The F.L.EX.® Learning Program
(Fun Learning Experience)
ensures that they meet high standards
specific to early learning,
development and care.
The F.L.EX.® Learning Program
is grounded in research on
how children learn best: children
experience the deepest, most
genuine learning when they are
having fun. It’s designed to help
build each child’s emotional,
academic, social, creative and
physical skills – including 21st
century skills such as communication,
collaboration, creativity
and critical thinking - to provide
a well-rounded experience and
help each one become schoolready,
career-ready and lifeready.
Twenty-first century skills
also tie in directly with STEAM
learning (science, technology,
engineering, arts and mathematics).
Introducing these subjects
early on helps promote children’s
natural curiosity in them,
increasing the chance that children
will pursue STEAM-related
careers later on in life.
“Supporting STEAM learning
at the preschool level involves
identifying activities children
naturally do for opportunities
to further guide them,” Andrew
Fratini said. “When children
solve puzzles or play with
blocks, they create pathways in
their brains that help with more
advanced STEAM skills later
on.” The preschool and pre-kindergarten
classrooms integrate
this play-based learning philosophy
into their lesson plans.
In the preschool classroom,
children use a variety of interesting,
hands-on learning and reading
materials to make play more
complex and challenging. Their
play also becomes more social
and cooperative as they build
their social skills, make friends
and learn to collaborate.
Children continue their journey
of exploration and discovery
in the pre-kindergarten
classroom. Teachers help them
apply their developing literacy
and math skills through fun, purposeful
learning experiences.
relationships are nourished
and fostered throughout
Jewish and secular general
studies. The fullness
of Jewish life and learning
are embraced, and Jews
from across the denominational
spectrum are welcomed.
Teachers at Rochelle
Zell come to know their
students as multi-dimensional
human beings. The
close and meaningful relationships
that form between
them contribute to
students’ confidence in
their ability to advocate for
in college and beyond.
ACT scores; leaving them
options for college that are
only limited by which scholarships
Countryside Montessori School: A place not only to learn but to grow up
Countryside Montessori
School is unique among the
many independent schools
on the North Shore and has
carved out a niche market
for families who are looking
for an educational experience
that focuses both on academic
rigor, but also on the development
of social-emotional
learning that is the foundation
necessary for the development
of good character.
In fact, Countryside’s faculty
can often be heard saying,
“We are committed to
more than great students – we
are committed to exceptional
adults.”
Countryside is able to
achieve this goal by creating
classrooms that emulate real
life, giving its students the opportunities
to make independent
choices, learn from mistakes
and failures, share the
responsibility of class management
with the teachers,
and be peer mentors, teachers
and mediators. Whether that
means helping a friend in the
toddler class put her socks on
after gym or design a microbusiness
to run in the Middle
School.
Parents of CMS have reported
that after their children
have started at CMS, “They
are eager and excited to learn.
They have developed greater
self-confidence. School has
become a joy for them! In
addition, much progress has
been made in developing respect,
responsibility, and resourcefulness
in our children;
all qualities that will serve
them well throughout their
lives.”
Countryside is more than
a school for students. It is
also a school for parents who
want to consider carefully the
choices they are making in
their daily lives that will impact
the development of the
children’s character and be a
part of a community with a
shared vision for how to accomplish
the goal of raising
young adults who are ready to
take their place in the world
when they are 18 years old.
Countryside just celebrated
its 50th year serving the
North Shore community. Students
can begin as early as 16
months and continue all the
way through eighth grade. The
school has a remarkable dedicated
faculty with very little
turnover, many of whom have
been at the school for more
than fifteen years. The teachers
in the school say that they
always have their minds on the
adults each of their students
will become and what decisions
will best prepare them
for their independent futures.
CMS holds monthly information
sessions. Families can
sign up on their website or
call the school for a tour. They
also have an extensive portion
of their website dedicated
to interviews with graduates,
parents of graduates, and objective
data on how the students
perform academically
during their time at CMS and
after they graduate (see Outcomes
in the menu bar). The
next Parent Information Sessions
Math Makes Sense!
At Mathnasium, we believe that every child has the ability to
be successful in math—it’s a matter of teaching the way that
makes sense to them. When math makes sense, kids excel—
whether they’re far behind or eager to get ahead.
