Ryan speaks on the artistic aesthetics,
ancient cities, and global influences that

I want to see and feel the world firsthand, to be
inspired, uplifted and creatively fulfilled,” says
Kathleen Ryan. It is a philosophy that aptly captures
the designer’s approach to work and life. From the
posh halls of the Union Club, to exquisitely appointed
residences in Gstaad, Paris, or NYC, Ryan has done it
all. A graduate of the prestigious New York School of
Interior Design, with degrees in Journalism and Art
History, the multi-talented design maven has worked
with a number of acclaimed design companies in New
York before joining Ychelle, a boutique firm focusing
on high-end, unique residential interior design and
architecture. As Ychelle’s chief design guru, Ryan
takes her classical, globally-informed style to work
magic on exclusive residences, both locally and around
the world, using her international savoir-faire to forge
relationships with talented artisans and ateliers across
Europe and North America and create one-of-a-kind
pieces for bespoke living. With her appreciation for
old-world beauty, cultural experiences, and a touch
of exotic mystique, Ryan’s multifaceted style is as

The wheels of the car bump along the rustic road as I
meander my way to Poggio ai Segugi — the country
manor of Stefano Ricci, founder of his eponymous bespoke
menswear brand. After an hour’s drive, the gates to the estate
open; pheasants greet me, as comfortable here as in the wild.
In an understated elegance like his clothing, Ricci’s
impressive home sits atop a hill amidst the rolling Tuscan hills
of Mugello, land originally owned by the Medicis, the leading
Florentine family since the 15th century. Spread across 1650
acres of wilderness, game, and life — Poggio ai Segugi is an
outdoorsman’s paradise, and sanctuary. The hunter’s lodge lies
adjacent to the main house, and the Riccis dutifully maintain
the ecosystem’s balance by preserving and sometimes hunting
wild animals roaming the property. Any game hunted on the
premises is donated to the less fortunate in neighboring towns.
Of all Ricci’s properties around the world, it’s no surprise
this is his favourite. The home’s harmony with the land
reveals his true nature — a man who reveres tradition and
the natural order. He even spends every May and June in
Africa on safari, hunting for inspiration for a new collection.
The classic Tuscan architecture reflects the essence of
the Renaissance era, with its rustic limestone walls, arched

Inside, the Stefano Ricci home collection adorns the
interior, with its immaculate objects such as hand-crafted
crystal water glasses and hand-hammered silver wine goblets
— just like those of the Renaissance — harmonized with the
masculinity of taxidermied hunting trophies on the walls.
The presence of Stefano Ricci, the bearded patriarchal
founder, fills up the room, radiating the aura of his brand’s
marketing slogan, “Honour, Power, Pride” — though he
somehow does it with an approachable warmth and humility.
“I am a normal person in a normal family, which has old
tradition,” Ricci says, an ethos which has been passed on to
his two sons, who now help him run the company — the
elder Niccolò, CEO, and younger Filippo, creative director.
“That is a treasure, it’s an asset for my kids to have grown up
with the same spirit.”

“My job is men’s fashion, and it’s more men’s tradition, because
there are two worlds,” says Ricci. “The one where the designers
like to dress a man like a woman, [and the] real tradition of men’s
clothing, which is tailoring and a completely different world.”
The brand’s eagle logo symbolizes that masculine strength,
while also suggesting a visionary, an ability to see far away —
or down the road — a quality the founder clearly possesses
after leading the market for 45 years in bespoke men’s fashion.
“This is not just a cloth, but also a heritage — the continuation
of the spirit of Florence, a continuation of culture,” he says.
Reviving the Renaissance
Ricci has always emphasized the impact of growing up in
Florence, the birthplace of Dante, da Vinci and Michelangelo,

Ferragamo — a city of timeless tastemakers, inspiring Ricci in
the creation of his own brand.
“I don’t want to be luxury, I want to be different,” he says.
His legacy is a return to “quality, quality, quality” — classic,
bespoke, hand-crafted clothing, rightfully earning $500 a tie
and $30,000 a suit. “If you really love what you are doing,
you want to put your own touch on what you learned from
the Florentine culture.”
A tailoring and necktie aficionado — with a collection of
150 Hermès ties growing up — Ricci decided he’d write his
own chapter in the history books. In 1972, he designed his
first collection with the hope
of making the best ties in the
world, inspired by the handmade
craftsmanship and classical
paintings of the Renaissance.
Two years later, in his early 20s,
Ricci and his maiden collection
were lauded at Pitti Uomo,
the preeminent international
menswear event. Soon, leading
international department stores
were lining their shelves with Stefano Ricci ties.
“Today, to make a brand, you can do it in two ways —
one is with a huge advertising campaign, the other is good
quality. I never compromised the product for the price — it’s
exclusive because there are a few made of that item,” he says.
“The ladies’ cloth, the quality of the cloth, never gets even
close to the material that we use — not even haute couture.”
Ricci’s current collection, the “Patchwork” series, also
known as the world’s most expensive ties, beautifully showcase
the handcrafted quality one expects from the Stefano Ricci
label. Hundreds of small silk pieces are hand sewn together
using fabric painstakingly spun on centuries-old looms, which
can only produce two ties’ worth of silk in one hour. But the
high cost never deterred Ricci, who deeply believed traditional
Florentine style and workmanship were the only way forward.
“If there is no passion, you don’t go anywhere,” Ricci says. “I was
pushed to expand by the request of the market, by the consumer.”
Only two years after his first tie collection, Stefano Ricci
added top-quality shirts and small leather goods, and then

