Westfield Community Association Newsletter
No. 167 February 2019
e are rapidly heading into Spring, with the early daffodils already on the
W verge at Churchfield and gardens, but we must acknowledge the huge
efforts put into Westfield over the Christmas season. Again, the infamous
Christmas Lights did not disappoint unlike the weather, with thanks to all those
residents who switch on providing a spectacular display for people to enjoy. A
big thank you to those who went out in the dark, cold and wet to collect
donations from the visitors for St Michael’s Hospice with this year’s figure
reaching another magnificent total of £8187.57 (see page 26).
Carols Round the Christmas Tree was on a fine night with a good turnout
enhanced by the Community Choir, with grateful thanks to Jean Tomsett for yet
again hosting this WCA event and making the delicious homemade soup;
mince pies were also available, thanks to Leah. It has become increasingly
difficult for Janice to drum up wind players each year but how pleased we are
for their accompaniment - many thanks to them, particularly Janice.
The Christmas Tree festival in the church was supported by individuals and
clubs, with thanks to Margaret for her coordination once again.
Looking forward, the WCA is not organising a Village Fete this year. Despite it
being an agenda item at meetings and in the last newsletter, no one has
volunteered to take on the organisation of this event. Other fund-raising
activities for the WCA are being considered.
Volunteers are desperately needed by many of our organisations to help, and
then take over from, those who have been ‘in post’ for so long. The Hub very
nearly went, see page 20, and if you play bowls, see page 40 - these are only a
couple of examples but you will see in these pages that the Lunch Club, Scouts,
Football, Tennis Club, Parish Council etc., all need bodies and preferably busy
people who can fit in a little bit of time for their community.
Comments are still made about Westfield being a friendly village, let’s keep it
that way.
Finally, on a personal note, my Christmas day saw the arrival of Arthur
Joseph Leslie Filsell to my Tim and Sarah, a brother for 2 year old
Tabitha - all determined to keep Grandma busy for a few years.
WESTFIELD GUIDES and BROWNIES
This is a joint report as both units worked together at the end of last year.
As the last newsletter showed, the girls had been very busy making and
displaying poppies for the village Armistice Centenary project. We were
all saddened when our display at the top of the main road was stolen. I
understand several people saw the first failed attempt when it had been
partly dislodged but sadly someone returned to complete the theft. Wire
cutters had been used as the fixings and top of the chicken wire were
still in place.
On a happier note the girls went on to decorate trees for the church
festival making all their own decorations then finished the term with a
Christmas party.
2019 saw the start of new and exciting changes for everyone in
Girlguiding. The meeting content and badges have all changed to make
the Organisation better and more fitting for girls today. In both units, new
members started the new programme with others joining as their present
timetable allows. Everyone will use the new programme from September.
We would welcome new members
in both units. Our meetings are on
Tuesdays in the Community Hall
Dining Room - term-time only.
Doctor’s Surgeries - Patient Involvement Group “PIG” – Update
We wrote last year and it’s time for an update.
Our full name is the Sedlescombe and Westfield - Patient Involvement Group – “PIG” for short.
We are a growing group of patient volunteers. We help the Surgeries to continue to get even better
at looking after the health of our communities by giving a patient perspective on service.
Feedback from our recent survey showed that an extremely large percentage of the patients who
responded, (a much higher percentage than similar surveys received), are very pleased with the
service. Many people also recognised that it is getting harder for the GPs and staff to achieve this
quality in these difficult times. (The full results of the survey are on our Surgery webpage, PIG
section, where you can also find notes of meetings, our statement of purpose and our PIG leaflet).
https://www.sedlescombeandwestfieldsurgeries.co.uk/pages/Patient-Involvement-Group---PIG
During the last year we identified a number of areas for development and are now working
together to build more relationships within our community and local organisations to get the best
possible picture of how services are developing.
Recent activities: The surgeries have recently begun to offer an even wider range of appointment
times, including at weekends and later in the evening.
We have helped identify some issues with buildings and access, provided information about
changes to Flu vaccinations, updated materials in waiting rooms and reviewed and updated
information on display screens. We supported patients with the new electronic “log in system”
which nearly everyone is confident to use now. This is saving a lot of time for Reception staff
who can now spend more time with patients who need to talk.
We look at changes that are being introduced in Health Services, nationally, regionally and
locally, talk about how they may affect us and discuss how we can support the staff to implement
and communicate these. We also meet with the area funding organisation (CCG), the hospital
Trust (ESHT), Rother Voluntary Action, Locality Link Workers and other professionals so we
know what is going on and can ask questions to ensure we get the best from them.
