Westfield Community Association Newsletter
No. 161 August 2017
I
can never be sure from one newsletter to the next what I’ll have to fill the
pages, apart from the growing number of advertisers who continue to find
this a good way to promote their services. Thank you to the regular
contributors who note the deadline dates below and to those who give me all the
other details.
Since the last issue we have had a successful WCA Village Fete as you’ll see on
page 24 and begun a fresh year for the fund-raising Westfield Draw which gives
subscribers a chance of a cash prize each month. There are about the same
number of names as previous years - 280 for what used to be called the 300 Club.
More people paid their £10 online this time, which was a great help, whilst others
used the box at The New Inn (thanks Patrick) and some were lucky enough to
have one of my helpers call to collect - thanks to everyone for their support.
The Grooming Room changed it’s name to Barking Boutique and duly opened in
Chapel Lane.
Sometimes news travels fast round a village, though still manages to miss people
out. Many were stunned by the sudden death of Rama Patel of Westfield Londis
then it was sad to learn that one of our oldest residents, Fred Milward, has also
passed away.
On a lighter note in this issue, thanks to Ron Allen in his Plough Pool report, there
is some entertainment in the form of ‘spot the film titles’ page 33, try to avoid
looking at the answers on page 14 first! Richard’s Ramblings on page 16 is also
quite amusing.
We wish Sylvia Huggett well on her fund-raising run for our local hospice, page 9.
Exam results have received mixed emotions recently for many. Best wishes to
everyone whose future was depending on them - I’ve heard that Richard (ex-
Westfield News) has gained a First for his recent studies.
An early reminder to mark on your calendar, subject to confirmation in
November’s newsletter: the WCA’s Carols round the Christmas Tree will be as
usual at Corbieres, with thanks to Jean Tomsett, on Friday 15 December. These
began all those years ago as an opportunity to give back to the village for all the
fund-raising which had taken place for the Community Hall; there has
never been any charge for joining in the singing or the delicious
homemade soup.
As I write we are still in August - let’s hope the summer weather lasts
well into the autumn.
IN REMEMBRANCE
Kindly submitted to the WCA newsletter by Simon Knight with Ruth Carter
FREDERICK GEORGE TAYLOR
Private - L/9960 - Signals Section, 1 st Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment,
attached 6 th (Poona) Indian Division
Born 1891 in Westfield the third son of William Henry (farm labourer and waggoner on farm) and Mary
Taylor of 1, Kent Street, Westfield. The 1901 census records Frederick living with his parents and four
siblings at Norton’s Cottages, Kent Street, Westfield. Ten years later the census finds Frederick, then aged
19 years, living with his parents, five siblings and a boarder in four rooms at Norton Farm Cottages.
Frederick was then working as a farm labourer.
In mid-1912 Frederick joined the Royal Sussex Regiment. Two years later at the outbreak of war in Europe
Private Taylor was serving with the 1 st Battalion in Peshawar, India (now Pakistan, near the eastern end of
the Khyber Pass) as part of 1 st (Peshawar) Brigade, 1 st (Peshawar) Division, Indian Army. As an
experienced signaler Private Taylor’s expertise would have been of use to the Expeditionary Force then
serving in Mesopotamia (modern day Iraq). He was therefore transferred, with his section, to Basra, where
they were attached to the 6 th (Poona) Indian, Division, then advancing west up the river Tigris.
Frederick landed in Mesopotamia on 3 rd October 1915 in time to join General Townsend’s advance toward
Baghdad. Townsend’s forces had made good progress up to this point having overcome all Turkish
resistance as far as Ctesiphon, only 16 miles southeast of Baghdad. Here on 22 nd November 1915 the
British and Indian troops of the 6 th (Poona) Division again engaged the Turkish army in a two-day battle that
resulted in heavy casualties on both sides and the subsequent withdrawal of both forces. Following the
battle General Townsend decided it was no longer feasible to continue the advance and that he should fall
back on his lines of communication. Once the Turks realized that the 6 th Division was withdrawing they
turned in pursuit bolstered by fresh troops. The pursuit continued until early December when Townsend
decided that he would turn and stand at Kut-al-Amara – a small town in a sharp U-bend in the river which he
could turn into an entrenched camp. Whilst the Turkish Army laid siege to the town Townsend waited for a
promised relief column from Basra. Over the next few months several desperate attempts were made to
break the siege, however, the weather, flooding and the determination of the Turks prevented the relief
column from getting through. By April 1916, five months after they had entered Kut, conditions had
deteriorated to such a point that surrender was the only option. Food had been rationed for most of their
stay and toward the end they had been forced to eat their own horses – the Indian troops suffered the most
as they refused to eat the meat on religious grounds. However, after five months of poor and insufficient
rations every man shut up in Kut was in a deplorable condition. Some supplies were dropped from the air,
but it was insufficient to continue holding out. On 29 th April the garrison in Kut surrendered, but not until all
the war material artillery, rifles and communication equipment was made useless.