continued to build out the men’s wardrobe, from suits to shoes to
jewellery. True to the company’s Florentine roots, Ricci set a timeless
standard of quality around the globe, all while going in the opposite
direction of the industry.
In the 1980s, as Italy shifted from an agricultural country to an
industrial and service-based economy, Italian fashions moved away from
haute couture to ready-to-wear clothing. The new more affordable styles
found in Milan deposed Florence as the reigning fashion capital of Italy.
Ricci and other powerful Florentine fashion families formed a
philanthropic consortium called “Classico Italia” to bolster the presence
of Florence and to protect its artisanal heritage. Its “100% Made in
Italy” label signified production carried out exclusively in Italy, versus
the cheaper alternatives in Asia quickly gaining in popularity.
Nothing can exemplify that “100% Made in Italy” bespoke experience
of Stefano Ricci quite like the creation of its custom suits, where they
even photograph a client’s stride to ensure the most natural, precise fit.
From exquisite fabrics of cashmere, wool, and silk, to 186 production
steps all graced by the hands of master artisans — the quality,
comfort and look of a Stefano Ricci bespoke suit can’t be
matched by a machine.
“What can be done in one minute with machine, with
technology, is done in four to five hours by hand,” Ricci says.
As demand continued to grow for Stefano Ricci clothing and
accessories, in 1993, Ricci opened his first monobrand boutique
in Shanghai — a bold choice at the time.
“Twenty-three years ago, nobody really expected what China
would be,” says Ricci. On a previous visit to China, Ricci saw
something that other entrepreneurs might have missed. “I was
looking at the way the young generation was moving, walking,
the energy of the eyes.”
The Chinese embraced the Stefano Ricci brand, even
though ties cost an equivalent of four months salary for a
well-off Chinese. Ricci’s sons, Niccolò and Filippo, saw huge
potential in the brand’s artisanal heritage, and bit by bit, with
their marketing savvy, Stefano Ricci opened a
total of 52 boutiques internationally, from Dubai
to Beverly Hills to recently, the flagship store in
Vancouver, Canada’s first. Ricci personally designed
every boutique himself, each 100 percent made by
Florentine craftsmen.
Staying true to the soul of the brand, Niccolò and
Filippo came across a business opportunity that was
less about economics and more of a responsibility to
their heritage. The speed and cheap cost of modern
industrial production were putting artisanal textile
mills out of business, including the legendary silk
mill Antico Setificio Fiorentino, which had been
producing fabrics for royalty since 1786.
In 2010, from the Pucci family, Stefano Ricci
S.p.A. bought Antico Setificio Fiorentino, a magical
place that truly takes you back in time. The ancient mill is
tucked away along an alley, not at all where you’d expect to find
the production of Europe’s finest, most expensive handmade
silks, costing 2,000 euros per metre. When you open the iron
gate and walk towards the burnt-red front door, you can faintly
hear a rhythmic thumping and clicking from the 17th and 18th
century semi-automatic looms, singing like an orchestrated
symphony. Inside the historic mill, master weavers line the walls
working on ancient wooden looms, as one lady in the corner
patiently uses a warper designed by Leonardo da Vinci himself,
with his sketches still hanging on the wall.
“I really feel very lucky to make some contribution to the
preservation of these traditional crafts,” Ricci says, happy yet
still humbled by his role in history, a legacy and heritage he
wants to preserve and pass on. “Now is the moment to think
about the future. Stefano Ricci and the approach to quality is
something for the new generation, the young generation.”

For many people, a garden is a place to escape reality, find
peace, return to the roots. But Canadian artist TM Glass
believes that life of the garden — that beauty — should be
intertwined with our lives, shaping us and our environment.
“I think that the world is experiencing a time when they
need something beautiful,” Glass says. “We are having so
many problems with the environment and with politics, I
think that they need to think about nature — the beauty of
nature, and the nature of beauty.”
Glass is pioneering a new medium of art that blends
photography with digital painting, using classical artistic
perspectives that are moving away from the direction of
contemporary art. “Over the last century, architects and
artists believed that beauty should not be relevant in works of
art,” the artist explains. But Glass, and many other artists today,
believe it’s time to revive the traditional aesthetic of beauty —
and Glass has chosen the perfect subject matter for art.
“Flowers are the most beautiful things on this planet,” Glass
says. “For thousands of years, flowers have been a symbol of
love and peace — people have recognized the beauty of flowers.
As an artist, it’s what I can contribute to the world now.”
The artist’s love affair with flowers began at an early age,
when visiting Grandmother’s house, a wonderful change
from the suburb, with only “skinny trees on the front lawn.”
But Glass’ grandmother’s garden, filled with roses, peonies,
lilies, bleeding hearts, tulips, daffodils and fruit trees, “was like
a little paradise,” the artist recalls. “She inspired me to think
that one day I might have a garden like hers.”

六 十 年 到 一 百 年
間 , 藝 術 家 們 已
經 不 再 去 思 考 藝 術 品 視 覺 上 的 深 度 了 。 所 謂
現 代 藝 術 的 繪 畫 作 品 變 得 異 常 直 白 乏 味 , 也
很 少 有 人 在 油 畫 布 上 創 作 了 。」TM Glass 遺
憾 地 說 。 尤 其 當 想 要 表 現 鮮 花 這 種 色 彩 紋 理
精 緻 細 膩 、 內 涵 情 感 豐 富 靈 動 的 「 主 角 」 時 ,

