House and Property
Thank you to member Herb Galbraith who repaired the rotting wood on our west equipment shed door.
And to member John Adams for trimming the tops off our 6 ditch steps to make them safer.
City electricians updated our outdoor lighting to LED to save on energy and replacement of regular bulbs and they
improved the wiring for our hot water supply.
We met with the construction department of the city to discuss replacement of our roof shingles. Hopefully, this
will be done in the fall. We have requested new benches but the park law requires that new ones be anchored to
concrete platforms so it is an expensive endeavour that they will explore.
We have purchased all the nut and bolts and tools necessary to repair any broken rakes so please put the damaged
rakes aside so some kind soul can repair them—aka volunteer needed.
Greens
An official from the OLBA came to inspect our greens prior to hosting the Provincials in September and we received
a pretty good report card but said we needed a verticut and removal of plantain from the greens. Both have now
been done. (the plantain removal is an ongoing task.).
Even though we have only used the irrigation system required after some maintenance our greens are very soft and
prone to divoting. (I think I made up this word ). Divots cause the bowl to take a different direction and it does not
make for good bowling. Divots also create unsightly greens. That is why we are always stressing the proper placement
of the large ground sheets. If bouncing the bowl beyond the ground sheet continues we may have to use
two ground sheets which will be very inconvenient.
In order to avoid wear patterns on the greens there is a guideline for greens usage posted on the outside blackboard.
Much thought has gone into these directions so please consult before bowling. It is pretty simple if one
knows north /south and east /west.
Someone was asking about the different colours on the top of the backboards. (Green, red, yellow and blue.) These
are used for rink markings and are moved weekly.
Club member, Greg Cockburn, sailing his Shark 24, Eager For More, came
in second at the World Shark Regatta at RCYC in July. This annual event is
held alternatively in Canada and Europe. This year, 47 boats from Canada
and Europe competed. Greg has won the first place title four times in his
sailing career.
