outdid themselves again! (pg 6-9).
The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon
was also packed with action and
excitement again this year. Check out the
highlights (pg10&11), and while you’re
feeling inspired, read what our MD Dave
Macready had to say about completing the
gruelling Cape Epic Cycle Tour (pg12).
Innovation is what will keep us going strong
for the next 172 years and we look at some
initiatives aimed at helping us transform
The Old Mutual village
It takes a village to raise a child and since I came to work
in Old Mutual, I realised the true meaning of this phrase.
We have wonderful initiatives that expose people like
me to opportunities like tertiary education. I have been
following Old Mutual’s bursary funding closely and it’s
great. It’s every school leaver’s dream to attend university,
however, most of these children are not able to chase
their dreams. Thanks to Old Mutual and the Old Mutual
Education Trust, actuarial resource development, Mfundo
Trust etc, there are life-changing opportunities for people
like me. Old Mutual is not just a place of employment for
these youngsters, it is a mentor, coach, a place of hope,
the biggest part of the village. Well done Old Mutual.
We are water wise!
The giant human water drop created at Mutualpark
recently was brilliant! We’re on this planet for a short
period of time and we need to change our thinking
In terms of how we use its resources. It’s scary to
consider that a simple thing like playing in a bath is
something my children might not know in the future
because the generations before them didn’t take care
of what we were given. We are today’s custodians
of tomorrow’s earth and we should all roll up our
sleeves and get involved. We are working for a
Responsible Company but we must not forget that
WE are Responsible employees. Responsible citizens.
feels real good!
Old Mutual celebrated its 172nd birthday in May and Mutualites across emerging markets
embraced the birthday theme: the power of 2getherness. As always, a highlight of the
festivities was Diversity Day and we celebrated the diversity that keeps our culture strong
and agile in the face of constant change.
‘As Old Mutual turns 172, let us
celebrate our strong heritage and
solid culture of our multinational
organisation. Let us also be
proud of the history, journey
and socio-economic impact our
business continues to make in
fourteen different countries.’
Mutualites in Johannesburg and Cape Town
got together during the birthday week to
make sandwiches for Food Forward SA, who
redistribute food to hundreds of verified NPO’s that
collectively feed thousands of hungry people in
our communities. We made 3 259 sandwiches in
Cape Town and 710 in Johannesburg. Employees
also donated R11 670 to Food Forward SA from
their own pockets as part of Purposeful Friday.
#GOGREEN was developed by Wildlands
and supported by Old Mutual. It aims to
provide a practical solution for collecting
waste from athletes and spectators at
endurance events, while educating them
about not littering, as well as recycling
and upcycling. All waste collected will be
upcycled into Green Desks to help address
the desk shortage in many underprivileged
schools in South Africa.
At OMTOM this year:
••
16 tons of plastic was recovered which will make a classroom of desks
LEADERSHIP
Dave Macready, CEO Old Mutual
South Africa, recently completed
his fifth Cape Epic cycle tour,
a gruelling eight-day mountain
bike stage race. No stranger
to endurance sports, which
make up the heart of
Old Mutual’s sponsorship
portfolio, Dave shares
his epic experience
with us.
T
his prestigious race attracts a large international contingent,
with almost 40% of the 2016 race made up of international
riders. This year the Masters Category was won by George
Hincapie and Cadel Evans, who won the Tour de France in 2011.
Dave and his partner, Nic Andrew from Nedbank, finished
168th out of 666 teams, making it through 700km of unspoilt
Western Cape scenery and 15 000m of accumulated climbing
over the most magnificent mountain passes in South Africa.
‘I have been doing endurance events since my early 20’s and it’s
the ultimate test,’ says Dave. ‘While you compete against other
teams in very difficult and challenging environments, you also
compete against yourself on both a physical and mental level.
‘I do the Epic because it’s the ‘Tour de France’ of mountain biking.
It’s called “Untamed”, because the environment and the course is
raw, untouched and not at all prepared for racing.
‘It takes motivation, determination and focus to complete an Epic.