We regularly meet together with Doctors and staff and are also well connected to all the other
surgeries across our area.
New: Community Connectors are available for adults (16+), 2-3 hours a week at alternate
Surgeries. They provide active support for people with anxiety, depression and low mood if they
do not receive support elsewhere. They can also provide support on social and financial issues.
GPs refer patients to the Community Connectors and Patients may also be able to self-refer.
Connectors use coaching and behaviour change techniques to support people to improve their
health, confidence, independence and control.
New: Health Education Event – Organised by the PIG. Please see the advert elsewhere in this
newsletter and look out for more details locally. Admission is free and this presentation could
change your life! “ Avoiding Frailty in Older Age” - 17 April, starts at 6.30pm - Sedlescombe
Village Hall.
Get involved - Feedback from you is encouraged - The more information we get from our
fellow patients the more we can do. We have direct access to key Health organisations and can
readily pass on questions or issues. (We do not deal with complaints however, not that there are
many).
We have two groups, one meeting regularly every 6 weeks and a growing “virtual group” where
we keep in touch by email. Members of this group get information about what we are doing and
they can respond, raise questions and suggest agenda items. The opportunity to be more
practically involved, is also available.
If you are interested in finding out more pick up a leaflet in the surgery or leave a message for the
Surgery manager – Keith Newman, who will pass it on to us.
We look forward to hearing from you.
born without sight or severe visual impairment.
Eleven teams took part in the quiz held on 3 February in The New Inn, a
great evening with much hilarity raised a magnificent £440 towards Dan’s
Transport was the theme of the Orange Quiz Sheet No 11 which once again
provided annual entertainment and, hopefully enjoyment, over the festive
season. The judges toiled through the night to mark the answers and admire the
submitted cryptic clues. There were 17 perfect sets (out of 57 sheets returned
either on-line or by post), and on the basis of the tie-breakers, the first three
winners came from Tonbridge, Guernsey (!) and St Leonards, and 14 other
clever-clogs. A further prize was awarded for the best cryptic clue on all the
sheets - a superb clue that included computer buffery and French.
Question Nº 56 posed a problem to many: ‘clipper’ worked for ‘cut it out’ but
didn’t begin to explain ‘saintly sinner’; the answer was pirogue, the simple boat
hewn out of a tree trunk - pi= pious, saintly; rogue = sinner. For Nº 20,
‘skateboard’ didn’t really explain the ‘obsession’ part of the clue. Visit
www.hastingshastings.org.uk for the answers with explanations together with a
list of the tie-breakers submitted. Alternatively, the WCA Editor has a printed list.
Some people really got the bug and sent in further cryptic clues. Well done, but
we all ought to get out more!
Thanks to everyone who sold the Orange Quiz Sheets, including Patrick at The
New Inn; over £500 was raised from the sheets and additional donations.
The committee is currently focused on fund-raising events to provide better
sanitation and clean water in schools in our twin town of Hastings.
Westfield Horticultural Society
In November’s Newsletter, we were delighted with the continued
summer weather but we’re definitely in mid-winter now!
We had a fun end to
our 2018, with two
special Christmas
events: one in crafts
and the other making
a wreath or garland,
some of the fabulous
results in the photo.
Big News! A New Look Show Schedule!
Some of you may have already received your copy of our ‘new look’ Show Schedule and
Handbook. We hope you enjoy having a browse through and start planning what you
can enter into the Spring Show in early April. The Westfield Shows are incredibly
special with their variety and range of entries. Mark the date in your calendar and
whether you are entering (go for it!) or admiring the talents of others, make sure you
come along.
Although the Shows are at the heart of the Horticultural Society, there is so much more
with an activity or event almost every month and flower workshop evenings, there is
something for everyone and everyone is welcome.
Important News
This is the fourth year Catherine Collingwood has been our Chairman, but she will be
standing down at the AGM in October. The committee who plan and prepare for the
events are an enthusiastic bunch of people who meet together regularly. If you are
interested in joining the committee or would like to try it out for size, get in touch and
come along to one of the committee meetings and see what we get up to.
Whatever you are doing in 2019, make sure it is with WHS!
Forthcoming Events:
Our year begins with the popular Valentine Quiz on Saturday 16 February.
On Tuesday 19 March 7 pm at the Bowl’s Club, we have a speaker evening, with the
popular Jacqueline Aviolet, who will tell us about life behind the scenes at "The Nursery".
There will also be refreshments, home-made cakes and plants for sale from Jacqueline's
Nursery. Be sure to note the date, 19 March, and book early as space is limited!
And don't forget to start planning what you may be able to exhibit at our
Spring Show, on Saturday 6 April at the Community Hall.