The next day the men of the 6 th Division were marched out of the town some eight miles north to
Shamran. Here they waited with little or no shelter in the blazing sun until the 6 th May when they began a
forced march to Baghdad, although, in very poor health and with little medical assistance they managed to
march 100 miles in eight and a half days. After arriving in Baghdad, and being paraded through the city, the
men, now separated from their officers, were held in unsheltered enclosures in appalling conditions. Food
and water was scarce if any could be had at all.
Frederick George Taylor - Continued from page 5
Over the next couple of months the men began their journey to Turkey. The first 70
miles were in open rail trucks to Samarra, but beyond here the journey was by foot,
some 500 miles across desert and mountains. Many men were reduced to bartering
their possessions, especially their coveted boots, for food and water until they had
nothing left. Starved, exhausted and sick, some still with wounds, the men of the 6th
Division assisted each other as best they could on what can only be described as a
‘death march’ until unable to walk any further they fell by the wayside. Some were
taken to inadequate makeshift hospitals others died were they lay. Of the 2,592 British
rank and file taken prisoner at Kut, more than 1,700 died in captivity. Of the 9,300
Indian rank and file and followers, approximately 2,500 died. Frederick did not survive
the journey dying in captivity on 24th August 1916. As the date of his death is
recorded it is probable that he died in a hospital were such things were more likely to be
recorded. Frederick has no known grave and therefore commemorated on the Basra
Memorial, Iraq.
Westfield Surgery
Despite the considerable growth in the village population over the last few years
we have been fortunate to retain a doctor’s surgery that provides a high degree
of healthcare and convenience. The demands have increased not only by way of
patient numbers but with an increase in patients with complex illness’s but also
the administrative load required by law.
There are several ways in which we as patients can help reduce this load and
contribute to the efficient running of our practice.
Quite clearly the telephone is very busy when the surgery opens and it would be
helpful for routine enquiries i.e. the results of tests and any other general
enquiries, to be delayed until later in the morning, preferably after 10 o’clock.
From the beginning of this year 72 hours’ notice is required for repeat
prescriptions. A considerable administrative procedure is involved from the
time you make the request to ensure that you get the right medication, and all
prescriptions must be signed and checked by a doctor before being given to the
patient. The dispensary staff dispense some 12,000 items every month!
(Average Pharmacy in East Sussex issues 7385)
You are asked to check that your medication is correct before you leave the
surgery so that any queries can be dealt with immediately. All items taken out
of the Surgery are unable to be re-used!
Have you ticked all the boxes? Do you really require all the medication from
the boxes that have been ticked? A very considerable quantity of medication is
wasted each month either because it is not needed or boxes have been ticked as
a matter of routine – so easy when we are in a hurry. Indeed some medications
may be used very infrequently and have a “use by” date for anything up to two
years .
Finally each month a considerable number of appointments are made which are
not kept. If you are unable to keep an appointment please let the surgery know
in good time when the slot can be offered to another patient.
From Sylvia Huggett, Westfield
Himalayan 100 mile October 2017
As a runner I fancied a different challenge
and this certainly sounds challenging as the
event is run over 5 days.
The starts are about 5.30 am with temperatures
ranging between 25 – 50 degrees
Fahrenheit at night and daytime 50 - 70 o F.
It is obviously at altitude with Day 1
starting at 12,000 feet approximately and
24 miles to run.
On Day 2 Mount Everest is the backdrop of
panoramic views so there is spectacular
scenery and 20 miles to run.
Day 3 involves completing the Mount
Everest challenge marathon, 26.4 miles,
where we have some downhill running to
encounter.
Day 4 is a bit of a recovery day as only
running 13 undulating miles.
The final day we complete 17 miles and
then will be ready to rest our weary legs.
Having lost several friends to cancer I feel
such a challenge is worthy of sponsorship
and I am raising money for St Michael’s
Hospice. If you wish to sponsor me, visit
For most of the summer term the girls have spent our meeting
evenings out of the hall either on the school field tent pitching and
gadget making, playing games or laying and following trails. Other
evenings have been spent on a village quiz trail, a scavenger hunt
and a games evening. At the start of the school holidays they joined other girls
from the district at a fun day where they learnt First Aid, cooked marshmallow on
open fires after wood gathering, made chocolate Krispy cakes after melting
chocolate over a night light, made woodland craft items, filled a match box with
items from the field and wood then followed a trail in the wood blindfolded.
We are all looking forward to attending a Mad Hatters tea party in
August at the Division Guide Camp.
Meetings restart on 12th September. Any one interested in joining
enrol before 10th October and benefit from a combined terms subs and joining
fee of £25.00.
For details contact Sally Cruttenden on 01424 754927 or 07840506426
Westfield Guides
One badge was completed before the rest of the term and some weekends have
been spent at out door events. A day was spent at a water sports centre where
after trying various activities they were awarded their water safety badge.
Another day was spent on a Global Quest which according to one of the Guides
who went involving "a trip around the world visiting all seven continents and
completing a fun challenge on each one making hot chocolate with a kelly kettle,
a chariot with wooden poles, code breaking and getting my passports stamped
while on a lovely walk. A fun day" Our girls gained 73 points coming 3rd out of 17
teams so well done to them. For the last six weeks of term the girls have spent
meeting nights in Rye with Rye guides preparing for the summer camp in August
making equipment, pitching tents, building and lighting fires and getting to know
the girls they will be camping with.
