LFA’s Global Concentration Program answers that call to action. The program launches this fall with an inaugural cohort of 11 students, all rising juniors. What distinguishes LFA’s program from global certificate programs at other schools, says Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Director of Curriculum Kristine Von Ogden, is team focus. “Students work in a cohort; communication and collaboration are key. In many other schools, the students have a list to check off—a course to take, a trip to be part of, service to complete— and they complete the program individually. This is a two-year program. Students make a commitment, work together, and develop an individualized program for themselves, all the while working with a group of peers.” The overarching goal? To help students understand that not only can they make a difference, but how to make a difference in their lives and the lives of others. In short, how to implement their researched ideas and solutions. Ms. Von Ogden notes that she and the students are looking forward to “learning how to make a difference, how to become and stay personally invested, how to follow through with something, how to get to the root of a problem or issue, and work on solving it sustainably from the ground up.” Intended as a two-year program, the Global Concentration Program should reach its capacity of 20-30 students—all juniors and seniors—in 2018-19. Ultimately, program alumni will stay involved post-graduation and will mentor current students. A new academic department will be added to oversee the curriculum. According to Ms. Von Ogden, there will be required reflection (journals, vlogs, etc.). Students will have coursework, including readings and film viewings. At times, they will present what they’ve learned to the wider student body. “Their assessments will involve interaction, reflection, and be hands-on.” Technology will be key. “For research, for live and asynchronous interaction with global communities, as a platform for reflection—the possibilities [for technology] are endless,” Ms. Von Ogden explains. “Much of this will become student-driven, so I am excited to see what they will develop.” Head of School Dr. John Strudwick adds that a quality education involves “looking outward from oneself and the known to examine, explore, and experience people, places, and events from afar and the unknown. A key to our success is to ensure that education is relevant to everyone and what is occurring in the world. Relevance and inclusion are essential concepts in developing an educational program; they are pivotal elements at LFA.” Submitted by Lake Forest Academy, 1500 W Kennedy Rd, Lake Forest, www.lfanet.org, 847-615-3210.
