Old Mutual recently
launched two exciting
initiatives to help
us stay relevant in
a technologically
transforming world,
and create value for
our customers.
Finding the big ideas
Old Mutual's new partnership with Startupbootcamp InsurTech, a
London-based accelerator programme, will give us access to the
foremost innovation and entrepreneurial thinking in the insurance
space.
We will use the partnership to explore how to streamline,
reorganise or redesign our business model, legacy processes and
systems to meet customers’ changing needs and enhance their
experience. Old Mutual will tap into the most innovative solutions
emerging from the accelerator's 10 start-ups in 2017 by learning
from these players and potentially procuring their services,
partnering with or investing in them.
Approximately 2 500 startups were scouted since July 2016
and only 10 selected from all over the world, including three
from South Africa, to participate in an intensive 3-month
Acceleration Programme that began in January this year. During
the Programme, startups receive skills and tools relaying efficient
methods of shaping, building and selling their propositions.
Further, they are supported by an extensive network of insurers,
angel investors, mentors and various other valuable resources.
The Programme then culminated in a Demo Day at the end of
April during which the startups (including a Startup-in-Residence)
pitched their ideas to over 850 investors, mentors, partners, and
media.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerged as the key advanced
technology to have the most potential to impact the insurance
industry – 80% of Startupbootcamp InsurTech’s 2017 cohort is
leveraging AI in their propositions to develop new products and
services. The insurance market is ripe for change, and through
collaboration a bridge is gradually being built to connect the two
converging worlds.
