In allowing his designs to be guided by the senses rather than trends,
Jonas also tries to avoid the use of artificial materials that have been
painted or lacquered, opting instead for different ceramics, metals and
woods that give texture and tactility to MENU’s products and furniture
series. Each product is created with a particular function in mind.
At Norm Architects, Jonas and Kasper, who both trained under
Danish industrial designer Ole Palsby, pay heed to Scandinavian design
traditions and the principles of Modernism. Jonas approaches design
with a certain restrained minimalism that undergoes numerous stages
of refinement.
Jonas likens his approach to design as similar to curating an art
exhibition: “If you put a lot of objects on a table and ask, ‘How many
things can I take away before it becomes uninteresting?’ At some point,
you have to put things back on the table until you find a balance and
there’s nothing more that you can add or take away to make a piece
better. It’s the same thing with design.”