WESTFIELD COMMUNITY HUB
at THE NEW INN between 10 am & noon FRIDAYS
There was an appeal in November’s newsletter for someone to step forward to prevent
the closure of the popular Hub on Friday mornings. Fortunately this was spotted and
acted upon, therefore:
Good, good news!!! WE HAVE A NEW CHAIRMAN
The Westfield HUB is to continue into the future and carry on as before.
The new chairman asks the residents of Westfield to use the facility as often as possible,
as the more people attending the better and, more often, the outings and events. There is
no charge to attend on Friday mornings and everyone is welcome. The HUB provides
an opportunity for socialising and enjoyment. It caters for all ages and is open every
Friday morning from 10.00 – 12 noon at The New Inn. Various games are played such
as ‘Play Your Cards Right’ and sometimes there’s a quiz, all for entertainment and
nothing is compulsory, just come, drink tea or coffee (at a special rate), eat cake and
meet people.
During 2019 we hope to extend the outings on offer and suggestions put forward by
members include:
Wakehurst Place - Kew gardens place in the country
Theatre visits - White Rock/Congress/Devonshire Park
Scotney Castle Gardens - Mrs Thatcher’s bolt hole when Prime Minister
Guided ocean liner tour - Dover Ocean Terminal
Romney, Hythe & Dungeness Railway
Visit to Television studios, Tunbridge Wells
War time tunnels in Margate
Guided walk around Westfield and its history
Date and destinations are yet to be fixed. We hope to offer one trip per month and then
take stock, see how things go. During autumn other trips may be offered such as a
pantomime and a Christmas trip to Brugge/Bruges.
Please come and join us on a Friday morning, it’s good fun and most enjoyable, you
never know who you may meet.
FINAL OPPORTUNITY -
CAN YOU BE OUR
NEW CORRESPONDENT?
Janice has been acting as the
Westfield Village Voice
Correspondent for the Rye and
Battle Observer for some time, but
a replacement is now needed,
otherwise there will no longer be
items from the village to let readers
know about events which they may
like to attend. Over the years very
few people have fulfilled this
weekly effort, but Westfield has
had quite a remarkable record of
consistency. In these days of
social media, there is still a place
for the written word and
newspapers, particularly amongst
the more aged population. It is
important for them to keep in touch
with the outside world.
A new Correspondent is needed
now! Janice is happy to explain
what is required, but essentially it
just needs someone to email the
Observer each week with village
information, which is made easier if
organisations tell you about their
activities. To keep Westfield on the
map please contact
janice.bolton@nonesuch.me.uk
From the Vicarage…… Electoral Roll
Every six years we must renew the Electoral Roll which is the membership list of our
Church. The next full revision is now due. The new General Data Protection
Regulations also require us to ask you if we can keep your personal contact information
and use it for our mission and pastoral care.
Whether you have been a part of our church for 6 months or 60+ years, or occasionally
join us, it is a privilege to worship alongside you and to work with you in the mission of
our church. We stand together on the verge of a very exciting future for our church as
we approach the 900th Anniversary of when the present building began and I hope that
you feel that this is worth being part of.
Being on the Electoral Roll has several important benefits:
On an official level, being on the Electoral Roll gives you the right to vote at our Annual
General Meeting, this year on Sunday morning 28 April at 10am.
Unofficially, and more importantly, being on the Electoral Roll is a declaration of your
desire to belong to our church family and partner with us in our church’s mission. It
therefore gives you a voice in shaping our priorities and enables you to support the
ministries of our church.
Giving consent for us to use your personal information will allow the leadership to
contact you to arrange a visit or to send you information such as upcoming events and
other information. You can of course unsubscribe at any time. We will always keep this
information safe and we will never share it with anyone or for any other purpose than
that which we have stated.
There are forms by the font in church which serve two specific purposes:
to invite you to join the membership of our church and join our Electoral Roll
to request consent from you to store and use your personal information to further
the mission and pastoral care of our church.
We hope that Westfield Church is a place of welcome and friendship, and we invite you
to join with us as we build up our church community and reach out to our village and
beyond with love in action.
Please return both forms to Susan Mulford at the Vicarage as soon as possible as we
need to have the new roll completed for the Annual General Meeting.
On a different note, some people have been asking about the Yew trees which lined the
church path. A few years ago the PCC noticed that some of the trees were diseased
and, after careful consideration, took the action to remove three of them in order to
preserve the rest. Unfortunately, the disease has spread and again, after consultation
with a tree specialist, we have removed the affected trees to try and preserve the two
which are by the church porch. Some I know are sad to see them go, but others are
pleased to see such space and openness at the front of the church. We are now looking
for ideas about what to replace them with, and to develop the wild flower conservation
area. The yew wood was recycled and used to make a path across the churchyard.
