August 2017 Av/Elul 5777
From the Rabbi’s Study
by Jerome P. David, D. D.
It is told of Rabbi Levi Yitschak of Berditchev that he once summoned all of
the Jews of the community to assemble in the town square the next day, at
noon, because he had an announcement of the greatest importance to make.
He ordered that all the merchants were to close their shops, that all the
mothers were to bring their infants, and that everyone, with no exceptions,
was to be there to hear the announcement. The people wondered what the
announcement could be. Was a pogrom imminent, or a new tax? Was the
rabbi going to leave? Or perhaps he was seriously ill? Did he know the time
when the Messiah would come, and was he going to reveal it? At noon, the
entire community was present, with no exceptions, and everyone
waited with baited breath to hear what the rabbi would announce. Precisely
at twelve, the rabbi rose and said: “I, Levi Yitschak, son of Sarah, have
gathered you here today in order to tell you …that there is a God in the world.”

and closed their shops to hear? Had the rabbi convened them only to tell them something that
everyone already assumed? But then, as they thought about it, they began to say to themselves:
“Indeed, what could be more important than to know that there is a God in the world.”

that there is a God in the world.
During these High Holy Days, open up your hearts and your minds and let God in.
Your clergy team, along with Murray Savar, look forward to seeing you and greeting you during

richest happiness.
Professional Letter from Staff, Temple Board Emanuel’s & Group President, Contacts Jessica Manelis
As the summer winds down and everyone is beginning to
think about going back to school, my responsibilities as
president will start to heat up. Given the time of year, I
thought it would be appropriate to take advice from some
of my teacher friends and let you know what you can expect
from me as your president for the next three years and what I
expect from you as my congregants.
You can expect me to be passionate, dedicated and loyal to
Temple Emanuel. You can expect me to work collaboratively
with my board, who are just as passionate, dedicated and loyal.
You can expect that we are always going to make decisions

You can expect me to be enthusiastic about everything I do.
You can expect me to make myself available if you ever have any questions or concerns about
anything “TE.”
You can expect to see me on Fridays at Shabbat evening services. And you can expect to see me
snagging a black and white at the oneg.
You can also expect that you may not see me on Fridays at Shabbat evening services, because I might
have other plans.

can expect that my cell phone will go to voice mail between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m., because I am
making and eating dinner with my family. You can expect me not to read or answer your emails on
shabbat.
And you can expect to not see me on the bimah on Erev Rosh Hashanah, because I have a tradition of
having dinner with my parents and sister, often the only time we are all together during the High Holy
Days.
You can expect me to listen and work hard at helping you get the most out of your TE experience.
And, you can expect me to say “hi” to you if I pass you in the hallway.
I expect you to get involved: join a committee, attend a program, participate in a mitzvah project, or

I expect you to make a new friend. I expect you to bring your existing friends and share the fabulousness.
I expect you to let me know when you have a question or concern about anything “TE.” All that
bottled-up negative energy is bad for your soul.
I expect you to realize my enthusiasm is contagious.
I expect you to remember that my fellow board members and I are volunteers. We have families. We
have friends. We have jobs. We own businesses.
And, I expect you to say “hi” back.
I think if we can all work towards these expectations for the next three years, we are going to get along

Dear Congregant,
This may be the middle of the summer, but it is the beginning of an exciting
new time at Temple Emanuel. Our sanctuary and social hall are being
renovated, promising a beautiful and bright future for our congregational
family. I know that, in addition to making our bimah accessible to all, this will
enhance our worship experiences in so many ways and add to the enjoyment
of our various celebrations.
One of the greatest things that our TE community has to celebrate this year is
the arrival of Rabbi Gidon Isaacs as our new Assistant Rabbi. In addition to his
obvious scholarship and his experience in Jewish education, Rabbi Isaacs is a

enrich our Jewish lives and be a wonderful addition to our community. I look
forward to sharing our sacred work and the bimah with him. Please join me in welcoming him, along
with his wife, Wendy, and their sons, Natan and Yadin.
Celebrate Shabbat at TE
August 4 & 5 | 13 Av 5777 | Parsha Va-et’chanan: Deut 3:23-7:11
Friday, 7:30 pm Shabbat Evening Service-August Birthday Blessing

