Vancouver As the Centre of the World, 2009<br />

For L<strong>and</strong>on Mackenzie, Vancouver As the<br />

Centre of the World (2009) is “a cross between<br />

an Elizabethan sea chart <strong>and</strong> a psychedelic<br />

poster.” The work was orig<strong>in</strong>ally commis-<br />

sioned for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic<br />

W<strong>in</strong>ter Games, <strong>and</strong> thus encouraged a chart-<br />

<strong>in</strong>g of course. From Elizabethan sea charts<br />

to network mapp<strong>in</strong>g, Mackenzie embedded<br />

a quasi-history of <strong>cartography</strong>. Incorporated<br />

<strong>in</strong>to the pa<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g are draw<strong>in</strong>gs of Internet<br />

cable systems, shipp<strong>in</strong>g lanes, city ‘grids’ <strong>and</strong><br />

network maps.<br />

Factual <strong>and</strong> fictitious satellites swirl over<br />

top of her flat pa<strong>in</strong>ted plane as she reorganised<br />

a global map around a new center, that of<br />

Vancouver. Eras<strong>in</strong>g national boundaries <strong>and</strong><br />

the dist<strong>in</strong>ctions between l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> oceans, she<br />

also reproduced all cont<strong>in</strong>ents several times <strong>in</strong><br />

reference to the world turn<strong>in</strong>g daily, <strong>and</strong> slowly<br />

flow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to new formations as it has s<strong>in</strong>ce the<br />

earth’s beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g. Challeng<strong>in</strong>g the ideology of<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ard maps, Mackenzie traces the conti-<br />

nents directly from ‘old school’ globes to create<br />

more accurate representations of scale, while<br />

at the same time reconcil<strong>in</strong>g a methodology of<br />

plott<strong>in</strong>g a circular sphere onto a flat rectangu-<br />

lar surface.<br />
