BELINDA Elikplim Chamenyi, a

Level 200 Law student, has made

Wisconsin International

University College, Ghana (WIUC-

Ghana) very proud by being selected to

chair a committee to prepare African

participants for the Model United

Nations (MUN) international events in

2019.

This achievement follows her

participation in the 16th Session of the

Oxford International Model United

Nations (OxIMUN) held at Oxford

University in the United Kingdom (UK) in

October 2018. Indeed, she was the only

representative from Ghana at the

OxIMUN 2018 Conference.

The MUN events are hosted by

Harvard, Yale, Cambridge and Oxford,

arguably among the world’s most

prestigious universities.

And to have a student of WIUC-

Ghana chair a committee to prepare

African participants for such august

events in 2019 is a big achievement that

deserves prominent flagging.

It is in this regard that Wisconsin

News congratulates Belinda for making

Wisconsin and Ghana proud in

international circles.

We believe her achievement will

inspire other students of Wisconsin and,

indeed, the whole country, to demonstrate

their talent and endeavour to compete

with their contemporaries across the

world.

Wisconsin News further believes the

achievement of Belinda strongly

challenges the negative perception some

people hold about the quality of private

tertiary institutions.

If in the midst of acclaimed Law

Faculties, particularly the public

institutions, she could excel in an

international conference of prestige such

as the OxIMUN, it leaves no doubt that

private universities, and WIUC-Ghana in

particular, have quality worth

acknowledging.

Once again, we say kudos to Belinda

and wish her more and bigger successes in

her future endeavours.

Studio At Last!

In our second editorial, we find it a

refreshing news that the School of

Communication Studies (SCS) of WIUC-

Ghana now has a studio ready for the

training of students in broadcast

journalism and other forms of

communication.

The studio is equipped with ultramodern

facilities, and we can say on

authority that only a few communication

training institutions in Ghana have such

facilities to train students.

Wisconsin News believes the provision

of the studio underlines the

determination of the university

authorities to ensure the training of highgrade

communication professionals.

We, therefore, wish to express

profound gratitude to the university

authorities for this laudable initiative. It

is our fervent hope that they will continue

to provide the needed support to the

various faculties to enhance teaching and

learning.

While urging students to take full

advantage of the opportunity the studio

presents to develop their potential, we

appeal to them to maintain the facility by

strictly adhering to the rules governing

the use of studios at all times.

Surely, WIUC-Ghana is on the right

Security

Tit-Bits

How to improve

home security

JUST as we are alerted

through our body

systems when we are

hungry, thirsty or feel

the edge to visit the

washroom, so is the

work of warning lights

on a vehicle’s dashboard.

Dashboard warning lights

convey very important information

to drivers and alert them of

potential dangers. But the question

is: are drivers aware of what these

essential signs mean?

not too long ago, a gentleman

walked to my office with an

interesting story. He saw a warning

light on the dashboard of his car. He

did not know the meaning of the

light but he knew every dashboard

warning light indicates a problem.

So immediately, he sent the car

to a mechanic to check for him. He

was charged Ghc250 but the light

was still there. He took the car to

another mechanic with the same

problem and he was charged Ghc150

but the warning lights did not

disappear.

His decision to come to my office

was to get recommendation to an

efficient garage and the cost

implication in order to prepare

adequately for that service.

I went with him to his car to see

the kind of warning light that was

troubling him. When I saw the

warning light, I smiled and asked

him to go across the road, talk to the

vulcanizer there to check the

pressure for all the four tyres of the

vehicle.

I added that I was little busy so

he should go and do that first and by

the time he finished, I would be less

busy to attend to him.

He came back smiling and told

me the warning light was gone. And

I told him that was his problem all

this while. The warning light in

question was Tyre Pressure warning

light.

This warning light has nothing

to do with a mechanic or an auto

electrician; neither should it cost an

individual or an organization

Ghc400 to fix. But because many

drivers do not know these signs and

some mechanics also have no or

little knowledge about them, it cost

us so much for something we can do

personally or at a very low cost.

Complex modern cars

Modern cars are becoming

increasingly more complex with the

addition of new technologies and

features.

These new features come with

symbols as a form of

communication between the

vehicle and the driver.

They inform the driver on many

things, from oil shortage and engine

fault to somebody not wearing

seatbelt.