In September everyone will be back in Westfield starting on
12th so if anyone would like to join us please come along to a
taster evening on 26th and like the Brownies anyone who joins
by 10th October will benefit from a combined fee of £28.00.
July 2017
ur summer terms have
O been jam-packed as
usual and our children have all
had the opportunity to get out
in to the great outdoors to do
some al-fresco learning.
Year 6 spent a wonderful day at Frog Firle Farm, Year 4 enjoyed the beautiful
surroundings of Great Dixter, Reception class and Year 2 had days at Bexhill High
Woods Forest School and Year 5 have been on a woodland exploration at RSPCA
Mallydams Wood.
Our annual Healthy Schools week at the beginning of June got us all active with KidzFit
workshops and team building experiences and also got us thinking about our diet where
we also enjoyed a sumptuous stir fry with the Chartwell cookery school. Our first attempt
at sports day was cancelled due to the predictable British wet weather but we managed
to get it all together for our reserve day and had an exciting day of running races,
obstacle courses and more.
The dizzy heights of Everest, space exploration, deepest jungle encounters and treasure
hunting were the subject of our Explorer Day in June. All the children and staff dressed
as their favourite explorer and had a great day of fun and learning by looking at the
adventures of some of our world’s most famous explorers, including Edmund Hillary and
Tenzing Norgay, Neil Armstrong and Emilia Earhart.
Our PTA Frozen Friday summer fayre extravaganza was a fantastic way to round off our
school year and many children, parents, family and friends joined us for games, events
and dancing for a fun afternoon. The afternoon was a huge success, with our thanks
going to everyone who supported the event, either by helping on the day or just turning
up and enjoying the afternoon. Pennies are still being counted but it looks to be another
fab amount raised for the school which will go towards other events, activities and
resources for the benefit of our pupils.
What a night to remember!! Our Year 5 & 6 pupils gave us 2 amazing nights out to enjoy
with their fantastic performances of Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket during the last days of
our school year. The children took on responsibilities in all roles in the production,
including lighting, acting and singing. It was a colourful production of song, dance and
superior acting and was a fabulous send off performance for our departing Year 6
children.
With sadness we closed our doors on Friday 21 July and said a fond farewell to all our
Year 6 pupils as they spread their wings and head off to their new schools in September.
We also bid farewell to Mr Corke; our year 4 teacher, Mrs Hoggarth; our Year 5 teacher
and Mrs Wiggins, our longest serving member of staff; 30 years of service under her belt
managing our lunch hall as MDSA. We wish them all good luck and happiness for the
future. We are looking forward to a well-earned summer break.
School will reopen for business as usual on Wednesday 6 September.
Richard’s Ramblings ..….…..
THE JOURNEY
I left home at 9 am Friday. Along the A28 without drama, unless you count the
driver who insists on following about three feet from my back bumper, right onto the
A21 at Flimwell - quite good progress made. Negotiated the roadworks, where there
is a 50mph speed limit, I was doing 50 - still being overtaken though. The A21 itself
was not too bad unless you count the driver who, for some reason I still cannot
fathom, overtook me on the dual carriageway when I was travelling at 70, only to
pull abruptly in front and apply his brakes.
Left onto the M25 clockwise, busy but moving well. I had plenty of time so was
content with the nearside lane and 60 to 70 mph. All was going well until for some
unaccountable reason a coach, presumably driven by a professional driver, used an
exit lane to overtake me on the nearside and pull in front. This, together with people
who overtook me at speed before swerving across in front of me, braking and then
taking the exit lane, led me to believe that I was involved in some bizarre
experiment.
Then onto the M4 and I gladly went into Reading Services where, having bought a
coffee I surveyed the other drivers. I sincerely hoped that the elderly man with a
white cane and an assistance dog was someone's passenger although he seemed to be
unaccompanied. After a decent leg stretch I continued through to Wiltshire without
incident.
My return journey began on Sunday at 10 am. I had plenty of time and decided not
to use the motorways again so drove across Salisbury Plain - a road I often use but
have never seen a "Tank Crossing" (Ed: neither have I!) towards Stonehenge and the
usual congestion there getting onto the A303 (Ed: and the pigs; Telegraph readers
may know what I mean). I was still being overtaken regularly while travelling at the
national speed limit. Then I’m onto the A34 southwards towards the Southampton
Portsmouth area. Not a bad road that one. I turned on the radio for some music. A
traffic report tells of a serious crash on the A27 near Chichester with traffic queues of
some five miles. Apparently the Fire Brigade were cutting the roofs off the cars
involved - that is something they do really well; I sincerely hoped that someone would
stop them before they reached the cars which were not involved.
I deviate onto the A272 eastbound, slow but a known route. It is not long before I
encounter a slow moving queue of my own. The culprit was a steam traction engine
towing a tin caravan at walking speed. Overtake that and further on was another
one; deal with him and it’s a multitude of horseboxes. Why is it that horses, designed
to take a human passenger and can travel over most terrain, like to be taken on
sightseeing trips very slowly in a trailer along narrow country lanes? There were scores
of them. I was still being followed, most of the way, by someone seemingly attached
to my back bumper. I was reassured that I had taken the right route by reports of
ever increasing queues on the A27 and congestion on the M25.
