APCA’s Susanne Townsend Cycles 525 km
with NB Doctors Cycling Against Cancer
APCA's Susanne Townsend, Senior Oncology
Product Specialist, cycled an astonishing 525 km
through New Brunswick as part of the NB Doctors
Cycling Against Cancer Volunteer Bike Tour that
took place June 13-17, 2016. The Bike Tour was
led by Dr. Mohammed Harb, department head of
Medical Oncology at the Moncton City hospital, in
support of the hospital's Oncology Clinic.
Susanne shared her experience:
"I volunteered to drive the pace
car and somehow got roped into
cycling the whole 525 km over
5 days! Day one (Moncton to
Kouchibouguac) had 25 cyclists
traveling 120 km in 5 degree
weather with torrential rain and
winds. On day two, we began the
day as the vote group of 8. It was
windy but at least not as rainy.
It got better from there, both the
weather and the riding itself.
Our goal was to raise $30,000 for
the new Moncton Oncology Clinic.
We wanted to purchase 6 sleeper
chairs so that patient caregivers
could comfortably stay with cancer
patients while they had their
chemo treatments. This is especially
important in Moncton, as patients
travel long distances to receive
treatment. We were successful in
our goal, and were also able to
purchase several remote Vital sign
monitors so that patients could
be discharged sooner and still
be appropriately monitored
from home.”
