// A YEAR IN REVIEW
“Our people are passionate about
helping others. Every day, we are
the Astellas Way - Patient Focus,
Ownership, Results, Openness and
Integrity – which are the driving
forces behind our actions.”
As a pharmaceutical company, our greatest contribution is providing
core – this is our business. Yet at Astellas, our corporate creed ‘Changing
Tomorrow’ – calls on us to do even more.
commitment and dedication to making a mark on the world are important
pieces of our heritage, our culture and at the heart of our organization.
I am pleased to show you the many ways Astellas Pharma Canada (APCA)
employees came together to do more in FY2016, in our annual Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) report. In the following pages, you will see the
actions we’ve taken through Giving Back as ‘One Astellas’, Strengthening
our Communities, and Supporting our Patients and Partners.
Our people are passionate about helping others. Every day, we are
guided by the principles rooted in the Astellas Way - Patient Focus,
Ownership, Results, Openness and Integrity – which are the driving forces
behind our actions.
Recently, for the second consecutive year, APCA was recognized as one
of Canada’s Top 50 Best Work Places by the Great Place to Work Institute.
This achievement is a tribute to our people, who take tremendous pride
in serving patients and caring for our communities. Continuing in the
tradition of the Astellas Way, we seek to attract and retain not only the
best individuals, but the right people who fit naturally with our values
and mission—people who understand that what we do is second
only to how we do it. Thank you to the Astellas family for their lasting
commitment to the work we do and embracing a philanthropic mindset.
Everyday, they choose to make a meaningful difference for our patients
and the communities in which we work and live.
Medical Affairs Americas Employees Help
Change Tomorrow for Vancouver’s Native Youth
On July 22, approximately 200 Medical Affairs
employees attending the Medical Affairs
Americas Annual Forum in Vancouver, Canada
came together to make a difference in the lives
of 330 local Native youth. This event was part of
Changing Tomorrow Day, where Astellas offices
globally participate in planned volunteer activities
in their local communities throughout the year.
Employees sorted and packed nearly 5,000 items
donated by Astellas that will support local Native
youth, including items for:
• Youth Home Start-Up Kits containing dishes,
cutlery and non-perishable food items for
Native youth leaving foster care or home for
the first time.
• Newborn Start-Up Kits including baby
shampoos, lotions, baby nail clippers and wipes.
• Art and school supplies for Native families that
have trouble affording such items.
In addition, Astellas donated $5,000 to Urban Native
Youth Association (UNYA) and employees made
individual contributions totaling $7,500 that will
support programs to improve the lives of Native
youth transitioning to adulthood and families who
are struggling to afford basic necessities.
On behalf of Native youth, UNYA staff and
Board members, Cheryl Robinson, Programs
Administrator, extended heartfelt appreciation to
the Astellas employees for their volunteer work.
The Urban Native Youth Association is very grateful for the generosity witnessed
today among Astellas and its employees. The practical kits that were created in
such a short time will make a lasting impact in the lives of so many of Vancouver's
Native youth, and tangibly demonstrate to Native youth that they are cared for and
supported by their community."
“Astellas I.T. Team Builds Wheelchairs to
Support Victims of Hurricane Matthew
In the fall of 2016, employees from Astellas Americas Information Systems took a day to
assemble, test and decorate wheelchairs. These wheelchairs were subsequently donated
to the American Red Cross and sent to Florida to help those affected by Hurricane Matthew.
“
Being able to give back by building a
wheelchair was very close and dear
to my heart. My mother used one for
years and it was an essential part of
her life. Having the opportunity to
provide that support to others meant
a lot. But doing it while working
together with my colleagues was an
added bonus.”
Astellas USA Foundation
Astellas USA Foundation is a tax-exempt, nonprofit corporate foundation
that awards grants to support charitable, scientific, literary and educational
programs. It also provides grants to US, Canadian and Latin American
nonprofit organization s that align with their focus areas.
“We are grateful for the kindness and generosity of the Astellas
Pharma Canada employees in support of our Alberta Fires
appeal. Thank you again for making a difference in the lives of
those most vulnerable.”
