Administration’s Message
Welcome to the first edition of the Bernie Wolfe Community School Newsletter for the 2011-
2012 school year.
Wow, we are well into the first term and it is proving to be a very exciting filled year here at
Bernie Wolfe Community School. Students are now familiar with the routines and procedures
and have settled in to what will be a very successful year for them.
Students will be receiving their first term report card on Friday, November 25. The Parent
/Teacher conferences will be held during the evening of Wednesday, November 30, and
Thursday, December 1 and on the morning of Friday, December 2. At school teachers are in
the process of having students reflect on their first term, set goals for the second term and
establish an action plan to achieve those goals. We ask that all of you find the time to
accompany your child to school to celebrate their successes and help them with their plans for
improvement. We are looking forward to seeing all of you.
As you are aware technology is playing more and more of a role in our lives. To that end I
would invite you to visit our school web site and take a few minutes to review it. One of the
features is your child’s teacher site. These sites may be accessed by clicking on the Log
in tab. User name: bwuser, password: Blazers1. We are also hoping to create a
parent/guardian distribution list. This would allow us to electronically keep you informed
about school wide events, send out reminders and send you the school newsletter via email.
To create our distribution list, we will be collecting your email address at our first parent/
teacher conference.
Attendance of our students at Bernie Wolfe Community School is a school wide focus. We ask
that you work with us in ensuring that your child attends school on a very regular basis. In the
event that your child needs to be absent, please call the school and let us know. This will help
the school with the call backs and it also helps to ensure that your child is safe.
At Bernie Wolfe Community School we offer a wide variety of extracurricular activities for our
students to extend their school experience. We know that there is a positive correlation
between student involvement and achievement at school. We also know that if parents are
engaged in their children’s education the more connected their child will be to school.
Therefore, we ask that you not only encourage your child to be involved in the many programs
offered at Bernie Wolfe Community School, but, that you also take the opportunity to be
actively involved in the school’s day to day life. We invite you to be a part of the Parent
Advisory Council, Transcona Parent Ukranian Education, The Parent Lunch Committee or just
volunteering. If you wish to find out how to get involved please contact our community
connector Debra Kutzan, your children’s teacher or Administration at the school.

Community Police Relations Unit
October, 2011
Dear Parents/Guardians:
I am the School Education Officer for Bernie Wolfe Community School. It has come to my attention that the
school is experiencing problems with parents/guardians who park/stop/drive their vehicles contrary to clearly
posted signs in the area surrounding the school.
Just for your information, the signs that read “No Stopping” mean just that. If a vehicle is found stopped in
these areas an Offence Notice (ticket) may be issued to that vehicle. It does NOT matter if you stop for just a
few seconds to drop off or pick up your child. If your vehicle stops in these areas, you can be issued a ticket for
$35.00.
In the case where the sign reads “No Right Turns Except School Bus” parents/guardians canNOT turn into
the bus loop for the purposes of loading or unloading. The school has been experiencing a number of vehicles
disobeying this sign and enforcement has taken place in the past and will continue to take place. The fine for
this offence is $199.80.
It is very difficult for the Commissioners and members of the Winnipeg Police Service to monitor each and
every school in the city. As a result, School officials also monitor these types of infractions. If a vehicle is seen
continually stopping/parking contrary to these signs, School Officials have been instructed to forward me the
plate number of the offending vehicle. Registered Owners of these vehicles may receive a ticket if they fail to
change their driving habits after the first warning.
It is obvious there are a number of parents out there that feel these clearly posted signs do not apply to them,
but they do apply to all motorists. The purpose of these signs is to keep your children safe, especially our
school patrols. Please be a part of the solution and abide by traffic control signs/devices in school zones.
When you disobey the clearly posted signs, you are putting your children’s lives and safety at risk.