I am not a slow driver, regularly driving at the limit when safe to do so. I do object to
other drivers trying to kill me. I have nothing of interest in the back of my car so why
I always seem to be towing someone is a puzzle. Driving is no
longer the pleasure it once was. Dad's Morris Minor, out for a
drive, picnic and then home was a lovely day out. Anybody
do it anymore?
Best wishes and happy motoring. Richard Perchard
enquiries; 01424 753942
Venue: The New Inn Friday mornings from 10am to noon
Well, we reported in the last newsletter that the Hub had arranged a subsidised trip on
the MV Balmoral up the coast to London Bridge. However, due to various unforeseen
circumstances, our numbers dropped so we needed to cancel. Then unfortunately the
boat trip itself was cancelled due to the absolutely horrible weather earlier in the week
of 7 June which apparently resulted in the boat not being where it was scheduled to be.
Another trip, this time to see what happens to the various recycled materials that we
dispose of, was also cancelled, and it began to look like trips just weren’t meant to
happen.
That all changed though with a short notice self-drive visit to Eastbourne to see an
absolutely hilarious comedy at the Devonshire Park Theatre, so another one actually in
the bag! Not sure if it’s polite to mention that the main singer from the theatre
production was later unceremoniously chatted up during the post theatre dinner as
apparently he was ‘so nice, and he was so much younger than he looked on stage’ – but,
no names, no pack drill. Similar attendances will definitely be organised in future.
It seems a long time ago, but we should mention that Hub volunteers manned a stall
with several activities at the WCA Village Fete. That was a thoroughly enjoyable
afternoon, especially as the stall position in the field meant there was a good view of
the arena events and entertainments during the very few quieter moments.
No quizzes have been held over the past couple of months – partly because people have
tended to arrive later in the Friday morning session - which doesn’t leave enough time
to complete the various challenges. So this is just a reminder that you can arrive any
time between 10am and midday.
A couple of other potential trips are back on the cards and although it seems far too
early to be thinking of December, attendance at a Christmas pantomime is being
considered now so that the best seats may be booked. Yes, it really is.
hat a wonderful summer we have had enabling us to
W do many outside activities and make use of our
lovely grounds, thanks to Larry. We went to the beach, the
woods and out in the countryside doing various things to
keep the youngsters interested. The term ended with a
water based evening for both Beavers and Cubs which
culminated with everyone getting very wet on a
waterslide in the HQ garden.
The end of term camp fire and barbeque was a great
evening, well attended by parents and families. After
hot dogs, burgers and Clare’s wonderful cup cakes, the
District Commissioner presented one Beaver and three
Cubs with their Chief Scout Challenge awards. These are the
highest awards that they can achieve in the section and take a lot of hard work,
well done. The usual camp fire songs followed, ably led by Frances, and much enjoyed by the
young people.
The summer camp this year is at Broadstone Warren; nine cubs have signed up and will, I am
sure, enjoy the many activities such as grass sledging, climbing, archery, potholes, go karts and
much more.
Westfield Parish Church
From the Curate….
I wrote my first WCA newsletter article in July 2015 at the end of my first year of
training as the Curate for Westfield Church. My three years of training are now
complete and I am awaiting the formalities of being ‘signed off.’ Rather than
moving on to a new parish I have asked if I can stay in this Benefice of
Westfield and Guestling. There is always plenty to do and I enjoy my ministry in
the country. Three years have seemed to go by very quickly and yet it is hard to
remember what life was like before the dog collar!
I’m writing this on Sunday afternoon after the Pet Service this morning. We
were in the Hall instead of outside because of the recent heavy downpours.
Despite their proximity, the dogs all coped well with each other as did their
owners and the leaf insect and Hammy the hamster added a welcome diversity.
In their absence and at the request of their owners I also blessed seven cats, a
rabbit and two dogs who weren’t able to join us today. Some of the dogs joined
in as we sang God’s praises and gave thanks for this amazing and beautiful
world we share. As we did so we were echoing the words of Psalm 150 ‘Let
everything that has breath, praise the Lord’. We remembered our responsibility
to care for and protect the environment as well as the animals that depend on
us.
We spotted a buzzard flying high above the church before the service began
and the birdsong in the churchyard was, as always, remarkable. The rich
variety of wildflowers, insects and butterflies that the churchyard is home too
adds to its beauty. Despite the A28 so close by, it is still a tranquil oasis where
loved ones can be remembered and lots of dogs and their owners enjoy their
morning and evening constitutionals. The only problem is that the warmth of the
sunshine and the occasional heavy rain have encouraged everything to grow at
a phenomenal rate, so keeping it all under control is proving to be an even
bigger challenge than usual.
Change is in the air. The weather has resumed its unpredictable habits of a
normal summer and the schools have broken up for the holidays. It won’t be
long before we are celebrating Harvest on 1 st October, the Daffodil Service of
Memories on 5 th November and Remembrance Sunday on 12 th November.