From an existing good level of fitness you need a minimum of six
months to specifically prepare for the event. The hardest physical
part is the preparation, the race is more of a mental challenge.
‘Our preparation as a team started in October and we worked
on a specific programme, focussing initially on building strength
and endurance. We competed in a number of lead-up races to
practise our teamwork and tactics and used indoor watt bike
training for high intensity workouts.
‘In this year's race the heat was the worst. In stage one,
temperatures reached mid 40’s by midday and resulted in the
biggest fall-out in Epic history: 94 teams withdrew. In these
extreme situations you only focus on survival to finish the day,
so that you can rest and recover to race the next day.
‘The camaraderie and teamwork were highlights. Key to success
was staying healthy for eight days and being able to complete
the race!
‘My advice to new riders would be that you need to understand
why you’re doing it. The “why” keeps you motivated and
focussed when you need it the most.
‘It’s also critical to choose the right partner. Epic race rules require
that team members can’t be more than two minutes apart and you
race, eat, sleep and live together for a week. Ultimately, this is a
team event.’
2
3
The issue of “inclusion” has become urgent
Inclusion and a stronger sense of community is key to making the most of
Africa’s opportunities and addressing its problems.
Digital technology is set to play a big role in enabling the entrepreneurs
and corporates of Africa to connect, share and collaborate on business
and other opportunities across borders.
There is opportunity for growth through
consolidated networks leading to collective
problem solving
As a collection of 54 countries, we need to work together as one and
accept that Africa’s problems need to be addressed by African countries.
To overcome funding and scale challenges, trust and collaboration between
governments and business must be built, and a long term view developed.
Africa needs to set its own agenda
Most African issues are unique and each African country must assess and
develop itself based on its own unique situation. Collaboration can then
follow based on each country’s ability to help the other.
Instability and lack of governance are key problems. We need to take
ownership of solutions that are home grown and appropriate, partnering
with the rest of the world as opposed to begging for help.
4
5
Education, entrepreneurship
and innovation can be key
catalysts for growth and
inclusion
The youth of Africa need to seize the many
opportunities and develop them, but this
is not possible without awareness of those
opportunities and the know-how to grow them.
To develop Africa’s strong entrepreneurial
ethic, we must inspire and build confidence,
and provide access to funds, management
tools and advice.
Leadership
The role of business is changing: business has
to take seriously its responsibility to address
unemployment and be prepared to use its
resources and expertise to respond to issues
even if they are not in our area of operations.
What is needed to address our challenges is
dialogue (particularly with youth, who are the
majority of the continent’s population) that is
ongoing, inclusive and practical.
Old Mutual recently
launched two exciting
initiatives to help
us stay relevant in
a technologically
transforming world,
and create value for
our customers.
Finding the big ideas
Old Mutual's new partnership with Startupbootcamp InsurTech, a
London-based accelerator programme, will give us access to the
foremost innovation and entrepreneurial thinking in the insurance
space.
We will use the partnership to explore how to streamline,
reorganise or redesign our business model, legacy processes and
systems to meet customers’ changing needs and enhance their
experience. Old Mutual will tap into the most innovative solutions
emerging from the accelerator's 10 start-ups in 2017 by learning
from these players and potentially procuring their services,
partnering with or investing in them.
Approximately 2 500 startups were scouted since July 2016
and only 10 selected from all over the world, including three
from South Africa, to participate in an intensive 3-month
Acceleration Programme that began in January this year. During
the Programme, startups receive skills and tools relaying efficient
methods of shaping, building and selling their propositions.
Further, they are supported by an extensive network of insurers,
angel investors, mentors and various other valuable resources.
The Programme then culminated in a Demo Day at the end of
April during which the startups (including a Startup-in-Residence)
pitched their ideas to over 850 investors, mentors, partners, and
media.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerged as the key advanced
technology to have the most potential to impact the insurance
industry – 80% of Startupbootcamp InsurTech’s 2017 cohort is
leveraging AI in their propositions to develop new products and
services. The insurance market is ripe for change, and through
collaboration a bridge is gradually being built to connect the two
converging worlds.
