SUMMER IS COMING!
Summertime … and the living is easy….
Clearly Ella Fitzgerald hasn’t been
around Lansdowne recently!
Because for the last two summer
seasons we have really ramped up the
programme. I guess to mirror what is
the busiest time of the year for the
South West’s premier holiday
destination.
The town of Bournemouth and the
nearby coastal stretches will play host to
the holiday makers and the various
Festival Events.
So, it’s appropriate that we make the
Summer one of our most effective
seasons for Mission.
By the time you read this, we will have
enjoyed another Community Fun Day
and Beach Service. Two more of which
are planned for July and August. The
first being a Beach Baptism. These have
proved to be very successful in
attracting numbers of passers by who
look on in bewilderment.
Of course, this July sees the annual
Church Camping weekend in Wimborne
and the
Bournemouth
International
Outreach
fortnight. Like
us, Friends International who organize
the programme, recognize that the
summer sees a huge migration of people
from all over the world to the language
schools.
Every Sunday we can look forward to
guests turning up at our services, some
make the pilgrimage to remember a
wedding anniversary or other special
occasion.
One extra treat this July will be an Open
Evening on the site of the new building.
That’s going to be amazing!
So, let’s make the most of the Mission of
God this summer.

Women of Lansdowne, alongside our current Bible Study series, we thought we'd take a leaf
out of Esther's book and throw a right royal feast! You are very warmly invited to
Lansdowne Church Woodbury Avenue on Saturday 15th July for an evening of eats and
treats. You will be welcomed at 7pm with drinks and appetisers, before sitting down to a
menu of Moroccan chicken tagine with rice and roasted vegetables, an assortment of
desserts, and tea or coffee and petits fours to finish. You will learn more about Persian
culture through quiz and testimony, and maybe just a little decoration!
Feel free to dress comfy or don your glad rags, the more Persian the better! The evening will
conclude at 9pm. Tickets are £5 and can be bought at the Saturday Bible Studies or by
emailing saking@btinternet.com

BIO SUNDAY 23 July
Each year, hundreds of international students
flood into Bournemouth to study English at
one of our universities or many language
schools. Lots of them will come from
countries where it is difficult or even
dangerous to find out about Jesus. Jesus told
his followers to go and tell the world about
him – but every year the world comes to our
doorstep! And Bournemouth International
Outreach aims to make the most of this
amazing opportunity.
This month Friends International Dorset are
bringing a team together for 2 weeks, 15 th to
29 th July. Each day we’ll spend time meeting
and inviting students around town, and each
evening we’ll host a café with the opportunity
for guests to explore the claims of Jesus.
Sunday 23 rd July will be “BIO Sunday” at
Lansdowne. Our 10.15 Holdenhurst Road
service will be a special guest service,
specifically designed with our international
friends in mind. And if you have a friend
from another part of the world, feel free to
bring them along!
If you’re at any of our services at Woodbury
Avenue you will be able to meet some of the
BIO team, and hear more about the outreach.
Plus there might be one or two surprises too…

Speak Up May 2017
The Law and Your Gospel Freedoms
The Evangelical Alliance and Lawyers
Christian Fellowship, first port of call
when taking the Speak Up resource on
the road was Moorlands College and
Lansdowne Church.
First up both afternoon and evening, was
Dr David Landrum, Director of Advocacy
for the Evangelical Alliance. David
helpfully sketched the political and
sociological environment, that the
church finds itself confronting today.
We were informed that recent research
concluded that the church whilst not
persecuted in the UK, is experiencing a
hostile hardening. The secular and
sexualisation agenda is not neutral.
There exists now a hierarchy of rights
which has become idolatrous. The
lawyers are the new priests. What
precisely is meant by British values may
be determined in different ways by
different layers of government. Non
violent extremism is another concern for
the authorities. David cited many
examples historically of people who
would be counted as non-violent
extremists, including Jesus.
Yet we live in a country that enjoys some
of the greatest freedoms to share the
gospel anywhere in the world today or
throughout the course of history.
However the challenge before us is to
use those freedoms or we may lose
them.
Mark Barrell, Director of the Lawyers
Christian Fellowship, explained what is
meant by our legal freedoms in a variety
of contexts today. He helpfully drew our
attention to articles 9 and 10 of the
European Convention of human rights.
These set out the freedoms of thought,
conscience and religion and freedom of
expression respectively.
This will not be affected adversely by the
Brexit process. The strength of the legal
protection to speak freely about Jesus
Christ and all topics affecting freedom of
conscience and belief, is very
considerable indeed. Christians should
be reassured that the commitment of
the law to freedom of speech and
freedom of religion is a strong as it has
ever been. It is a jealously guarded
principle.