Finally, it will soon be Easter – yes, Easter eggs are in the shops already – so please join
us for a celebration of the Christian message at the Good Friday workshop, and services
for all ages on Easter Day.
Every blessing RevRob
hat a busy few weeks we had before
W Christmas. Nativities, carol concerts,
Christmas lunches and a staff pantomime. The
children were in fits of laughter at our Ugly
Sisters (Mr Jarvis and Mr Whincop), mesmerised
by Cinderella (Miss Dale), enthralled by Cinders’
wicked stepmother (Mrs Pocock) and blown away
with our singing sensation (Mrs Cook). It was a cavalcade of guest appearances too,
from Santa and Mrs Clause to a host of X(mas) Factor judges; Simon Cowell and Louis
Walsh. Thankfully, there was a happy ending and Cinders got her Prince Charming (Mr
Turner).
We returned to school on Thursday 3 rd January looking forward to the New Year and
refreshed from our break. The next two terms are longer than usual as Easter is late this
year; our topics this term range broadly from Fairy Tales to The Romans to Space and
Aliens to The Great Fire of London.
A whole week of scientific investigations kept us amazed during our Science Week.
Year 2 made their own bread and discovered the key role that yeast plays in making our
loaves light and airy. All the classes got to design and build transport systems from
recyclable objects in order to ship tomatoes from one side of the classroom to the other,
some designs being more successful than others. Indeed, the slower models had a hard
job to ‘ketchup’ with the faster ones!!
As part of our Religious Education, our celebrations for Chinese New Year took place at
the beginning of February. The school was daubed in Chinese decorations, lanterns and
dragons and many classes tried out Chinese food and delicacies. We even enjoyed a
special themed lunch from our school kitchen on Chinese New Year Day. Every child
made a wish for the New Year which was
written on red wish cards and displayed
on the fences around the playground
throughout the day.
Easter will round off Term 4 and our Year
3 & 4 classes will be performing an Easter
concert at Westfield Church on Tuesday
2 nd April at 6pm. Please come along and
join us for an evening of sweet song and
celebrations.
Richard’s Ramblings
TEN THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR ON THE ROADS
A Light Hearted Look at Today's Driving
1) Landrover: Intended for use by farmers and landowners. Usually followed by clouds of
smoke. Is riveted together. Generally available in olive green but now turns up in several
more cheerful colours. Has a certain "Cult" following. Can be found outside village pubs
and usually contains a sheepdog and maybe a loaded 12 bore shotgun. Rarely seen
where they should be, in farmers fields.
2) Landrover Discovery: An upmarket version of the above. Is usually spotless inside
and out. Capable of insane speeds but is never seen off road in fact is never driven
anywhere near a muddy verge. Can often be found unattended on the yellow zig-zag
markings outside schools or on double yellow lines. Quite often seen on the hard
shoulder, immobile due to electrical problems.
3) Ford Focus: A mass produced car which can be found just about anywhere. Some
models are getting quite old so are within the financial reach of younger, faster people.
4) BMW: Keep well clear of anything wearing the BMW badge. They are quick, quiet and
seem not to be fitted with indicators. They have a bad reputation, being the preferred
transport for those dealing in illegal substances. Keep an eye on the mirror for one
finished in stealth grey. It may be a police car.
5) Audi: Avoid these as if the devil himself were driving. Most Audi drivers consider their
car to be a weapon rather than a means of transport.
If you see a blur in the outside lane of any motorway, its an Audi.
6) Datsun (Pick up truck): Not many left on the UK's roads. Mostly now to be found in
any middle-east conflict zone, well overloaded with AK47 wielding terrorists firing their
weapons in any direction.
7) Maserati of any model: Jeremy Clarkson's car possibly.
8) Marked Police Car by Vauxhall or Ford: Usually has a reasonable turn of speed for
an adapted family saloon and unless driven by a PCSO is often driven in accordance
with the Highway Code. Avoid exceeding the speed limit with one of these visible in the
mirror.
9) Marked and Unmarked Traffic Patrol Cars:
These are actually driven by some of the best
drivers on the roads but they are after your
licence so when you see or suspect one keep
a low profile.
10) Bus or Coach: Very big but slow. The
driver generally knows what he or she is
doing but has a time limit between stops and
must keep to it. These vehicles are capable
of doing enormous damage to your car or
bike so keep at least half a mile away from
them if possible; the bus driver will have
many witnesses.
No offence intended.
All the best. Richard
Westfield Football Club
From our Chairman..
