I
have come to learn that
Tinley Park residents are
well-travelled folk.
Those photos on the Tinley
Park Historical Society’s
Facebook page are proof
that residents here take some
pretty interesting trips. Likewise,
I have also seen Tinley
Park residents send in photos
of their adorable pets.
Well, folks, we need your
help here. We have been running
a little low on photos for
our Pet of the Week feature.
That’s the one where we
highlight a resident’s pet by
sharing their name, owner’s
name and a brief description.
We also have been running
low on photos for our Photo
Op feature, which you will
notice is missing from this
week’s paper. The Photo Op
is open to anyone who has an
interesting photo to share.
So, if you have any interesting
photos for Photo Op or an
impossibly cute pet that you
would like to share with other
fellow residents of Tinley
Park, send them on down.
You can either email me at
Letters to the editor
‘Where are all the flags?’
My parents moved to
Tinley Park in 1944, I
have always loved Tinley
Park, I went to Arbor Park
Elementary School while
it was on 159th street near
Cicero. When I got married,
I moved into Chicago to be
closer to work but when I
started my family I moved
back to Tinley Park because
I truly believe “It’s a great
place to raise a family.”
I go down 159th a lot and
when I see all the flags they
have in Oak Forest, it gives
me chill bumps. Then when I
get into Tinley Park, “Where
were all the flags?” My husband
was in World War II and
so were a lot of my friends. I
have nieces, nephews, uncles
and my two brothers that
were in the service.
“Where are all the
flags???”
All I counted were six
flags going down Oak Park
Ave. I was so disappointed,
I called utilities (because
that’s where I was told to
call) they told me the flags
block the view of the street
signs, “they never stopped
those flags from flying before,
and they were too
high.”
I was also told there are
a lot of pretty flower baskets
hanging along the way.
Well, our service men and
women didn’t fight for the
flower baskets. They fought
for the freedom of our country
and the flag represents
our country. We should be
proud to fly our flag and
the only time I see where
the whole U.S.A. proudly
flies our flag to show our
independence is on Independence
day. After my call
they put up some more flags,
I think I counted 21 and that
was counting the flags we
always see by the banks or
train station and VFW. Nothing
from 171st Street to the
train station. Nothing.
It’s very disheartening
when our town can’t show
our service people how
much we appreciate the men
& women that took time out
of their lives, and the families
that lost loved ones so
we could have our freedom.
You would think that being
a life long resident of Tinley
Park, the Mayor would show
his pride, not just in Tinley
Park, but in our country and
our service men an women.
