Fodder scam case :
Lalu appears
in CBI court
Patna : Rashtriya Janata Dal
(RJD) chief Lalu Prasad on
Tuesday appeared in a special CBI
court here over
his alleged
involvement in a
multi-crore fodder
scam case, a
government
lawyer said.
Another former
Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath
Mishra would also appear in the
Central Bureau of Investigation
(CBI) court on Tuesday. Mishra is
another accused in the same scam.
Both Lalu Prasad and Mishra
were on bail after serving jail term
in Ranchi in another fodder scam
case. The case relates to withdrawing
Rs 47 lakh fraudulently
from the Bhagalpur treasury.
The CBI had registered a case
in this regard in 1996. Later, it
filed a chargesheet naming 44
accused including Lalu Prasad
and Mishra. Last month, the
Supreme Court had ruled that
Lalu Prasad will have to stand
trial in all the four fodder scam
cases setting aside a Jharkhand
High Court order that had
dropped conspiracy charges
against the former Bihar Chief
Minister. The fodder scam
relates to fraudulent withdrawal
of Rs 900 crore by the Animal
Husbandry Department from
various district when Lalu
Prasad was the Chief Minister.
Saharanpur violence :Village head,...
“During interrogation, the accused
said that they executed the killing
along with their associates. The hunt
for rest of the accused is going on,”
the spokesman said.
The police also booked a person
for allegedly posting “false and misleading”
messages on the social media
about Shabbirpur village. “Satpal
Kanwar has been booked for posting
misleading messages and also for trying
to raise funds through a bank
account in the name of financial aid to
Dalits,” SSP Bablu Kumar said.
Upside of Paying
by Credit card
Being aware of the potential risks and following the
below prevention advice could minimise the likelihood
of fraud:
Paying by Credit Card will provide you with
protection under *Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act*,
for purchases above £100 and below £30,000.
This means that even if a Company goes into liquidation
before your big day (i.e. Holiday, foreign trip or any event)
you could claim a refund through your Credit Card Company
No clarity over inclusion
Saharanpur riots: There is substance in Dalit...
Against this backdrop, the Dalit movement has immense potential
to transcend boundaries unless reined in as a serious law and order
problem. Saharanpur has a history of caste and communal violence.
In 2014, Sikhs and Dalits clashed. The population comprises 53 per
cent Hindus and 41 per cent Muslims and the rest are split into other
sects/castes. Politicians calculate their votebank accordingly and
exploit the voters. This time, the names of national icons like
Maharana Pratap and Dr BR Ambedkar were used to the hilt.
It’s ironical that the intelligence machinery of the state didn’t get
a whiff of the problem initially brewing and which snowballed into a
major issue which still shows no sign of dying down. What went
wrong with the intelligence? It’s the most crucial part of the administration.
There is a local intelligence unit and the zone office (ZO),
both parts of state intelligence. Their mandate is to garner first-hand
real-time intelligence and share with the district administrators for
diffusing any upcoming unpleasant situation affecting peace and
tranquility. It looks like their role was abysmally unsatisfactory as the
city remained tense. They could have given timely advice to the
administration, that if Mayawati paid a visit to the city, things might
worsen. But no such warning was given and if at all it was given, the
same went unheeded, leading to relapse beyond repair. It’s time intelligence
apparatus is revamped to prevent further damage. After
Adityanath’s advent to power, people had expected things to improve
but that is not to be.
A series of police officers and district magistrates have been shuffled
and reshuffled but all are struggling to pacify Saharanpur.
Politically, in the meantime Dalit leader Chandrashekhar has added
much glamour to his persona and is now being gradually seen as a
substitute for Mayawati. With Behenji on the wane, it’s likely that he
will be a natural choice to fill the void. Also, because Mayawati’s
erstwhile party honchos stand marginalised after BSP’s debacle in
the recent state elections. It’s observed that Chandrashekhar enjoys
tremendous outside support from universities like JNU and
Hyderabad, and Saharanpur-linked developments have provided
enough fillip to the Dalit movement in this part of the region. Till
such time as the dust settles down in a clearly polarised and tense
Saharanpur and a lull prevails, there is need for a central body comprising
the central police and intelligence officers to periodically
monitor and review happenings in the city, so that things are preempted
before they assume ugly proportions. It’s also possible to
bring in a neutral, acceptable public figure of repute to use his or her
good offices to facilitate a round table meeting of both factions for a
conciliatory move to usher in peace and order.
Chennai : The makers of
superstar Rajinikanth's Tamil
film "Kaala" haven't reacted to
rumours about Malayalam
megastar Mammootty being
part of the project, which is
being directed by Pa. Ranjith
and produced by Dhanush.
Social media is buzzing with
reports that Mammootty has
been signed on to play B.R.
Ambedkar-like role in the film.
Reacting to the reports, a source
from the film's unit told IANS:
"I'm not at liberty to speak. It's
best if the makers react to such
things." In the film, Rajinikanth
plays a slum-lord-turned-gangster.
Huma Qureshi, Nana
Patekar, Anjali Patil,
Samuthirakani and Pankaj
Tripathi play key roles.
The project marks the
reunion of Ranjith and
Rajinikanth, who had previously
worked together in "Kabali".
Meanwhile, several shooting
stills have been leaking from the
sets of the film on a daily basis.
The makers are finding it
extremely difficult to control the
leak. "We are currently shooting
in Mumbai, and most of it is
happening outdoors. With
Rajini sir on sets, it's extremely
difficult to stop people from taking
pictures. Thanks to technology,
great pictures are taken
even while standing hundreds of
metres away," the source said.
The film has music by Santhosh
Narayanan.
CBI raids NDTV's
Prannoy Roy's
residence in Delhi
New Delhi : The CBI on Monday raided
NDTV founder Prannoy Roy's residence
here and registered a case against
him and his wife for causing alleged loss
to a bank. The Central Bureau of
Investigation registered the case against
Roy, his wife Radhika Roy, a private company
and others and conducted searches at
Roy's Greater Kailash-I residence in south
Delhi. "Searches are being conducted
today (Monday) at four places including
Delhi and Dehradun," CBI spokesperson
R.K. Gaur told IANS.
Jogging may reduce risk of hip and knee joint pain
New York : Joggers are less
likely to experience knee and hip
osteoarthritis compared to sedentary
individuals and competitive
runners, says a study. As such running
at a recreational level for up to
15 years – and possibly more – may
be safely recommended as a general
health exercise, according to the
study published in the Journal of
Orthopaedic and Sports Physical
Therapy. "The principal finding in
this study is that, in general, running
is not associated with
osteoarthritis," said lead author
Eduard Alentorn-Geli from the
Department of Orthopedic Surgery,
Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
Minnesota, US.
"The novel finding in our investigation
is the increased association
between running and arthritis in
competitive, but not in recreational
runners," Alentorn-Geli said. The
international team of researchers in
Spain, Sweden, Canada and the US
aimed to evaluate the association of
hip and knee osteoarthritis with
running and to explore the influence
of running intensity and years
of exposure on that association.
The researchers did a systematic
review of several studies investigating
the relationship between running
and arthritis of these weightbearing
joints. The studies involved
a total of 114,829 people. Runners
were considered "competitive" if
they were identified themselves as
professional/elite athletes or participated
in international competitions.
Recreational runners were
those individuals who ran in a nonprofessional,
or amateur, context.
They found that only 3.5 per cent of
recreational runners developed hip
or knee arthritis. This was true for
both male and female runners.
