buying rush at XyZ open house 

XYZ Machine Tools’ open houses continue to 

draw in customers both old and new, with the 

recent event held at its Sheffield showroom 

continuing that trend. Traditionally these event 

see the showroom stock sold on a first come – 

first served basis, with buyers keen to pick up 

an early bargain. 

With the Sheffield showroom being the 

smallest of XYZ Machine Tools’ five 

showrooms, with only five machines on display 

visitors had to be prompt, but once those 

machines had sold the orders continued to 

come, with 23 machines being sold on the day 

valued at just under £1 million. Like all XYZ 

showrooms the machines on display cover 

every control option supplied as standard by 

the company, these being ProtoTRAK and 

Siemens. This allows the showroom to provide 

demonstration and training facilities for local 

customers.. 

“The response from customers at this event 

was brilliant,” says Nigel Atherton, XYZ 

Machine Tools Managing Director. “This 

success is backed by continuing good levels of 

business across our range of machines from a 

wide variety of customers. Hopefully, this 

confidence among machine tool buyers and the 

UK manufacturing sector in general remains for 

the foreseeable future. We are also seeing strong 

sales from across Europe, with record numbers 

being generated.”

£6 million investment to train 

engineers of the future 

The first Engineering Technologies Group 

training Academy opened on the site of Iconic 

motorcycle brand Norton. The Academies are 

part of a major investment by Engineering 

Technologies Group, with help from strategic 

partners, including WNT (UK), that will 

address engineering skills faced by businesses, 

young people and the engineering sector as a 

whole. Each academy will be equipped with 

world leading CNC machine tools and 

precision technology with the technical partners 

providing equipment and software to deliver 

advanced manufacturing cells. In addition to 

training new engineers, these academies will 

also be used as demonstration facilities and to 

assist SMEs with production issues.” 

“We are pleased to be involved with this 

initiative as we have a long record of working 

with training and education providers to 

encourage the next generation of engineers,” 

says Adrian Fitts, WNT’s Business 

Development Manager. “With these 

Engineering Technology Group Academies we 

will be supplying tooling packages for each 

machine and supporting those through our 

Applications Engineer Steve Warner, who will 

coordinate our partnership with ETG and 

develop demonstration pieces and provide 

technical support.” 

The 250 m2 technical academy at Norton 

Motorcycles contains six high-tech CNC 

machine tools from ETG’s range which will in 

addition to training new apprentices, will also 

be utilised as a new prototyping cell for Norton, 

where they can quickly trial the manufacture of 

new parts for their range of British-built bikes 

that are highly sought-after by enthusiasts 

across the world. Engineering Technology 

Group Managing Director, Martin Doyle 

highlighted the need for such facilities, saying: 

“There is a real need for industry to get to grips 

with developing the skills of the next generation 

of engineers and those already working in the 

sector. Put bluntly, the current education 

platform is broken and not relevant to the world 

we operate in. Instead of bemoaning our luck 

and lack of support, we’ve decided to do 

something about it with the launch of our 

national network.”

When McGreevy Engineering made a strategic 

decision to move into the aerospace industry, 

the company recognised the relatively complex 

component manufacture required multiple and 

time consuming set-ups. The Belfast subcontract 

business realised it needed to take its first step 

into 5-axis machining, the machine of choice was 

the Vcenter AX800 from Victor CNC. 

Tommy Hanna, Works Manager at 

McGreevy Engineering says: “Until now a lot of 

the work we’ve been doing has required us to do 

it in 3 or 4 different operations. We saw a need to 

buy a 5-axis, first of all to compete with our 

competition and cut-out operations to help 

make us more competitive.” 

Relatively new to the UK marketplace, the 

Vcenter AX800 appealed to the AS: 9100 

certified manufacturer for a number of reasons, 

as Tommy says: “We already had a Victor CNC 

lathe and it’s been very reliable. So, the reason 

we bought the AX800 was because it has a 

bigger capacity than most of its competitors. It 

has 1.6m in the X-axis. This allows us to use it as 

a large bed 3-axis machine as well as a very 

versatile and robust 5-axis.” 

The company has a variety of 3-axis 

machining centres but with the 5-axis AX800, 

the company needed more tool positions. As Mr 

Hanna recalls: “Obviously with 5-axis we need 

more tool stations to hit the job from all 

directions and the AX800 has 40 tool positions. 

Added to this, the Victor AX800 is the first 

machine we have with a BBT40 spindle 

configuration. This allows us to use our BT40 

tools from the other machines.” 

