FROM THE NEW LENOX PATRIOT
New Lenox native earns big
role with FSU softball as
freshman
Dani Morgan made a
splash right away as an athlete,
when she entered Lincoln-Way
West as a freshman
in 2013.
Unfortunately for the Warriors,
Morgan’s father got a
job transfer in 2015. So, she
did not get to attend her senior
year at the school.
But that certainly did not
slow her athletic endeavors.
NIGHT
Morgan recently completed
her freshman softball season
at Florida State University,
where she stepped in right
away, becoming a starter and
key contributor on one of the
best softball programs in the
nation.
Morgan, who is majoring
in psychology, played in 62
games, starting 58 of them in
left field. She finished with a
.318 batting average, while
scoring 42 runs and knocking
in 36. Morgan was 9-for-9 in
stolen bases and had 20 extra
base hits — including 11
doubles and five home runs.
“When I moved to Georgia,
I had to start over to prove
myself again,” Morgan said.
“Then, I went to FSU and had
to prove myself again. But my
coaches at FSU are amazing.
They make you want to play
softball. I worked hard and
did what I could do.”
FROM THE HOMER HORIZON
LTHS grad makes most of
current job in Malibu
As Sarah Otteman rounds
the final turn of Malibu Canyon
on her way to work, and
the Pacific Ocean stretches
warmly in front of her, she
realizes she is a long way
from home. And a smile
creeps across her face.
“There’s moments where
I’m driving through the canyon,
it’s 8:30 in the morning,”
she said. “The sun
is shining and glistening
through the clouds in the
mountains and the haze, and
then you pull around that
corner and it’s the ocean.
It’s one of moments where
it’s like, ‘I’m happy right
now.’”
The Lockport Township
High School graduate is the
assistant director of athletic
communications at Pepperdine
University, and she is
soaking up the sights and
experiences every step of
the way.
In her role with the Waves,
she covers men’s and women’s
beach volleyball, men’s
and women’s tennis, and assists
with men’s and women’s
basketball, managing the
university’s athletic website
and social media platforms
for all the aforementioned
sports. She also updates all
the athletes’ and coaches’ biographies,
and takes stats and
photos at games.
FROM THE ORLAND PARK PRAIRIE
Liberty Family Run/
Walk gets Fourth of July
celebration started for Orland
Ave Giblin does not usually
finish ahead of her twin
brother when it comes to running
races.
The 11-year-old not only
beat him out at the Liberty
Family Run/Walk but also
crossed the finish line before
every other female runner in
the field.
“I’m happy to win against
everyone,” Ave said. “And I
felt accomplished, because he
usually wins. He usually does
a lot better than me. I felt really
good after winning.”
Ave was one of 172 runners
who competed in Orland
Park’s annual Liberty Family
Run/Walk June 30 at Centennial
Park.
The 2-mile run is the start
of Orland Park’s celebration
for the Fourth of July weekend.
The Village of Orland
Park also hosted a movie
night at the Centennial Park
Aquatic Center, a free outdoor
concert, and live music
and fireworks during the
celebration, which ran from
June 30 through July 4.