「 照 相 機 只 是 一 個 機 器 , 一 個 可 以 捕

As an art student, almost like a mother capturing
the life of her newborn, Glass “started
documenting the creation of my own garden
with a little tiny point-and-shoot camera,”
the artist says with a laugh, thinking back on
that old rudimentary six-megapixel camera — a
long way from the new 100-megapixel Glass
has now. But this casual hobby turned into
passion, into art, aligned with the perspective
of William Morris,
a leading designer
from the international
Arts and
Crafts movement
in England in the
late 19th and early
20th centuries, inspiring
decorative
arts to return to
traditional craftsmanship
and classical
beauty.
“Machines were
taking over and making things that were not so
beautiful, but cheap,” Glass says. “William Morris
created this movement to recapture the old ways
and make sure they didn’t die out, for weavers
and dyers of wool using the old natural dyes,
people using ceramic tiles, using the old places
and tapestry and wallpaper, block prints — he
rescued those. We need people concerning
themselves with perfection and the care that
the old artisans used to pride themselves on.”
Some of Morris’ philosophies especially
resonated with Glass while pioneering a new
medium of digital painting and photography.
“When you cut flowers, they are so beautiful,
but you sense that they won’t last very long,
so their beauty is heightened by the fact that
they are cut in water instead of growing in the
ground,” says the artist. “There is something
very, very touching about that.”

But Glass’ protagonists would need proper homes, as coffee
cups would no longer suffice.
“For many centuries, artists have been creating vessels for
cut flowers — vases and even teapots — because people like
to celebrate the beauty of flowers in their homes, and even
where they work,” Glass says. “So now I’m on a quest for vases
in the world that are the most beautiful that I can find.”
After photographing priceless vases from Toronto’s Royal
Ontario Museum and Gardiner Museum, the Canadian
artist will be heading to England to photograph vases from
the collection of the Royal Family. While Glass spearheads
this medium, digitally blending the perfect beauty of flowers
with the world’s most rare vases, the approach is still rooted
in ancient thought and technique.
A classic touch
“In the last 60 to 100 years of art history, modern artists moved
away from thinking about depth of the illusion and the illusion
of depth,” Glass says. “The pendulum went as far as it possibly
could go in contemporary art painting, where the image became
as flat as it could possibly be — it was merely paint on canvas.”
For Glass, that two-dimensional, lifeless perspective — and
the medium of photography alone — weren’t going to do the beloved
petalled friends justice. “My artistic intention is to capture
the memories and the dreams about the flowers and the vases,”
Glass says. “Cameras are just a machine, just a piece of equipment
that is limited in the way it can see and capture the image.
But the human mind captures the memory of an image quite
differently. For my pictures, I work with light almost in the way
that a sculptor does, finding a shape through light and shadow.”
In art school, Glass was fortunate to have studied with older
teachers well-versed in classical art, history and technique,
who understood the fundamentals of light, shade and composition,
arguably the most essential element of beauty, which
has been lost over the last several decades.
“When people look at beautiful things, they know it immediately,
it’s an instinct to recognize something that’s beautiful,”
says Glass. “For most people, if they are in contact with something
in nature, that makes them feel physically, mentally, and

emotionally serene and happy. You might look at a flower, a leaf,
a bird or a tree, and feel a resonance. The reason for that is that
nature creates all natural things with a mathematical proportion—the
golden ratio. It was
revived in the Renaissance, and
artists and architects throughout
the ages — ancient Egyptians
and ancient Greeks, for
example — have always used
this proportion of nature.”
Glass also uses a black background
for all paintings, a technique
used by 16th, 17th and
18th-century Dutch masters.
“They painted flowers and stilllife
pictures and discovered that if they had a black background,
then the flower’s colours would be very jewel-like,” Glass
explains. “It’s a very enchanting way of presenting a colour.”

art theory, one traditional concept particularly stands out — and
sheds light on why these works of art are so special. For centuries,
it’s the singular spirit of the artist or artisan, the unique perspective
and soul, that finds its way
into the work of art. Glass is no
exception, pouring heart and
soul into a single painting for
two to three months at a time.
“Even though the camera
captures the most exquisite
detail, it’s still never going to
be the same as my memory of
these flowers,” Glass says. “So,
when I’m working on putting
the picture together, I’m able
to use the digital technology that’s available to me to bring
that picture into my memory and love for this memory, and so
it becomes very personal. It’s my memory of the flowers that’s
mixed in with the camera’s memory of the flowers.”

When I met Vasilios Zoupounidis, I was eager to
learn how he achieved such highly-acclaimed
success, even drawing the attention of the King of
Sweden, who honoured him as the Business Pioneer
of the Year in 2011. What I found was that the
entrepreneur had an entirely different starting point,
and because of that, ended up with something quite
special, and rare.
“I would say that most problems in society stem
from bad morals in people, and as a result of that,
in companies,” says Zoupounidis. “I think the main
problem is greed. Without greed, I think this would be
a better world. I truly believe that morality can make a
business transcend ordinary boundaries.”
Solid roots
Zoupounidis and his family immigrated to Sweden when
he was 2 years old, leaving Greece behind but keeping its

