When we think about careers in the water industry the most
obvious roles are as Operations or Engineering personnel.
Not that these roles aren’t essential and vital to the
operation of any water or wastewater utility but the careers
that support these roles often go unnoticed.
Depending on the size of the utility that you work for you will
be exposed to people working in all kinds of disciplines.
There will be in-house expertise at large utilities and
contractors of various types at smaller centres. The support
of the skilled trades, millwrights, electricians, and
instrumentation people is essential to operations and
engineering staff to keep plants, distribution and collection
systems running smoothly.
We have educators at all levels of institutions that have
dedicated themselves to the advancement of water
professionals. There are professors, trainers, college
instructors and on-line course developers improving our
understanding of water and wastewater systems.
We often forget the technical people that assist in the
operations of our facilities. We have CAD operators that keep
our drawings up to date, laboratory technologists that
confirm that our processes are performing to meet
requirements and programmers that keep our SCADA
systems functioning.
Then there is the invisible layer of people that keep the water
flowing which includes the regulators, the policy makers, the
volunteers that sit on drinking water guideline committees,
technical committees and the HR Professionals that hire all of
us.
Each of us is a spoke in the wheel that keeps the water
flowing. Each job is essential to providing a quality product
to our customers and our community. Let us recognize and
support each other as a team working together for quality
water.