They are all important dates for the church and the village and, if the Bishop
allows me to stay in the Benefice, I look forward to marking them together with
many of you. See the separate notices on the next page for further details.
Every blessing, Joy
What a
fantastic
afternoon at
the Westfield
Village Fete!
The perfect weather brought everyone out to
enjoy all sorts of stalls, food, drink and arena
entertainment. Westfield groups raising their
own funds whilst supporting the WCA event
included The Horticultural Society, Community
Hub, Westfield Church, WI, School PTA, The
Football Club who also served liquid
refreshment and chips, and opened their
clubhouse facilities. Thank you to individuals
and organisations who ran stalls, businesses
for their support; huge thanks to Patrick for all
his background work necessary for staging
such an event. The funds raised by the WCA
go towards future events and projects for
Westfield people of all ages.
It was disappointing that many readers did not
display the fete poster as requested on the
back page in the last newsletter. However,
Attractions included Cannibal Drummers,
Fred Milward – D Day Hero
t is with great sadness that we record the passing of Wesield resident, Fred Milward. Fred
I was born in Ticehurst in 1924 but moved to Wesield in 1934 and remained here ever since.
Fred’s first job was as a baker’s delivery boy but in 1940 he joined the Wesield Home Guard
aged just 16. He wanted to join the RAF at 17 but as they wouldn’t take him unl he was 18, he
joined the Royal Sussex Regiment instead. Whilst in the Royal Sussex he volunteered for the
newly‐formed Parachute Regiment ‐ his family suggesng the double cigaree raon issued to
the Paras might have been a deciding factor!
On 6 June 1944, D‐Day, Fred was part of 9th Parachute Baalion who were dropped to
neutralise the German gun‐baery at Merville, Normandy, which threatened the invasion
beaches. The parachute drop was both traumac and dramac, with Fred being thrown out of
the aircra when a shell burst underneath. He hit the tail‐plane as he went but landed safely
and fought his way into the baery with his surviving colleagues. The operaon was successful,
but costly. Of the 155 men who went in, only 75 walked out – Fred amongst them. It was bier
hand‐to‐hand fighng but Fred’s war was far from over; on 26 July 1944 he was severely
wounded by a German shell which le him completely deaf in one ear and shrapnel wounds
down his right side. He spent the remainder of the war guarding and transporng POWs, his
wounds too serious for a return to the front line. Post‐war, he named his house ‘Merville’.
Aer the war he worked locally as a mechanic (Wesield & Brede
Garages) but retained an avid love of aeroplanes and aircra, flying
whenever he could. He also joined the RAFVR and commanded the
Hasngs ATC unit. In 2014 Wesield Parish Council presented Fred
with an illuminated scroll commemorang his D‐Day role (photo).
His wife, Connie, who had been the cashier at Archers, passed away
in 2010. We send our condolences to Richard, Wendy, the
grandchildren and family. He will be sadly missed. Andy Saunders
Members connue to enjoy a varied programme with our
meeng in May hearing from Mike Ward about his life in
Zimbabwe from 1965 to 2012. Mike spent 48 years working
there making maps and eventually became the owner of a company. He explained how
excing and carefree life was inially and then the changes and deterioraon of
lifestyle under President Mugabe’s rule. He eventually sold the business and became a
Presbyterian Elder before returning to the UK and living in Wesield.
Our June meeng was a fun aernoon starng with a quiz followed by a delicious
strawberry tea.
In July we were joined by Gary Enstone who oversees Bateman’s and Bodiam Castle.
He gave an interesng and very amusing talk about a ten day trip in a skiff along the
Thames taken by him, his brother and a friend. They were re enacng the trip taken in
Jerome K. Jerome’s book Three Men in a Boat. The trip was taken to raise money to
build a copy of a small boat Kipling had made
to be sailed on the pond at Bateman’s. Also
in July members enjoyed a day out to
Walmer Castle and in August we are looking
Plough Pool
This quarter the pool article is somewhat different to those that have gone before. All the
news contained therein is as accurate as usual but there have been Gremlins at work
during it’s publication!
Eagle-eyed readers will spot up to sixty film titles in the narrative. Enjoy finding as many
as you can and then check your answers on page 14. There are one or two that are a
little bit phoney where the title has been slightly altered to make the text read properly.
Pool is going from strength to strength at The Plough now where it was alien just a short
while back under the old regime. Us pool players had a raw deal but then the rescuers,
Mick and Mari totally recalled us which saw the end of days at Battle Club, about time too.
It is now a wonderful life for A and B teams and both are doing well in their respective
divisions, Each team is standing third at the time of writing and it wouldn't be mission
impossible if the teams improved upon their positions come the end of the season.
Sometimes it's just the odd couple of frames that make all the difference.
In the Summer League there are big cash prizes for individual players as well as team
prizes. A star is born in our own Mick Gribbon, the landlord from somewhere in time who
is proving to be a real gladiator and is challenging amongst the elite. A prize is awarded in
both leagues, with other people's money going to the producers of the longest winning
run.
There is always a titanic battle for this prize and we hope that Mick shows true grit and
that it's not just a brief encounter with the goodfellas.
