Constra<strong>in</strong>t City – The pa<strong>in</strong> of everyday life, 2007<br />

The urban environment, <strong>in</strong> particular, of<br />

the 21st Century is overlaid with an <strong>in</strong>visible<br />

architecture; it is an architectonic l<strong>and</strong>scape<br />

composed of electromagnetic waves <strong>and</strong> as<br />

such one does not have any real sense of it,<br />

<strong>in</strong> the sense of a direct physical relation to<br />

an architecture while mov<strong>in</strong>g about the city.<br />

This underly<strong>in</strong>g, or overlay<strong>in</strong>g, fact of the<br />

electromagnetic environment, its architec-<br />

tonics, is the orig<strong>in</strong> as well as the material<br />

for Gordan Savicic’s project, Constra<strong>in</strong>t City<br />

– The pa<strong>in</strong> of everyday life (2007).<br />

The piece is a digital art performance<br />

<strong>and</strong> a city-<strong>in</strong>tervention that addresses both<br />

public <strong>and</strong> private space with<strong>in</strong> the realm<br />

of everyday ‘constra<strong>in</strong>ts’. A chest strap<br />

(corset) with high torque servo-motors <strong>and</strong><br />

a -enabled game-console is worn as a<br />

fetish object. The higher the wireless signal<br />

strength of enclosed encrypted networks,<br />

the tighter the corset becomes. Closed<br />

network po<strong>in</strong>ts improve the ‘pleasurable<br />

play’ of tight lac<strong>in</strong>g the performer’s bustier.<br />

In this way, the “ether” constitutes an always<br />

possible pregnant space, a new take on<br />

the art historical notion of the “pregnant<br />

moment” as the space is filled with poten-<br />

tial access-po<strong>in</strong>ts to various networks of<br />

communication.<br />

The project began <strong>in</strong> Vienna, where the<br />

artist recorded his daily journeys over several<br />

hours on a mobile device, wear<strong>in</strong>g the corset.<br />

The collected data was recompiled <strong>in</strong>to<br />

what could be called a schizo-geographic<br />

pa<strong>in</strong>-map which is retrieved from Google<br />

Map servers with automated scripts. In this<br />

way, the artist — <strong>in</strong> a straightjacket — is<br />

able to write <strong>and</strong> read the city code forc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

him to develop a modified underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> perception of the city he negotiates.<br />

Furthermore, this writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g comes<br />

about through literally ‘sens<strong>in</strong>g’ the data,<br />

which is then plotted <strong>and</strong> visualised <strong>in</strong> the<br />

form of a map.<br />

For the artist, the work resembles an<br />

urban <strong>in</strong>terface for an <strong>in</strong>visible city, an archi-<br />

tecture that is subconsciously perceived <strong>and</strong><br />

which is constantly oscillat<strong>in</strong>g as a resonant<br />

l<strong>and</strong>scape of electromagnetic waves. Wireless<br />

networks are the backbone of contemporary<br />

data communications <strong>and</strong> have enabled the<br />

Internet to become (almost) ubiquitous such<br />

that the borders between private <strong>and</strong> public<br />

become <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly disparate. Rather, these<br />

spaces co-exist <strong>in</strong> a parallel space, which may<br />

not be visible, per-se, but is certa<strong>in</strong>ly “felt”,<br />

<strong>and</strong> to vary<strong>in</strong>g extremes.<br />
