TEAM PROFILE
Will Kim Rasmussen bring Hungary back to former glory? The Hungarian
Handball Federation appointed the successful Dane in May 2016 as new head
coach. One week after Rasmussen won the Women’s EHF Champions League
with CSM Bucuresti. The Dane had also coached the Polish women’s national
team before, but was available since he had not renewed his contract.
Before the new era, Hungary were coached for a few months by the coaching
duo Ambros Martin and Gabor Elek on an interim basis; the solution had become
necessary when the federation parted ways with Andras Nemeth earlier this year
after Hungary had failed to make it past the Last 16 at the World Championship
2015 and hence missed out on the chance to qualify for the 2016 Olympics.
Hungary are only one of two teams (the other one being Montenegro) who were
able to end the Norwegian/Danish dominance at EURO events. Hungary took
gold in 2000 and later added bronze to their tally (1998, 2004, 2012). The team’s
most recent history was tragically marked by the death of head coach Karl Erik
Böhn who passed away in February 2014.
