taken to indicate that he was a poet, then everyone who says anything which<br />
rhymes should also be considered poets. 3<br />
It should be noted that this claim was thoroughly refuted <strong>by</strong> the Qur’aanic<br />
verses which challenged the Arabs to produce something like it, if they believe it<br />
to be the product of human ingenuity.<br />
á ¾Ï&Î#÷VÏiB `ÏiB ;ou‘qÝ¡Î/ (#qè?ù'sù $tRωö7tã 4’n?tã $uZø9¨“tR $£JÏiB 5=÷ƒu‘ ’Îû öNçFZà2 bÎ)ur â<br />
“And if you are in doubt about what I have revealed to My servant then<br />
produce a chapter like it.” (Soorah al-Baqarah, 2: 23)<br />
Their inability to imitate the Qur’aanic style and content was ultimate proof of the<br />
falsehood of their slanderous claim that the Qur’aan was poetry. 4<br />
“I seek refuge…” <strong>by</strong> fleeing from something I fear to what I believe will protect<br />
me from it. This expression carries the strength of an oath. Thus, the act of<br />
seeking refuge is an act of worship which should be directed to Allaah alone. In<br />
this verse He describes Himself as the Lord of humankind saying:<br />
á Ĩ$Ÿ9$# Éb>u Î/ â<br />
“With the Lord of humankind.” Mention of His Lordship (ruboobiyyah) over<br />
humankind includes the fact that He created them, designed them, and He<br />
manages their affairs. He is responsible for their upbringing and their education.<br />
It is He who rectifies and improves their situations and it is He alone who<br />
protects them from harm and guards them from corrupting influences. All of that<br />
can only take place if He has absolute power, shows supreme mercy and desires<br />
only goodness for His creatures. Furthermore, He must possess intimate<br />
knowledge of the finest details of their various situations, while being able to<br />
answer all their prayers and requests, and remove all their calamities and<br />
distress. 5<br />
The Almighty mentioned that He is the Lord of humankind, though He is the<br />
Lord of all creation, for two reasons:<br />