It is recognised that the BBT40 configuration 

generates more stability, rigidity and enhances 

tool life and performance. So, when McGreevy 

gets more familiar with the new Victor 

installation, the company will notice a marked 

improvement in tool life, surface finishes, 

greater precision levels and productivity. “As 

well as the BBT40 spindle, the overall build 

quality and rigidity of the Victor machine is 

outstanding. We recently delivered a job to a 

customer and they couldn’t believe the surface 

finish. The customer actually said that they often 

polish jobs after machining, but the quality and 

surface finish from jobs produced on our new 

Victor AX800 are outstanding and require no 

polishing. We are expecting to considerable 

grow our aerospace work in the near future 

and we’ll certainly be looking at another 

Victor CNC 5-axis machine”

A catastrophic failure of a 5-axis machining 

centre, coupled with a requirement to 

continue supplying 12 aircraft seat tray table 

assemblies per day that were being produced 

on it, is a nightmarish scenario for a 

subcontractor. It was exactly the problem 

Weymouth-based FGP Systems 

(www.fgpltd.co.uk) faced last autumn. 

A solution was quickly found. It was to 

buy a new, German-built Hermle C 400 

machining centre, which was supplied in 

September 2016 by sole UK agent Geo 

Kingsbury (www.geokingsbury.com) in a 

lead-time of two weeks. After commissioning 

and training, the 5-axis, vertical-spindle 

machine was producing parts within three 

weeks from time of order. Three months 

later, the supplier moved it to a new, 

permanent location in the Weymouth facility 

over a period of just four days prior to 

Christmas. 

Simon Griffiths-Hughes, Director of 

Engineering at FGP Systems said, “No other 

potential source of a quality 5-axis machining 

centre could react so quickly. 14 to 16 weeks 

is a normal lead-time from a factory if a 

machine is built to order, but Geo Kingsbury 

had the Hermle C 400 in stock in its Gosport 

showroom. 

“As luck would have it, the machine was 

perfectly specified for our requirements with 

spindle nose probing, laser tool setting, HSK 

63 tools, an extended, 87-station magazine 

and an 18,000 rpm spindle to allow efficient 

machining of aluminium. 

“Before we placed the order we spoke 

with several UK users of Hermle equipment, 

from blue chip firms to small subcontractors, 

and all endorsed the brand. We were also 

mindful that we did not hear any negative 

comments.” 

Nigel Pitman, Managing Director of FGP 

Systems added, “To change from the 

incumbent supplier of our nine 5-axis 

machining centres to Hermle was a huge 

decision for us. 

“The essential thing a subcontractor 

needs is good service. Geo Kingsbury has 

impressed us so far, in particular with how 

quickly two of its engineers moved the C 400 

in four days to allow us to install other new 

equipment urgently. It would normally take 

twice as long to relocate a 5-axis machining 

centre.”

NCMT wiNs £7 MillioN CoNTraCT 

Bromford Industries a specialist 

manufacturer of aero engine and landing 

gear components for the global aerospace 

supply chain, is in the process of installing 

nine Okuma MU-6300V mill-turn centres in 

its Birmingham factory. The Japanese-built, 

5-axis, vertical-spindle machines are ideally 

suited to volume production of nickel alloy 

aero engine parts to tight tolerances. 

The machine tool order, placed on 

Okuma’s UK agent NCMT is valued at £7 

million. Seven of the machines have already 

been installed and are producing 

components, with the remaining two due for 

delivery in the fourth quarter of 2017. They 

form the major share of a £10 million 

investment at the Birmingham plant that 

includes tooling, automation, metrology 

equipment and CADCAM software. 

Mike Tew, Operations Director at 

Bromford Industries commented, “The 

Okuma VMCs were selected due to their 

perceived quality, which has subsequently 

been demonstrated in production. Our 

aerospace supply programmes are long-term 

and to fulfil them we need machine tools that 

maintain top levels of accuracy for extended 

periods, especially as they are running 24/7. 

“Another factor in favour of the supplier 

was the successful installation a couple of 

years ago of an Okuma Multus B400II 

multifunction turn-mill centre, which has 

proved reliable in operation and has been 

well supported by NCMT.”

THE WORLD’S PREMIER TRADE FAIR FOR THE 

METALWORKING SECTOR 

From 18 to 23 September 2017, international 

manufacturers of production technology will 

be spotlighting “Connecting systems for 

intelligent production” at the EMO 

Hannover 2017. The world’s premier trade 

fair for the metalworking industry will be 

showcasing the entire bandwidth of today’s 

most sophisticated metalworking 

technology, which is the heart of every 

industrial production process. The fair will 

be presenting the latest machines, plus 

efficient technical solutions, productsupportive 

services, sustainability in the 

production process, and much, much more. 