It is very good to know what they

mean but it is important to know

the best cause of action to take

when the dashboard warning lights

show up, since failure to act quickly

or properly can result in damage to

the vehicle or even injury.

If any of these lights fail to go off,

it means there is an issue with the

system it represents.

Brake system warning lights

/ brake fluid warning light

The brake is arguably the most

important feature on a vehicle. So if

there is a warning light flashing on

your dashboard highlighting there

is something wrong with the

braking system, it is important to

check it out immediately.

Any of these lights warns you

about the braking system. It also

mean you have engaged the parking

brake.

Charging system warning

light / Battery warning light

You should see your battery

charge warning light when you first

turn your car engine on. But if it

does not go out a few seconds after

the engine starts, then there could

be a problem with your car’s

electrical system.

This may be due to a faulty

alternator, faulty battery, bad

connection or damaged

cabling somewhere in the

engine bay.

If your car battery is not

charging when moving (the job of

the alternator), then you could

eventually run out of electrical

power and grind to a halt.

At worst, the light could be on

due to an alternator drive belt

braking. Other systems, such as the

engine coolant pump, or power

steering, also use this belt. So the

effects of a failure here could be

compounded.

Power steering system

warning light

The power steering warning

light will illuminate if your fluid

levels are low or if there is a fault

within the system.

Check power steering fluid levels

and top-up if necessary. If fluid

levels continuously fall, there may

be a leakage in the system.

Steering is possible without the

aid of power steering although it

may become difficult at low speeds.

The founder and President

He gave the advice at the 2018

According to Mr Tetteh, the initiative

started last year and the idea was to

mobilize the youth to start thinking

so many opportunities in the

agribusiness sector, especially for the

youth.”

He said after his national service in

“You can do it part time or full time.

This programme is to teach them, share

experiences, network and mentor,” he

said.

After the second year of organizing the

Agribusiness Dialogue, Mr Tetteh believes

the feedback had been good, adding that

there may be the need to go nationwide,

given invitations received from the Volta

and northern regions.

He revealed plans to explore

Agriculture Tourism potentials that

would allow participants to tour farms,

processing centers, factories and other

sectors in the agriculture value chain to

inspire them to go into agriculture.

Wisconsin news interacted with some

of the participants after the programme.

One of them, Madam Yaganoma

Baatuolkuu, the Founder of Wanjo Africa,

said she was happy to be part of the event,

adding, “There were so many experts with

lots of information and knowledge that

were shared and I even regret for not

coming earlier than I did.”

Wanjo Africa is an agribusiness firm

that deals in traditional food crops,

particularly non-cash crops which are

processed into beverages, sauces, jams and

other products.

For his part, Mr emmanuel Ampadu,

the Chief executive Officer and Cofounder

of Pure and Just Food Company

Ltd, said the programme was very

informative and insightful.

“We have learnt a lot and I think we

need more of such programmes. Africa

has 60-70% of the world’s viable lands and

the most energetic young workforce, so if

we don’t take advantage of agriculture to

develop as a continent, it will not help us,”

he said.

The Pure and Just Company Ltd

processes dry tropical foods, including dry

mango, dry banana and dry pineapple for

sale.

Another participant, Mr Isaac Senyo

from Koforidua, said the programme

provided a very good opportunity for him

to bounce back into agribusiness after his

initial failure.

He said he was fascinated by the

container farming concept which did not

require a large piece of land but just a

small space, even in a rented house, to do

farming.

1. Patience Is Important

Don’t sweat the stuff you

can’t control. Life is much too

short to be angry & annoyed all

the time. Did you miss your bus?

no worries, there will be another

one. ATMs out of money?

Great! Take an unplanned road

trip over to the next town and

explore. Sometimes freakouts

happen regardless.

Just take a deep breath and

remind yourself that it could be

worse.

2. Wake Up Early

Rise at sunrise to have the

best attractions all to yourself

while avoiding crowds. It’s also

a magical time for photos due to

soft diffused light, and usually

easier to interact with locals.

Sketchy areas are less dangerous

in the morning too. Honest

hardworking people wake up

early; touts, scammers, and

criminals sleep in.

3. Laugh At Yourself

You will definitely look like a

fool many times when traveling

embarrassed, laugh at yourself.

Don’t be afraid to screw up, and

don’t take life so seriously.

Once a whole bus full of