Amicus June 2017.indd 14
2017/05/30 12:14 PM
‘This partnership gives us early exposure to numerous emerging
developments in InsurTech across the globe,’ says David Marshall, Chief
Commercial Officer of Old Mutual Emerging Markets, and makes it
possible to explore various engagement prospects with startups ranging
from observation to experimentation to partnership to investment.
‘The start-ups in turn have the opportunity to leverage our expertise,
experience, resources and talent to build more compelling commercial
propositions. The result is a mutually beneficial exchange that
empowers both parties to achieve their core objectives.
Over 450 startups have been accelerated by Startupbootcamp’s
various programmes globally, and they have collectively raised over
€240 million in investment. 2017 is the second year in which the
InsurTech programme is being run and it will wrap up in 2018.
Technology is evolving at a breakneck
pace, not only for individuals, but
for companies and governments
too. The 2017 World Economic
Forum in Davos had a big focus
on the 'fourth industrial revolution'
(tech developments, automation and
INNOVATION
T
here’s no doubt anymore that technology
and digital devices make our lives easier.
In South Africa, 49% of the total population
are active internet users and spend more time
looking at their smartphones than any other
screen. So why not use technology to help us
manage our finances?
In February, Old Mutual Wealth launched My
Wealth Trader, an intuitive online trading
platform offering access to local and global
shares anywhere, anytime and across all smart
devices.
For Old Mutual, the ease of doing business
is top of mind, so opening a new account or
switching an existing portfolio is quick and
seamless. You can also stay up to date with
economic news through a news feed, which
you can customise to your preferences.
So whether you’re chilling in sunny Cape Town,
or cycling through the landscapes of Italy, you
can now trade wherever, whenever.
My Wealth Trader was first launched to employees around the country and Mutualites had the opportunity
to step into a virtual world to see real-time trades, view stock watch lists and explore market news.
‘The VR experience was pretty cool,
I loved it! What stands out the most
about My Wealth Trader is the quick
response, access to information and
competitive fee structure.’
‘The VR experience was a nice way to showcase
the ease of access to the trading platform. I like
that you can trade from any device, whether
tablet or phone. This is important because you
want to be able to trade on the move.’
Old Mutual has
introduced a new
social media policy
for employees that is
part of the Old Mutual
Code of Conduct. This
policy has been created
to protect both you and
Old Mutual so check it out
and make sure you’re social
media savvy!
H
uman beings are social creatures so it’s easy to understand why social media has so quickly become part of who we are.
Social media connects millions of people across the world every day and has become an essential tool for businesses.
Old Mutual employees all have an opportunity and responsibility to protect and build Old Mutual’s reputation online.
Here are three key pillars to guide you:
1. INTEGRITY
Always represent Old Mutual and yourself ethically and with integrity.
Don’t discredit Old Mutual in your personal capacity - we are one team!
2. DISCRETION
Don’t disclose confidential company and client information online.
3. BE RESPECTFUL
Old Mutual is a global organisation whose employees and customers
reflect a diverse set of cultures, values and points of view. Don’t be
afraid to be yourself, but do so respectfully.
1. DO POINT OUT THAT YOU’RE NOT
AN OFFICIAL SPOKESPERSON
Use a disclaimer in your online profile such as ‘Views are my
own and not those of my employer’. But remember that this
won’t legally protect you if you still post anything harmful to our
brand or reputation.
2. DO KNOW THE POLICIES
Make sure you’ve read Old Mutual’s various policies:
••
Old Mutual Code of Conduct
••
Confidentiality
••
Protection of Personal Information
3. DO RECOGNISE THAT YOU’RE
ENTERING A SOCIAL SYSTEM –
BE POLITE
Social media is like any public social event. The same good
manners apply: introduce yourself, don’t pretend to be someone
else and don’t intrude in or interrupt the conversations of others.
4. DO REMEMBER:
ONLINE NEVER FORGETS!
What you publish will be public for a very long time. Your posts
can also be screengrabbed, published elsewhere and amplified
within seconds. The delete button may not be the end of an
ill-considered post.