和 文 學 作 品 。「 我 是 屬 猴 的 , 當 然 最 喜 歡 孫 悟 空 , 那 些 依 據
《 西 遊 記 》 改 編 的 舞 劇 都 有 很 深 的 內 涵 和 能 量 。 如 果 時 光 能
倒 退 個 二 三 十 年 , 我 一 定 去 參 加 神 韻 藝 術 團 。 我 練 過 中 國 功
夫 , 一 定 能 學 好 中 國 古 典 舞 。」
說 起 自 己 的 中 國 功 夫 ,Vasilios 的 神 情 興 奮 起 來 。「 我
五 歲 時 , 哥 哥 帶 回 家 一 本 中 國 功 夫 雜 誌 , 我 非 常 喜 歡 , 但 吸
引 我 的 不 是 那 些 打 鬥 的 東 西 , 而 是 其 中 的 哲 理 。」 懷 揣 著 自
己 的 功 夫 夢 ,Vasilios 開 始 走 出 家 門 去 尋 訪 功 夫 大 師 , 他 旅 途
的 第 一 站 居 然 是 當 地 的 中 餐 館 。「 那 時 我 以 為 每 個 中 國 人 都
是 功 夫 大 師 , 就 去 中 餐 館 找 師 父 , 結 果 還 真 找 到 了 。」 有 一
天 ,Vasilios 在 中 餐 館 認 識 了 一 位 會 武 術 的 中 國 人 , 他 教 了
Vasilios 一 些 基 礎 的 招 式 。 之 後 ,Vasilios 又 去 學 習 了 空 手 道 ,
classical culture and values close to his heart. His father had
been an orphan and instilled in his son the value of hard work
and sacrificing for others, qualities that the future business
leader would carry with him through his professional life.
“I have never made ‘having fun’ for myself a priority,” says
Zoupounidis, who started his first business at 18 years old.
“My focus has been more that my employees should have
fun, not I. I actually believe more in suffering through it
all.” He laughs, and jokes that he must sound quite dull,
meanwhile revealing a much deeper life perspective. “I feel
the happiest when I have overcome a problem through hard
work and big effort.”
Growing up, Zoupounidis was fascinated by history’s
deepest thinkers, including Socrates, whom he considers to be
the greatest philosopher in the Western world. “Greece is the
cradle of Western civilization — its myths and legends carry
deep meaning and can teach us modern people a lot,” he says.
“The same goes for the ancient Chinese civilization — its
ancient stories can teach us about morality and how to become
a better person.” He remembers his brothers sharing Kung Fu
magazines with him as a child, introducing him to Eastern
culture, which seemed surprisingly familiar to his own heritage.
“What appealed to me most was not the fighting, but
the philosophy,” he says. “Both Buddhism and Christianity
teach compassion, so they have a common fundamental
principle.” He points out that the swastika symbol seen
on Buddha statues for 2,500 years can also be found at the
Acropolis in Greece.
Hungry for more Eastern culture as a teenager,
Zoupounidis started learning karate, which he studied for
years before exploring internal qigong practices. But he’d
soon find a practice that would change his life, both inside
and out, personally and professionally.
In the spring of 1998, Zoupounidis found online what
he had always been looking for — Falun Dafa, a Chinese
internal self-cultivation practice. He was so touched by the
teachings, he avidly read all the books in one weekend. Soon
after practicing, his allergies and back pain disappeared, and
the practice began to help him with his high-stress job as a
salesperson.

“It is that obvious and effective!”

“Things change when I let
go of an attachment,” he
says. “Problems don’t get
solved because I change
something on the surface,
but because I let something
go in my heart.”
Since he had been a successful salesperson for so long, an
attachment to money was an obvious shortcoming that he
worked hard to let go.
“Most people want a lot of money; they think it is the key
to happiness. However, I found out that it’s not so at all,” he
says. “The key to happiness is letting go of all attachments,
money being one of them.” He emphasized that it’s not
about physically giving away wealth, but letting go of the
neediness and greediness for it.

A different approach
In 1999, a year after Zoupounidis began practicing Falun
Dafa, the communist regime in China launched a brutal
persecution, surprising him and his wife, who had started
practicing with him.
“My wife and I wondered how a government could ban
something that’s so good for people and for society,” he
says. But after Zoupounidis began studying the history of

the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), he realized it’s a
common pattern to target a different group of people every
10 to 15 years. “This is just the way the CCP works. It has
been persecuting its own people since it came to power.”
Zoupounidis and his wife began volunteering for different
human rights projects, sending mass emails into China
explaining the truth about Falun Dafa, combatting massive
propaganda broadcast by the CCP. But he discovered
that emails could be blocked through China’s severe
internet censorship, so
the businessman came
up with a new strategy.
“I thought that if I had
my own company, I would
have a lot of phone lines,
so I would be able to fax
news to China,” he says,
explaining that a fax is a
physical piece of paper
that can’t be blocked like
email. “So the idea was to work during the daytime, using
the phone lines to sell products and services to Swedish
companies, and then fax to China during nighttime and
weekends to tell the Chinese people about the persecution
of Falun Dafa.”
At the end of 2003, Zoupounidis launched his own sales
company with the purpose of creating an infrastructure and
earning revenue to be used for his human rights work.
“Everyone who runs a business knows that it’s not an easy
thing, working from early in the morning to late at night,
especially the first years, when the revenue is very small.
Difficulties are always present,” he says. “The main challenge
is actually to have the stamina to get through it all.”
Zoupounidis says the Falun Dafa exercises and soulsearching
principles helped fortify his will and improved
his leadership as the head of the company.
“With some sales people, their attitude is just to close
deals,” he says. “But if guided according to truthfulness,
compassion and tolerance, asking them to think about the
clients first, then they’re happy, work more efficiently, and
close deals even faster.”
While self-cultivation helped him day-to-day, it also gave
him overall clarity and direction, something that could be
lost at times when faced with the challenges of creating a
successful start-up.
“I think that if you ask any person running a business for
advice in starting one, he or she would tell you similar things,
like believing in yourself when no one else does, sticking
through it, working hard, having a mentor, building a team and