The principal focus of the EMO Hannover is 

on metal-cutting and forming machine tools, 

production systems, high-precision tools, 

automated material flows, computer 

technology, industrial electronics and 

accessories. The trade visitors to the EMO 

come from all major sectors of industry, such 

as machinery and plant manufacturers, the 

automotive industry and its component 

suppliers, the aerospace sector, precision 

mechanics and optics, shipbuilding, medical 

technology, tool and die manufacture, steel 

and lightweight construction. The EMO 

Hannover is the world’s most important 

international meeting point for production 

technology specialists from all over the 

planet. In 2013, the fair attracted more than 

2,130 exhibitors, and around 143,000 trade 

visitors from more than 100 different 

countries. EMO is a registered trademark of 

the European Committee for Cooperation of 

the Machine Tool Industry CECIMO. 

Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier 

will in September be ceremonially opening 

the EMO Hannover 2017. “We are absolutely 

delighted that our head of state will be 

honouring the EMO Hannover with his 

presence, and thus unequivocally affirming 

the high level of perceived importance 

accorded to the nation’s industrial sector,” 

says Carl Martin Welcker, General 

Commissioner of the EMO Hannover, 

commenting on the EMO Preview 2017. 

Following a four-year pause, the world’s 

premier trade fair for the metalworking 

sector will once again be opening its doors in 

Hanover, from 18 to 23 September 2017. With 

its motto of Connecting systems for 

intelligent production, it will be spotlighting 

the issues of digitisation and networking for 

production operations. 

At the beginning of June 2017, more than 

2,050 firms from 45 countries had signed up. 

There are more than 1,400 exhibitors from 

Europe alone. The number of Asian 

participants has increased from 21 to 25 per 

cent. 

“This means the current registration 

status is significantly above the comparable 

figure for the previous event,” explains 

Welcker. There are plenty of indications that 

the EMO Hannover 2017 is heading for a 

record participation level. 

The opening ceremony is scheduled to 

last about an hour on 18 September. Besides 

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Lower Saxony’s 

Prime Minister Stephan Weil and CECIMO’s 

President Luigi Galdabini will also be 

speaking. After this, the President will be 

taking an exhaustive tour of the fair. “We 

shall be demonstrating to the President the 

performative and innovative capabilities of 

our sector, and the range of solutions we 

offer in the environment of digitisation,” 

added Carl Martin Welcker.

MOLLART TO BUILD ON RECENT 

AUTOMOTIVE SUCCESS 

Mollart Engineering is using EMO 2017 to 

further develop into Europe its success in 

North America for deep hole drilling 

applications in the automotive sector by 

installing an Omnisprint LD6-750, 3-axis, 6- 

spindle special purpose gundrilling centre on 

stand B05. 

After the exhibition, the machine will then 

be delivered to its North American customer 

as part of Mollart’s $3 million contract for 

five machines which are currently in the 2017 

build programme. 

Said Sales Director Ian Petitt: 

“Automotive transmission manufacturers 

worldwide and in particular in Europe, are 

trending towards hydraulic automatic multigear 

(9 and10 speed) variants which will 

require major investments in deep hole 

drilling capabilities. As a result we will

produced into the most desirable length of 

chip, problems such as ‘birds-nesting’ is 

overcome and swarf disposal is simplified. 

LFV can be applied to turning, profiling, 

facing, taper and interrupted cutting, drilling 

and even thread cutting. It also contributes 

to obtaining a superior surface finish, 

increased depth-of-cut and reduces the onset 

of built-up edge on tooling enabling 

increased confidence in unmanned running 

strategies and improved machine tool 

utilisation. 

Meanwhile, Citizen Cincom’s integrated 

laser processing technology creates a 

scenario for endless possibilities in enabling 

geometric shapes to be machined as well as 

burr-free precision holes in the walls of solid

exhibit the latest Omnisprint that combines 

well-proven technology with a reputation for 

reliability and maintaining spindle uptime, 

an important factor in our winning the 

American contract against both local and

The Omnisprint knee-type gundrill centre 

on the stand, which also has the capability for 

off-centre line drilling, has a highly flexible 

configuration for build with a drilling 

capacity between 2 mm and 22 mm by 750 

mm hole depth. There are also variants with 

1, 2 and 4 spindles, 500 mm and 1,000 mm 

drilling depths, 4- and 5-axis pallet shuttle 

plus bespoke automation packages. Each 

machine utilises Fanuc 35i control and drives 

packages. 

Mollart will also be promoting its 

subcontract operations at Chessington and 

Resolven in South Wales which specialise in 

multi-axis machining, deep hole drilling, and 

clean room assembly. Meanwhile, the newly 

formed fabrication facility, which also 

produces coolant filtration and swarf 

management systems for the machine tool 

build operation, will be represented at the 

EMO exhibition.

machine will also feature alongside its 

demonstration of LFV and within the same 

cycle, the advantages of the integrated laser

RK International Machine Tools partners will be 

well-represented at the forthcoming EMO 

exhibition in Hanover, Germany (18 – 23 

September), with grinding machines on display

Grinding machine specialist Perfect (Hall 11,

Perfect will also unveil its brand new 

PERFECT PFG-600R a rotary table surface 

grinder designed for the manufacture of 

components such as spacers, rings where 

concentricity is paramount, the machine 

features a 600 mm diameter rotary table with a 

speed between 10 and 120 revs/min. 

