8 | August 10, 2017 | 22nd century media Private School Guide 22ndCenturyMedia.com Youth Choral Theater accepting new members for all ensembles Youth Choral Theater of Chicago (YCT) is a youth choir that has its roots in the North Shore of Chicago for over 30 years. YCT is focused on bringing topnotch musical training to all students seeking musical education, no matter their economic background. Since our beginning, we have done just that. YCT stands out from other youth choirs through our training process that is deeply rooted in music education. Through our four different ensembles, involving students ages 3-18, we train students in a continuous way that helps them move through our ensembles with ease while developing their musical skills. We accept students going through a voice change, which not all youth choirs in the area do, because we believe that a well rounded choir includes all voice types. Another thing that sets the Youth Choral Theater apart is our adventurous musical selections. Through commissions and collaborations with local composers, The Youth Choral Theater performs pieces that are not only challenging to sing, but also expand the musical horizons of our singers. Last year, all YCT ensembles sang songs in Korean, Polynesian, Swahili, and Spanish. Our music addressed issues of discrimination, pride, courage, fear, love, hope, and exploration. We believe that it is not only important to push our students musically, but also emotionally, helping them to develop feelings and emotions behind what they are singing and enrich their lives. The Youth Choral Theater season schedule works hard to eliminate conflicts with school schedules in the area. Classes begin in early September and ends in May with breaks throughout, including Thanksgiving Break, December Holiday Break, and Spring Break. Throughout the season, Youth Choral Theater ensembles have 5-6 concerts. Four of these concerts include all Youth Choral Theater ensembles while the remaining concerts are “professional concerts,” for our older students. The Youth Choral Theater has four ensembles for students, each with its own age range, rehearsal, and concert schedule. Winnetka Children’s Chorusis comprised of students grades PreK-3yo through 1st grade. This group rehearses on 4:30- 5:30 p.m. Mondays at the Winnetka Covenant Church. Concertinais comprised of students grades 2-3 and rehearses from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Mondays at the Winnetka Covenant Church. The Winnetka Covenant Church is located at 1200 Hibbard Rd., Wilmette, IL 60091. These two ensembles perform in the four season concerts that all Youth Choral Theater ensembles are included in. Treble Ensemble is comprised of students grades 4-6 and rehearses from 3-4 p.m. on Sundays at Trinity United Methodist Church. Chamber Choraleis comprised of students grades 7-12 and rehearses from 4-6 p.m. on Sundays at Trinity United Methodist Church (TUMC). TUMC is located at 1024 Lake St, Wilmette, IL 60091. These two ensembles perform on all concerts throughout the YCT season. All of our ensembles are accepting new members, and we want YOU to join us! At the bachelor’s degree level, between 2004 and 2014, the share of STEM-related bachelor’s degrees earned by women decreased in all seven discipline areas: engineering; computer science; earth, atmospheric and ocean sciences; physical sciences; mathematics; biological and agricultural sciences; and social sciences and psychology. Graduates of girls’ schools, however, are faring much better than their peers from coeducational institutions. Girls’ school graduates are three times more likely to consider majoring in engineering and six times more likely to consider majoring in math, science and technology. “Not only do our graduates go on to pursue degrees in the STEM fields,” says Head of School Meg Steele, “but they go on to become leaders. We are immensely proud that our graduates are blazing trails in traditionally male-dominated fields.” Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart is Lake County’s only singlegender school. Located in Lake Forest, the 159 year-old school is an independent, Catholic day and boarding, college-preparatory school for young women of all faiths grades nine through 12. It’s challenging academic program and extracurricular offerings prepare students to pursue degrees in STEM fields. For example, the Woodlands Academy Robotics team advanced to the FTC Illinois State Championship in 2017. Additionally, Woodlands Academy students earned an average score of 4.5 on the A.P. Calculus exam compared to a 2.9 national average in 2016. Woodlands Academy students also show academic strength across all disciplines evidenced by the fact that nearly one-inthree Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart Class of 2017 were honored by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) State Scholars. Honorees were chosen based on a combination of exemplary ACT or SAT test scores and sixth-semester class rank. They typically rank in or near the top 10 percent of high school seniors from 765 high schools across the state.