Six months later, Zoupounidis launched his human rights
initiative, sending faxes into China, soon discovering that
his human rights project would be as difficult and timeconsuming
as running his sales business during the day.
Organizing the information to fax into China, managing
several teams at night, and developing software to streamline
the process tested the
budding entrepreneur
on many levels. But
Zoupounidis never quit
— each struggle, each
challenge became an
opportunity for personal
growth.
During the summer
of 2004, Zoupounidis’
sales company closed
down for the entire month of July, but instead of taking
a vacation, he and his team faxed into China around the
clock. A few months later, the phone line operator called
Zoupounidis to investigate if criminals had hijacked the
company’s modems, a common practice at the time, where
people made money off of illegal long distance calls. When
Zoupounidis asked why, the phone operator told him
152,000 calls had been made in the month of July alone,
which meant a staggering 152,000 faxes had been sent into
China that exposed the persecution of Falun Dafa.
“Many people were involved. It was a team effort, with
everyone cooperating,” he says. “That’s why it was so
successful.”
One might think devoting so much spare time to a
human rights project and away from his core sales business
would hurt his company’s bottom line. The founder found
the opposite, in fact.
Zoupounidis’ company grew to six cities in Sweden, with
50 employees, and an annual revenue of ten million. He was
honoured with several awards as well.
“The idea to start the company actually originated from
the wish to tell the truth to the Chinese people,” he says.
“There is a saying, ‘What goes around comes around.’ In
Swedish we say, ‘As you sow you get to harvest.’ In Chinese,
I believe it is ‘Shan you shan bao, e you e bao,’ meaning
‘if you do good you get good, if you do bad you get bad.’
So I actually believe that the fundamental cause for my
company’s success is this principle. I did something good
for others, so I also received some good back.”

“
At first what caught my eye about this home was its scale,”
says landscape designer Ryan Donohoe. “It was clear from
the beginning that everything about this home was going to be
grand, and it was important that the finished landscape matched
the home’s grandeur and was seamless with the architecture.”
The new owners of the early-1980s residence put their modest
renovation plans on hold for personal reasons. But one year
later, expanded plans ignited what would become a beautifully
transformed family oasis that lies — shielded from the world by
a 40-foot-high cedar hedge — on one of West Vancouver’s rare
large flat lots.

“Initially, the project started as a much smaller reno,
essentially changing the floor tile throughout the
home and putting in a new kitchen,” says architect
Karen Kallweit of Kallweit Graham Architecture.
But then the scope expanded tremendously and very
quickly. “Before we knew it,” she says, “we were adding
significant spaces, taking off roofs, tearing down the
tennis court to accommodate major landscaping, and
scrambling for permits.”
The project, which started in 2010, was delayed by
extended landscaping and working around existing
hydro right-of-way limitations, which created sideyard
setback and access issues. This also prevented
electrical power to the property for the first few
months, necessitating the use of generators. The
project was completed in 2015.
The pace became hectic to the point that many of the
design details were sketched on paper by hand, with
the exception of the curved arched ceiling in the living
room, which required exacting computer-construction
drawings with detailed curves down to a sixteenth of
an inch.
The renovations — skillfully executed by Kingdom
Builders, Vancouver — increased the overall living
area from 7,100 square feet to 8,700 square feet,
incorporating a fitness room that could be utilized as

a caretaker suite, a small poolhouse, five bedrooms, all
with ensuite, and a health spa.
View lines extend from all vantage points within the
two-storey house to the gardens, creating private little
realms amongst the larger family living areas. Kallweit
took what she felt worked from the old structure in
terms of the existing stucco finish, dark brown window
frames and wrought iron accents, then leaned towards
a West Coast/Asian craftsman fusion with a respectful
nod to the home’s original Spanish influences.
The home was designed to accommodate not only
extended family members who congregate from around
the world, but the owner’s passion for gardening.
Ryan Donohoe, of Donohoe Design Inc., completed
the garden design, creating an ethereal feeling for
the clients by incorporating multi-sensory elements

laced with fruit trees and a custom-built
stainless-steel planting station.
Donohoe flew to England to collaborate
with David Harber, one of the world’s
top garden-sculpture artists, to create the
landscape centrepiece, a corten steel windchime
sculpture.
“Towering over the garden like soldiers
protecting the family,” he says, “eight
laser-cut corten steel blades and eight
beautifully spun stainless steel rods, set
to the pentatonic scale, move together in
the wind in a harmonized fashion.” At
the top of each blade of steel on the wind
chimes sits an engraved brass plaque with
a Mandarin symbol for each of the words:
respect, reflection, humility, peace, effort,
manner, honesty, and kindness.
If it’s true that a garden becomes an
extension of one’s home and mirrors the
personalities and emotions of the residents,
Karen Kallweit and Ryan Donohoe have
captured the core essence of this family
flawlessly.

Grand Feu enamel dial and the Marine Annual Calendar
Chronometer, following last year’s combination of two complicated
functions, a marine chronometer and an annual calendar. On the
dial, delicate enamel waves spread from the centrepiece. The powerreserve
indicator is at 12 o’clock, and the annual calendar and date
displays at 6 o’clock with distinctive hands and roman numerals
indicating minutes and hours. A fluted bezel and a screw-down
crown ensure water-resistance to 100m, as classical characteristics

SPEC” watch, with water-tightness indicator, a series
created by Jean-Jacques Fiechter, CEO of Blancpain. A
passionate and experienced diver, he created a doublesealed
crown system and a secured rotating bezel to
measure the duration of a dive. In the new 2017 model,
the “Tribute to Fifty Fathoms MIL-SPEC” is fitted with
Blancpain’s in-house automatic winding calibre 1151
with two series-coupled mainspring barrels, and features
a four-day power reserve. Water resistant to 300 metres.
The watch is limited to 500 examples and is offered with
a NATO strap, sailcloth strap, or steel bracelet with a

In 1815, A.L. Breguet was awarded “Chronometer-Maker to the French Royal Navy.” The
watchmaker and his son made their name creating the most sophisticated timepieces of the
time. Now another innovative invention joins the Marine series. The blue dial’s background
motif evokes the ocean’s waves, while the running solar hand, adorned with a faceted golden
sun, provides a direct reading of solar time with a figure-8 shape. The aperture displaying the
days of the week is between 10 and 11 o’clock; the aperture between 1 and 2 o’clock displays
the month and the leap-year cycle. The date appears inside the chapter ring by means of a
retrograde hand tipped with an anchor motif and sweeping across an arc running from 9 to
3 o’clock. The 80-hour autonomy is displayed through an aperture between 7 and 9 o’clock.