For more than a decade, the Mathnasium Method has
transformed the way kids in grades 2–12 understand and
appreciate math. We build math knowledge upon what they
already know—this helps kids learn quickly and boosts their
confidence right away. When math makes sense, grades
improve, excitement grows, and doors open!
2017 WINNER
Mathnasium allows children of
all ages to learn vital math skills
The Math Learning Centers offers a fun
and effective after-school math learning
environment for children in grades 2-12.
Mathnasium operates on the core belief
that virtually any child can become great
at math. The Mathnasium Method,
implemented at more than 700 Mathnasium
centers in the U.S. and abroad, is a
unique program that provides each child
with a customized learning plan and personalized
instruction in a way that ‘makes
sense to them.’ In 2013 alone, Mathnasium
centers taught more than 1.5 million
student sessions. This underscores the
critical role after-school math education
has come to play for students and parents
alike and the value of the Mathnasium
Method, which combines mental, verbal,
visual, tactile, and written techniques
and focuses on helping kids truly understand
math.
“At Mathnasium, we focus solely on
math, so we know how to teach it in a way
that really connects with kids. Mathnasium
centers across the country have helped
struggling students develop into ‘A’ students
and ‘A’ students go on to even greater
achievements. Children at Mathnasium
quickly learn that math can be fun and interesting
as well as extraordinarily useful,
both in terms of succeeding in school and
for the valuable life skills it provides.”
For students, the Mathnasium experience
begins with a highly detailed assessment
of each child’s strengths and
weaknesses, which is then used to create
a customized learning plan. Personalized
instruction from Mathnasium’s highly
trained and caring instructors assures that
each student fully understands key concepts
before moving on to the next. “The
greatest part of Mathnasium is that we
can individually tailor our curriculum to
the student’s needs – from the struggling
student to the gifted wanting enrichment.”
“The teaching of math is rapidly changing
these days. Common Core standards
are impacting how all students are taught
(particularly impacting gifted students).
In addition, the expansion of technology,
such as graphing calculators, is evolving
topics reserved in the past for college to
be taught in high school. Math is the US
in a ‘mile-wide but an inch-deep.’ A lot
of ground is covered but not with great
depth.”
St. Norbert School celebrates
100 years of Catholic education
Since 1917, St. Norbert
School has honored its
mission of serving God
through Learning, Faith
and Service. Academics
are our focus.
For providing meaningful
each child reach his or her
full potential. State of the
art technology is used in
every classroom to make
lessons dynamic and provide
resources beyond traditional
textbooks.
While academics are the
focus of the school, faith
is the heart. Catholic values
are integrated into the
school day so our students
aren’t just learning their
faith; they’re living it.
The school provides
opportunities outside the
classroom that help our students
grow as much as they
do inside the classroom.
Six competitive athletic
teams ensure our students
learn the importance of
teamwork and the value of
good sportsmanship. Our
academic teams consistently
shine in Quiz Bowl,
of experiences from
performances and private
instruction, she developed
her life motto, “Passion
for music. Compassion
for people.” This motto is
the attitude that she carries
into Intelligent Fingers every
day and it is what is
expected and encouraged
from the rest of the faculty.
The school has a faculty
of instructors hailing from
schools including Northwestern
University, the
Juilliard School, San Francisco
Conservatory of Music,
Rhode Island School
of Design, and the Art Institute
of Chicago. Though
eclectic and diverse, one
commonality shared between
all instructors is a
passion for both the creative
arts and education.
Instruction takes place in
a facility that is equipped
with quality instruments
and equipment. Intelligent
Fingers is affiliated with
Steinway & Sons and all
music rooms are stocked
with at least one Steinway
piano. The school offers
unique music instruction
for a variety of band and
orchestra instruments and
art instruction for painting
and illustration, writing,
ceramics, and origami.
Each class has an
intentional design that
promotes academic success
and personal growth.
For example, group piano
classes are offered in a
classroom setting of four
students who are equipped
with their own acoustic
piano. Through group instruction,
students not only
develop their musicality,
but they also boost their
performance confidence
as they practice amongst
a smaller audience comprised
of peers.