Over at Delta (Hall 11, Stand A78) there will 

be a number of machines on display including 

the newly introduced Mini 7 travelling column 

surface grinder, the Rotax 7 fully automatic, 

rotary table, horizontal spindle NC grinding 

machine and the LC400 rotary grinder. The 

Mini 7 machine is the smallest of the threemachine 

Mini range from Delta and features a 

800 x 550 mm maximum grinding area. 

Robbi (Hall 11, Stand A82) will be 

highlighting its large capacity CNC cylindrical 

grinding machine range with the Omicron 3615 

– Industry 4.0 Edition machine, part of its

stand. Machine control is provided by the 

Siemens 840D sl CNC unit, which with its 

Industry 4.0 configuration allows remote 

control and monitoring of the machine possible.

MAZAK TO UNVEIL FULL INDUSTRY

Band saw specialist, Starrett, will be exhibiting 

at EMO Hannover 2017 from September 18 to 

23. The company’s team of technical experts 

will be showcasing Starrett’s range of band saw 

machines at the German trade show, as well as 

demonstrating a variety of saw blades that are 

tailor-made for various metal cutting 

applications. You can find Starrett at stand C08 

in hall 15. 

At this year’s event, Starrett will be 

demonstrating its wide range of band saw 

machines from a 55sqm booth in the centre of 

the sawing and cutting hall. This includes 

machines from the portable S1005 band saw, 

which is a battery operated machine with a 

blade speed of 170 m/min that weighs just 4kg, 

up to the impressive S4230. The latter machine 

is a 475kg semi-automatic, horizontal band saw, 

that features a dynamometric saw tension 

indicator and the blade speed, which can range 

from 20 to 85 m/min, is controlled by a variable 

frequency drive.

Going by recent product introductions, there 

continues to be plenty of new cutting tools 

developments aimed at helping machine 

shops to produce deep holes. This can be 

witnessed at Washingborough-based Destec 

Engineering, for example, which is saving 

time and money by using Titex XD deep-hole 

drills from Walter GB. The drills are being 

deployed to produce a series of 5 to 20mm 

diameter holes (autoclave ports) to depths of 

250mm in a range of materials including 

carbon steel and super alloys. In one case – 

producing holes of 5mm diameter by 240mm 

deep – the solid carbide drills have reduced 

cycle times by 7 hours and increased hole 

quality. 

Introduced two years ago by Destec, a 

manufacturer of high-pressure containment 

equipment and portable machine tools for 

the oil and gas sector, the Titex drills have 

not only cut production times from 30 

minutes per hole down to just five minutes, 

but eliminated the problems formerly 

encountered with frequent tool breakage and 

wander, as well as insufficient swarf 

clearance. 

“Ports are machined to high accuracy for 

metal-to-metal sealing applications and are 

integral features of autoclave hubs used to 

join pipes with drilling heads,” explains 

Destec’s machining supervisor John 

Mullenger. “We produce a wide range of 

hubs, up to 3ft in diameter, and in the past 

would machine the holes – usually 2-5 holes 

per hub – using a pecking sequence with HSS 

drills. However, these drills did not have 

through-coolant capability and were 

constantly letting us down through wander 

and breakages.” 

Using Walter’s Titex XD drills, Destec 

now successfully and consistently generates 

the holes by first producing an initial pilot, 

followed by a hole 12xD deep, then another 

at 50xD. 

It is clear that deep-hole drilling success 

relies on innovation, and there are plenty of 

recent developments attracting the attention 

of production engineers, not just in the oil 

and gas industry, but in sectors such as 

aerospace and automotive. 

For instance, the new Sumitomo Electric 

Hardmetal SMD indexable-insert drill range 

can now produce holes of from 12 to 42.5mm 

diameter at depth-to-diameter ratios of up to 

12:1, facilitating holes up to 300mm deep. In 

addition, the range boasts detachable heads 

that can be selected to suit machine type, 

available power and the material being 

processed, with the latter now seeing 

structural steel and single-layer laminates 

added to the list. Furthermore, this latest 

version, says the company, brings new 

orders of flexibility and tool inventory 

reduction by enabling up to five sizes of drill 

head to be used with a single drill body. 

The complete Multi-Drill SMD 

programme covers the SMDH replaceablehead 

type drill holder, the MTL type drill

head for high-efficiency drilling of general 

steels, and the MEL version for soft steel, 

grey cast iron, exotic metals and low-rigidity 

set-ups, plus the MB for structural steel and 

single-layer laminates. 