“The most invigorating aspect of this business for me is being
involved in the dining experience,” says Miceli, co-owner of one
of Vancouver’s most sought-after restaurants, La Terrazza, a
perfect blend of authentic Italian cuisine and British Columbia’s
freshest ingredients.
“Whether it’s recommending a very unique wine from Southern
Italy, where I’m from, or creating a specific dish on the evening
of an anniversary — seeing the patron so happy that they send
you a card in the mail a week later saying, ‘Thank you so much for
making our evening so special’ — that is for sure the catalyst for me.”
But Miceli’s transformation from professional soccer player
in Italy to world renowned restaurateur in Vancouver isn’t as
random as it seems.
“Both careers are similar in the sense you have to actually have
passion for it,” he says. “You can’t be lackadaisical with either
career — you have to be very focused, you need to persevere, and when
you have that passion, it carries you right through in every aspect.”

Miceli’s parents emigrated to Vancouver from Calabria in
Southern Italy. He cultivated his “front of the house” chops
— the management, the “experience” side of the restaurant
business — at Quattro on Fourth in Kitsilano. There he was
mentored by Antonio Corsi, a native of Rome, not far from
Miceli’s own origins. They hit it off, and Corsi inspired the
young Miceli with his culinary creativity and wine expertise.
“Wine is life, it’s part of Italian culture, and it goes in unison
with food,” says Miceli, whose restaurant, La Terrazza, is a
regular on Wine Spectator’s top 100 best wine lists in the world,
featuring 2,500 bins and 40,000 bottles. “Italians, we enjoy our
wine with the food — they become a marriage.”
Quattro was far more than a training ground for the future
restaurateur. Meceli met his two business partners there as
well — Iqbal Grewal, co-owner of Quattro, and Gennaro
Iorio, the executive chef, whose mother is from Florence and
father from Naples. The chef ’s father was a butcher and baker
by trade, expertise the young chef would translate to culinary
perfection at La Terrazza years later.
“We got all the recipes for our bread from [Iorio’s father],”
says Miceli. “Our bread is all made in house. It’s exquisite, it’s
fantastic, and we do a variety — focaccia bread, traditional
sourdough, grissini homemade breadsticks. We prepare our
own crostini. Chef Gennaro is also well-known in the city for
preparing some of the best beef tenderloin, rack of lamb, and
braised meats in the city.”

After four and a half years at Quattro, a new location
opened up on the edge of Yaletown, and Miceli — and his
colleagues — thought it was time for a change.
“When I saw the location for the very first time, I fell in
love with it. It was a brand-new location — it was an empty
shell,” says Miceli, who recalls how barren and undeveloped
the area was at the time. But six months later, in 1998,
24-year-old Iorio, 27-year-old Miceli, and 31-year-old
Grewal went for their dream and created La Terrazza. “We
had a lot of energy and conviction to do it, because it was
a very risky commitment since this whole area was new.”
Though it took some guts for the young trio to prove
themselves on their own, one thing they knew inside and
out was fine Italian gastronomy.
“The core of Italian cuisine is actually quite simplistic
because it’s all about fresh, exuberant natural ingredients,”
says Miceli. “The culture in Italy thrives off of natural
organic produce, and they have a very agricultural
background when approaching all aspects of their food
— whether it’s their meats where they are drying cold
cuts, savoury meat dishes, or they’re planting the freshest
produce as possible.” He also notes that Italians love to
eat produce in season, unlike the typical North American
palate used to eating a vegetable or fruit year-round.
Though in the mid 90s it was difficult to access authentic
Italian products, the Italian Chamber of Commerce took
the lead, opening up trade. Now, Miceli is able to source
the most authentic ingredients straight from Italy, such as
burrata, buffalo mozzarella, rare white truffles from Alba in
Piedmont, Northern Italy, and a wide range of extra virgin
olive oils like the spicier southern ones to more mild northern
oils famous for their beautiful viscosity and freshness.
“Executing and creating great Italian food is about not overcomplicating
the dish, because the ingredients have to come
forth, they have to show off,” Miceli says. “For example, Italy’s
extra virgin olive oil is exquisite. You want to have integrity
in the dish, you don’t want to mask it with too many sauces
and too many ingredients where you lose that quality.”
Part of Miceli’s quest for an unforgettable dining experience
includes adding local ingredients, such as sourcing oysters
and fresh seafoods for daily specials, going to local farms for
Alberta’s triple Angus reserve beef, or a succulent duck breast.
Sourcing from British Columbia is “part of our identity. Not
the majority of our identity, but it complements our identity,”
he says. “It’s also about having respect for where you were
brought up and the new life that we have in Vancouver. That’s
why my parents immigrated here — for more opportunity
for prosperity. I think it’s wonderful to incorporate both
entities — the tradition my parents brought with them and
the new environment of British Columbia.”

