<strong>Astellas</strong> – FY16 Corporate Social Responsibility Report<br />
Wish Child Alessandro, 5<br />
When Starlight’s Wish Coordinator visited 5 year old Alessandro and his family, he was more<br />
than excited to show her his collection of toys. He loves all of them, just like any other kid<br />
does. The difference is that when Alessandro was just ten months old, he was diagnosed with<br />
Severe Hemophilia B. Due to his severe bleeding disorder, he requires prophylaxis several times<br />
a week to reduce the risk of hemorrhaging. Alessandro made a point of introducing the Wish<br />
Coordinator to a very special group of toys – his Disney collection and a plane that he had built<br />
to show how much we wanted to go to Disneyland for his wish. On December 17, 2016, with<br />
the support of <strong>Astellas</strong>, Starlight made sure that Alessandro’s wish came true, brightening up<br />
the life of this special boy and his family.<br />
Wish Child Mariam, 17<br />
Mariam is the 1 in 100,000 to be diagnosed with the very rare McArdle’s Disease. As a 17 year<br />
old, this disease has greatly impacted her academics, and especially her social life. Due to the<br />
severe pain Mariam experiences, she has missed about 50% of her classes. While her school<br />
has been supportive in providing online classes for her to take, her absence creates a feeling<br />
of isolation as she misses out on all the other things that a teenage girl looks forward to – like<br />
hanging out with her friends and having a fun time.<br />
Mariam’s wish was to take a trip to Disneyland with her mom, with the comfort of knowing she<br />
would have the help she needed in the case of a debilitating cramp. “The wish was more than<br />