5. DO THINK BEFORE YOU RETWEET
Even just retweeting a defamatory post could mean trouble
with the law.
I CAME ACROSS A NEGATIVE POST ABOUT
TRANSFORMATION
Old Mutual
programme to boost
transformation in the
financial services sector.
T
he Infinitum Initiative is a partnership with the Black
Distributors' Trust, Masthead Financial Planning and
Old Mutual Foundation, created to grow the number of
black independent financial advisers (IFAs) and create
new employment opportunities.
Currently, 10 young, black financial advisors were selected
and are being trained to launch their own future-fit independent
brokerages within two years.
The initiative includes a two year training programme
incorporating product, compliance and other skills development,
to assist the group in becoming successful broker principals with
the necessary skills to start their own practices.
‘We believe that customers benefit immensely from financial
planning that is provided by a robust, diverse intermediary force,’
said Karabo Morule, Managing Director of Personal Finance,
‘and independent advisers play a key role to make our industry
continue to thrive.
‘With the Infinitum Initiative, we want to take these 10
entrepreneurial-minded and independent financial advisers and
create 10 new independent brokerage businesses by the end of
the programme.
‘They in turn can then create 10 to 20 employment opportunities –
and the virtuous circle of growing entrepreneurship and delivering
great customer service continues.’
The Black Distributors Trust is providing the funding for the two
year programme, which includes theory learning, practical
applications and one-on-one mentorship. The programme will help
advisers integrate the principles of financial planning and equip
them with skills needed to start a small business, by empowering
them to respond effectively to regulatory challenges and a
changing environment, while running a sustainable business.
The 10 selected independent financial advisers are Reece
OPPORTUNITY ROADSHOW
O
ld Mutual is a gold sponsor of the third Small, Medium and Micro enterprises
(SMME) Opportunity Roadshow. For the first time, various business units in
Old Mutual are collaborating to present a united front and tell one Old Mutual story.
The SMME sector is key to unlocking economic growth and development in South
Africa and the roadshow is a platform for exchanging insights and ideas, debating
solutions and exploring new and creative ways of working with the private and
public sector to bring about positive change.
Most importantly, it is an opportunity for entrepreneurs to access great advice from
experienced business people and stakeholders. It connects experienced entrepreneurs
and businesses with SMMEs to provide advice, support and opportunities.
‘Old Mutual, as a responsible business, recognises that the development of SMMEs
contributes positively to the growth and sustainability of South Africa – and also our
business,’ says Simpiwe Somdyala, General Manager: Corporate Affairs.
‘By increasing the number of successful entrepreneurs who start, grow and sustain
their businesses and create jobs, we help to drive the kind of economic growth that
will benefit a broad base of South Africans. And what’s good for South Africa is
good for Old Mutual.’
••
R2 billion towards SMME financing
in 2016.
••
R40 million was committed to the CEO
Initiative’s SA SME Fund.
••
R142 million was invested in financial
education and skills and community
development.
••
R400 million in loans disbursed since
2007, through the Masisizane Fund,
which focuses on financing, developing
and supporting SMMEs.
••
R111 million in loans was approved
in 2016 and R147 million disbursed
against a target of R129 million.
••
862 jobs were created in 2016 against
a target of 625.
The roadshow kicked off in Johannesburg in April, visited Port Elizabeth in May,
and will move on to Durban on 19 July and Cape Town on 6 September.
As a responsible
Bringing critical services to townships
Futuregrowth Asset Management, a
boutique of Old Mutual Investment Group
(OMIG), manages the Futuregrowth
Community Property Fund, a shining
example of a fund making a social impact.
It delivers very real social and development
benefits to communities in rural areas and
townships by acquiring and expanding
new and existing local shopping centres.
Each shopping centre is a catalyst for the
development of municipal infrastructure in
the area, along with an enhanced transport
infrastructure, while the surrounding
community benefits from increased
employment opportunities and access to
a wide range of shopping facilities and
commercial services. The fund currently
owns 18 properties across South Africa.
Good news for investors is that the fund has
performed brilliantly for the second year
running, delivering 24.3% for the 12-month
period ending December 2016, compared
to SA’s listed property sector’s return of
10.20% for the same period.