The A team recently had a battle royale against Pub 31 of Winchelsea, last year's
champions, and inflicted misery on them by way of earning a 6-6 draw. A shining example
of leadership from vice captain fantastic George Worley left us hoping that this was
perhaps an omen of things to come.
The other guys, the wild bunch that is the B team, are feeling the heat in division two
because run away leaders The Bedford have the perfect score of five wins from five
played. The high and mighty are that far clear at the top that if they looked down they
would get vertigo. There is only room at the top for The Bedford and it doesn't look like
they will be trading places any time soon.
In these modern times it is usual for the chef of the kitchen to provide some food for the
players, this can be sandwiches, meatballs, mash or American pie or the like. There can
often be twelve hungry men to feed and nothing is better received than Vicki's chilli or
curry. She must have a sixth sense because
she seems to know that some like it hot!
Time after time the bar area is turned into
an animal house at the interval before the
good lady vanishes. Vicki really has earned
her stripes in the kitchen.
The last word for this newsletter is about the
competition in house where there are se7en
players through to the next round. In the
beginning there were sixteen. We hope to
bring news of a winter competition open to
all in the next newsletter, elf and safety
permitting.
Final destinations of summer league
positions reported on in next edition.
nce again, it has been a very busy
O term for Playgroup.
Our summer outing to Knockhatch, when we all get together again to enjoy our
picnic lunch; we all had so much fun especially on the jumping pillows.
Sports Day went really well, the children enjoyed the races and were very proud to
receive a certificate and medal. Thank you to everyone who came to support us and
for all the donations, we raised £140.
We had lots of visitors, the ‘Giant Snails’ came to stay for a week when the children
helped to look after them, also chicks, ducklings, butterflies, stick insects and
guinea pigs called Fluffy and Lucky.
The children starting Westfield School this September loved the visits to the
Reception class and spending time with their new teachers.
A fantastic time was had at our leaver’s party, held outside; the children had such
fun in the tree house, playing games, building a fire to cook toast and popcorn
followed by a picnic. I wish all the children and their families all the best for the
future, they will be missed.
I would like to say a big thank you to my staff and the committee for all the hard
work that is put into our playgroup.
Check out our Facebook page to see all the lovely things we do and activities
offered.
If you are interested we have spaces available; you are welcome to drop in at any
Westfield Youth Football Club
This is a busy time of Year for Football Club Secretaries preparing for and
submitting Affiliation Requests and registering players with the Leagues they will be
playing in for next season - Games will be starting mid September 2017. There is a
lot of work going on behind the scenes and it reminds me of a majestic swan in a
flooded river.
I have taken on the role as Youth Secretary in May 2017 due to unforeseen
circumstances that have happened during the last season.
To briefly update the WCA in February 2017 Westfield FC was made aware that Pass
and Move Football Coaching Ltd were stepping away from Westfield FC to create
their own club. This had come as quite a shock personally. As a manager of one of
the 16+ Youth teams ranging from u8 to u17, I had been unaware of these plans.
All teams that had been created as Westfield Youth FC during its association with
Pass and Move Coaching Ltd were taken to the new club. This was against the
wishes of the club committee.
So the task has been set to rebuild our Youth Football Club over the next few
Seasons concentration on the Mini Soccer sides at u7-u9 and then Youth Soccer U10
-U12. This season we will only have two youth sides at u13 and u14 age group. Both
will play their home games at The Parish Field. Alternate Saturday Mornings with
0930ko.
Playing at the Parish Field causes some issues and one of those is the lack of
suitable sized 21ft by 7ft - safe freestanding goals. An application for a funding
grant has been made and was due to be discussed at Westfield Parish Council
meeting on 2nd August. We hope it was successful.
Moving forward we hope WFC will be supported locally so we can continue
providing first class grassroots football opportunities to our children. We have
retained the FA Charter Standard club award and have applied for the last part of a
grant from the Footballing Foundation. We will continue to uphold the values and
standards our players and parents have become accustomed to during recent years.
Our activities for local children can be seen on our Facebook page at 'Westfield
Youth FC', they are also posted onto 'What’s On in Westfield' and other similar
pages to keep local people aware of the sporting activities being held. Most
activities are provided free of charge as run by volunteers who do not get paid. The
take up by new players is disappointing. We shall continue our efforts and
concentrate on local Schools at the start of the new school year for new players.
WFC is keen to get Businesses involved with the club through Sponsorship. There
are many ways to help from Sponsoring kits for an individual team, Sponsor a
Volunteer coach (New opportunity), make a donation towards the clubs expenses,
giving your time and expertise when needed. Local businesses such as The New Inn,
Webbes Restaurant and Woodbase Joiners Ltd have all sponsored our Youth sides.
We have also received invaluable help from local businesses when damage was
caused at The Parish Field and also to keep our Grounds Machinery working. This
support is amazing and really helps our volunteers and the club in general to
function on limited funds.
We are actively looking for a suitable person to be the club treasurer. A very
important responsible position on the club committee - If you think you could help
please contact gill.attewell@gmail.com
Lastly if you have any wish to become involved with the Football Club
adult or Youth please make contact with any club members, Committee
members or the Secretaries. We would welcome you all
with a cup of tea and lots to do.
