FDA Targets US$50M for Liberia’s

Forest Sector

By David A. Yates

To play a pivotal

role in

managing

Liberia’s forest

resources

and its strategic plan

(2018-2030), the government

through the Forestry

Development Authority

(FDA) has disclosed that

the institution is targeting

US $50 million to help

improve the sector.

FDA is a state corporation

established by an

Act of the Legislature in

1976 with the mandate

to ensure the sustainable

management and conservation

of Liberia’s forest

and related natural resources

for the benefit of

current and future generations.

At a well-attended

press conference at his

Red-light office, C. Mike

Doryen, FDA Managing

Director, said the sector is

making progress in ensuring

that it works better for

the good of the citizens.

He revealed that several

donors have already

committed the amount

of US $28 million for the

improvement of the sector.

He said the U.S. government

has already

committed the amount

of $20 million to the sector

exclusively, while the

Swedish government has

also provided the additional

US $8 million.

Mr. Doryen, who is

seeking all means to ensure

that the forests are

well protected to generate

revenue for Liberia,

stated that for now, the

government has received

in total the amount of US

$28 million out of the targeted

US $50 million.

"By the middle of next

month, we will formally

launch that program even

though activities are going

on under it, but we

just hope that President

Weah can be part of the

launching ceremony. So

you see the kind of intervention

we are doing at

FDA? "he asked.

Mr. Doryen's comments

also come barely a week

ago when FrontPage Africa

reported that failure

to attend a donor conference

in Cote d’Ivoire put

Liberia at risk of losing

FDA Managing Director C. Mike Doryen: “the sector

good of the citizens.”

the US $16.8 million that

donors had agreed to give

for the conservation of Tai-

Grebo-Krahn Sapo Park.

He added, "We are saying

from January to December

2022, our target is a US $50

million grant minimum. As

I speak to you, we are in the

second quarter of the year

and we have gone halfway

through the year. Donors

have already committed the

US $28 million to the forest

sector, and that is the kind

of work that we are doing

here. "

With these prospects, Mr.

Doryen lauded President

George M. Weah for promoting

the sector out there

and for lobbying.

He also used this medium

to express gratitude to his

staff and partners for working

on and putting FDA

strategies plans into action

to ensure that they follow a

path that will lead the country

to receive more overseas

development assistance.

The FDA boss continued,

"So I can also tell you that

we might exceed the US

$50 million because one of

our traditional partners in

delegation, the EU ambassador

expressed satisfaction

with the level of investment

into Port efficiency being

done by APM Terminals Liberia.

He said such investments

have the potential of unlocking

new frontiers of trade

facilitation between Europe

and Liberia and most importantly

demonstrates the commitment

of APM Terminals

to honor the terms of their

concession agreement.

the sector, the EU, and we

have been discussing the

sector and we have been

making significant progress

in our discussion, and

as we stand, we await their

commitment, that would

come maybe by the end of

the year."

Mr. Doryen told newsmen

that during President

Weah's recent visit to Brussels,

he received a commitment

of US $191 million,

and a significant portion of

that money will be allotted

to the forest sector.

Going forward, he stated

that the German government

has also committed

to helping the sector along

with the French Development

Agency, where "we

put several options before

them and they are looking

into it and promised they

would come." We've also

had meetings with European

Development Banks,

and they're on their way.

So as you can see, we have

goodwill lying out there,

which is why people envy

us for our forest. "

“So we know the significance

of our forest, and in

international relations or

development, we normally

refer to such things as a

competitive advantage,

especially in the age of climate

change when our forest

can be a factor in mitigation.

So that’s how much

money we have committed

“With my colleagues from

the Member States of the

European Union, I was impressed

with the ambitious

agenda pushed by APM

Terminals Liberia, a European

company, to develop

the activity and improve

the services at the Freeport

of Monrovia, in a joint effort

with all stakeholders.

The digitalization of port

and customs formalities will

speed up import and export

processes and reduce costs

for stakeholders.

“The dredging of the port

will address a vital and urgent

threat to port activities

and allow access to bigger

vessels, bringing costs

down. Further planned investments

show the commitment

of APM Terminals

Liberia to honor the terms

of their concession agreement

and to serve the interests

of the economy and the

people of Liberia.” Amb.

Delahousse remarked.

roots, APM Terminals

and industrial partnerships

that can be brought about

through Europe-Africa collaborations.

now and that’s how much

money we expect to come

to us in the next month,

so nobody should tell you

that we are losing money,"

he said.

The FDA boss continued,

"In fact, we are getting

more money than at

any time in the history of

this country besides the US

$150 million commitment

that was made by the Norwegian

government. Onlyy

US $37 million of that

money came to Liberia,

but we still look forward to

engaging them to see how

they can also bring the remaining

money. "

According to him, Liberia

has the remaining and

largest portion of the forest

that is in the region, adding

that, "almost 50% and yes,

we have had challenges,

but we are taking significant

steps and measures to

address those challenges,

and generally we are succeeding."

He concluded, "This is

one of the most exciting

things in the sector and

there are a lot of things

happening, so we think the

media is important also to

inform our people out there

about the development taking

place under my regime

at FDA."

DISTRICT 8 ASPIRANT PLEDGES

TO WORK HAND IN HAND WITH

DISTRICT RESIDENTS

Macaulay Sombai, Sombai.macaulaysombai@FrontPageAfricaonline.com-0777217428

Monrovia

An aspirant of

District #8

Montserrado

County has

pledged to work handin-hand

with residents

of the district to put

together ideas that

could help move the

district forward in the

areas of good health

care, better security,

vocational education,

and the prevention of

voter trucking.

Said Cooper: “The

health care we are

planning to put together

for our people within

District 8 would be to

mobilized by elders board

of the district and they

will be consist of seven

members that will recruit

five persons from each of

the 22 communities in

the district and they will

serve as trackers for their

respective community to

follow up women of child

bearing ages and breast

feeding mothers as well

as children under the age

of five.”

“During our discussion

with the community

dwellers, we clearly

looked at those two

groups of people in the

area of financial support

for their healthcare

services in the various

healthcare facilities and

so each of the women in

District 8, will be able to

obtain an identification

card that would carry

the name of District 8

Social Health Initiative

Program and with

that, we are going to

easily identify all of our

members of the district.”

Cooper described

voter trucking as a gross

violation of residents not

only from his district but

for the entire country and

he is calling on residents

of District 8 to work

together in their struggle

to petition members of

the House of Senate and

House of Representative

for a bill that would

be passed into law to

abolish voter trucking

during elections.

District 8 consists of

22 communities and

aspirant Cooper is calling

on residents of each

of the 22 communities

not to allow people

who are not part of

their communities to

register for the 2023

general and presidential

elections in the district

because, according to

him, it will not be fair

for them as residents

of their communities to

allow people who are not

residents of their district

to be given the advantage

to vote in the upcoming

2023 elections.

Said Cooper: “I’m

making this call to

members of this district

and the country at large

because if we allow for

voter trucking to go on in

our respective districts,

we all will not be able

to elect people of our

choices so, please let us

not allow us to be used by

people who are not from

our districts to register

in our districts.

“If you say you are

from Block ‘A’, that block

leader will know all of

the key residents of that

block, and failure on the

part of anyone wishing to

cast vote without being

part of that block family

members will surely be

denied.”

“We are going to push

this advocacy to the

national legislature, with

NEC, with diplomatic

missions in the country

so that they all will join

us to get rid of voter

trucking and focus on

the importance of voter’s

rights.”