Instruction runs by semesters
that consists of 15
weeks each. Aside from
registering for weekly
one-on-one instruction,
students may supplement
their learning by registering
for group classes and
workshops. The group
classes are intentionally
kept at a smaller size in order
to ensure that each student
receives the adequate
amount of attention to develop
skills as well as build
a mentorship relationship
with the instructor.
Intelligent Fingers welcomes
people of all ages
and experience to join
as students. Overall, the
school supports the success
of each student’s creative
journey because it believes
that unlocking and
fostering an individual’s
creativity has the potential
to cause positive change in
the community. Intelligent
Fingers is a creative movement
that is working towards
becoming a hub for
artists to collaborate and
make beautiful impacts on
the community. The goal
is not to produce adequate
artists, but to nurture individuals
who would be
inspired to become outstanding
leaders and contributors
to their circles of
influence.
Youth Choral Theater accepting
new members for all ensembles
Youth Choral Theater of Chicago
(YCT) is a youth choir that
has its roots in the North Shore
of Chicago for over 30 years.
YCT is focused on bringing topnotch
musical training to all students
seeking musical education,
no matter their economic background.
Since our beginning, we
have done just that.
YCT stands out from other
youth choirs through our training
process that is deeply rooted
in music education. Through
our four different ensembles,
involving students ages 3-18,
we train students in a continuous
way that helps them move
through our ensembles with ease
while developing their musical
skills. We accept students going
through a voice change, which
not all youth choirs in the area
do, because we believe that a
well rounded choir includes all
voice types.
Another thing that sets the
Youth Choral Theater apart is
our adventurous musical selections.
Through commissions and
collaborations with local composers,
The Youth Choral Theater
performs pieces that are not
only challenging to sing, but also
expand the musical horizons of
our singers. Last year, all YCT
ensembles sang songs in Korean,
Polynesian, Swahili, and
Spanish. Our music addressed
issues of discrimination, pride,
courage, fear, love, hope, and
exploration. We believe that it
is not only important to push
our students musically, but also
emotionally, helping them to
develop feelings and emotions
behind what they are singing and
enrich their lives.
The Youth Choral Theater
season schedule works hard to
eliminate conflicts with school
schedules in the area. Classes begin
in early September and ends
in May with breaks throughout,
including Thanksgiving Break,
December Holiday Break, and
Spring Break. Throughout the
season, Youth Choral Theater
ensembles have 5-6 concerts.
Four of these concerts include all
Youth Choral Theater ensembles
while the remaining concerts are
“professional concerts,” for our
older students.
The Youth Choral Theater
has four ensembles for students,
each with its own age range, rehearsal,
and concert schedule.
Winnetka Children’s Chorusis
comprised of students grades
PreK-3yo through 1st grade.
This group rehearses on 4:30-
5:30 p.m. Mondays at the Winnetka
Covenant Church. Concertinais
comprised of students
grades 2-3 and rehearses from
5:30-6:30 p.m. on Mondays at
the Winnetka Covenant Church.
The Winnetka Covenant Church
is located at 1200 Hibbard Rd.,
Wilmette, IL 60091. These two
ensembles perform in the four
season concerts that all Youth
Choral Theater ensembles are
included in.
Treble Ensemble is comprised
of students grades 4-6 and rehearses
from 3-4 p.m. on Sundays
at Trinity United Methodist
Church. Chamber Choraleis
comprised of students grades 7-12
and rehearses from 4-6 p.m. on
Sundays at Trinity United Methodist
Church (TUMC). TUMC
is located at 1024 Lake St, Wilmette,
IL 60091. These two ensembles
perform on all concerts
throughout the YCT season.
All of our ensembles are accepting
new members, and we
want YOU to join us! Auditions
for new members are at Trinity
United Methodist Church
from 3-5 p.m. on August 27th,
Woodlands Academy prepares women for STEM careers
Young women are losing
ground in the STEM
fields. At the bachelor’s
degree level, between
2004 and 2014, the share
of STEM-related bachelor’s
degrees earned by
women decreased in all
seven discipline areas: engineering;
computer science;
earth, atmospheric
and ocean sciences; physical
sciences; mathematics;
biological and agricultural
sciences; and social sciences
and psychology.
