St Mary’s Summer Fete
First of all a ‘HUGE BIG THANK -YOU’
to everyone who helped to set up and
pack away on the day. It was very
much appreciated and helped make
the day go smoothly.
With an outdoor event these days, one
thing you can never plan for is the
weather, but we were blessed with a
lovely sunny summer day with only
one small rain shower while we were
packing up.
The church in the community is what
drives us to arrange this event year on
year and it was so nice to see so
many people from Finedon and further
afield, together with the support of the
stallholders. ‘A BIG THANK- YOU’ to
you all for your support and
generosity.
The atmosphere on the day showed a
real community spirit, and it was so
wonderful so see this, especially with
the current news and events. Seeing
the children and adults alike smiling,
laughing and toe tapping. Even seeing
somebody’s ‘dad dancing’ to the
sounds from the Jazz Band , which
included their special guest Father
Richard .(If any aspiring young
musicians want to have a go, music
sessions are held at Wren School
Wellingborough on Saturday mornings
run by NMPAT contact 01604 637117
or www.nmpat.co.uk
The highlight for me had to be the Pig
Racing. Seeing those little furry pink
pigs racing down the track and hearing
people cheering their pig on just like
the Grand National.
With Finedon’s own version of ‘The
Big Painting Challenge’ (presented by
Fr Richard), the children of Finedon
Schools were given the challenge to
complete a portrait of Fr Richard, who
judged and presented prizes for the
winning entries.
The theme for our FLOWER FESTIVAL this year is
“FOR ALL THE SAINTS . . .”
and it will be held from Friday 15 September to Sunday 17 September.
Over the years many individuals and organisations have given their time and
talents to ensure that the festival is successful and the flower festival
committee are very grateful for all the support they receive.
This year a number of our usual helpers are no longer able to help for various
reasons and we really need new helpers to keep the festival going.
We are looking for help during the weekend with refreshments/stalls/stewards,
etc.
The stewards list will be at the back of the church in August, so please put
your name on the list if you can spare a few minutes to welcome people to the
church.
We also welcome contributions to our raffle, tombola, preserves and cakes.
If you can lend a hand in any way please speak to Christine (01933 398818)
or any member of the committee.
Smiling Is Infectious
Smiling is infectious,
you catch it like the flu,
When someone smiled at me
today,
I started smiling too.
I passed around the corner
and someone saw my grin.
When he smiled I realized
I'd passed it on to him.
I thought about that smile,
then I realized its worth.
A single smile, just like mine
could travel round the earth.
So, if you feel a smile begin,
don't leave it undetected.
Police & Crime
Commissioner
Launches Public
Consultation on
Changes to the
Governance of the Fire
& Rescue Service
The Office of the Northants Police
and Crime Commissioner has
recently launched a public
consultation regarding proposals for
the governance of Northamptonshire
Fire and Rescue Service to transfer
from the Fire Authority which
currently sits in Northamptonshire
County Council, to the Police and
Crime Commissioner, who would
therefore become the Police, Fire
and Crime Commissioner. There is a
short animated film and leaflet to
explain the proposal - both can be
viewed by visiting
www.northantsfireproposals.co.uk
Stephen Mold, Northants Police and
Crime Commissioner said:
“Northamptonshire has led the way in
demonstrating how emergency
service collaboration can help to
increase efficiency and effectiveness,
and I’m determined that we build on
this work to continue to create a safer
county.
“Bringing the Police and the Fire and
Rescue Service under a single
governance model will save
significant amounts of public money
which we will reinvest into increasing
frontline services.
“We will increase funding into the
frontline by sharing premises and
combining administrative functions
and also potentially increasing the
amount we ask the public to pay by
only 3 pence per week.
“The new governance proposal will
enable us to make quicker strategic
decisions and increase our
preventative work across both police
and fire areas while giving the public
a level of transparency when it
comes to spending by the Fire and
Rescue Service that hasn’t been
available under the previous
governance model.
“Having reviewed the business case
for this proposal, I’m confident that a
change in governance is in the best
interests of everyone in
Northamptonshire. However, we
want to hear from as many people as
possible in around county their views
and concerns, to ensure they are
accurately represented as we move
forward”
The Commissioner is really keen to
hear your views and those of your
family and friends on this proposal.
To find out more and complete the
online survey please visit
www.northantsfireproposals.co.uk .