– Carol Stanford
Associate, Community Engagement Department of Philanthropy
Canadian Red Cross, Ontario Zone
Since its inception in 2005, the Foundation has contributed more than $20
million to charities to help sustain and enrich the communities where we live
and work. In May 2016, a $20,000 grant was made to the American Red Cross
to provide disaster relief to Canadian families who were devastated by the
wildfires in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
Astellas Pharma Canada employees also banded together to provide aid to those
affected by the largest wildfire evacuation in Alberta’s history. Employees dug
into their pockets to donate just under $8,000; this amount was matched by the
company, resulting in a donation to the Canadian Red Cross of close to $16,000.
APCA Volunteers Inspired by Athletes
at Canadian Transplant Games
Astellas Pharma Canada employees were excited
to volunteer at the Canadian Transplant Games
that took place in Toronto through the week of
August 8th, 2016.
The week of activities began with Astellas
volunteers greeting athletes as they arrived at
Union Station, helping them with their luggage
and escorting them to waiting shuttles. "It was
great meeting all the athletes before they left to
register for the Games," said Paul Richter, Executive
Product Specialist.
On Tuesday, the Astellas team assisted with the 5
km Cycling Race at Sunnybrook Park – counting
down start times, setting up and manning
signposts along the route, cheering the athletes
on and helping with the medal ceremony. They
also had the opportunity to work side-by-side
with Eileen Zhang, a living donor cycling across
Canada to raise awareness for organ donation. "It
was an inspiring, emotional and very special day
that taught me some life lessons," said Hardip
10

Mahida, QA Associate. "Eileen Zhang was a great source of motivation, an
amazing personality."
The Wednesday team spent their day helping out with a variety of events,
including the family games on Olympic Island. "I had so much fun running a game
of Twister for the kids at the afternoon picnic!" said Denisse Irrgang, Commercial
Operations Analyst. "There was a beautiful presentation in which transplant
recipient children thanked their siblings for their support. I was so moved by the
resilience and joy of the participants - it was a truly memorable day."
On Thursday, Astellas volunteers supported the 5 km run for adults and the
1 km run for children at Sunnybrook Park, where they helped with mapping
out the route, directing athletes and cheering them on, keeping time and
assisting spectators. "It was such a great experience to be at the finish line to
see how proud friends and family of the athletes were when their loved ones
finished the race," said Lisa Li, MSL. "This event really demonstrated to me
that anything is possible after donating an organ or receiving a transplant. A
big thank you to the Games organizers and Astellas for providing us with the
opportunity to volunteer!"
Astellas Showcases Commitment to
Oncology with #baskets4bros Event
On November 28th, 2016, Astellas Pharma Canada held the #baskets4bros event at the Air Canada
Centre (ACC) in Toronto, amid a full house of cheering Raptors fans. As the Toronto Raptors took on the
Philadelphia 76ers, special broadcasts – including a Top 10 Moustaches countdown - encouraged fans
to post selfies using the hashtag #baskets4bros. For each selfie posted with this special hashtag, APCA
committed to making a $5 donation to Movember (to a maximum of $50,000). There was strong response
on social media, including a tweet from astronaut Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian to walk in space.
It was a great evening that showcased Astellas’ commitment to oncology and changing tomorrow, and
resulted in $50,000 donation to Movember.
Raise Funds for Movember
The 2016 Astellas Movember team and APCA
employees banded together to pull off a
spectacular Movember fundraiser in 2016. Astellas’
Mo-Bros and Mo-Sistas did an incredible job of
competed in the in-house MOVE challenges.
Other successful in-house initiatives included a
Pizza & Bingo lunch, the Movember Bake Sale, and
a Chili Cook-off. When all was said and done, APCA
Astellas Steps Up in the Fight
Against Prostate Cancer
On March 5, 2017, APCA Medical Affairs employees
accepted the challenge to climb the stairs in 6
Toronto skyscrapers, raising funds to support the
fight against prostate cancer. Prostate Cancer
Canada’s Step Up Challenge involves teams of five
competing in a 5,000 foot race up a number of the
tallest skyscrapers across Canadian cities. This year
marks the 4th annual challenge, with corporate
teams located in Vancouver, Calgary and Toronto
raising more than $650,000 for prostate cancer
research.
time of 80 and 83 minutes. A huge thank you to
everyone who came out and to Astellas Pharma
Canada for the generous donation.”