Deep-hole series (8xD) and ultra-deep 

hole series (12.1xD) are among those 

available. Other features of the Multi-Drill 

SMD range are reduced tool vibration and 

noise generated under cutting conditions, 

while optimised heat dissipation is achieved 

via precisely positioned through-tool coolant 

holes. A high-rigidity clamping system 

ensures edge security and repeatable hole 

size for the exchangeable drilling heads, 

which are bolted to the body against fixed 

precision-ground radial serrations. 

There are two variants of drill head, one 

with ultra-hard PVD (MTL ACX70) coating 

and another with smooth PVD coating (MEL 

ACX80). 

Elsewhere, Floyd Automatic Tooling has 

released the CrazyDrill SST-Inox from 

Mikron Tool into the UK market. Two drills 

are offered, to suit stainless steel and super 

alloys, for drilling up to 8xD. Trials have 

shown that 100 holes (0.5mm diameter, 8xD 

depth) can be produced in stainless steel in 

13 minutes. Cutting speed was 30m/min, 

with 0.015mm/rev feed. 

Deep-hole drills with very small 

diameters are needed for various 

applications in the automotive industry, such 

as the drilling of fuel injection nozzles, and 

for medical devices. In order to produce 

these delicate parts, Mapal has extended its 

portfolio of deep-hole drills with internal 

cooling to include sizes from 1mm diameter. 

The geometry of the new drills has been 

specially adapted to the small diameters. 

Thanks to the newly designed chip flute and 

special face geometry, very high feeds and 

cutting speeds are possible, says Mapal. 

Furthermore, due to the cooling channels, the 

drills are also suitable for use with minimum 

quantity lubrication (MQL). Despite lengths 

of up to 30xD, the gas/oil mixture is reliably 

transported to the cutting edges. 

Instead of a full coating, the new Mapal 

tools are only coated at the head to make 

them more cost-effective. The drills are 

available in diameters from 1.0 to 2.9mm 

(shank diameter 3mm) for universal drilling 

in steel and cast iron, producing holes 

between 20xD and 30xD. 

A further innovation in this technology 

segment comes from Big Kaiser. Available in 

the UK from ITC, the new Big Kaiser SW 

Smart Damper rough-boring head with a 

built-in anti-vibration mechanism is said to 

take precision hole-making to a new plateau. 

Developed to improve productivity and 

performance, the twin-cutting head makes it 

easy to create deep bores in a range of 

materials. The SW Smart Damper can operate 

at cutting speeds of up to 200m/min in steel, 

at a length of 8xD, without chattering, says 

the company. This is four times faster than 

the 50m/min maximum chatterless cutting 

speed attainable without the SW Smart 

Damper. 

So what of gun-drilling tools? Well, 

among the latest innovations here is the 

Botek Lite-Cut series, which is available in 

the UK from Mollart. Lite-Cut gun drills 

incorporate a conical chipbreaker form and a 

special nose grind that is said to require 30% 

less power and enable higher penetration 

rates, especially in more difficult materials. 

In addition, by creating shorter, more 

compact chip forms, swarf can be easily 

evacuated from the hole using lower 

pressure coolant. 

Lite-Cut gun-drills are available in a 

single-flute brazed tool, Type 110 and solid 

carbide Type 113. Type 110’s brazed solidcarbide 

tip is available in diameters between 

1.85 and 51.2mm, while Type 113 

incorporates a kidney-shaped coolant 

channel with a diameter range of 1.5 to 

12mm.

development from Sumitomo Electric 

Hardmetal targeted at high precision small 

workpiece machining that covers a wide 

range of material types where improved levels 

of surface finish are required. This is achieved 

by embracing a special high precision grind to 

the cutting edge and the incorporation of 

Sumitomo’s Absotech Bronze multi-layer 

coating, which not only helps resist microchipping 

problems but contributes to 

extended levels of consistent production. 

The new turning insert grade combination 

of Absotech Bronze physical deposition 

coating (PVD) and Sumitomo’s latest 

precision ground FYS, a narrow breaker width 

G-class chipbreaker development to aid chip 

control and help to ensure a stable operational 

strategy. 

AC1030U inserts can be used for both 

turning and grooving of smaller inner 

diameter bores on workpieces produced from 

alloy, stainless and heat resistant steels, pure 

iron, mild steels as well as non-ferrous 

materials where chip control is difficult to 

manage. 

The advanced Absotech Bronze 

technology comprises five alternate layers of 

TiAlSiN and AlTiSiN coatings which are 

applied to a special tough carbide substrate 

that has double the fracture resistance of more 

conventional substrates. The coating has 

excellent heat and oxidation resistance with 

high orders of adhesion strength and 

resistance to peeling-off as it has improved 

boundary control between the coating and the 

carbide substrate. 