Moses pleads with God to let him enter the Land of Israel with the people, but God once more refuses
his request. Moses orders the Children of Israel to pay attention and follow the laws given by God in

as cities of refuge. The covenant at Sinai and the Ten Commandments are recalled. Once again, the
people are exhorted to heed God’s commandments. Moses speaks the words of the Sh’ma, the credo of
Judaism, and commands Israel to show their love for Adonai and keep God’s laws and ordinances.
Moses warns the people not to commit idolatry by worshiping the gods of the nations they will conquer
in Israel.
August 11 & 12 | 20 Av 5777 | Parsha Eikev: Deut 7:12-11:25
Friday, 6:00 pm Shabbat Evening Service
Friday, 6:00 pm Tot Shabbat
Friday, 7:30 pm Open House Sha-BBQ

Moses tells the Israelites that if they follow God’s laws, the nations who now dwell across the Jordan
River will not harm them. Moses reminds the people of the virtues of keeping God’s commandments.
He also tells them that they will dispossess those who now live in the Land only because they are
idolatrous, not because the Israelites are uncommonly virtuous. Thereupon, Moses reviews all of the

honey if the people obey God’s commandments and teach them to their children.
August 18 & 19 | 27 Av 5777 | Parsha R’eih: Deut 11:26-16:17
Friday, 7:30 pm Shabbat Evening Service-August Anniversary Blessing

God places both blessing and curse before the Israelites. They are taught that blessing will come
through the observance of God’s laws. Moses’ third discourse includes laws about worship in a central
place; injunctions against idolatry and self-mutilation; dietary rules; and laws about tithes, debt

August 25 & 26 | 4 Elul 5777 | Parsha Shof’tim: Deut 16:18-21:9
Friday, 7:30 pm Shabbat Evening Service

Laws regarding both sacred and secular legislation are addressed. The Israelites are told that in every
dealing they should pursue justice in order to merit the land that God is giving them. The people are
warned to avoid sorcery and witchcraft, the abhorrent practices of their idolatrous neighbors. God tells
them that should an Israelite unintentionally kill another, he may take sanctuary in any of three
designated cities of refuge. Laws to be followed during times of peace and times of war are set forth.

Senior Group Prime Timers Remarks from Marc
6
Mah Tovu

Hashanah in September. We have January 1 and we have July 1. I like to think of

even more NEW things to celebrate. In July, two NEW members joined our TEam.
Rabbi Gidon Isaacs and Yana List will be great additions to an already great staff.
Both will bring NEW ideas and NEW excitement. Our NEW program book was
completed and should already be on your coffee table by the time you are reading
this. Our NEW school year is being planned which will include some NEW
curriculum. In most years, this would have been enough, Dayenu, but this year

under renovation. The ceiling in awaiting NEW ceiling tiles, the walls are awaiting NEW paint and the

been built. The wiring for our NEW sound system has been laid and our NEW lectern has been ordered.
I have no doubt that when you enter our NEW prayer space your response will be similar to Balaam

worship and says:
Mah Tovu-- How fair are your tents, O Jacob, your dwellings, O Israel!
I through Your abundant love, enter your house; I bow down in awe at Your Holy Temple.

Prime Timers
Italian restaurants in South Jersey? Who knew?
Marc Rothstein, Executive Director
Well, really, everyone knew. Neither of the Prime Timers’ next lunch destinations are exotic for this
“L” is for LaScala’s Fire on
Thursday, Aug. 17, in the Promenade, and “M” is for Marcello’s in Evesham on Thursday, Sept. 14.
(That is the second Thursday of the month, instead of the third Thursday, because of Rosh Hashanah.)
As usual, please contact Myra and Barry Gross at 856-863-1302 no later than the day before the lunch
if you are planning to attend. They welcome suggestions for restaurants representing the rest of the
alphabet, as well as suggestions for other Prime Timers events, such as concerts, plays and tours.
The Henry Raich Social Club
August is our month for rest. We hope you are enjoying a pleasant summer, whether traveling, visiting
with family and friends, or just having a lovely staycation.
We have already begun planning our programs for 2017-2018. Be sure to watch for announcements in