RESPONSIBLE INVESTMENT
The parking lots at many of the fund’s shopping centres are underutilised
as consumers use mainly taxis, buses and trains. Seeing
an opportunity to use this space to bring a critical service to the
community, the fund partnered with Unjani Clinic at Diepsloot
Mall in October 2015.
The clinic is set up in a converted shipping container in the mall
parking lot site, free of charge, and has exceeded expectations,
receiving over 578 visits in the second month, which most clinics
take 12-18 months to achieve.
Unjani Clinic is funded by Imperial Health Sciences and is a
network of primary health care clinics owned and operated
by black female qualified nurses, and providing accessible,
affordable healthcare to local communities. The clinics are based
on a franchise model that opens entrepreneurial opportunities for
local women.
The community benefits from easier access to a low-cost,
affordable clinic, government has a little less pressure on their
resources at overburdened state clinics and small business gets a
boost. The shopping centre benefits from more feet to the centre
and supports a much-needed service in the community.
A decade of delivery
In a move that shook up the asset management industry in South
Africa 10 years ago, Old Mutual Asset Managers (OMAM)
rebranded as a multi-boutique asset manager to form Old Mutual
Investment Group (OMIGSA) - a multi-boutique investment
manager.
Boutique managers were given the autonomy to take critical
business and investment decisions that drive performance, and
no longer subscribed to a single house view. A decade later the
‘The move to boutiques
required enormous
effort, but has
positioned us very well
for the future. This is
because we are aligned
with our clients, focused
and have resolved the
problem of excess size.’
PETER BROOKE
Boutique Head: MacroSolutions
boutique model is still going strong, with most founding members
still running the boutiques: Peter Brooke (MacroSolutions), Peter
Linley (Old Mutual Equities), Paul Boynton (OMAI) and Paul
Rackstraw and Andrew Canter (Futuregrowth).
The boutique structure also ensures that the focus and interests of
the investment professionals are completely aligned with those
of their clients. Their remuneration is largely determined by the
performance of the boutiques, so investment managers only do
well when their clients do well.
OMIG is in good shape, with great teams, processes, philosophy
and investment track records, and poised to grow. There are
opportunities to increase assets under management in the bond,
equity and multi-asset class area, passive investing is growing
and further investments planned into the Alternatives capability to
create growth into Africa.
There are plans to expand OMIG’s distribution reach globally to
gather dollar-based asset pools. Old Mutual Titan, the new Active
Fundamental Global Equity team, was also recently welcomed to
the business to help build the global strategy. They arrive having
already built up a strong track record in managing global equity
and global emerging market equity.
‘Life insurance should be more than just funeral expenses and the elaborate sending off of
a loved one. It should also be a tool for preserving wealth and ensuring that the needs of
dependents left behind are provided for.’
Thebe Modikwa, Old Mutual Life
Director, addresses guests
While there are currently eight life insurance companies in Botswana serving a population
of approximately two million people, the regulators' report shows that the top two dominate
87.5% of the market.
The priority for Old Mutual Botswana Life will be to shift public perception of life insurance
from a simple funeral policy and short-term-goal, to a holistic tool that can be used to
preserve wealth and give the next generation a better start in life.
n 2013, Old Mutual committed R350 million over seven years, towards improving the South African education system. The process
is largely driven by the Old Mutual Education Flagship project (OMEFP) and focuses on investing in Grade 12 maths and science
education, uplifting underperforming schools and improving teaching and school management.
There are some amazing success stories coming out of this project and some shining stars from the OMEFP matric class of 2016.
Beating the odds in Dimbaza
18 year-old Christine Bobo, a former
Kuyasa High School pupil from Dimbaza,
Eastern Cape, lives with her three siblings
and they survive on her grandmother’s oldage
grant, often going without basics such
as electricity.
To add to Christine’s challenges, Kuyasa
High did not have a mathematics teacher
for almost a year, so the school’s physical
science teacher tried to double up as a
mathematics teacher as well.
