It is our belief that everyone should have the opportunity to dance and be recognized individually. Here students can feel safe and be themselves, allowing them to reach their fullest potential. NSSD has an unparalleled reputation for providing the finest teachers on the North Shore for 28 years, and “continues the lineage of high integrity and professionalism that spans over 45 years.” We provide the highest caliber of instruction by renowned faculty members who are dedicated to inspiring and educating each dancer. With over 120 classes per week, there are all levels of training for preschool through adults. These classes are offered in both traditional and contemporary styles of dance. We offer ballet, pointe, modern and contemporary, jazz, tap, lyrical, hip-hop, pre-dance, boys and adult classes. In addition, we offer a full summer of camps and programs, master classes, and workshops. In our Student Division for 1st grade through teens, NSSD provides skill development and performance opportunities at for the dedicated, recreational, or preprofessional dancer. Each dancer is guided by our experienced and knowledgeable faculty and directors to create a proper schedule of classes and planning for the future near and far. Dancers gain technical ability and performance experience, which promotes a higher self-esteem and confidence within themselves. For ages 2.5–6, our Pre-Dance Division classes incorporate movement, dance steps, and creative expression in a fun and caring atmosphere. Fantasy and imagery is often their inspiration to improve and practice what they have learned. Their own themed Pre-Dance Showcase is a very exciting time of year. Our youngest dancers perform with our North Shore Ballet Theatre for a presentation of “The Little Mermaid,” “Alice in Wonderland,” and other wonderfully entertaining stories. Our non-competitive concert dance performance opportunities meet professional standards of artistic development, performance values and production qualities. Since 1989, the North Shore School of Dance has presented an annual production of The Nutcracker and entertained young children with the popular Sugar Plum Tea Party. In addition, the North Shore Dance Company, North Shore Repertory Dance Ensemble, and North Shore Ballet Theatre are wonderful opportunities for the dancers to grow with. North Shore School of Dance is known for excellent traditional and contemporary training, and has continued the legacy of training outstanding dancers from our communities. Generations of families have danced with or trained at NSSD, and now many of our alumnae bring their children. NSSD is not only a dance school, but is also known as a home-away-from-home. While the founders of Amazon, Wikipedia, and Google didn’t graduate from Ronald Knox, they did attend Montessori schools, and they credit that education with their ability to think outside the box and develop new ideas and solutions. Authentic Montessori classrooms have a few key components: Mixed age classrooms – at Ronald Knox, the Primary Program serves children ages 3-6 in the same environment, enabling younger children to learn from older children and providing older children with the opportunity to be leaders and mentors. Student choice – students have free choice, within limits, to select what they want to work on that day, furthering the development of executive functioning. Constructivist learning – students learn through hands-on discovery and direct contact with materials in the classroom, creating concrete impressions that will prepare them for reading, writing, and complex math work. Specialized learning materials – all materials in the classroom were developed by Maria Montessori to enable children to learn math, language, science, and geography in a natural, intuitive, and hands-on way. A trained Montessori directress (teacher) – the directresses at Ronald Knox have received extensive training in the Montessori method, are certified through the American Montessori Society, and continue their education through professional development activities each year. Ronald Knox Montessori School is accredited by the American Montessori Society, signifying a process of rigorous study to ensure that the school is operating at the highest caliber. Many schools can claim to be Montessori – very few are accredited. And with over 50 years of experience educating children on the North Shore, Ronald Knox has proven that the Montessori method instills a love of scholarship into its students. The school educates children from 6 months through 6 years old. Programs start with the Parent/Child class, where young children begin independent exploration and parents learn child development from a Montessori perspective. Starting at age 2, children in the Toddler Program gain independence and confidence as they learn how to take care of themselves and their environment. The Primary Program serves children from 3-6 years old and is a three-year program that teaches not only academics but also social-emotional skills and problem solving. The final year of the program culminates with the option for Full Day Kindergarten, immersing children in an environment suited to their development for the entire day.