We kick off our season on Wednesday, Sept. 13, with a brown-bag lunch featuring Rabbi Gidon Isaacs
as our guest speaker. His topic will be announced later this summer. Please remember to mark your
calendars, and be ready to pack your lunch and join us as summer ends and we begin a new season.
We forgot to list
Murray Sarvar,
our Accompanist, in our 2017-2018
Program Book. Murray is a vital part of
Temple Emanuel and we apologize for
the omission.

Hi everyone,
I am thrilled to join the Temple Emanuel
family this month. I just started in
the congregation, and it already
#feelslikehome. As the new Director of
Youth Engagement, I am excited about

bonding, and fun. We have an amazing
group of young Jewish leaders charged

the planning process with them. I am new to the
community, and as I learn my way around, I would love

expertise.

I grew up in the Greater Philadelphia Jewish community,
attending Perelman Jewish Day School, Robert Saligman
Middle School (now part of Jack M. Barrack Hebrew
Academy) and Akiba Hebrew Academy (now Barrack). After

in education and biology at Swarthmore College in 2014 and

State University in 2016. I worked as a biology teacher before
I decided to make the transition to professional Jewish life.

in school and professionally. In high school, I was the world
news editor and advice columnist for the Hebrew language

were infamous for missing deadlines), and frequently read
Torah and led services. In college, I served on the board of
directors of Hillel for three years, and I loved participating
in Jewish life. I managed the kosher kitchen and baked
challah every Friday. Please join me for baking in the kitchen
at TE. Since college, I have also taught religious school in
Conservative and Reform Jewish congregations.
Outside of work, I spend a lot of time practicing yoga and

to bring that to my position here. My favorite recipes are
cheesecakes, but I take requests. I also love playing with my
cat, Hermione (I love Harry Potter), and spending time with
my family and friends.
Thank you for the warm welcome here at Temple Emanuel.
After a “buzzy” summer at Kamp Kayeetz (the theme was bugs), we are
preparing for another great school year. The teachers have spent the summer
updating the curriculum. We are incorporating more STEAM (science,
technology, engineering, art and mathematics) activities.

garden. We have even more crops this year, and have a lot of plans that
involve our garden harvest. Many of the vegetables were grown from seeds
Megan Karetny for the

We will welcome our students back for a full day on Tuesday, September 5. We are excited
that the High Holy Days are later, because it gives our morot (teachers) the opportunity to incorporate
these special times into their plans. The sweet New Year will be celebrated creative
curriculum style. This learning method allows children to engage through learning centers
that give them hands-on experiences.
The Pre-School at Temple Emanuel
Since utilizing parents as partners is so important to our pre-school, we look forward to Back
to School Night on Monday, September 11. Our teachers will have the opportunity to set the
stage for the year of learning ahead. The quickest way to bring a smile to your face is to visit
our pre-school wing, so stop by soon.
In addition to our building being under construction, we are updating and
making some changes in our Religious School that will create a new energy and
excitement in our program for both students and staff. Here is a synopsis of what
will be happening. If you have any questions, please speak with Dr. Rena.
• Exciting new changes and updated programs for students in grades 7
through 12. Color games, social activities and special events are already
in the works. Information will be forthcoming, but Tuesday nights
promise to be lots of fun.
• We are happy to have Rabbi Gidon Isaacs, and our new Director of
Youth Engagement, Yana List, join our Tuesday evenings.
• A new twist on our fall programming introduces:
o “Sleep in the Sukkah” for 4th & 5th graders, an updated version of Mini Shabbaton
o “Shul at the Pool” for our 6th graders: dinner, services & swimming at Coco Key Water Park
o New Mitzvah Projects for our 7th graders are being scheduled so they can hands-on
see the difference that Tikkun Olam makes on a daily basis
o “Night at the Museum” for 8th graders, a special overnight program at NMAJH in Philly