Inserts are available in triangular negative 

plus GNDS grooving types with cutting 

widths of 1.5, 2 and 3 mm. Positive inserts 

range across 80, 55 and 35 deg diamond, as 

well as square, triangular and trigon types.

One of the UK’s leading providers of light 

engineering components, Stourbridge-based 

Tasman Industries, has acquired two 

automated, pivoting-bow bandsaws from 

Kasto, the most recent of which was 

delivered in December 2016. 

They have transformed the efficiency with 

which the firm cuts bar material in a vast 

array of metal types and sizes into large 

batches of up to several thousands. For 

smaller runs, say 50-off, it relies partly on a 

similar, semi-automatic saw installed earlier 

last year by the same supplier. 

Tasman specialises in supplying shaft 

keys, keysteel, shaft collars, taper and slotted 

pins, precision dowel pins, screws and many 

more products in sizes spanning a few 

square millimetres in cross section up to 125 

mm diameter, 100 mm x 50 mm and 75 mm 

square. Materials range from steels, 

including stainless, through nickel alloys and 

titanium to copper alloys, aluminium bronze, 

phosphor bronze and brass. 

Established in 1988, the company is 

currently owned and managed by equal 

partners John Bairner and Benjamin Stirling. 

The only machining performed at 

Tasman’s warehouse in the West Midlands is 

straight and mitre cutting of 200 tonnes of bar 

material per year. The backbone of this 

function are two KASTOfunctional A 

pivoting-bow, automatic bandsaws and a 

KASTOfunctional U semi-automatic model. 

They are of solid construction with a robust, 

torsion-free welded base, capable of cutting 

material to a maximum of 260 mm round / 

WV-275DS well suited to general 

engineering and fabrication workshops, this 

is a well made, powerful bandsaw and, with 

its generous capacities, one which is able to 

carry out almost any cutting task. The biggest 

saw in the Engineer Series range, it has a 

maximum cutting capacity of 227mm. 

The chassis and bow are made from 

robust cast iron mouldings and incorporate a 

square. Stock can be mitre-cut to the left at up 

to 45 degrees and to the right at up to 60 

degrees. 

John Bairner commented, “We tried 

moving to automatic sawing a few years ago 

with the purchase of a circular saw from 

another manufacturer, but the blade kept 

breaking, the hydraulics leaked and overall it 

was not a good experience. 

“We went back to using a pair of semiautomatic 

bandsaws, of which we still use 

one, but could see the benefits of automation 

for longer runs. 

“So in 2014 we decided to go down the 

automatic bandsaw route and installed the 

first KASTOfunctional A with a roller infeed 

table, having been impressed with a 

demonstration at the company’s Milton 

Keynes showroom.

ESAB welding & cutting (www.esab.com) is 

offering customers with existing ESAB cutting 

machines the opportunity to upgrade and 

benefit from improved productivity, 

performance, reliability and cut quality. 

Thousands of customers throughout Europe 

could gain by upgrading their plasma, laser and 

oxy-fuel cutting systems to use newer 

technologies as some of the older machines 

could have now been operating for 30 years or 

more. Customers with very old machines are 

encouraged to upgrade to improve the machine 

performances, reliability, productivity and 

cutting quality. 

The options available to customers will 

depend on the specification of their existing 

equipment and the level of performance that 

they desire from an upgrade. Typical projects 

encompass a new CNC controller and plasma 

system; other upgrades might include plasma 

or oxy-fuel cutting heads and the laser system. 

In some cases, customers might also replace 

linear bearings and guides as well as servo 

motors and servo drives. 

At the same time, customers often take the 

opportunity to add new dust/fume extraction 

equipment and up-to-date safety-related 

control systems. Frequently, an extra benefit of 

upgrading to new power sources is that the 

machine’s energy-efficiency improves. 

Clearly, the performance improvement will 

be different for each machine depending on the 

existing technology and its replacement; an 

example is an older plasma cutting machine 

being used on stainless steel. By retrofitting the 

iSeries plasma power source, which utilises the 

water mist secondary (WMS) process with 

nitrogen as the plasma gas and tap water for 

shielding, customers benefit from up to three 

times faster cutting, a higher-quality finish that 

needs no post-processing prior to fabrication, 

and higher productivity due to reduced 

downtime for changing consumables. Overall, 

cost per cut can be reduced by up to 20%. 

Customers cutting thin or mediumthickness 

(1-15mm) mild steel can also gain 

substantially from installing a new iSeries 

plasma power source, primarily due to the 

much cleaner cut compared with older plasma 

systems. Another popular option when 

retrofitting cutting systems with new 

technology is the vision t5 touch screen CNC 

system. Its intuitive operating wizard is easy to 

learn so users who are not familiar with 

automated plasma cutting can very quickly 

start earning money with their new equipment. 