Lake Como quietly emanates a sublime elegance that
goes back millennia. Steep mountains cascade into deep
blue waters, affording only a thin line of estates and small
hamlets to dot a perimeter that is otherwise exquisitely
natural. I’m not sure anything can prepare you for that first
moment when you behold Lake Como. And it’s not a feeling
that dissipates. After a few days in Bellagio, every glance out
the window of my hotel or picturesque boat trip upon the
water inspired not only that awe but also a sense of how lucky
I was to be there, in this most special part of Northern Italy.
Como’s history
The deepest lake in Europe, Lake Como’s Y-shape was
carved by a glacier 10,000 years ago. Although evidence of
settlements from the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age
proves this area has been inhabited for millennia, it became
fashionable when Julius Caesar set up a city near what is
now Como to connect his territories with Switzerland
outposts. Aristocrats and influential Romans such as Pliny
the Elder and Pliny the Younger were residents there, as
Como flourished as an important trading centre.
At the turn of the 18th century, Lake Como became
a highlight on the Grand Tour, a circuit of travel that
wealthy Europeans embarked upon to experience the best
of the European continent. Consequently, tourism began to
supplant silk as the region’s top industry.
In 1859, Lake Como became part of the newly formed
Kingdom of Italy after centuries of foreign rule and fighting
between the Duchy of Milan, the Spanish, the Austrians,
the French, and the Lombardy.
Throughout the ages, Lake Como has hosted such famous
visitors as Romantic poets Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe
Shelley, composer Giuseppe Verdi, who composed some of
La Traviata while at Villa Margherita Ricordi, and modernday
movie stars such as George Clooney, who owns a villa
here in Laglio.

How to get around
Driving around Lake Como takes expertise, grit,
and nerves of steel, due to windy vertiginous roads
that are narrow and vary greatly in elevation.
Therefore, once you get to Lake Como, take
advantage of the lake itself to get around. There
are fast ferries that connect the main villages such
as Bellagio and Como, but also slower ferries that
take you all the way around the lake with some
helpful narration of what you’re looking at.
The best way to get around, however, is to
hire your own boat for the day with someone
knowledgeable. This way, you can take the time
to stop for a mid-morning espresso on the
veranda of the grand dame of the lake hotels,
the Villa d’Este, in Cernobbio, and later enjoy
a glass of wine or a light lunch in picturesque
Varenna. Lake Como is a close community, so
your guide will know the important villas, who
owns them, and all the good gossip.

The villages
In Como, ride the funicular up the mountain to
Brunate, but don’t stop with the camera-wielding
masses, rather carry on up the trail all the way to
the lighthouse at Faro Voltiano where you can
get the best view of Como and the lake, and
even see all the way to Switzerland.
The village of Como has become something
of a mini-Milan, as chic boutiques, trendy
farm-to-table restaurants, and swanky hotels
pack the streets with sophisticated tourists. I
found myself, like most tourists, buying a lovely,
locally-made silk scarf here to look like the
locals when the breva, or breeze off the lake,
cools everything down.
The town of Bellagio sits on the peninsula
that splits the lake, the centre of the “Y,” and
is one of the most enchanting spots in all of
Italy. Expect cobblestone streets, charming
squares, little shops, restaurants, and tempting
gelaterias. The Villa Serbelloni, a 15th-century
villa-turned-luxury-hotel, is stunning both
inside and out. My stay here included much
exploring of the hotel’s lavish dining and
ballrooms, taking in the magnificent lakeview
poolside, and indulging in Aperol spritzes to

of Lake Como’s villas remain privately owned, the stately
Villa Carlotta in the town of Tremezzo has been turned
into a museum. Inside the villa, don’t miss the masterpieces
of sculptor Canova, and then head outside for Carlotta’s
magnificent Italian gardens, teeming with 20 acres of
flowering rhododendrons and azaleas in the spring.
Cernobbio is amazing in that it’s one of the most
elegant places in Europe, and boasts some of the top
hotels and restaurants in the world, and yet everyone is
made to feel like a local. It’s as if you gain acceptance to
the private club of Cernobbio merely by having the good
taste to have sought it out. The Villa d’Este might be the
only scenery prettier than the lake itself, so be careful
when sitting on its veranda not to get whiplash trying to
decide on the better the view. Every year, they host the
Concorso d’Eleganza, a car show featuring 50 vintage
luxury cars made between 1920 and 1980, which draws

another icon, Harry’s Bar, an offshoot of the original
Venice location, which is known for its traditional Italian
dishes, high profile patrons, and impeccable cocktails,
which it somehow manages to pull off without even a
hint of pretension.
Get to know the locals
It was here at Harry’s Bar that the Italian way of life
began to sink in as I talked to Riccardo Marazzi, an owner
of the establishment and lifelong Cernobbio resident
who implored me to appreciate “the deep history of
this place and the calm and idyllic peace that you
can find here.” We enjoyed a glass of red wine as he
helped me plan my itinerary here for the next few days.
He broke it down simply as to what every visitor needs
to take away from Lake Como: “the sense of Italian style
mixed with elegance and simplicity of Northern Italy.”