Graduates of girls’
schools, however, are faring
much better than their
peers from coeducational
institutions. Girls’ school
graduates are three times
more likely to consider
majoring in engineering
and six times more likely
to consider majoring in
math, science and technology.
“Not only do our graduates
go on to pursue degrees
in the STEM fields,”
says Head of School Meg
Steele, “but they go on to
become leaders. We are
immensely proud that our
graduates are blazing trails
in traditionally male-dominated
fields.”
Woodlands Academy of
the Sacred Heart is Lake
County’s only singlegender
school. Located
in Lake Forest, the 159
year-old school is an independent,
Catholic day
and boarding, college-preparatory
school for young
women of all faiths grades
nine through 12. It’s challenging
academic program
and extracurricular offerings
prepare students to
pursue degrees in STEM
fields. For example, the
Woodlands Academy
Robotics team advanced
to the FTC Illinois State
Championship in 2017.
Additionally, Woodlands
Academy students earned
an average score of 4.5
on the A.P. Calculus exam
compared to a 2.9 national
average in 2016.
Woodlands Academy
students also show academic
strength across all
disciplines evidenced by
the fact that nearly one-inthree
Woodlands Academy
of the Sacred Heart Class
of 2017 were honored by
the Illinois Student Assistance
Commission (ISAC)
State Scholars. Honorees
were chosen based on a
combination of exemplary
ACT or SAT test scores
and sixth-semester class
rank. They typically rank
in or near the top 10 percent
of high school seniors
from 765 high schools
across the state.
Founded in 1858, Woodlands
Academy is an independent
Catholic college
preparatory day and
boarding high school for
young women. It’s part of
a worldwide network of
Sacred Heart Schools that
spans the United States and
40 other countries. A nonprofit,
Woodlands Academy’s
identity is rooted in
Saint Madeleine Sophie
Barat’s desire to inspire
young hearts and minds to
excel, to lead lives of integrity
and to serve.
Kindergarten Ready? At Wilmette Child Development Center, 100%.
The scores are in – 100 percent of the
children who graduated from preschool at
One Hope United Wilmette Child Development
Center last month demonstrated
kindergarten readiness, according to the
Teaching Strategies GOLD assessment
tool.
One Hope United’s child development
centers specialize in supporting and partnering
with working families to prepare
their children for lifelong learning and
success, starting in our infant program. By
achieving kindergarten readiness, these
children are meeting an important milestone
early in their academic lives – and
are poised to stay on track: studies show
that children who attend Pre-K are more
likely to graduate from high school, and
those who attend a center-based program,
like One Hope United’s, score significantly
higher on reading and math tests than
their at-home counterparts.
Here’s a look behind the numbers at
what makes One Hope United a nurturing
environment for children and families’
education and growth:
Individualized, Center-Based Learning:
One Hope United employs the Creative
Curriculum, which is built around classroom
“centers” such as Science, Writing,
Literacy/Reading, and Dramatic Play.
Children self-navigate through the centers
and learn through play and social interaction.
Teachers encourage and customize
each child’s education based on their individual
strengths and temperament, and
adjust it based on observations and formal
assessments.
Exclusive “Healthy Lifestyles” Curriculum:
One Hope United’s self-developed
Healthy Lifestyles curriculum promotes
lifelong wellness by incorporating
daily movement and teaching children to
make healthy food choices and maintain
good habits such as brushing teeth, visiting
the dentist, and screening for hearing
and vision. The Wilmette center also
hosts movement classes, which encourage
physical fitness, creative expression, and
relaxation.
Parent, Family, and Community Engagement:
Parent involvement in their
child’s learning has been linked to higher
student achievement. The Wilmette center
provides opportunities for family involvement
in daily routines as well as at special
events. Parents are welcome to visit the
program and often stop by to share their
talents and family culture. The center also
helps kids and families engage with the
surrounding community through partnerships
with Avoca School District, Glenview
Park District, and Wilmette Public
Library.
