SAWING & CUTTING TOOLS eNgiNeeriNg comPoNeNts suPPlier automates sawiNg HigH PrecisioN smaller worKPiece macHiNiNg AC1030U is the latest turning insert development from Sumitomo Electric Hardmetal targeted at high precision small workpiece machining that covers a wide range of material types where improved levels of surface finish are required. This is achieved by embracing a special high precision grind to the cutting edge and the incorporation of Sumitomo’s Absotech Bronze multi-layer coating, which not only helps resist microchipping problems but contributes to extended levels of consistent production. The new turning insert grade combination of Absotech Bronze physical deposition coating (PVD) and Sumitomo’s latest precision ground FYS, a narrow breaker width G-class chipbreaker development to aid chip control and help to ensure a stable operational strategy. AC1030U inserts can be used for both turning and grooving of smaller inner diameter bores on workpieces produced from alloy, stainless and heat resistant steels, pure iron, mild steels as well as non-ferrous materials where chip control is difficult to manage. The advanced Absotech Bronze technology comprises five alternate layers of TiAlSiN and AlTiSiN coatings which are applied to a special tough carbide substrate that has double the fracture resistance of more conventional substrates. The coating has excellent heat and oxidation resistance with high orders of adhesion strength and resistance to peeling-off as it has improved boundary control between the coating and the carbide substrate. Inserts are available in triangular negative plus GNDS grooving types with cutting widths of 1.5, 2 and 3 mm. Positive inserts range across 80, 55 and 35 deg diamond, as well as square, triangular and trigon types. They have transformed the efficiency with which the firm cuts bar material in a vast array of metal types and sizes into large batches of up to several thousands. For smaller runs, say 50-off, it relies partly on a similar, semi-automatic saw installed earlier last year by the same supplier. Tasman specialises in supplying shaft keys, keysteel, shaft collars, taper and slotted pins, precision dowel pins, screws and many more products in sizes spanning a few square millimetres in cross section up to 125 mm diameter, 100 mm x 50 mm and 75 mm square. Materials range from steels, including stainless, through nickel alloys and titanium to copper alloys, aluminium bronze, phosphor bronze and brass. Established in 1988, the company is currently owned and managed by equal partners John Bairner and Benjamin Stirling. The only machining performed at Tasman’s warehouse in the West Midlands is straight and mitre cutting of 200 tonnes of bar material per year. The backbone of this function are two KASTOfunctional A pivoting-bow, automatic bandsaws and a KASTOfunctional U semi-automatic model. They are of solid construction with a robust, torsion-free welded base, capable of cutting material to a maximum of 260 mm round / WV-275DS well suited to general engineering and fabrication workshops, this is a well made, powerful bandsaw and, with its generous capacities, one which is able to carry out almost any cutting task. The biggest saw in the Engineer Series range, it has a maximum cutting capacity of 227mm. The chassis and bow are made from robust cast iron mouldings and incorporate a square. Stock can be mitre-cut to the left at up to 45 degrees and to the right at up to 60 degrees. John Bairner commented, “We tried moving to automatic sawing a few years ago with the purchase of a circular saw from another manufacturer, but the blade kept breaking, the hydraulics leaked and overall it was not a good experience. “We went back to using a pair of semiautomatic bandsaws, of which we still use one, but could see the benefits of automation for longer runs. “So in 2014 we decided to go down the automatic bandsaw route and installed the first KASTOfunctional A with a roller infeed table, having been impressed with a demonstration at the company’s Milton Keynes showroom. tel: +44 (0)1908 571590 fax: +44 (0)1908 566106 email: sales@uk.kasto.com www.kasto.com New metal cuttiNg baNdsaws from axmiNster swivel base to allow mitre cuts up to 60°R and 45°L. The cast iron vice has a clever slide action to allow the mitre cuts to be made easily with the work being closely held near the blade. The vice also has a quick release cam action clamp. UV-180DS Designed for use in smaller manufacturing workshops, this well engineered machine will also suit schools and colleges. It has a swivelling head design which makes it easier to create accurate mitre cuts. Heavily built in cast iron to provide high strength and stability, it includes a floor stand with a built-in coolant system.
