A Letter from the Vicar
Dear Friends,
Who would have thought that I would get a letter from the Queen!
And not just one letter but four! And for those who are thinking I have had
a significant birthday you are quite wrong! This is what I was given on
Sunday 30th April when Venerable Mark Steadman, Archdeacon of Stow
and Lyndsey came to institute me as Rector of the Parishes of Market
Rasen, Linwood, Legsby and Lissington. Certainly a moment I
will not forget. This is also an honour for the people of our
parishes as each letter of induction represents the congregations
which I serve. Our Queen has been made aware of all four
parishes! What an honour for you all. I would like to thank
everyone for the good wishes on this special service and the appreciation shown of my ministry
here so far. It was wonderful to share Evensong with so many people from across the Parishes,
Deanery and Diocese as a whole. The contribution made by The Diocesan Ladies Choir and choir
members from across the Deanery that supported them was also very much appreciated.
Being called to serve here in Market Rasen was something that I felt strongly about when I first
spoke to Archdeacon Jane Sinclair just 3 years ago. I felt God had a purpose for me here. God
calls us in our lives to serve in different places and in different times. I am often touched when I
receive a letter from Rev Victor Searle Barnes a previous Priest of the parish which encourages
and supports my ministry. It is also good to remember his ministry and the ministry of other clergy
and Lay Readers who have served you over the years.
Each one of us is called by God whether we are ordained or not. He calls each of us by name to
serve him in our everyday lives. Sometimes this can be a difficult path but one which we know
God has called us to share with fellow Christians. Soon I will be joined by the Rev Claire Walker
who will be our Curate in July. As we prepare for the arrival of Claire, her husband Darren and
children Rory and Erin please hold them in your prayers. It’s a big step entering into ministry in a
strange place and I am sure that you will welcome them into our church life here.
Ministry is something which you do not take on lightly. Being a presence in the world to represent
God and His people is a huge privilege and responsibility. One which I have tried my very best to
do wherever I have felt God calling me to be. It can have great time and demands not just on
yourself but that of your family. Remembering to rest and reflect in God’s presence is of vital
importance. Can I ask that as Claire arrives in Market Rasen we warmly welcome her but we also
give her and the family time and space to adjust to new surroundings, schools and churches. Her
Ordination is in Lincoln Cathedral on Sunday 3rd July. We hope to organise a bus so that everyone
has an opportunity to share in this joyous moment with all being ordained Deacon at this time.
Every Blessing
Rev Steve
