At Old Mutual we believe every employee has the potential to grow and develop both personally and in their careers. We take a look at two programmes designed to build individual and organisational capability. JMP, MMP The Learning Centre of Excellence, in partnership with the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), concluded two Junior Management programmes (JMP NQF level 5) and one Middle Management programme (MMP NQF level 6) in 2016. These programmes were run across Old Mutual, Nedbank and Mutual & Federal, with the goal of developing personal, management and leadership skills. Delegates worked on several business projects where they implemented learnings gained from the programme. MAP For the very first time the Management Advancement Programme (MAP NQF level 8) was run in both Johannesburg and Cape Town. Over 70 delegates attended, with 16 from our businesses in Rest of Africa as well Mutual & Federal. This provided a great opportunity to build relationships and formalise networks across the Group. The MAP programme develops knowledge and skills across the six functional areas of business and delegates have to complete a strategic project formulated and sponsored by a senior leader in our business. Nomination onto these programmes takes place via your line manager and HR business partners. LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT at Old Mutual is busy transforming and harnessing the latest technology to improve our proposition and service for customers, advisers and employees. Conrad Blignaut, General Manager Solution Delivery, is passionate about growing people in the Solution Delivery space. ‘With technology being a critical enabler of transformation, Solution Delivery has a big focus on developing talent – technical and managerial. Making sure we have the right people with the right skills and experience for the future is essential and exciting. We have the opportunity to innovate and make a huge difference to people’s lives,’ says Conrad. ‘Take our 13 interns – people from mostly rural, impoverished parts of the country, who through sheer pluck and determination, completed degrees. A very hard next step is landing the first job. Typically, they become despondent as it is difficult to find appropriate employment.’ What learners have to say: ‘Coming into this environment is scary. Green pastures lie ahead.’ Nomputumo Jim IT has a range of development programmes. Some bring in people with no IT experience – such as the Interns programme, while others focus on existing, high potential employees – such as Pioneers and Inside Track. All of them aim to fast-track growth. The programmes include self-mastery, technical and interpersonal skills and each person has a coach and mentor.
