been described how on the first day <strong>of</strong><br />

the battle, the enemy's elephants had caused a great deal<br />

<strong>of</strong> damage to the Muslim army. <strong>The</strong> sight <strong>of</strong> these huge<br />

animals had frightened the Arab horses and driven them<br />

away.<br />

On the second day <strong>of</strong> the battle, Qa' qa ~ met with his<br />

uncle's sons to plan an effective strategy to trick the enemy.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y mounted huge litters on the back <strong>of</strong> the camels and<br />

covered the camels' heads with black veils. In this way the<br />

camels looked quite frightening and appeared to be huge<br />

elephants. When the camels advanced towards the enemy<br />

cavalry, their horses took fright and fled. This afforded<br />

the Muslims a golden opportunity. Qa'qa • ordered his<br />

companions to attack the fleeing Iranian horsemen between<br />

the two battle lines. So on the Day <strong>of</strong> Aghwfi.th, the Muslims<br />

cut down their adversaries like carrots and radishes. This<br />

was the same thing that the Iranians did to the Muslims<br />

on the Day <strong>of</strong> Armiith. When the other commanders <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Muslim troops saw the strategy <strong>of</strong> Qa' qa ~ , they followed<br />

his example.<br />

According to historians, on the Day <strong>of</strong> Aghwath, the<br />

Iranians suffered more than the Muslims had suffered<br />

on the Day <strong>of</strong> Armiith. On the second day, the day <strong>of</strong>