The consultation will run until
Tuesday 1 st August 2017 and is open
to all residents of the county. A postal
survey or if you require it in easy
read please is available by contacting
I n
My D a y
The ramblings of Hubert James
In my day
it was about this time of year that we
looked forward to the August Bank
Holiday. Now this used to be a unique
public holiday being the only one not
linked to a religious event.
Course, things have changed and
looking back it was always a bit odd
to connect a holiday for banks with
Christian values. Course, we had
loads of actual banks in them days.
Banks for everything. Even rivers and
nurses had their own banks.
There were banks on every corner,
with loads of people willing to look
after your ten shilling postal order
from your Gran. Even in Finedon we
had several and the idea of an August
Bank Holiday was dreamed up by two
local tellers- Mr Farrar and Mr Welch
who worked for the Augustus Bank,
owned by the philanthropist Augustus
Sterling.
Most folk will have forgotten about
this small bank on the corner of
Milner Road because it didn’t last
long. It was specifically set up to look
after workers at the Glitter mine.
Now many of you will remember when
miners worked on a narrow seam of
natural occurring glitter deep under
the Pits (of course there were no
actual pits before the mine). Some of
their tunnels still exist, but the glitter
ran out quickly and now if you want
some sparkle you have to rely on the
synthetic version.
The tiny miners were happy, jolly
workers who made up little ditties to
sing to and from work and at the
glitter face. Their most famous song
was the Hi-Lo song about digging
high and low.
They were simple folk who had little
use for money but Augustus Sterling
invested their earnings wisely
ensuring they all had decent
pensions. Farrar and Welch dreamed
up the idea of closing the bank on the
last Monday in August each year and
taking miners and bank clerks on a
day trip to the seaside.
Everyone enjoyed the day out and the
miners taught the clerks the words to
their special song. Mind you when the
clerks sang it, they got the words
wrong and sang Hi-Ho by mistake.
I expect you’ve heard the song Farrar
and Welch wrote about their bank
holiday trips. It was called The Banks
of the Old Hi-Ho.
New Life in Kenya
Founded by Christian dairy
farmers in 1988, Send a Cow
works hand in hand with
Africa’s poorest families. Through a
proven package of training in
farming, gender equality and money
management, we help them see the
riches in their own land. We also
provide livestock and tools, working
alongside families for three years to
help break the cycle of poverty.
In Kakrao, Western Kenya, most
people make a living from
agriculture, but struggle to provide for
their own basic needs.
Unemployment is high and families
experience hunger on a daily basis.
With high HIV rates, many families
are not only struggling to provide for
themselves, but also for the
orphaned relatives and widows they
have taken in. Their situation is
precarious. Frequently, it is women
like Caren who are striving to hold
their family’s fragile existence
together. Caren experiences hunger
on a daily basis as her farm cannot
produce enough to feed her children
and grandchildren. She is faced with
constant feelings of nausea and
gnawing hunger, made worse by the
antiretroviral drugs that she must
take to keep her HIV symptoms in
check.
With your help, and through a new
project we hope to launch this
September, we can help to change
these families’ futures. We can be
God’s hands and feet, offering
people like Caren the opportunity of
a new life and hope. We will show
them how they can make the most of
their land so they have a variety of
healthy vegetables to eat all year
round, and some left over to sell.
They will also receive the medical
assistance they so desperately need.
needs in their first year of this three
year project.
Alternatively your church could
become a Mission Partner,
supporting and following the progress
of this community over the next three
years.
In return for your prayer and
financial gifts we would provide
prayer updates, photos and videos on
a regular basis. If you would like to
hear more about this exciting
opportunity please do contact
You make the difference!
Revd Rachel Hethington and St David’s Community Cafe volunteers
all of those people who give
at all.
Tonne-up!
Inside the north door of our
parish church lies a large blue
box into which local people
anonymously donate food
supplies that are regularly taken
to Towcester Food Bank.
Abthorpe has been contributing
to our local food bank since it first
opened in 2012.
When the February
contributions were weighed our
village had donated a total of
996kg and it was hoped that by
March enough food would have
been given for us to declare
tonne-up. When the March’s
contributions were weighed they
totalled a massive 45.6kg
By Revd Paul McLeod
meaning that we had greatly
exceeded the one thousand
kilograms mark.
Thanks go to all those who help
provide much needed food
supplies for local people in crisis.
Towcester Food Bank reports that
during 2016 it provided three-day
supplies of nutritionally balanced,
non-perishable food for 1225
people. It also states that one-infive
of the United Kingdom’s
population lives below the poverty
line.