Heath Moir WFC Youth Secretary, Charter Standard Club
Westfield Cricket Club ---Update Summer 2017
What a great first half of the season it has been for WCC with a lot of success on
the pitch and our inaugural CricketFest on 9th July which was a tremendous
success.
On the pitch - We had a positive first half of the season and we ended it in second
place in our Division by only losing one game and that was a rain affected affair which was
reduced to a T20 game; we were beaten by Kerala Strikers who then took over top spot in the
Division. East Sussex Cricket League are experimenting for the second half of this season by
playing the reverse fixtures as limited over cricket with each side having 40 overs to bat or bowl
instead of the normal timed game, so far we have played three limited over games all of which we
have won and one game was washed out!
It has been an all round team performance and there have been some excellent individual
performances. Both our young Indian players from Pestalozzi have returned home with only one
of them returning towards the end of the season, they have been delightful company and both
made big contributions to the team.
Our tour of Hampshire / Dorset was the usual fun affair and we finished second in both games but
the emphasis was on having fun and relaxing which was evidently the case.
The All Stars sessions have finished under the ECB however it has been so successful for
youngsters and parents alike that WCC have decided to adopt the All Stars as a permanent feature
in the club and we are continuing to run the Sunday sessions (10 am to 11 am) until the end of the
season which is great news so if you have young people between the ages of 5 and 8 years then
please come along and join in the fun.
The Colts section is really thriving with 25 young people now registered with WCC, between the
ages of 9 and 14 years, and having a great coaching and fun session every Monday evening
between 5 pm and 6 pm. We have registered four of our 13 year olds with the East Sussex Cricket
League which means they can play in senior cricket under supervision, this is a fantastic start for
our youth programme and is achieving what we were planning when setting up this group.
Both of these groups are under the expert coaching of Spud Page and the cost for both groups is
the same, it is £1 per annum for club membership and £2 per coaching session.
We have also been running lunchtime cricket sessions at Westfield School on Fridays which have
been well received and Sussex Cricket Foundation have been running an after school cricket club
supported by WCC. We have renewed our reciprocal agreement with Westfield School to develop
cricket at the school and the club which is very good news.
New Pavilion – I am pleased to report that we have received planning permission for this
development and the Cricket Pavilion Working Party are moving ahead with the next stages.
CricketFest2017 – As many of you will be aware WCC held our first cricket festival on Sunday
9th July and it was a resounding success with a lot of local residents enjoying, and participating, in
By the time most of you read this newsletter the bowls season outdoors will, sadly, be
almost over. We have enjoyed a mostly good summer and made the most of it when
bowling. By the end of August we will have played around 50 games against other sides
with about half of them at home. Add to this, our club competitions and that adds up to a
lot of wear on the bowls green. Thankfully our greenkeeper, Roger, with one or two
helpers have kept it in excellent condition despite adverse weather sometimes. We are
indeed fortunate and grateful when you hear of some of the travails other clubs over a
wide range of sports have.
On Bank Holiday Monday 28 August we have our annual tournament, an all day event
with 16 visiting teams from other clubs playing against each other for the President’s
Cup. Everyone is welcome to come and support their local Club. There will be Tea &
Cake, Raffle, Tombola all for club funds. Also, during the season we have been taking
part in our own Club Competition, the Finals are on Saturday 9 September 10:30am
(Sunday 10th if wet). All welcome to come and watch.
Members of the Bowls club were recently saddened to hear of the passing of “Rusty”
Miller who was a valued member some time ago. As always, our thoughts are with his
family.
Many Westfield residents are aware that on the death of a present or former bowls
member, the club flag is raised at half mast and repeated on the day of the funeral. After
the recent tragic loss of lives at Grenfell Tower, Manchester and London etc., the Club
committee felt it would be appropriate to raise our flag to half mast on behalf of, not just
us, but the whole village. However, this raised a few problems as people in the club
phoned and asked who in the club had died.
Thankfully a solution is at hand. As a result of a generous donation from a life member
of the club, in memory of her late husband, also a life member, the Bowls Club has
purchased a Union Jack flag. This we can use when a tragic event occurs and will be,
as mentioned before, on behalf of us all.
Most Wednesday and Friday afternoons we have roll up (practice) – if it is wet and no
match or after the end of the season on Wednesday afternoon 2.30 - 4pm we will meet
in the clubhouse for our popular chat and a cuppa cost £1.
our Zumba Gold classes continue in the clubhouse
Mondays 3 - 4 pm cost £4, again everyone is welcome.
Westfield Football Club
lthough the season has not started, numerous friendly games have
A taken place over the last few weeks.
This is a time the managers can trial out new players and get the team
spirit together. Results are really not too important, it is just the match fitness and
viewing new players.
The first team remains in the Southern Combination League Division 2 which is where
we’ll stay until our new ground is available. The ground issue remains our priority but
is out of our control and holding the club back. This season our aim must be a top 3
League position and a Cup [Runners up last season]
We have reduced our adult teams to just two instead of three. The Reserves are in the
East Sussex Division 1; there is the necessity to strengthen our reserve team. We
need these players to be available to play
May
Council held it’s Annual General Meeting, when Cllr Michael Edwards was re
-elected as Chairman, and Cllr Hamish Monro re-elected as Vice-Chairman.
