ThyssenKrupp Steel is the only steel company worldwide under- taking growth investment to fo- cus on the highly profitable segment of high-end carbon steel fl at products. To this end the erection of a steel mill in Brazil with an annual capacity of 5 million tonnes of slabs is underway to underpin its market strategies for Europe and the NAFTA region. In addition the company is building a plant in south- eastern USA and expanding its capacities in Europe to process the slabs from Brazil. The capital expenditure for these projects will amount to more than € 6 billion. 42 10 years ago, in March 1997, Thyssen and Krupp agreed to merge their carbon steel flat products opera- tions. The company started out as ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG on the 1st of September. At that time they were pioneers in the consolida- tion of the European steel industry, and it has paid off. In fiscal year 2006/2007 the ThyssenKrupp Group achieved its best results since the merger in 1999 with pre- tax profi ts of € 3.3 billion on sales of € 51.1 billion. The Steel segment played a major role in this successful performance. With around 40,000 employees they expanded its sales by 9 per cent to € 13.2 billion. ThyssenKrupp Stainless ThyssenKrupp Stainless AG brings together all ThyssenKrupp’s activi- ties in the areas of stainless steel flat-rolled products, nickel alloys and titanium. Thanks to its inno- vation potential, the company has achieved a leading market position worldwide. ThyssenKrupp Stainless AG is the holding company of the Stainless segment within ThyssenKrupp AG.
