JUNE 2017 ISSUE 131
A Letter from the Vicar
Dear Friends,
Who would have thought that I would get a letter from the Queen!
And not just one letter but four! And for those who are thinking I have had
a significant birthday you are quite wrong! This is what I was given on
Sunday 30th April when Venerable Mark Steadman, Archdeacon of Stow
and Lyndsey came to institute me as Rector of the Parishes of Market
Rasen, Linwood, Legsby and Lissington. Certainly a moment I
will not forget. This is also an honour for the people of our
parishes as each letter of induction represents the congregations
which I serve. Our Queen has been made aware of all four
parishes! What an honour for you all. I would like to thank
everyone for the good wishes on this special service and the appreciation shown of my ministry
here so far. It was wonderful to share Evensong with so many people from across the Parishes,
Deanery and Diocese as a whole. The contribution made by The Diocesan Ladies Choir and choir
members from across the Deanery that supported them was also very much appreciated.
Being called to serve here in Market Rasen was something that I felt strongly about when I first
spoke to Archdeacon Jane Sinclair just 3 years ago. I felt God had a purpose for me here. God
calls us in our lives to serve in different places and in different times. I am often touched when I
receive a letter from Rev Victor Searle Barnes a previous Priest of the parish which encourages
and supports my ministry. It is also good to remember his ministry and the ministry of other clergy
and Lay Readers who have served you over the years.
Each one of us is called by God whether we are ordained or not. He calls each of us by name to
serve him in our everyday lives. Sometimes this can be a difficult path but one which we know
God has called us to share with fellow Christians. Soon I will be joined by the Rev Claire Walker
who will be our Curate in July. As we prepare for the arrival of Claire, her husband Darren and
children Rory and Erin please hold them in your prayers. It’s a big step entering into ministry in a
strange place and I am sure that you will welcome them into our church life here.
Ministry is something which you do not take on lightly. Being a presence in the world to represent
God and His people is a huge privilege and responsibility. One which I have tried my very best to
do wherever I have felt God calling me to be. It can have great time and demands not just on
yourself but that of your family. Remembering to rest and reflect in God’s presence is of vital
importance. Can I ask that as Claire arrives in Market Rasen we warmly welcome her but we also
give her and the family time and space to adjust to new surroundings, schools and churches. Her
Ordination is in Lincoln Cathedral on Sunday 3rd July. We hope to organise a bus so that everyone
has an opportunity to share in this joyous moment with all being ordained Deacon at this time.
Every Blessing
Rev Steve
JUNE 2017 ISSUE 131
Archbishops letter continued…
Courage, which includes aspiration, competition and ambition, should guide us into trading
agreements that, if they are effective and just, will also reduce the drivers for mass
movements of peoples. We must affirm our capacity to be an outward looking and generous
country, with distinctive contributions to peacebuilding, development, the environment and
welcoming the stranger in need. Our economic and financial systems at home and abroad
should aim to be engines of innovation, not simply traders for their own account. The need
for a just economy is clear, but there is also the relatively new and influential area of ‘just
finance’, and there are dangers of an economy over-reliant on debt, which risks crushing
those who take on too much. Courage also demands a radical approach to education, so that
the historic failures of technical training and the over-emphasis on purely academic
subjects are rebalanced, growing productivity and tackling with vigour the exclusion of the
poorest groups from future economic life.
Stability, an ancient and Benedictine virtue, is about living well with change. Stable
communities will be skilled in reconciliation, resilient in setbacks and diligent in
sustainability, particularly in relation to the environment. They will be ones in which we
can be collectively a nation of ‘glad and generous hearts’. To our concern for housing,
health and education as foundations for a good society, we add marriage, the family and the
household as foundational communities, which should be nurtured and supported as such,
not just for the benefit of their members, but as a blessing for the whole of society.
Contemporary politics needs to re-evaluate the importance of religious belief. The
assumptions of secularism are not a reliable guide to the way the world works, nor will
they enable us to understand the place of faith in other people’s lives. Parishes and
Chaplaincies of the Church of England serve people of all faiths and none. Their
contribution and that of other denominations and faiths to the well-being of the nation is
immense – schools, food banks, social support, childcare among many others - and is freely
offered. But the role of faith in society is not just measured in terms of service- delivery.