Accredited Quality at Every Level: The
Wilmette center is one of only 6 percent
of U.S. centers to be accredited by the
National Association for the Education of
Young Children (NAEYC). This accreditation
looks at 10 standards and criteria
across four categories – Children, Teaching
Staff, Partnerships with families and
communities, and Administration – to
provide a holistic measure of a program’s
quality.
Parents can expect all of these features
to be enhanced when the Wilmette center
relocates to a newly updated facility, in
winter 2018. Located near I-94, between
Glenview and Old Orchard Roads, the
new center will feature brand new classrooms,
nontoxic materials including carpeting
and paint, and a dedicated gym
designed specifically for early childhood
gross motor activities. Families who enroll
children now at the current location
are guaranteed a space in the new child
development center.
Families who live or work nearby may
also consider One Hope United’s Des
Plaines (9375 Church St., Des Plaines)
and O’Hare (2300 E Devon Ave, Suite
171, Des Plaines) centers, both of which
are also NAEYC accredited. For more
The Gow School approach allows its students to thrive
The Gow School is a collegeprep
boarding and day school for
students, grades 6-12, with dyslexia
and similar language-based
learning disabilities. Focusing
on small class sizes, 3-7 students
per class, and a low 4:1 student
to faculty ratio, The Gow School
offers a multi-sensory approach
to teaching that enables dyslexic
students to thrive. The Gow
community has a sense of belonging,
of equality, and of connection
born on common trials
and shared triumph.
Gow has a start fast, finish
strong mentality and students
typically start to see progress
soon after they step foot in our
classrooms. Progress typically
comes quickly, soon after they
invest themselves in the program.
At the School’s core is a
structured program designed to
help students navigate the academic
day and a daily schedule
designed to keep students busy.
Between a packed class schedule,
after-school sports, study
hall and Saturday classes, there
is little unprogrammed time.
The School is settled on a 120
acre campus which gives our students
plenty of room to learn and
play. Boarding school life does
not always allow lots of free
time, but it has plenty of room
for fun. Students are so involved
– playing sports, going on trips,
and hanging out with each other
– that they get the most out of the
rich residential experience.
In July, the School’s co-ed
summer program is five weeks of
learning and fun for ages 8-16!
The Gow School Summer Program
is for students who have
been experiencing academic difficulties,
or have been diagnosed
with dyslexia or specific learning
disabilities. The Summer Program
runs from the end of June
to early August with morning
academics, afternoon fun and
games and weekend adventures!
The Gow School Summer Program
gives students academic
tools and self-confidence they
can take with them wherever
they go; to the classroom and
beyond.
By combining a structured
program and environment with
flexibility, individualization,
and room for fun, Gow provides
a rich school experience that is
precisely what dyslexic students
need to learn and to enjoy learning.
Lake Forest Academy launches Global Concentrations Program
Lake Forest Academy’s Strategic
Plan sets forth a promise to
“develop global citizens through
unique educational experiences
within a diverse and caring community.”
While LFA faculty
bring the world into the classroom
and take their classes out
into the world, the Plan challenges
them to do still more. LFA’s
Global Concentration Program
answers that call to action.
The program launches this fall
with an inaugural cohort of 11
students, all rising juniors. What
distinguishes LFA’s program
from global certificate programs
at other schools, says Associate
Dean of Academic Affairs and
Director of Curriculum Kristine
Von Ogden, is team focus. “Students
work in a cohort; communication
and collaboration
are key. In many other schools,
the students have a list to check
off—a course to take, a trip to be
part of, service to complete—
and they complete the program
individually. This is a two-year
program. Students make a commitment,
work together, and develop
an individualized program
for themselves, all the while
working with a group of peers.”
The overarching goal? To help
students understand that not only
can they make a difference, but
how to make a difference in their
lives and the lives of others. In
short, how to implement their
researched ideas and solutions.
Ms. Von Ogden notes that she
and the students are looking forward
to “learning how to make
a difference, how to become and
stay personally invested, how
to follow through with something,
how to get to the root of
a problem or issue, and work on
solving it sustainably from the
ground up.”
Intended as a two-year program,
the Global Concentration
Program should reach its capacity
of 20-30 students—all juniors
and seniors—in 2018-19. Ultimately,
program alumni will stay
involved post-graduation and
will mentor current students. A
new academic department will be
added to oversee the curriculum.
