Always THINK Safety
We know that safety is important at work. We
have toolbox talks and pre-job safety
meetings to clearly convey how we are going
to get tasks done safely. We fill out field level
risk assessments and safe work plans to help
deliver the point that safety is an important
and integral part of any company. Safety
should not start when we arrive to work and
then stop when we leave. Safety should be
with us twenty-four hours a day.
Even at home we should
remember the fundamental
elements of our safety
initiative. Stay focused, plan
the tasks out thoroughly
and have the necessary
controls in place to
eliminate any hazards. I am
reminded of this as I was
hanging up pictures for my wife on the walls
in our new house going up the stairs. Before
we started hanging up the pictures we had
to have all the right tools and materials to
complete the job. I did not yet own
a ladder but I knew that we
were going to need
something so I could climb
up and hang the pictures.
While I was in Home
Depot getting dry wall
anchors and screws I
looked at the ladders
and I bought the
appropriate one to get the
job done safely. I knew that
I did not want to stand on a
chair while drilling holes in the
wall. I thought about the job and I
bought the necessary items to safely
complete it.
I did not sit down and write out a formal
process and review that process with my
wife; however, I did go over what I needed
help with before beginning the process. My
wife was handing me up the drill or the
hammer when I needed it. She helped me
get the holes on the back of the frames lined
up to the screws so they could hang on the
wall. At the end of the day we had safely
hung over 20 different pictures.
If you are working safely at your job do not
stop when you leave. Take that part of your
job home with you. At work we know that we
should never use a grinder without a guard.
Why would you ever use a grinder without a
guard when at home? You may not get in
trouble from your supervisor at home for not
doing something the safe way, but that does
not mean it is the right thing to do. Wearing
safety glasses when you’re cutting down
trees, mowing the grass or hammering a nail
is best practice. You are asked to wear safety
glasses at work so continue that mentality of
wearing them at home. If you have small
children and they see their parents wearing
safety glasses while mowing the grass there
is a much greater probability that your
children will grow up doing the exact same
thing.
How we complete tasks at home
should be done in the same
manner as it is at work. We
should all think about the
consequences of not
working safely and have
a plan to help eliminate
the possibilities of
getting hurt or injured.
Do not jeopardize your
safety at home to get a
task done quickly. Always
plan how to perform the
task in a safe manner and get
the necessary tools to complete
the task.
Safety has no quitting time. Safety is essential
to our well-being and should always be a
priority when completing any task. In the end
you will thank yourself for a job safely done.
Think Safe. Work Safe. Stay Safe.