The new Parliament, if it is to take religious freedom seriously, must treat as an essential
task the improvement of religious literacy. More immediately, if we aspire to a politics of
maturity and generosity, then the religious faith of any election candidate should not be
treated by opponents as a vulnerability to be exploited. We look forward to a media and
political climate where all candidates can feel confident that they can be open about the
impact of their faith on their vocation to public service.
!6

JUNE 2017 ISSUE 131
Archbishops letter continued…
Religious belief is the well-spring for the virtues and practices that make for good
individuals, strong relationships and flourishing communities. In Britain, these
embedded virtues are not unique to Christians, but they have their roots in the Christian
history of our four nations. If treated as partners in the project of serving the country, the
churches – and other faiths – have much to contribute to a deep understanding and
outworking of the common good.
Political responses to the problems of religiously-motivated violence and extremism, at
home and overseas, must also recognise that solutions will not be found simply in further
secularisation of the public realm. Mainstream religious communities have a central role
to play; whilst extremist narratives require compelling counter-narratives that have a
strong theological and ideological foundation.
Cohesion, courage and stability are all needed in our response to the continuing national
conversation about migration and refugees. Offering a generous and hospitable welcome
to refugees and migrants is a vital expression of our common humanity, but it is not
without cost and we should not be deaf to the legitimate concerns that have been
expressed about the scale of population flows and the differential impact it has on
different parts of society. The pressures of integration must be shared more equitably.
These deep virtues and practices – love, trust and hope, cohesion, courage and stability -
are not the preserve of any one political party or worldview, but go to the heart of who
we are as a country in all of its diversity. An election campaign, a Parliament and a
Government that hold to these virtues give us a firm foundation on which to live well
together, for the common good.
We keep in our prayers all those who are standing in this election and are deeply grateful
for their commitment to public service. All of us as Christians, in holding fast to the
vision of abundant life, should be open to the call to renounce cynicism, to engage
prayerfully with the candidates and issues in this election and by doing so to participate
together fully in the life of our communities.
In the Name of our Risen Lord,
At Mini Messy Church we have been very busy during the month of May. We have spent
time looking at the story of Moses crossing the Red Sea, learning about a beautiful Queen
called Esther who saved the Jewish people and how we can say our prayers to God using
the Lord’s Prayer.
Mini Messy Church families have begun to look
at prayer for the "Thy Kingdom Come"
Archbishop's initiative taking place between the
25th May and the 4th June. We heard how God
will listen when we talk to him. Fun was had
making cup telephones and our older children
wrote their own prayers which we used during
worship. We will be taking our photographs to
the Event being held in Lincoln Cathedral at the
beginning of June to show the work we are doing
within our community.
We became royalty for the day earlier in the
month as we shared the story of a rather
beautiful Queen Esther! Dressing up and
making wooden spoon puppets helped us tell
the story to our young families. Even our
Puppet Mini joined in the fun.
When we shared the story of Moses leading
the Jewish people to safety across the Red
Sea we made cupcakes decorated with blue
icing and jelly baby Moses'. Needless to say
these lovely tasting treats didn’t really last till
our story was told later in the morning! The
children also enjoyed making waves which we used to tell the story during our worship.
Thank you all for the prayers and support our families and team of helpers receive each
week. For this we are very grateful. As the
summer approaches we are getting ready for our
annual picnic and farewell party to all the
children who will be leaving us this year and
heading off to school for the first time.
United Service for Christian Aid
On Sunday 14th May St Thomas’ Church Market Rasen
hosted a United Christian Aid Service to mark the
start of Christian Aid Week here in Market
Rasen. We had the privilege to be joined by
Judy Perry who is the Regional Coordinator for
Christian Aid covering Lincolnshire. She gave an
excellent talk on the work of Christian Aid which
was both inspiring and thought provoking. It was
good to see so many people from the churches in
the town join us for the first service of its kind here in Market Rasen. Next year we
hope to repeat the same event and hold it at the Methodist Church. Thank you to
JUNE 2017 ISSUE 131
A letter from the Primary School
News from Market Rasen Church of England Primary School – May 2017
Welcome to this term’s news from our Primary School. As ever, we have been very busy
with various activities as the end of the school year is fast approaching.
Our Year Two and Six children have successfully completed their National Curriculum
Assessments. We are very proud of their commitment to achieve and the hard work that
they displayed. We look forward to celebrating their achievements with them later in the
year. On Friday 15 th June, our Year Five / Six children will be visiting London for the
day where they will be visiting the National History Museum and the Science Museum
to link with their topics this year.