Associate Directory, Urology. “A very noble cause
and I am proud that Astellas is one of the key
supporters for this initiative for Prostate Cancer
Canada awareness.”
All proceeds from the Toronto Step Up
Challenge will be invested in research
focused on early detection, treatment,
and survivorship, as well as helping PCC to
produce up-to-date, accurate, and effective
support resources and services that are
ASTELLAS ASPIRE
Astellas Aspire is APCA’s official partnership with the Starlight Children’s
Foundation – an organization that helps lift the spirits of seriously ill children
and their families through entertainment, education and family activities.
Managed by APCA’s Cause Committee, the partnership supports Starlight
in two main ways: raising funds for Starlight Wishes and Great Escapes.
Starlight Children’s Foundation events are supported through employee
donations and employer matching. For each one hour of salary donated,
Astellas doubles the donation to Starlight Children’s Foundation. For
example, if an employee donates $100, Astellas adds $200, so that Starlight
receives $300.
The following are the ways in which Astellas Aspire contributed to
Starlight in 2016.
these Starlight families watched from a private box at the Air Canada Centre as the Toronto
To Kevin and the Astellas team:
On behalf of Starlight, and the children we work with,
thank you so much for hosting (and donating) an
awesome evening for our Starlight families. Each
and every attendee had an amazing time and
thanked us over and over again. Meeting the team
This past June, I was turning 8 and a miracle
happened. Debbie and the Elves from Starlight
Children’s Charity threw me a birthday party
on a pirate ship! There were cupcakes, presents
and best of all – friends. For the first time in
my life I was special for something other than
my disabilities. I would like to thank everyone
involved with giving me the best birthday I
Wish Child Emily, 13
When Starlight spoke with Emily’s mom about her daughter and living with Epilepsy
Hypothyroidism, this is what she had to say:
“Emily is a true superstar! Her journey began at birth as a very sick little girl born with down
syndrome, a hole in her heart and a malformed blocked intestine. As the years have added to
her age, so have the challenges. At 13, Emily is tube fed, has uncontrolled seizures, has endured
many serious infections, scoliosis, hypothyroidism, diabetes insipidus, post-traumatic stress
“I can't thank you enough for the beyond incredible Wish
Trip we had! It was simply amazing. Every detail is just so
special. It felt like the biggest hug being there.
disorder, anxiety, and a cognitive delay, all while she is rocking her extra chromosome! Emily
has lived a superstar life of many helicopter and plane rides, “escorted” (ambulance) trips, all
being the guest of honour a.k.a. Superstar.
Her greatest strength is her resilience and true larger than life personality and positive outlook.
Her biggest joy is spending time singing and dancing and keeping up with the latest on her
favourite stars. She dreams of being a superstar and practices each and every day. Emily has a
way of capturing the hearts of all who cross her path and remind us all, regardless of challenges,
to always dream big and have fun!”
For her wish, Emily dreamed of going to Disneyland for a superstar experience. “I can't thank
you enough for the beyond incredible Wish Trip we had! It was simply amazing. Every detail is
just so special. It felt like the biggest hug being there. It was fun and smiles at every turn. The
magic is endless! For Emily her most favorite part was Village Idol, where she continued her
superstardom and performed Little Things by One Direction, a close second was meeting Olaf
and singing with Elsa at the sing along. Thank you so much!” Emily and family
Wish Child Alessandro, 5
When Starlight’s Wish Coordinator visited 5 year old Alessandro and his family, he was more
than excited to show her his collection of toys. He loves all of them, just like any other kid
does. The difference is that when Alessandro was just ten months old, he was diagnosed with
Severe Hemophilia B. Due to his severe bleeding disorder, he requires prophylaxis several times
a week to reduce the risk of hemorrhaging. Alessandro made a point of introducing the Wish
Coordinator to a very special group of toys – his Disney collection and a plane that he had built
to show how much we wanted to go to Disneyland for his wish. On December 17, 2016, with
the support of Astellas, Starlight made sure that Alessandro’s wish came true, brightening up
the life of this special boy and his family.