Christine put in many long, hard hours
of study, and despite the challenges, she
passed Grade 12 with three distinctions:
in geography, life orientation and
natural science, and achieved 62% in
mathematics and 74% in science.
Mr Tonya, the substitute maths teacher,
also entered Christine and two other
learners for a Science Olympiad
sponsored by Eskom at the University of
Fort Hare. They came 2nd in the Quiz
category and 1st in the Poster and Projects
category.
Christine is now enrolled at the University
of the Witwatersrand for a BSc degree,
and is awaiting approval of her NSFAS
application for funding.
The First Old Mutual Scholarship Fund Graduate!
23 year-old Simamkele Gcezengana is the first beneficiary of the Old Mutual Scholarship
Fund to graduate. She completed her studies at Rhodes University in December 2016,
graduating with a B.Pharm. degree.
Simamkele’s from Ginsberg, a small township outside King William’s Town in the Eastern
Cape. At Schornville Primary School she was deputy head-girl and later at Breidbach
Senior Secondary School, an Old Mutual Education Flagship School, she was one of the
top five learners from Grade 8 to 12.
In 2012, Simamkele enrolled at Rhodes University for a B.Sc degree, and soon realised
that she wanted to study something that would enable her to make more of a direct
contribution to her fellow citizens.
In 2013 she switched to a B.Pharm and in her third year was chosen as a mentor for
first-year pharmacy students. Simamkele is currently completing her internship in 2017 at
Groote Schuur Hospital.
‘My dream is to open and run my own pharmacy in a small rural place in the Eastern Cape or KwaZulu-Natal, where people have less
access to good pharmacy services and resources,' she says.
‘It was such an honour and privilege to receive the Old Mutual Scholarship. I hope I will continue making my sponsors proud and I am
more motivated to help other young people like me where I can. Enkosi Old Mutual.’
Old Mutual has contributed R3 million to the tuition and residence costs of
students of the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). The donation will assist
undergraduate and postgraduate students who cannot afford to pay university fees,
but also do not qualify for National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) funding.
The emphasis will be on students studying commerce (with a focus on actuarial and
accounting studies), mathematics, engineering, information technology and law.
BUSINESS HIGHLIGHTS
MANAGED SEPARATION
MANAGED SEPARATION UPDATE BY BRUCE HEMPHILL
A New Dawn
'We are very pleased with the progress of our
managed separation strategy announced on 11
March 2016,' said Bruce Hemphill, Group CEO, Old Mutual.
'We expected the managed separation to be complete by the end
of 2018. Just 15 months in we’ve built great momentum and now
anticipate the two listings taking place at the earliest opportunity
in 2018, following our 2017 full year results.
As a reminder, we will create four independent businesses:
Old Mutual Emerging Markets (OMEM), Old Mutual Wealth
(OMW), Nedbank and OM Asset Management (OMAM).
Through the separation of our businesses, we are seeking to
unlock significant value for our shareholders. We have taken a
number of significant steps:
1. We have reduced our shareholding in OMAM to 22.4%.
On completion of all transactions we will have realised gross
proceeds, since December 2016, of over a billion US dollars
with respect to OMAM, reducing our stake to under 8%. This
will deliver independence to the first of our four businesses.
2. On 27 April 2017, we announced that we would sell our
26% stake in Kotak Mahindra Old Mutual Life Insurance
Limited to our joint venture partner, Kotak Mahindra Bank
Limited. The gross consideration for the transaction was INR
12,927 million (£156 million equivalent based on the spot
exchange rate on the day of announcement).
Going forward it is our intention to create two separate entities
listed on both the London and Johannesburg stock exchanges:
1. One will be OMW, likely to take place through
a demerger with the possibility of a small initial public
offering (IPO).