L’Taken Social
Justice Seminar has had a strong impact on many of our teens, and we strongly encourage
participation at this event.
• New Madrachim Program will be available for our teens this year to facilitate their
involvement in our Religious School
• High Holy Day Enrichment Programs for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur for preschoolers
through 3rd grade. Programming and services for 4th-6th grades as well as a teen service run
by our TEFTY kids. Babysitting will also be available during adult services with prior
registration. Info will be included with ticket information.
• This is Israel’s 70th birthday year, and we are preparing a “Family Lego Project” that will
culminate in a special display for our building. We hope all of our Religious School families
will join in the fun and be a part of this school-wide birthday celebration.
• In addition to all the great changes for our older students, our littlest congregants will also be
seeing some fun changes in programming. Just wait to see what we have coming.
Wishing you joy,
happiness and a love of learning,
Temple Emanuel’s Caring Community
Caring Community provides sustenance, comfort, and support to our Temple Emanuel families.
We are here when you need us, doing mitzvot to improve lives, striving to ease the burdens of
congregants facing challenges, whether momentary or long-term. We deliver chicken soup and meals
to those feeling under the weather. We help with groceries, and assistance during funerals and Shiva,
making calls to those who are ill and visiting home-bound congregants. Our ability to help directly

Temple Emanuel is very dear to my heart so I want to keep this wonderful
tradition of the Caring Community with the same passion and care that went
before me. We should, of course, care for and help one another because
Temple Emanuel is our extended family. Also, I want everyone to know how
special they are to our temple.
If you know somebody in need due to sickness or hospitalization, please let

them.
I invite anyone in our congregation who would like to be part of the Caring
Community team to contact me at kweisman1@verizon.net or call 856-816-
0761. We could always use a helping hand. Lastly, I want to thank Paula
Levine for her outstanding work she did before me.
THE DATING GAME: Rating Your Relationship Health
By Lindsey Katz
We all strive for healthy and happy relationships. However, how many people actually
know what a healthy relationship looks like? It can be tricky. After all, relationships come
in many forms. Nonetheless, there are some factors that are essential for healthy, successful
relationships. These include, but are not limited to, communicating properly and setting
boundaries.
Healthy communication means that all parties are open and honest. A mutual understanding
of each others needs and expectations is fundamental. Some helpful steps for healthy
communication are:
Willingness to Compromise. Although it is perfectly normal to have disagreements while in a

consider each others point of view.
Showing Support. Being there for each other is essential. Expressing reassurance and
encouragement will help build each other up and provide a stable foundation.

healthy relationship. It is best to be open and talk about it. All parties should feel as if they are
heard without judgment.
Mindful Matterz
Respect. Any healthy relationship requires mutual respect. By establishing respect, each

respect each others privacy. A common misconception is that successful relationships require

Establishing boundaries is a good way to keep your relationship healthy and secure. By
setting boundaries together, it becomes possible to better understand the type of relationship
that is desired. Boundaries are not meant to feel like a trap or like “walking on eggshells.”
Creating boundaries is not a sign of secrecy or distrust, but rather one of feeling comfortable
within the relationship.
Boundaries should not limit life outside the relationship. This means it is acceptable to:
• Go out with your friends without your partner.
• Participate in activities and hobbies you like.
• Keep passwords, PINs and other vital information to yourself.
•Respect each others individual likes and needs.
Unhealthy relationships are often based on power and control. In the early stages, it may be
easy to brush off these behaviors as no big deal. However, possessiveness, insults, jealousy,
accusations, yelling, humiliation, pulling hair, pushing or other abusive behaviors are,
at the root, attempts for power and control. Remember that abuse is always a choice and
respect should be required. There is no excuse for abuse of any kind. Signs of an unhealthy
relationship include: abusive language, yelling, threats, physical force, secrets, lies, an

alone and deserve to get help. Please get on touch with Mindful Matterz co-chairs Judith
Feldman, LCSW, at jaf214@comcast.net or David Rubenstein at rubenstein4@verizon.net.