Our children are thoroughly enjoying their cooking lessons which are running
successfully each week with the help of our cook, Mrs Barnes. The garden phase of our
outdoor area has also been completed and the children have been busy planting seeds to
grow produce to cook in our kitchen to be served with our hot meals.
We are looking forward to our Religious Education themed week after half term where
we will be focusing on Christianity as a world religion. Each class will produce a section
of a large scale cross that will be linked to Christian themes of the Understanding
Christianity resource that we have been using across the school. We are also in the
process of planning our Education Sunday Service with Reverend Steve and we are
looking forward to seeing lots of you at the service.
Many of you may have seen the knights in the news that are being unveiled as part of the
Knights’ Trail that will be at key locations around Lincoln from the 20 th of May. Our
knight is in the process of being completed and we are very excited about it joining the
rest of the knights on display later in the summer.
We continue to have lots of exciting things planned before the end of term, including
Sports Day, Music Evening, Key Stage Two production, visits and visitors to work with
the children and many more events taking place. We look forward to you joining us for
many of these in our busy end of term calendar.
Dementia Friendly Service
St Thomas’ Church, Market Rasen, Sunday 25th June at 3pm
Dementia is one of the greatest challenges facing our
ageing society. There are 850,000 people living with
dementia in the UK now and the number is expected to
increase to two million by 2051. For those living with
dementia and their carers, this disease can be extremely
demanding physically, emotionally and spiritually – a real test of love and faith. Some
often give up coming to church, as those who accompany the person with dementia can
no longer cope with the embarrassment to themselves and their loved one or the
disruption to other people, so they choose to stay away.
At St Thomas' we have been considering what it means to be a Dementia Friendly
Church and how we can come alongside those who live with Dementia, their carers,
family and friends. Everyone has a unique experience and contribution to bring to the life
of the church. We are going to have a Dementia Friendly Service on Sunday 25th June at
3pm. The service will be for half an hour and then followed by refreshments so that we
can have a further time to relax with each other. All ages are welcome.
The Churches Festival
Thank you to everyone who took part in this event over the
weekend of 20th/21st May in both the Parishes of Legsby and
Market Rasen. Both parishes managed to open their doors to
allow people from far and wide come and explore the
beautiful churches we have. St
Thomas Market Rasen was open
on both days and St Thomas
Legsby on the Sunday. Both
churches received many visitors
who appreciated all the hard
work that the congregation
members had done to clean, decorate, provide needed
refreshments and welcome on this special weekend.
The flower decorations in both
churches had taken a considerable amount of skill and time to
produce – they were beautiful. Well done to all who helped in
this, you are certainly a talented
team of people!
Visitors came from far and wide
- County Durham, Uttoxeter,
Nottingham and Scunthorpe to
name but a few places on the
visitor registers. Legsby even
managed a visit from
Sir Edward Leigh
who took time out
from his election
schedule. We think
he may have heard
about Phil Vickers
hot beef baps!
Thank you again to everyone
Rev Steve
Living Generously with our Care Homes
As part of our Living Generously Campaign we now have a team of four helpers who
accompany Rev Steve and Sheila Lamming each month as we take Holy Communion to
members of our congregation and the wider community in Waterloo House and The Poplars
Care Home here in Market Rasen. The month of May saw our first Communion at The
Poplars and we were greeted warmly by both residents and staff. Helping with hymn books,
service sheets and, of course, the singing was much appreciated by all who went. It is a real
privilege and service to take communion to those who once served faithfully in our
churches. Afterwards we enjoyed fellowship, over a cup of tea/coffee chatting to the
residents, some of whom we pray for each week on our prayer lists.
Thy Kingdom Come
25th May - 4th June
‘Thy Kingdom Come’ is a global prayer movement which the Archbishop of Canterbury is
inviting people around the world to join. The wave of prayer has started in May and will run
for 10 days between the Christian festivals of Ascension and Pentecost.
There are Prayer Stations in St Thomas Church for people to come and take some time
away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, relax and have some prayer time with the
theme of The Lord's Prayer. The Prayer Stations will have various ideas for prayer and you
may like to try a new way to talk with God or just spend some time listening for Him to talk
with you.
St Thomas' Church is open as notified on the poster - please take the opportunity to come
and find a welcome at St Thomas’.
Further information can be found in church or by contacting Grace Tompkins Tel 844427