Wish Child Mariam, 17
Mariam is the 1 in 100,000 to be diagnosed with the very rare McArdle’s Disease. As a 17 year
old, this disease has greatly impacted her academics, and especially her social life. Due to the
severe pain Mariam experiences, she has missed about 50% of her classes. While her school
has been supportive in providing online classes for her to take, her absence creates a feeling
of isolation as she misses out on all the other things that a teenage girl looks forward to – like
hanging out with her friends and having a fun time.
Mariam’s wish was to take a trip to Disneyland with her mom, with the comfort of knowing she
would have the help she needed in the case of a debilitating cramp. “The wish was more than
what we expected. Everything was well thought out and exceptional attention was given to
daycare and sewing curtains for cabins.
Employees also worked on several
projects to support the launch of Camp
Trillum's CampOut for Cancer campaign,
which will enable people across
Ontario to help send families living with
childhood cancer to Camp.
This year's day of service at Camp Trillium was the first Changing Tomorrow Day experience For Dipti
Tankala, Associate Medical Information Manager. "Camp Trillium truly is a camp like no other. I feel
honored to have had the chance to volunteer at a place that gives joy and creates happy memories for
children and their families to cherish forever, " said Dipti.
The day began on a high note and ended the same way, with the announcement that APCA will be
sponsoring the CampOut for Cancer campaign with a donation of $25,000. Tired but happy to have had
the opportunity to give back, and proud of all they had accomplished, the general sentiment felt by all
was summed up by Brendan Lounsbery, Corporate Counsel.
The projects accomplished by APCA employees on CT Day 2016 were recognized
Astellas Partners with GlobalMedic to
Support Syrian Refugees in Canada
On Wednesday, September 14, 2016, Astellas
Pharma Canada partnered with GlobalMedic at
the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Toronto to
pack hygiene kits for Syrian refugee families who
are making Canada their permanent home. As part
of Changing Tomorrow Day 2016, 40 individuals
from the APCA Urology Business Unit spent the
afternoon packing kits with essential hygiene
products such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes,
shampoo and various home cleaning products.
Kits will be distributed to Syrian refugee families
in Canada to decrease their financial burden and
help ensure they stay healthy in their new homes.
GlobalMedic is an operational arm of the David
McAntony Gibson Foundation – a registered
Canadian charity that runs capacity building
programs and provides disaster relief services
to large-scale catastrophes around the world.
GlobalMedic has implemented over 170 disaster
responses in 57 countries.
“When working with Astellas’ team to package
the kits, I was taken aback by how committed
everyone was to making the event a success. The
team then went above and beyond and loaded
the kits into our trailer. Their work ethic and
enthusiasm was amazing and they were truly a
great team to work with.”
“300 hygiene kits were packaged and will be delivered to
Syrian refugee families who are newly arrived to Canada.
That’s approximately 1,500 people that will benefit from this
Matt Capobianco,
support - which is a phenomenal impact," Deputy Director of GlobalMedic.
Cooking for a Cause – Astellas Treats
Ronald McDonald Families to an Italian Evening
On Monday, July 18th 2016, Astellas employees cooked dinner for
approximately 140 adults and children at Ronald McDonald House in Toronto
for the Home for Dinner program. A "home away from home" for families
to stay near their hospitalized child at little or no cost, Ronald McDonald
House strives to make sure that nothing else matters when a family is focused
on their child's health. By eliminating the common worries for families, like
having a nutritious meal or having a place to sleep, the Ronald McDonald
house is a welcome sanctuary for many patients' families.