2. The second will be a new South African holding company
called ‘Old Mutual Limited’. Initially it will comprise OMEM,
the Group’s Nedbank shareholding and Old Mutual plc,
which will become a subsidiary of Old Mutual Limited. The
distribution of a significant proportion of the shareholding
in Nedbank from Old Mutual Limited would follow in due
course. Old Mutual Limited will retain an appropriate strategic
minority shareholding in Nedbank to underpin the ongoing
commercial relationship.'
created a new
E-Learning site to
encourage members to take control of their finances, whether
it’s planning for a wedding, short-term insurance for your car
or house, sorting out your will or saving for retirement. The
interactive site also features some great member stories and
video clips and access to advice. The four modules currently
available are Short-Term Insurance, Wills & Estate Planning,
Financial Planning and Retirement Planning.
Old Mutual maintains Level 2
B-BBEE status
Old Mutual has retained its Level 2 B-BBEE status for the 8th
year in a row. We've made some great improvements in terms
of skills development and employment equity and are carefully
monitoring progress at a middle, senior management and board
level. We're also gearing up to move beyond just compliance in
terms of the revised Financial Sector Code, which will be passed
later this year.
we believe every
The Learning Centre of Excellence, in partnership
with the Gordon Institute of Business Science
(GIBS), concluded two Junior Management
programmes (JMP NQF level 5) and one Middle
Management programme (MMP NQF level 6) in
2016. These programmes were run across Old
Mutual, Nedbank and Mutual & Federal, with the
goal of developing personal, management and
leadership skills. Delegates worked on several
business projects where they implemented learnings
gained from the programme.
MAP
For the very first time the Management Advancement
Programme (MAP NQF level 8) was run in both
Johannesburg and Cape Town. Over 70 delegates
attended, with 16 from our businesses in Rest of Africa as
well Mutual & Federal. This provided a great opportunity
to build relationships and formalise networks across the
Group. The MAP programme develops knowledge and
skills across the six functional areas of business and
delegates have to complete a strategic project formulated
and sponsored by a senior leader in our business.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
at
Old Mutual is busy transforming and harnessing the latest technology
to improve our proposition and service for customers, advisers and
employees. Conrad Blignaut, General Manager Solution Delivery, is
passionate about growing people in the Solution Delivery space.
‘With technology being a critical enabler of transformation, Solution
Delivery has a big focus on developing talent – technical and
managerial. Making sure we have the right people with the right
skills and experience for the future is essential and exciting. We have
the opportunity to innovate and make a huge difference to people’s
lives,’ says Conrad.
‘Take our 13 interns – people from mostly rural, impoverished
parts of the country, who through sheer pluck and determination,
completed degrees. A very hard next step is landing the first
job. Typically, they become despondent as it is difficult to find
appropriate employment.’
What learners have to say:
‘Coming into this environment is scary. I humbly appreciate the
opportunity Old Mutual has given me. Old Mutual opened the
door to green pastures.’
Sinalo Sanda
'Old Mutual is truly a great place to work. I’m excited about the
opportunity to grow, learn, and make a positive contribution.’
Mali Ndyoko
‘Thank you Old Mutual for opening doors for me so I can learn
and grow. Green pastures lie ahead.’
Nomputumo Jim
IT has a range of development programmes. Some bring in people
with no IT experience – such as the Interns programme, while others
focus on existing, high potential employees – such as Pioneers and
Inside Track. All of them aim to fast-track growth. The programmes
include self-mastery, technical and interpersonal skills and each
person has a coach and mentor.
CROWN JEWELS
In April, Rose Keanly hosted the first Crown Jewel
User Town Hall session at Mutualpark, for users
who have access to Old Mutual’s most sensitive
information – our Crown Jewels.
The sessions outline the vital role that these users
play in protecting our information, in particular our
customer information. Sensitive customer information
includes personal details such as a name, address,
identification number, health information, banking
details, location and value of movable assets. The
Town Hall sessions and customised Crown Jewel
user training sessions help Crown Jewel users
understand the steps they need to take on a daily
basis to safeguard this sensitive information.
This online platform gives you the opportunity to participate in or support the events you love while raising funds for pre-approved
charities. This year Old Mutual is also supporting #GOGREEN, developed by Wildlands, and created to collect waste materials along
the route to be upcycled into ‘green desks’ for underprivileged schools. Visit www.morethanyourself.co.za and become a fundraiser or
support an existing fundraiser and challenge family and friends to support this cause!