The built-in EasyNest facility also helps in 

optimising plate utilisation and the EasSshape 

part program generator makes it 

straightforward to import DXF or DWG 

component drawings for creating cutting paths.

Parker Steel has taken delivery of two heavy-duty Vernet Behringer plate processing machines and 

two high performance Esprit plasma profiling systems.

The Midlands based steel stockholder, 

established in 2001, is currently enjoying a boost 

to business, truly putting their production 

machinery to the test. The growing business is 

now preparing to launch a new online ordering 

service with a view to increasing order process 

efficiency for their national customer base. 

Mark Nicholls, Managing Director for Steel 

Express contributes their success in part to their 

choice of sawing machinery and their fast turnaround 

times, “We started dealing with scrap 

metal from factories and have now grown into a 

trusted steel stockholder operating on a 

national basis and this is, in part, down to the 

Everising bandsaws we use for producing our 

products. They have helped us grow into what 

we are today, and Addison Saws have been 

there to provide a guiding hand and help us 

keep our costs down. We really do work all our 

machines incredibly hard, which is a testament 

to their robustness” and added “If they can 

keep up with our production schedule, they are 

definitely good enough for anyone”. 

Mr Nicholls currently runs 5 Everising 

bandsaws in his Wolverhampton based factory, 

4 of which are H460 HA-NC Twin Pillar 

automatic bandsaws with a cutting capacity of 

460mm and the other, a H560 HA-NC Twin 

Pillar automatic bandsaw with a larger capacity 

of 560mm for larger steel pieces with all 

machines being run all day every day. Their 

original Everising saw, bought 8 years ago, is 

still going strong with Mark commenting, “We 

never have major problems with these 

machines which results in much less downtime 

in general, we’d go back to Addison’s to buy 

Everising every time, they’ll cut the toughest of 

materials which is just what we need”. 

The new online service from Steel Express is 

projected to stimulate their growth by 15% over 

the first year and (Steel Express) are already 

settling on adding a sixth Everising H460 HA- 

NC to their production line to accommodate a 

further increase in demand once new products 

are offered through their website.

BANDSAW BLADE CUTS 

TOUGHEST MATERIALS, 

WITH LONGER BLADE LIFE 

Following stringent testing and field 

trials a major upgrade of the popular 

Bahco 3851PR bandsaw blade has been 

implemented, improving blade 

hardness, toughness and performance. 

This upgrade now offers a wider 

operating envelope within each TPI, 

coupled with more precise tooth form, 

making the new, 3851PRX ideal for 

cutting the toughest materials. 

It is a more universal blade which will 

cut a greater range of work piece sizes 

and shapes than conventional blades. 

“This represents a massive evolution of 

the 3851, with improvement in three key 

areas: raw material, geometry and 

production process,” says Peter Storr, 

Bahco’s bandsaw specialist in the UK. 

Here’s a summary of improvements 

made: 

Raw Material: a new, higher grade of 

HSS Special design wire is now being 

used, improving both the hardness and 

toughness of the blade. 

Geometry: the changes on geometry 

have only affected the variable tooth, 

giving a distinctive new look to the 

3851PRX family, clearly differentiating it 

from the rest of Bahco’s bandsaw 

assortment. The more traditional 

constant tooth (H & HA & R) version 

remains unchanged. 

Production process: the new 3851PRX is 

manufactured on machinery specially 

developed for the upgrade, giving a 

better, consistent finish to the material. It 

also generates less friction and vibration, 

consequently improving fatigue failure. 

Trials and tests: the upgrade has been 

strongly supported by R&D testing and 

field trials, using prototype, standard 

and main competitor blades. 

Field trials were designed to replicate 

real life application while scientific tests 

evaluated how the blades perform when 

used in extreme conditions. In both test 

types the new 3851PRX outperformed 

the old 3851 and its main competitors. 

Product features and benefits: the 

improved blade is now available as a 

complete assortment from 6mm to 

80mm. It offers cutting solutions in both 

Production Cutting and general purpose 

applications. 

Improved chipping resistance is 

achieved without compromising 

hardness, with less vibration and greater 

resistance to heat and wear giving longer 

blade life. 

Applications: Contour cutting, including 

aluminium and stainless steel, along 

with Production Cutting and General 

Purpose applications, cutting solids, 

bundles, even profiles and castings.