According to Ms. Von Ogden,
there will be required reflection
(journals, vlogs, etc.). Students
will have coursework, including
readings and film viewings.
At times, they will present what
they’ve learned to the wider student
body. “Their assessments
will involve interaction, reflection,
and be hands-on.”
Technology will be key. “For
research, for live and asynchronous
interaction with global
communities, as a platform for
reflection—the possibilities [for
technology] are endless,” Ms.
Von Ogden explains. “Much of
this will become student-driven,
so I am excited to see what they
will develop.”
Head of School Dr. John Strudwick
adds that a quality education
involves “looking outward
from oneself and the known to
examine, explore, and experience
people, places, and events
from afar and the unknown. A
key to our success is to ensure
that education is relevant to everyone
and what is occurring in
the world. Relevance and inclusion
are essential concepts in
developing an educational program;
they are pivotal elements
at LFA.”
Northridge Prep builds young men
Unique in the Chicago
area, Northridge Prep is
an independent all-boys
Middle and High School
that teaches the Catholic
faith. At open house,
come discover what makes
Northridge the Chicago
area’s premier school of
character.
A unique all-boys experience
Boys flourish in the
environment Northridge
creates. Northridge is all
male, small enough so faculty
know each boy well,
and uses an approach that
appreciates boys’ natural
enthusiasm. By allowing
and properly channeling
boys’ passion, energy, and
love of play, Northridge
helps boys grow into men
of real strength and refinement.
Boys are free and
encouraged to participate
actively in class, make
great friends, and take
leadership roles without
fear of what others think.
From the classroom, to the
basketball court, to Entrepreneurship
Club, Northridge
students stand out
for their combination of
academic performance and
leadership.
A modern liberal arts
education
The demanding liberal
arts curriculum at Northridge
inspires students
through timeless works
of the western tradition.
These sources challenge
students and develop their
understanding of the true,
the good, and the beautiful.
The curriculum produces
students with clear
thinking and strong writing.
Math and Science are
part of the liberal arts, and
Northridge offers a full
suite of AP and Honors
classes. Since 2012 nearly
70 percent of all Northridge
students scored a 3
or better on their AP exams.
Mentorship
Northridge’s faculty are
not only great teachers,
but are also role models
whose example inspire our
students. In Northridge’s
unique Advisory Program,
each student receives a
long-term faculty mentor,
and they meet monthly and
discuss study habits, character
development, and
academic choices.
Growth and faith
If interested, students
can take courses on the
Catholic Faith appropriate
for each grade level. Daily
Mass, the sacrament of
Confession, and spiritual
guidance from a full-time
chaplain are all available
each day.
Community and
partnership with parents
Northridge exists to
support parents - the primary
educators of their
sons - in their vocation as
parents. Northridge lives
that partnership in several
ways. Firstly, through a
relationship with the student’s
advisor - who meets
annually with parents to
discuss insights about their
son. Secondly, through
workshops that discuss
how to raise young men.
Thirdly, through consistent
communication from
faculty - who proactively
correspond with parents
about both the challenges
and successes they see at
school.
Beyond the classroom
Northridge athletes compete
in the following varsity
sports: soccer, golf, cross
country, basketball, baseball,
and track and field.
Additionally, Northridge
offers club tennis and sponsors
students in swimming.
Northridge also has vibrant
music and theater programs
with an a capella choir,
High School and Middle
school jazz bands, a string
quartet, and two yearly theater
productions. In total
Northridge features over 25
clubs including robotics,
computer coding, debate,
and photography.
development and training for all
At the North Shore School of
Dance we foster the passion for
dance in a positive and nurturing
environment. It is our belief that
everyone should have the opportunity
individually. Here students
can feel safe and be themselves,
allowing them to reach their fullest
potential.
NSSD has an unparalleled
reputation for providing the finest
teachers on the North Shore
for 28 years, and “continues the
lineage of high integrity and
professionalism that spans over
45 years.” We provide the highest
caliber of instruction by renowned
faculty members who
are dedicated to inspiring and
educating each dancer.
