O
lympic marathoner Lungile Gongqa took top
honours in the 2017 Old Mutual Two Oceans
Marathon (OMTOM), the largest running event
on the African continent, crossing the finish line in
03:09:43 and becoming the first Capetonian since
1973 to take the Ultra title. In the women's race,
Maryna Damantsevich from Belarus took the title
with a 10-minute lead, in a time of 03:37:13.
Men's winner: Lungile Gongqa
In the Half Marathon, Namakoe Nkhasi
successfully defended his title in the men’s race
and set a new OMTOM Half Marathon record
of 01:03:15. Irvette van Zyl reclaimed her Half
Marathon title in the women’s race in a time of
01:13:53.
Old Mutual’s R1 million prize to the male and
female runner breaking the Ultra Marathon
records still stands for another year, after the
1988 and 1989 records established by Thompson
Magawana (03:03:44) and Frith van der Merwe
(03:30:36) proved just too tough this year.
Women's winner: Maryna Damantsevich