Technologies has now introduced its new 

hyperCAD®-S Electrode, an innovative 

module for automating the design and 

production of electrodes for die-sinking. 

hyperCAD®-S is an integrated CAD 

software for hyperMILL® users that is 

specifically tailored to the requirements of 

CAM programmers. The most notable 

addition to Version 2017.2 is a module that 

enables the quick design of die-sinking 

electrodes. Thanks to the module’s 

convenient and automated process, users can 

simply base their electrodes on the face to be 

die-sunk within the component geometry – 

no specialist expertise is required. 

The starting point is given by the faces to 

be die-sunk within the component geometry. 

The NC programmer selects these and the 

CAD software automatically extends the 

electrode faces as needed as well as selecting 

the blank and holder from a library. The 

module is suitable for both solid and face 

models and the geometry can be selected via 

faces as well as contours. Any holes in the 

geometry are filled automatically, and 

hyperCAD®-S also calculates the minimal 

rib distance, the blank’s excess and the C 

angle offset. All the technology data, such as 

spark gap, blank size, positional reference 

and coloured areas are automatically 

transferred to hyperMILL®. 

The electrodes designed in hyperCAD®- 

S are then directly transferred to the CAM 

system for further processing. The user 

simply selects the electrode in question and 

commences programming. A separate dialog 

window is available for this, where the 

milling job for the electrode is specified. Once 

all the details are entered, hyperMILL® 

automatically generates a job list containing 

all the relevant parameters.

milling tasks. 

Delivering high power and precision, BIG 

KAISER's new Hi-Power Milling Chucks 

(HMC) achieve powerful clamping and high 

rigidity for heavy cutting applications. The 

unique slit design means that the new 

HMC12J applies the highest gripping force to 

the cutting tool of any comparable chuck in 

its class. Due to the inherently stronger 

construction of milling chucks, the clamping 

force of these chucks is five to six times 

greater than standard collet chucks. 

The chuck design integrates fine slots and 

hundreds of needle bearings to ensure 

precision high-power clamping performance. 

Despite being designed for heavy cutting, 

this HMC milling chuck maintains an 

accuracy of ten microns at a 4xD runout. This 

remarkable attribute gives the HMC12J the 

additional flexibility to be used on finishing 

applications. 

The slim yet rigid design of this new 

chuck brings the external diameter down to 

an impressive 32mm, the smallest in its class. 

This was achieved whilst maintaining an 

uncompromisingly substantial section of 

10mm to prevent chatter and deliver cutting 

security. The maximum jet-through coolant 

pressure is 70bar.

Predictive maintenance plays a key role in 

Industry 4.0 and the factory of tomorrow. 

Supporting this future, igus has added more 

sensors and monitoring modules to its smart 

plastics family for more intelligence - 

warning of potential failure in good time 

before unplanned and costly downtimes 

occur. 

The new isense EC.RC (e-chain Run 

Control) monitors the operating status of the 

energy chains, especially in guide troughs 

used on long travel applications. Sensors 

measure and check the position of the energy 

chain. In this way, the machine is prevented 

from continuing to operate when mechanical 

faults occur; meaning that total loss of the 

chain or an electrical shutdown are a thing of 

the past. 

Another new product is the EC.M 

module, which is mounted on the moving 

end of the energy chain and automatically 

records its status, i.e. acceleration, speed, 

temperature and completed number of 

double-strokes. The distance travelled and 

the remaining service life of the system can 

be derived from this. 

igus has also improved the CF.Q module, 

with which the data of the intelligent 

chainflex cables are gathered. Due to 

continuous measurement of the electrical 

properties, ambient temperature and the 

number of cycles, potential failure of the 

cable is predicted in good time.

analysis of the measured values increasingly

of 3D printed injection mould tools that 

allows engineers to solve difficult technical 

challenges quickly. The entire range of 50 

iglidur high-performance plastics are 

available using this new process, including 

specialists for high load, food contact, 

underwater or high temperature 

applications. Depending on the iglidur 

material chosen, the mould is either SLA or 

SLS printed and then used immediately in 

the injection-moulding machine. Thus, parts 

are ready for shipment within a few days. 

The material structure of the printed injection 

mould ensures that it can withstand the high 

temperatures during injection moulding, 

which means that one mould can produce 

prototypes and small batches up to 500 

pieces cost-effectively and quickly. 

Optimum use of installation space, light 

weight and high stability – these are just 

some of the benefits of the E4.1L lean energy 

chain from igus. Compared to the E4.1, the 

application-oriented design of the E4.1 L 

could save so much mass that the chain is 

about 30 percent lighter; this brings an 

additional advantage - a considerable 

amount of drive power can be saved, making 

the application more energy efficient. The 

E4.1L can also accommodate more hoses and 

cables in a given space envelope. The E4.1L 

lean energy chain is now available from stock 

in numerous interior heights and widths. As 

for the open energy chain, igus also offers an 

ESD version and even a high-temperature 

option for the enclosed energy tube to protect 

against hot chips and debris.