With over 120 classes per
week, there are all levels of
training for preschool through
adults. These classes are offered
in both traditional and contemporary
styles of dance. We offer
ballet, pointe, modern and
contemporary, jazz, tap, lyrical,
hip-hop, pre-dance, boys and
adult classes. In addition, we offer
a full summer of camps and
programs, master classes, and
workshops.
In our Student Division for 1st
grade through teens, NSSD provides
skill development and performance
opportunities at for the
dancer. Each dancer
is guided by our experienced and
knowledgeable faculty and directors
to create a proper schedule
of classes and planning for
the future near and far. Dancers
gain technical ability and performance
experience, which promotes
a higher self-esteem and
confidence within themselves.
For ages 2.5–6, our Pre-Dance
Division classes incorporate
movement, dance steps, and
creative expression in a fun and
caring atmosphere. Fantasy and
imagery is often their inspiration
to improve and practice what
they have learned. Their own
themed Pre-Dance Showcase is
a very exciting time of year. Our
youngest dancers perform with
our North Shore Ballet Theatre
for a presentation of “The Little
Mermaid,” “Alice in Wonderland,”
and other wonderfully entertaining
stories.
Our non-competitive concert
dance performance opportunities
meet professional standards
of artistic development, performance
values and production
qualities. Since 1989, the North
Shore School of Dance has presented
an annual production of
The Nutcracker and entertained
young children with the popular
Sugar Plum Tea Party. In addition,
the North Shore Dance
Company, North Shore Repertory
Dance Ensemble, and North
Shore Ballet Theatre are wonderful
opportunities for the dancers
to grow with.
North Shore School of Dance
outstanding dancers from
our communities. Generations
of families have danced with or
trained at NSSD, and now many
of our alumnae bring their children.
NSSD is not only a dance
school, but is also known as a
Ronald Knox
Montessori educates
the innovators
of tomorrow
What makes a school “Montessori,”
and what makes Ronald Knox a spectacular
example? While the founders of
Amazon, Wikipedia, and Google didn’t
graduate from Ronald Knox, they did
attend Montessori schools, and they
credit that education with their ability to
think outside the box and develop new
ideas and solutions.
Authentic Montessori classrooms
have a few key components:
Mixed age classrooms – at Ronald
Knox, the Primary Program serves children
ages 3-6 in the same environment,
enabling younger children to learn from
older children and providing older children
with the opportunity to be leaders
and mentors.
Student choice – students have free
choice, within limits, to select what they
want to work on that day, furthering the
development of executive functioning.
Constructivist learning – students
learn through hands-on discovery and
direct contact with materials in the
classroom, creating concrete impressions
that will prepare them for reading,
writing, and complex math work.
Specialized learning materials – all
materials in the classroom were developed
by Maria Montessori to enable
children to learn math, language, science,
and geography in a natural, intuitive,
and hands-on way.
A trained Montessori directress
(teacher) – the directresses at Ronald
Knox have received extensive training
in the Montessori method, are certified
through the American Montessori
Society, and continue their education
through professional development activities
each year.
Ronald Knox Montessori School is
accredited by the American Montessori
Society, signifying a process of rigorous
study to ensure that the school is operating
at the highest caliber. Many schools
can claim to be Montessori – very few
are accredited. And with over 50 years
of experience educating children on the
North Shore, Ronald Knox has proven
that the Montessori method instills a
love of scholarship into its students.
The school educates children from 6
months through 6 years old. Programs
start with the Parent/Child class, where
young children begin independent exploration
and parents learn child development
from a Montessori perspective.
Starting at age 2, children in the Toddler
Program gain independence and confidence
as they learn how to take care
of themselves and their environment.
The Primary Program serves children
from 3-6 years old and is a three-year
program that teaches not only academics
but also social-emotional skills and
problem solving. The final year of the
program culminates with the option for
Full Day Kindergarten, immersing children
in an environment suited to their
development for the entire day.
Are you interested in helping your
child develop the confidence to innovate?
Ronald Knox’s collaborative environment,
multi-age setting, and selfdirected
learning encourage students to
follow their curiosity wherever it may
lead. Still have questions? Contact Ronald
Knox for a tour of the school to see
how Montessori works in action.