Rediscovering Joy
3-7 July Bournemouth and Poole Convention
In the forthcoming Bournemouth & Poole
Convention we are very much looking
forward to a week of great Bible teaching
and real fellowship with Christians from
many churches in this conurbation and
beyond.
At the evening
programme, from 3
-7 July at Citygate
Church Centre,
pastor at Grace
Church,
Boroughbridge,
Yorkshire, author of
over 30 books and
previously Research
and Policy Director
for Tearfund UK., Dr
Tim Chester will be
speaking each night from Paul’s letter to
the Galatians, focusing on each of the five
“solas” of the Reformation, 500 years ago.
Tim has written “Rediscovering Joy: The
Dynamic Power of the Reformation in
Galatians”, published this month. He has
also written a new song with Bob Kauflin
of Sovereign Grace Music, to express some
of the key truths of the Reformation.
At the three morning talks, from 5-7 July
at Christ Church Westbourne, Rev.
Alasdair Paine, formerly Vicar of Christ
Church Westbourne and now Vicar of St.
Andrew the Great, Cambridge and a
trustee of Keswick Ministries, is speaking
on “Rediscovering God” in the life of
Elisha from 2 Kings.
There are also two Youth Events alongside
the main meetings at Citygate on 5 th and
6 th July, focusing on “The Power and
People of the Gospel”.

“Intimacy with
God in the
busyness of life
and ministry”.
You are warmly
invited to come,

We are very grateful for all the support
which continues to be given by Lansdowne
volunteers in the convention meetings,
including those in the media team, led by
Stewart King, the music group, DP desk
and the Keith Jones bookstall and
refreshments team. If you would like to
help as a steward, please tell Hilton Jones.
It will be another treasured memory in all
too short a time. So don’t miss the
opportunity that is on our doorstep to
meet and mingle with Christian believers
and worshippers in many of our churches
in the area. We pray that you will have
been encouraged and have rediscovered
joy in the unchanging, awesome God of
the Bible.
There is even more to look forward to in
the Autumn, when, on November 11th,
Rico Tice comes to Moordown Baptist
Church for a day to speak to the men,
encouraging, equipping and engaging
them in evangelism.

Coming together and reaching out
As a church, joining together and
reaching out are two major parts of our
identity as God's people. This summer
we're creating as many opportunities for
these to happen. After being inspired
and motivated to mission by Craig Dyer,
as he reminded us of the beauty of the
great news of Jesus we went straight into
our Community Fun Day, a huge success,
followed by our first Church on the
Beach event. These two activities
enabled us to develop relationships and
share the great news of Jesus with
hundreds of people.
These opportunities will continue over
the summer months and we would love
you to get involved with us.
Summer Festival
Join us on (mostly) Thursday evenings
during the holidays for a range of
events, perfect for bringing friends and
colleagues. We'll be kicking off with a
Quiz Night at Townsend Community
Centre on
Thursday 20 July, with great events each

Baptisms on the Beach
We're really excited to be baptising five
people on the beach on 16 July at
5.30pm. They are proud to be telling the
world that Jesus has changed their lives
- join us to celebrate proclaiming this
great truth with them.
Castle Coffee
If you have extra time during the
summer holidays, why not join us on a
Thursday morning at Woodbury Avenue
for Castle Coffee. We're enjoying
spending regular time getting to know
each other and friends from the
community. We've also just started a Job
Club, supporting those looking for work,
so please be sharing this with those you
know who might appreciate this.

Building Site Guided Tours
14 July 5:30pm-7:30pm
On the evening of the 14 July there will be an opportunity to be shown round the new
building in Lansdowne Road. There has been considerable progress since the last open
day which was held in August 2016. It is intended that all those wishing to attend will be
organised into tours which will be conducted between 5:30pm and 7:30pm. You will be
provided with hard hats and high visibility jackets and would ask that you wear sensible
shoes as it is still effectively a building site. If you would like to be included in the tours
can you please register with the office or online at lansdownechurch.uk/tours no later
than 4 July stating any preference. Exact timings will be issued once we have some idea
of the numbers.
