07. The Canadian Friends in Edmonton<br />
partnered with the JNF of Edmonton<br />
to honor Dr. James Shapiro, a<br />
groundbreaking diabetes researcher<br />
whose “Edmonton Protocol” is poised<br />
to radically change the way diabetes<br />
is treated. Proceeds from the event<br />
funded, in part, collaboration between<br />
Dr. Shapiro and Prof. Yuval Dor, of<br />
The Hebrew University’s Institute for<br />
Medical Research Israel-Canada.<br />

Einstein Gala. The gala honored<br />
recipients of the Jake Eberts Key of<br />
Knowledge Award, recognizing leaders<br />
who have bettered society through<br />
the advancement of knowledge and<br />
personal example. This year’s winners<br />
included: The Azrieli Foundation,<br />
represented by its Chair and CEO, Dr.<br />
Naomi Azrieli; Shuki Levy, composer,<br />
television writer, director and cofounder<br />
of Saban Entertainment;<br />
Jeff Martin, Founder & CEO, Tribal<br />
Planet and Albert Einstein Foundation<br />
International Executive Committee<br />
Co-Chair; and Apotex Inc., represented<br />
by its Chairman, Dr. Barry Sherman.<br />
The event served as the formal launch<br />
of the Albert Einstein Foundation,<br />
attracting nearly 800 people and<br />
raising almost $2 million in support of<br />
initiatives to nurture future Einsteins.<br />
