As a result, you are more likely to become infected if you are exposed to an STD. • Wash your vagina with soap and water after sexual activity This may help to eliminate parasites and bacteria that have entered the vagina. • Urinate after sexual activity This may help to flush out bacteria that have entered the urethra. • Perform regular genital self-examinations To become familiar with the normal appearance of your genitals, this will help you to identify any symptoms that may develop if you are exposed to an STD. • Get regular gynecological examinations (testing for STDs) While this won't stop you from contracting gonorrhea, early detection and treatment can prevent more serious complications from developing. Screening tests can be conducted during routine medical checkups. They are particularly important at the beginning of a new sexual relationship. Perseus Mining donates to fight TB in Ghana BY AGNES ANSAH •Nana Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI, Chief and President of Assin Owirenkyi Traditional Council received the donation on behalf of the National Tuberculosis Control Programme PERSUES MINING Ghana Limited, on Wednesday, donated GH¢215,000.00 to the National Tuberculosis Control Programme (NTP) to help organise the 20th Union Africa Conference on Tuberculosis (TB). The Union African Conference, to be hosted in Ghana this July, aims at accelerating the implementation to end the epidemic of TB and its related diseases as well as tobacco. It would also unearth new findings that could empower stakeholders to fight TB on the continent. Nana Ehunabobrim Prah Agyensaim VI, Chief and President of Assin Owirenkyi Traditional Council, who doubles as the National TB Ambassador and the Board Chairman of Purseus Mining Limited, received the cheque on behalf of NTP and said “TB is curable when resources are available”, hence, his enthusiasm about the donation. The TB ambassador urged corporate Ghana to come on board to support the efforts of the National TB Programme to help the country’s drive towards ending TB before the target year 2035 as set in the Sustainable Development Goals and fulfil the Global end TB Strategic Plan. Mr Stephen Ndede, the General Manager of Persues Mining Limited, said the company was committed to helping eradicate TB in Ghana since the disease affected not only the poor but the rich as well. He said the disease should have been eradicated long ago but lack of resources and support had retarded the process accounting for its high prevalence in the country. Mr Ndede reiterated the need for individuals and stakeholders to join hands in mobilizing resources to end the spread of the disease. The Programme Manager for the National TB Control Programme, Dr Frank Bonsu, who received the cheque on behalf of the Union, commended Perseus Mining for their financial support and described the gesture as the first of its kind to help create awareness, remove stigma and prevent TB. “We have never ever, in the lives of the National TB Control Programme, seen a single company donating such an amount to help fight the disease,” he added. Dr Bonsu noted that Ghana was chosen to organise the conference due to its immense contribution towards the fight against TB. He explained that Ghana has introduced unique innovation to help in the swift detection of one’s status regarding TB, which will offer other participating countries the opportunity to observe and learn from Ghana Dr Bonsu said the programme would also be used to demystify the disease, mobilize resources and create more awareness to end it. ‘Digni-loo’ plastic toilet technology launched A ‘DIGNI-LOO’ plastic toilet technology aimed at helping communities to prevent open defaecation has been launched. The launch was held in Accra last Tuesday, June 20. The technology was initiated by the Global Communities, an international non-governmental organisation, in collaboration with Duraplast Ghana Limited under the auspices of USAID. It would be piloted by the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resource (MSWR) through Public Private Partnership. A Director at the MSWR, Mr Joseph Amoah, who launched the concept, said the government was committed to ensuring clean environment to eliminate unhealthy practices, hence the adoption of the initiative to avoid indiscriminate defaecation. Mr Amoah expressed regret that the country had been characterised by poor environmental sanitation due to unhygienic attitude of the people and had resulted in diseases. “The situation, if allowed to go unchecked, can have serious adverse effects on the sustainability of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo’s objective of making Accra the cleanest city in Africa,” he stated. The Director said the filth that had engulfed towns and cities could easily be prevented if Ghanaians could make serious observation of environmental cleanliness. He said so much resources had been committed into the provision of a number of sanitation facilities as well as education at all levels, yet nothing had been achieved. Mr Amoah said the MSWR was considering the re-introduction of the “Sama Sama” concept and make adequate resources available to the Environmental Health Officers to carry out their mandate of checking insanitary conditions in the communities. “This, we believe, will be one of •Some participants at the launch the most effective means by which we can deliver a clean, safe and healthy environment for the benefit of the people,” he said. He expressed gratitude to Duraplast Ghana Limited and the Global Communities for the Digniloo idea to complement the efforts of the government to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 6. Mr Alberto Wilde, the Country Director of Global Communities, said the Digni-loo initiative was part of the USAID Water, Access, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project. He said it was to support and improve hygiene in communities to avoid open defaecation. Mr Wilde said Digni-loo is a plastic slab and described it as affordable, durable and easy to install and re-usable. The United States Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Robert P. Jackson, who graced the occasion, said Ghana is a priority country for USAID’s sanitation project and that the WASH programme had improved sanitation for more than 50,000 Ghanaians. He said, “At USAID, our approach is to educate communities on the importance of sanitation and let them take the lead. “Even ground breaking hardware like the Digni-loo is not solution on its own, but sweeping sustainable change in Ghana will require millions of Ghanaians to change their behaviour,” Mr Jackson said.