The group prepared an Italian themed meal that included: meat lasagna, cheese
cannelloni, garden salad, caprese salad, garlic bread, bruschetta, vegetables
and dips and tiramisu. The Italian theme was amplified with decorations, a
photobooth with props for families to take pictures, music, and loot bags for the
kids. Everyone was also treated to an ice cream surprise with a Baskin Robbins
cart and sundae bar (a first at Ronald McDonald House!). The families were very
appreciative of the food and the extra effort that Astellas employees put into
the dinner. Joanne Castillo, Senior Regulatory Affairs Associate, summed up her
experience as a first-time volunteer at Ronald McDonald House:
Shared Services Employees Pack Care Kits for
Ronald McDonald House Families
On March 23, 2017, twenty-two Shared Services employees spent an hour assembling care kits – bags filled
with nutritious snacks and breakfast items purchased by Astellas Pharma Canada – for families at Ronald
McDonald House in Toronto. A sense of purpose filled the air as employees quickly divided themselves
into teams; some manned tabletop stations piled high with items, while others went from one station to
the next, filling the bags. Several employees decorated labels for each bag, adding hand-drawn pictures
and heartfelt notes.
150 care kits were assembled by the team, which were then delivered to Ronald McDonald House to help
brighten the day of families with sick children. “Packing the care kits was truly rewarding, it felt good to
be doing something that would help the families at the Ronald McDonald house,” said Jessica Coulis,
Associate Corporate Planning Manager. “I really enjoyed seeing the whole team come together to pack so
many kits, so quickly, while still having fun… talk about a ‘win-win’!”
Upon receiving the kits, Ronald McDonald House sent the following note:
“WOW! These bags are quite impressive.
Thank you again for thinking of Ronald
McDonald House Toronto in your charitable
giving. Your donation will be thoroughly
enjoyed by our families staying with us.”
Astellas Lends Helping Hands to
the Edmonton Food Bank
On December 13, 2016, Astellas Pharma Canada
employees gathered at the Edmonton Gleaners
Association, more commonly known as Edmonton's
Food Bank, to lend some helping hands. The facility
acts mainly as a central warehouse, distributing
food through over 210 agencies, churches and
food depots throughout the city.
The cross-functional team consisted of Jill
Kravinchuk, Patient Access Manager, Mike Reidy,
Sales Manager - Urology, Donna Bergsten, Senior
Product Specialist - Hospital, Wade Aranas, Senior
Product Specialist – Urology and Greg Norman,
Senior Product Specialist – Urology.
Jill describes their experience as follows: “We
spent most of our time building custom hampers
for clients, which will be distributed to churches
throughout the city for single adults and families.
Donna spent most of her time working at the
front entrance providing food hampers to walkin
clients in need. The Edmonton Food Bank is
currently serving about 23,000 clients per month,
which is up from their usual 18,000 clients. This
is due to the economic down-turn and likely
the very cold weather we have had for the past
10 days. It was a great experience and we will be
volunteering again soon for Albertans in need!”
APCA’s Susanne Townsend Cycles 525 km
with NB Doctors Cycling Against Cancer
APCA's Susanne Townsend, Senior Oncology
Product Specialist, cycled an astonishing 525 km
through New Brunswick as part of the NB Doctors
Cycling Against Cancer Volunteer Bike Tour that
took place June 13-17, 2016. The Bike Tour was
led by Dr. Mohammed Harb, department head of
Medical Oncology at the Moncton City hospital, in
support of the hospital's Oncology Clinic.
Susanne shared her experience:
"I volunteered to drive the pace
car and somehow got roped into
cycling the whole 525 km over
5 days! Day one (Moncton to
Kouchibouguac) had 25 cyclists
traveling 120 km in 5 degree
weather with torrential rain and
winds. On day two, we began the
day as the vote group of 8. It was
windy but at least not as rainy.
It got better from there, both the
weather and the riding itself.
Our goal was to raise $30,000 for
the new Moncton Oncology Clinic.
We wanted to purchase 6 sleeper
chairs so that patient caregivers
could comfortably stay with cancer
patients while they had their
chemo treatments. This is especially
important in Moncton, as patients
travel long distances to receive
treatment. We were successful in
our goal, and were also able to
purchase several remote Vital sign
monitors so that patients could
be discharged sooner and still
be appropriately monitored
from home.”
