The tinley Junction’s
Standout Student
Sponsored by Marquette Bank
Tyler Milhouse,
Lincoln-Way East
High School
incoming junior
Tyler Milhouse was chosen
as this week’s Standout
Student for her academic
excellence
What is one essential you
must have when studying
and why?
I often find I am most
successful when studying if
I have a game plan. Being
aware of my intentions with
a study session, such as how
long I will study, what subjects
I will study, and the order
in which I will study are
all essential to my success.
What do you like to do when
not in school or studying?
I like to participate in athletics,
particularly running.
I run on my school’s track
and cross country team. I
enjoy becoming strong mentally
and faster physically
throughout both seasons and
pushing myself to achieve a
personal record.
What is your dream job and
why?
My dream job would be
to work for myself and to
help others. I like the idea
of being the boss lady and
I strongly believe in world
improvement. I would like
to manage and own several
free clinic locations throughout
the world.
Photo submitted
Whom do you look up to and
why?
My parents (Tina and Wilber
Milhouse), whom I both
respect and admire. Along
with motivating and challenging
me, they have imparted
values and countless
important life lessons that I
am thankful for. They both
embody a strong sense of responsibility
and accountability
with resilience that they
have developed in me.
Who is your favorite teacher
and why?
I have been fortunate to
have many great teachers
who have all been special to
me in their own way. Nonetheless,
my favorite is my
eighth-grade English teacher
and seventh-grade basketball
coach, Ms. Canter (Summit
Hill Junior High). She pushed
me when she saw that I was
not being challenged to my
full capacity. She empowered
me to see the beauty in my
writing and writing itself.
She taught beyond the grammatical
facts and memorization
of vocab words. Plus, we
think along the same lines.
What is your favorite class
and why?
English is my favorite
class, and kind of always
has been. It has encouraged
me to become analytically
minded, and offered me
new, varying perspectives.
English has actively contributed
to who I am. It has
helped develop my ideas and
beliefs, enabling me to grow
each year both intellectually
as well as theoretically.
What is one thing that
stands out about your
school?
We are Lincoln-Way
united. I think that the
sense of community within
my school is one thing that
stands out about it. I love the
friendliness among both the
students and faculty. I recognize
Lincoln-Way East as
my home away from home.
If you could change one thing
about school, what would
it be?
If I could change one thing
about my school, I would
offer the option of having
lunch, study hall or even
class outside on a nice day to
have a break from the normal
routine of the school day.
What is your best memory
from school?
Although this is not my
fondest memory, during my
freshman year in honors biology
— I think it was our
last project of the year — my
teacher announced that we
would be doing dissection
on an actual rat. The day the
rats arrived in the classroom,
my fear of rodents was confirmed.
A few tears rolled
down my cheek because I
feared having to touch it, not
to mention being surrounded
by them in class. I ended up
doing an online simulation
in the comfort of the hallway
that week.