You can almost hear sultry bossa nova music as
your plane descends over lush Rio de Janeiro. This
vibrant coastal town on the Atlantic coast of Brazil
is stunning from every angle. The locals, or Cariocas as
they’re called, are warm and welcoming, with their music,
food, and culture, as Rio runs on the high-energy beat of
samba music. It’s a wonderful city to explore rainforests,
savour some sun on the famous beaches, shop the latest
fashion trends, and sip a refreshing caipirinha cocktail.
The mountains
With the peaks of Sugarloaf and Corcovado, getting
vertical in this town is essential. Choose a clear day, as
the views from atop both peaks are unparalleled. The
38-metre statue of Christ the Redeemer, one of the new
Seven Wonders of the World, sits atop the 710-metre
Corcovado mountain. The statue, with outstretched
hands, watches over the city and symbolizes both the
religion of Brazil and its welcoming nature. This peak is
accessible by van, a very difficult hike, or electric train.
The best view of Christ the Redeemer, however, is to take
a bondi (funicular) up nearby Sugarloaf Mountain.
The best time to visit the peak is at sunset, when you
can watch the verdant mountaintops over Guanabara
Bay disappear as the city lights start to glow in the
city beneath.

The beaches
Ever since the bossa nova jazz song “Girl from
Ipanema” made it big in the 1960s, Ipanema
Beach has been the see-and-be-seen beach
for the Cariocas. People-watching is the top
activity, but you’ll also see futevolei, a local
take on volleyball without using hands, postos
(lifeguard stations) perfect for meeting friends
or stopping by a beachside cafe for a cold beer.
As you walk down the beach, if you notice
the beachside sidewalk switch from circles
to undulating waves, you’ve crossed over to
Copacabana Beach, which is often referred to
as the most famous beach in the world, full of
impromptu music performances, vendors, and
packed with sun worshippers. These are not
beaches to enjoy your solitude and the beauty of
nature (for that you’d go to Joatinga); these are
fun beaches to experience local life.
The rainforest
A mere 10-minute drive from the centre of
the city, you can trek deep into the rainforest.
Tijuca National Park includes 8,300 acres of
urban rainforest, with 1,600 plant species and
350 species of animals. There are endless miles
of trails to hike, with must-see landmarks such
as the Cascatinha waterfall and the peak of
Pedra Bonita mountain and ample spaces to
picnic under the forest canopy. If you’re lucky,
you’ll see colourful birds, sloths, monkeys, and
coatis. Open Jeeps are another way to cover a
lot of ground, but for the really adventurous,
there’s a slackline in Pedra da Gávea
where you can practise your acrobatics with
breathtaking views.

The music and the food
Once a year, Rio is in the worldwide spotlight
for its raucous and jubilant Carnival celebration.
During the festivities, traditional samba
music takes centre stage as 12 samba schools
compete in elaborate parades through the
Sambadrome. In the streets, you’ll also hear the
African-influenced drumming subset of samba
known as batucada. Carnival is a special
time, but the city moves to music year round.
Any night of the week, head to the bohemian
Lapa district to enjoy samba and bossa nova,
which merges jazz and samba in a laidback lilt.
Rio de Janeiro is known for blending traditional
Portuguese dishes with Carioca flair. Start the evening
beachside with the classic combination of salgadinhos
(salty fried appetizers) such as bolinhos de bacalhau (salt
cod fritters) with an ice cold pilsner-style local beer
like Brahma chopp (draft). For dinner, try a traditional
feijoada, a stew of beans with beef and pork, or head
to a churrascaria where different cuts of meat are
barbecued and cut off giant skewers tableside.
Once you experience the beat of music, the scenery,
the food, and the warmth of the people, you’ll begin to
count the days till your next trip to the rich culture of
Rio de Janeiro.

Polo is called the sport of kings for good
reason. A fast and furious alliance between
horse and human, this nimble-footed game is the
equine equivalent of Formula One race car driving.
Exclusive by virtue of its associated stable costs, the
international polo circuit attracts an elite following
of wealthy and glamorous patrons. The charm and
allure of Argentinean stable lads and the steamy
intrigues of romance novels all add up to a royal
flush of luxury, surpassing any other sport.
Vancouver may not have professional baseball or
basketball, but it does have polo. And this recent
resurgence probably says more about the ascent of
the city as a major international centre than the
rise in real-estate prices or the growth of designer
shopping.
“Vancouver has arrived,” says Craig Stowe, who
produces Pacific Polo Cup in partnership with
Southlands Riding Club — a nonprofit society
— where the 4th annual edition will be held on
Saturday, July 29th, 2017.
The idyllic club grounds — 16 acres of green
space surrounded by urban ranches and ringed
with spectacular mountain views — feels like a secret
rural retreat on the southern edge of the city.
It created the perfect country setting for a posh
afternoon of polo watching, champagne sipping,
and gourmet lunching, on par with similar events
held in Palm Springs and Miami Beach.
Pacific Polo Cup, presented by Nicola Wealth
Management, will open its gates at 11:30 a.m.,
where guests come dressed in their best linen
suits, bowties, fascinators and broad-brimmed
hats. There are the Best Dressed Awards, so
everyone treats the sartorial component with due
seriousness. Those who may have forgotten their
fancy headgear can purchase a snazzy accoutrement
at the on-site store.
As matches tear down the field, bottles of Veuve
Clicquot will begin to pop in the VIP Polo Lounge
($75 per person, 19+, cash bar) which will be located
on the north side of the field. On the south side
of the field, Vancouver’s renowned Hawksworth
Restaurant will be catering a white-linen luncheon,
a fully inclusive dining experience ($2,500 per table
of 8 seats, 19+) with buckets of Veuve Clicquot
champagne, Heineken beer and Mission Hill wine.
The main attraction is on the field; Team Nicola
Wealth Management, Team Veuve Clicquot,
Team Engel & Völkers and Team Heineken — 16
thoroughbreds and their riders will hit the pitch
for four thrilling matches. Even those who don’t
know a chukker from a mallet can still join in the
spirit of the games by participating in the halftime
divot stomping, a grand old tradition in which
everyone giddily surges forth to help replace the
crevices created by the horse’s hooves.
