Vogemann Company 1886 – 1946 In 1946, Richard Vogemann, son of the founder Johann Heinrich Vogemann, paints the history of his company from its creation to the threshold of the post-war period in a detailed narrative, largely taken from his own experiences. His text, in a slightly revised version, forms the basis of the following first section of the company's history during the years 1886 - 1946. S everal years before the H. Vogemann company had been entered into the Hamburg commercial register on the 22nd April 1886 by my father, Johann Heinrich Vogemann (born 22nd July 1849), my father was already in Vegesack, in the Buchtstrasse, acting as correspondent managing owner and, as a matter of fact, it was for the sailing ship “Western Chief”, managed by my grandfather, Captain Ferdinand Haesloop. Initially, this ship was jointly operated with the sailing ship owner, Hinrich Kückens, who lived in Vegesack and sailed under its house flag bearing the letters H.K. Shortly afterwards, my father acquired the shares held by Mr Kückens so that all the shares belonged to him. The house flag of the H. Vogemann company then evolved from an old red English civil ensign by removing the Union Jack and sewing a white “V” onto it. It must have been around this time that my father commissioned his brother-in-law Carl Ulrichs, co-owner of the Vegesacker shipyard H.C. Ulrichs (later part of the Bremen Vulkan) to build the steamship “Walküre” (around 750 t deadweight). I was later told that they had originally intended to name the ship “Vesuv” because a name beginning with “V” was one of the options available. But they changed their minds about this once the captain explained that “he doesn't want to sail on a fire-breathing mountain”. They then settled on the name “Walküre” instead and for the next ship commissioned at the H.C. Ulrichs' shipyard, they opted for the name “Rheingold”. Principally, the “Western Chief” must have been used for long sea voyages because my father told me that he received a telegram when 8 125 years of H. Vogemann – Tradition, Reliability and Competence