Martin McNamara was co-opted as a Councillor for Westfield Ward.
Having reported concerns about the line painting at the zebra crossing and
bus stop, outside the school, Council was pleased to see them repainted in
May.
Repairs were carried out to the traverse stepper and litter bin in the
Recreation Ground. Unfortunately, the dinosaur springer at Churchfield was
vandalised, and provisions were made to have this repaired. This has now
been completed.
June
Council received a report about the Westfield Downs Project, from Roger
Carrier, which included confirmation that Matthew Homes have pulled out of
the purchase of the land. The current owners have retained a consultancy
firm, and will be applying for planning permission so that when a new
purchaser is found, the sale can proceed quickly. Council thanked Roger
Carrier for his efforts to date and hoped that he would remain as project
manager.
Council appointed an arboriculturist to carry out a tree survey of all the trees
in the village that are the Parish Council’s responsibility. This is due to be
completed in the next couple of weeks.
The inclusive roundabout, to be placed in the Recreation Ground, was
ordered. This is due to be fitted in August, and we hope the children will
enjoy this new addition to the playground.
July
It was agreed that there is a lack of play equipment in the village for older
children, and it was suggested that the addition of outdoor gym equipment
would be a good way of promoting exercise in the village and discouraging
acts of vandalism. In light of the delay to the Westfield Down project it was
suggested that some of the earmarked reserves, for the recreation facilities,
could be used to improve the facilities on the Parish Field. It was decided to
research equipment, and look at the possibility of securing funding for the
project.
Council discussed ideas for a poppy display in 2018, commemorating 100
years since the end of WW1. It is hoped that all the groups in the village will
make poppies to be displayed, most probably near the trees on Churchfield.
If you would like to make a poppy to be displayed, would like to volunteer to
help put up the display, or have some ideas you would like to share, we
would love to hear from you!
Rama was the most caring and loving person known to us all in the village.
He'd put a smile on anyone's face with his sense of humour and his
compassion to the customers. Rama was a great family man who loved his
wife, children and mother more than anyone. He will be missed by all. We
all loved him dearly. RIP Rama
It was with great sadness and shock we heard that Rama Patel, local shop
owner and friend to all, had sustained fatal head injuries as he was about
to take a bike ride on holiday in Dorset with his family. Rama was in a
coma in Southampton General Hospital for three days before he slipped
away. His cremation took place at Hastings on Friday 21 July when,
besides his wide circle of family and friends, many Westfield people
attended.
Everyone in Westfield Londis sends heartfelt thanks for all the love and support that has been
shown. A Book of Condolence is on the bar at The New Inn until 10 September for anyone who
wishes to write in Rama’s memory. One entry from Hamish Monro, Chairman of the WARR
Partnership, reads ‘Rama received a grant from the WARR Partnership as he was the perfect
recipient with the ideal business for the Leader Scheme. He transformed the village shop and
was the ideal shopkeeper - he will be greatly missed.’
Sam wrote: ‘to a lot of people a boss is just that, somebody who tells you what to do and pays
your wages; for me my boss was more than that - he was somebody I worked closely with for the
best part of 10 years, somebody I talked to about everything from the weather to family, someone
who I felt comfortable with, but mostly we bantered a lot and he made my working days not seem
like work or as he always used to say “you come here to socialise not work”. My boss, my friend I
am gonna miss you immensely. Rest in paradise Rama, Love Sam x’
Many comments were placed on Facebook ‘What’s on in Westfield’ page including: So sadly gone
from us all but never forgotten - a man who was so caring with a heart of gold - he brought me
through my time of need - a great sense of humour and a gentleman - will miss the little chats we
had in the shop - thoughts are with his Family - always loved my chats with Rama. The whole
village is so sad and shocked to say goodbye to a lovely member of our community.
Some years ago a grandmother took her grandson into the shop, Rama asked the boy’s name
and when stated, Rama was asked his. “Oh, I’ll remember that: ‘Bananarama’ ”.
Revd. Helen Patten’s Tribute to Rama
I have always thought that a local shop is a great blessing to a community, and that we should do
all we can to support it because ‘if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.’ In the hands of Rama and
Pragna our village shop has gone from strength to strength, and now has a wonderfully varied
stock. I visited the shop regularly with my guide-dog Ingle though, being completely without sight,
I was not able to wander round, choosing things for myself. Nevertheless, Rama was always
willing to help me, telling me what special offers were available in the shop, and serving me gladly,
cheerfully and kindly – nothing was ever too much trouble. I found out once that he loved mincepies
(whereas Pragna didn’t) so, each Christmas, it was my pleasure to take him a little box of
them, just for him to enjoy. Over the past months I have not been able to visit the shop, owing to
a severe back problem, but my husband tells me that Rama was always enquiring about my
health and, on one occasion, he took the time to come out to the car where I was sitting, just for a
friendly chat. He was a great asset to the village, and we shall miss him sadly. Let’s honour his
memory by supporting the village shop in every way we can.
