New Tinley yoga studio offers good vibes for all
Brittany Kapa, Assistant Editor
Patricia Paloumpis said
that in the four years leading
up to opening Vibe Yoga
Room the path was never
straight.
Having worn many different
hats throughout her life,
the 51-year-old had a vision
of what the open space next
to her husband’s chiropractic
business, Beyer Natural
Health Solutions, would
look like.
That vision sprung to
life June 25 as Paloumpis
opened Vibe Yoga Room.
Having noticed a lack of a
yoga studios in Tinley Park,
Paloumpis “super charged”
her desire to get Vibe Yoga
Room up and running.
“I just had a really strong
urge to make yoga more
accessible,” Paloumpis
said. “I wanted to kind of
cut through everything and
make it a little more basic
and accessible.”
She added that she wanted
Vibe to be a place where
someone who is experienced
in yoga could come and get
a really good practice. At the
same time, she wanted the
space to be friendly enough,
so those new to yoga would
feel comfortable starting
their journey at Vibe.
“I’m really enjoying meeting
all of the Tinley Park yogis,”
Paloumpis said about
the studio’s first week of
business. “They are coming
out of the woodwork.
They are finding us and they
are coming in and saying,
‘Thank you for opening up.’
“What I would love this to
bring is a sense of renewal,
health and just that whole
happy, good vibe.”
That is where the name has
come from. When Paloumpis
was struggling to find a
name for her studio, she had
been talking about the different
aspects of the business
with her husband. Each time
she described a section of the
Vibe Yoga Room
business – whether it was the
space’s décor or the teachers
– she would describe it as a
“vibe.”
‘We offer ourselves’
Throughout the planning
process for the studio, there
was one aspect of the business
that just seemed to fall
in place for Paloumpis: her
staff.
Having started her relationship
with yoga in 2004,
and after gaining her teaching
certificate in 2014,
Paloumpis has developed
lasting relationships with
other instructors.
Sherie Sloane, of Mokena,
found yoga after a taekwondo
injury. The two met
at another studio and now
Sloane teaches a few classes
at Vibe.
“We practiced at another
studio together and then we
developed this community
and became friends,” Sloane
said about her relationship
with not only Paloumpis but
also Jenn Christiansen, another
instructor at the studio.
“That’s why I think what’s
good with Vibe is the foundation
of the people working
together. There is a bond,
and I think that will make
this studio stand out.”
Christiansen adds that they
are also a humble bunch of
individuals because they all
realize they have not learned
everything there is to know
about the practice of yoga.
“We offer ourselves – a
very authentic self,” Christiansen
said. “We share
our own practice and what
we’ve learned from our own
experience.
“Yoga is more than just
The Evolution of a POse
Health benefits: By strengthening the intercostal muscles (several muscles that run along the body’s ribs) in
conjunction with breathing, the pose can help to strengthen the internal muscles around vital organs, such as the
lungs.
Vibe instructor Jenn Christiansen models the progression of one yoga move starting from a beginner pose to an
advanced version of the same pose.
not just about the practice.
For me, I come from a traumatic
background, so it’s
been a very healing practice
for me.”
Christiansen and Sloane
both stressed that everyone
starts somewhere and beginners
should not expect to be
able to do each pose perfectly
upon their first try.
“When you fail at something,
you don’t pack up
your bags and leave,” she
added. “The seed is planted,
hopefully, and you can laugh
at yourself. We’re not perfect.
We’re all human.”
Sloane said that even
something as simple as
breathing can be considered
a practice of yoga.
“I really feel like yoga is
a life practice,” Sloane said.
“If you can breathe, you
can do yoga. The first tenet
of yoga is breathing practice.
So, if you’re just being
mindful in your car, I would
call that yoga.”
‘A happy mother is a happy
family’
Yogis of all levels can find
a class that suits their skills.
Vibe also offers a service
called “Kids in Queue.” Certain
classes will have a corresponding
time where parents can drop
off their little ones to be
watched by the studio’s CPR
certified attendant.
that service.
She wanted to give moms
and dads an hour that would
not only be good for their
bodies but the minds, as
well, by creating a stressfree
environment for all.
