Editorial Germany is the industrial core re- gion in Europe. Its industries are based on effi cient and innovative materials and, in particular, a strong steel industry. The steel industry in Germany com- prises 100 companies and 91,000 employees. All these companies in the steel industry are innovative and internationally active, with qualifi ed and highly motivated employees. Germany is also a centre of steel research and development, and the steel companies have achieved great successes here. The close connections between the steel industry and its customers are also advantageous. Steel production in Germany fol- lows the principle of sustainability and is globally competitive. For its success the steel industry supports open markets and international fair trade rules.
