Well Spring is almost upon
us, March marks another
World Water Week and this
year we have a special event planned to celebrate
working in water. This year the SWWA, and WCW have
joined forces to host a casino night fundraiser with all the
proceeds being split between our two water charities
WaterAid and Water for People. The Summer Pipeline will,
have all the highlights of the special event and I am
hoping to see many of you out to support the event.
Working in water is a limitless career; the theme of this
year’s World Water Week is Careers in Water. As an aging
population of water operators and others involved in the
field, it is always a good thing to see the focus on the
careers out there available to young people or even the
not so young looking for a change. We worked especially
hard for this edition to include more than the usual
profiles as we wanted to really celebrate how fantastic it
is to work in water.
Albert Einstein once said, “I have no special
talents, I am only passionately curious.”
Passion is what drives us to do our best no matter how
often we feel undervalued and underappreciated.

What are you most passionate about when it comes to
working in the industry? Why do you do the job you do?
What would you say to someone looking to get into the
field? We want to know what makes you passionate and
what better way than to fill out a member profile for the
Pipeline. The SWWA Pipeline Magazine receives over
5000 hits within the first week it is posted on the website.
Now we definitely do not have 5000 members so who is
looking at the magazine? Well, anyone who is searching
for information in the industry can find us by simply
typing in water, wastewater, poop, pipes etc. in the search
engine of the Internet search. Now, I personally think that
is awesome, who knows who you are encouraging to join
the industry with your words of passion about your
career field.

SWWA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Of course I would’ve loved to wish a Happy 2016 to
all of our SWWA members. Unfortunately, recent
events in the small town of La Loche in northern
Saskatchewan has cast a somber cloud on the first
part of the new year. The SWWA executive would
like to join our entire membership in passing along
our thoughts and prayers to those affected in the
tragedy.
Welcome to a new year and new opportunities for
our SWWA membership. Our training coordinator
has put together an excellent line-up of workshops for the first
half of 2016, so be sure to sign up early to get your training and CEU’s. I cannot
stress how important it is to maintain your education and certification in your
respective fields. Global events such as the wastewater discharge into the St.
Lawrence River and the current disaster going on in Flint, Michigan only
strengthens the fact that the water/wastewater industry is one of the most closely
scrutinized professions in the world. There is no such thing as ‘too much training’,
and the more educated you become, the better you become at solving problems,
should they arise.
I recently attended the annual conference for the Manitoba Water & Wastewater
Association. I spent several days with our counterparts to the east, and was able to
share and compare the issues and the successes that we all have in common.
Originally I wasn’t too thrilled at the thought of Winnipeg in February, but as it
turned out, the weather was quite mild, and the conference itself was a great
experience and I thank the MWWA board for inviting me. I will also have the
pleasure of representing the SWWA at the Alberta conference in Banff this March.
I know, it’s a dirty job, but someone’s got to do it!
I’d wager that I’m not the only one looking to take advantage of our relatively mild
winter to hopefully get a jump on the golf season as spring approaches. On that
note, be sure to get your swing in shape for the annual golf tournament which is
scheduled for June 3rd at Jackfish Lake! Now that I have a firm grasp of the
Champion’s trophy, it will be next to impossible to tear it away from me, best of luck
with that to all of you, I welcome the challenge!
Enjoy your last few months of winter, it’ll be green before you know it.