Remember: Safety over convenience
Thank you for your cooperation
School Ambassadors
Bernie Wolfe’s Ambassadors to Attend WE Day Celebration
On November 23 rd the Ambassadors group along with teachers, Mrs. Cheys and Mrs. Aisicovich, will be
involved in a unique event called Free The Children's We Day to be held at MTS Center. This is an opportunity
for Bernie Wolfe students to make an impact on local and global change. Students will become a part of this
important movement to help our community and others around the world. This program “celebrates the
power of young people to create positive change, We Day is a day-long event that ignites a year-long
educational program for change, called We Schools in Action. Young people from across North America come
together to celebrate the positive actions they are taking and to launch a movement of youth working for
social change. Through messages from world-renowned celebrities, speakers and musicians, young people not
only learn about a diverse range of current issues, they gain the inspiration and knowledge needed to act. “If
you would like more information about this event, please feel free to look at the web site @ www.weday.com
Physical Education
Middle Years X-Country
Congratulations to all the students that competed at the Birds Hill x-country run
on October the 6 th . This year was particularly special as the Grade 7 boys were
crowned divisional champions and the grade 6 boys finished in second place.
Team members from grades 6 to 8 included Kelton S, Noah L, Dillon M, Travis P, Braeden M, Jon M,
Mason L, Bryson G, James L, Jordan S, John Q, Raeden B, Dawson S, Brandon U, Adrian G, Austin
Allergies
There are numerous students in our school that have been identified and diagnosed with life threatening
allergies and would have an anaphylactic reaction if exposed to certain allergens. Although we know that we
cannot guarantee an allergy -free environment, we would like to minimize the risk of exposure to allergens for
these students.
The following list of items are allergens for one or more students in the school:
 Peanuts
 Tree nuts
 Walnuts
 Coconut
 Seafood
 Fish
 Shrimp
 Eggs
We are asking that students avoid bringing these items into the school. River East Transcona School Division
has policies related to anaphylaxis and these policies can be found on the Divisional website by going to
Parents & Community, clicking on Documents and Forms, then Policy manual, scroll down to Section J
Students and then click on section JLCG-R1 and JLCG-R2.
It is also important that your child understands the seriousness of life-threatening allergies and is encouraged
to be supportive and respectful of the student with the allergies. We appreciate your assistance in this matter
and if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact your child’s teacher or myself. Thank you.
THANK YOU for helping us to provide a safe environment
Over the past number of years at BWCS, we have been working hard to keep our students safe as
they walk and cross the streets to and from school. While our safety patrols work to encourage the
students to cross carefully we all have to do our part.
How can our Parents Help?
We ask that if you need to park when you are bringing your child to school, to park either on Rougeau
or Hatcher. Note the various ‘No stopping’ signs on the street as these were installed so students
would be safely dropped off and picked up at school. Parents should not stop or park at the Stop Sign
on Hatcher and Rougeau.
Do not park in our neighbours’ driveways or in front of their driveway. We need
to respect their property and their right to come and go from their property
without obstructions.
There is no stopping or parking on Bournais Drive or in the bus loop.
The loop is for buses and emergency vehicles only.
Remind your children that they are to use the cross walks at all times. This is
especially important if you are parking on Rougeau and they need to cross
the street.
If parents need to drop their students closer to school they may enter the parking lot and use the
spaces at the far west end of the lot. Remember to walk with your children in the parking lot as it
can get very busy (especially at 3:30). Remember to only park in the west (far) end of the parking
lot. You cannot park in numbered staff parking stalls during school hours.
If you have relatives or friends picking your child up from school, please share this information with
them.

Debbie Kutzan and I am the Community Connector here at Bernie Wolfe. I am very
excited about this year.
Stay N’ Play is taking place on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:15 starting on
October 19. Stay n’ Play is an opportunity for parents, grandparents or caregivers
and children to explore and learn through crafts, play and sharing time. Free play
will give you time to enjoy a cup of coffee and interact with other members of the
community. Healthy snacks are provided. This program will run until December 14 and
then will resume January 25.
On the evening of December 20 our school will be filled with fun. We are hosting a FAMILY HOLIDAY
CRAFT NIGHT. This evening event offers different crafts for parents and children to participate in,
snacks and an opportunity to interact with families. All children in attendance must be accompanied by an
adult. Further details of the fun will follow.
Volunteers are the back bone of any community. There are many great opportunities to get involved in
Bernie Wolfe. You can spend time helping a teacher in a classroom or help drive a sports team to a game.
A note will be coming home with your child listing a number of ways to get involved. Please take time to
read it and get involved. All volunteers MUST complete a Child Abuse Register form, which can be picked
up in the office.
There are many great ways to be part of our Bernie Wolfe community. If you have any ideas or a
question I can be reached through the office at 958-6532 or email dkutzan@retsd.mb.ca. I am looking
forward to getting to know the children and their families and helping to create a Belonging Welcoming
