Many more sponsors are needed
from local congregations, businesses
and civic groups to meet
the anticipated high demand.
During the 2016 Christmas season,
1,133 persons from 350
families were served throughout
Moore County.
The Christmas for Moore Steering
Committee is a group of volunteers
from The Village Chapel, Southern
Pines and Pinehurst United Methodist
churches and The Salvation
Army. It is now time to add many
additional sponsors for one of the
largest and most needed support
programs for those who would go
without during Christmas in our
community.
The Christmas for Moore program,
formerly known as Empty Stocking
Fund, provides one item of clothing,
one household item for each
adult or one new educational toy
to low-income families during the
2017 Christmas season. Please
sign up today. You may secure a
sponsorship form by calling: 910-
947-4438 and leaving a voice
mail.
“We have a real dichotomy
here,” Dice says. “We have
higher incomes, but a lot of
these households are retired
residents. Many local families
with children are struggling just
to provide food. In the Moore
County School system, currently
43 percent of the schoolchildren
qualify for the reduced or free
lunch program.”
In one interview session, a father
of four stood out. He worked a
full-time job at a manufacturing
plant locally, but his wages were
low; he learned his job was going
to be eliminated. While meeting
with Christmas for Moore, he insisted
he did not want anything
for himself but only Christmas
gifts for his four children.
“When the family’s gifts were
delivered, hugs and Christmas
wishes were exchanged between
the giver and receiver,”
Dice recalled. “With tears in his
eyes, the father remarked how
his family has been truly blessed
by the generosity extended in his
time of real need. This is what
Moore County is about: helping
those in need.”
We anticipate over 600 families
and possibly more are in need this
year of sponsorship. The group
asks the community at large to
sign up early. Many critical needs
exist in the West End, Robbins,
Carthage and Vass areas that
need to be served due to the lack
of jobs.
“The families are in need of our
help at Christmas are certainly
there, and waiting for our support,”
says Eleanor Voelkel, Christmas
for Moore Steering Committee
Chair. “We hope you will join
us in bringing Christmas to local
families who need assistance.”
Steering committee member
Myron Dice noted that although
Moore County is one of the 20
wealthiest in the state, there is
Myron and Barbara Dice and
fellow steering committee members,
Dana Fierro and Sherri
Mangum, are available to speak
to churches, businesses and civic
organizations about the program.