January has been a really improved month for the club on and off the
pitch; there have been some brilliant results for all the sides, optimised by
the first team winning 3-2 away to league leaders Angmering Seniors late
in the month.
The club has had some good news regarding the Downs project;
hopefully a buyer has been found and puts the plan into action sooner
rather than later. We also are hopeful of a new clubhouse at the Parish
Field for the community, this would be a real village hub and everyone is
working hard to secure this for the future.
We are always on the look out for sponsors and volunteers, the club
requires a certain amount to run and at present the funds are tightening;
sponsorship can come in many forms and anyone with ideas or would like
to sponsor the club please drop me an email at
Westfield Youth FC
The youth side of the club have three teams in the local Rother
Youth League and their games are usually played on Saturday
mornings.
Our fabulous U7 side is headed by Andy Ball with the assistance of the
players’ parents and they play at Mill Lane Youth Pitch. Games are 20 mins
each way with 5v5 format in 12x6ft goals. We have 9 signed on players and
the team is going from strength to strength. On the last weekend in January,
the team played away from home and beat a local popular Football Club side
2-4. That team had previously been unbeaten this season! What an
achievement from the whole team with goals scored by Cm x3 and Rocco x1,
with Cm and Louie voted Players of the match. As a brand new team their
achievements this season are already remarkable.
Our u14 side is now headed by Andy Golding and has been doing well sitting
fourth in the league. They have played 10 games; won 7, drawn 2 and lost 1 -
their only loss to our biggest competitor Eastbourne Borough, a club with
massive resources and loads of quality players to choose from! Last season
this u14 Westfield team got through to and won the Cup competition for their
age group. This season they were beaten at the end of January by Borough
in the semi final - the team showed great character with players out and
others suffering injuries but still showing up to play - the opposition was just
too strong. Two great goals from Will A and Jake J.
Finally our u15 side, headed by Paul Hobden, has played 10 games this
season. They have won 1 against Hastings Rangers Red, winning 4-2 at
home. What a great result. Now this may not seem great but the team has
been unlucky in a number of fixtures, scoring goals in most games and
showing improvement from last season. There are some strong teams in the
league but our boys get out there, in all weathers, at the Parish Field and play
for each other as a team. I for one admire their spirit - Great job boys.
Thanks to local support we have a floodlit area at Mill Lane for evening
training sessions during the darker months.
We have a WCA donation to create a club website which we will start work on
shortly.
The club also wants to start a new u7 team this summer ready for the new
season in September 2019. If you have a child that will be 6yrs old on 1/9/19
get in touch. There is more good news from the Chairman on page 34.
Preparing the pitch costs the club approximately £2500 annually, an extra
£1800 was invested last summer - that is money the Parish Council doesn’t
have to spend maintaining the public space. (And it’s free for our residents to
use most of the time). Please respect our volunteers’ efforts, clean up after
your dog and put litter in the bins provided. Don’t forget children also play on
the pitch and surrounding areas.
PRE‐VICTORIAN CRICKET
AT WESTFIELD.
Many may be surprised to learn that cricket
was played at Westield Down as early as
1790. There are some interesting statistics
about early games to be gleaned from a
book called “Pre‐Victorian Sussex Cricket”
by H.P. & F.P. Squires. In fact Westield
seems to have been a very popular choice
for many important matches.
In those days there were no mechanical
mowers, the ideal cricket pitch had to be
naturally well drained, with short grass,
conditions suitable for sheep to crop and
keep the grass under control.
Communications were not easy as
nowadays, and it is reasonable to suppose
that matches were arranged where teams
would be fairly sure that the venue chosen
would be playable.
At Westield there rarely has been any
doubt that the game will take place, as long
as the weather is ine during the hours of
play. The ground has remarkable natural
drainage. Neighbouring cricket grounds
during a wet spell, lood easily, but the
sponge‐like turf of Westield Down has
soaked up the rain to the delight of
cricketers for nearly two centuries.
Recorded Matches:
In 1790 ‐ Sept 23rd at Westield Down ‐ HASTINGS, GUESTLING & TENTERDEN V.
BEXHILL, BATTLE, SEDLESCOMBE, NORTHIAM & ROLVENDEN.
1796 ‐ Sept 7th at Westield Down ‐ TENTERDEN V. EAST SUSSEX.
1799 Aug ? At Westield Down ‐ 3 of RYE V. 3 of WESTFIELD.
1823 ‐ Jul 17th ‐ at Westield Down ‐ WESTFIELD & EAST SUSSEX V.
SALEHURST, VINEHALL & HURST GREEN.
1823 ‐ Aug 14th at Westield Down ‐ BENENDEN CLUB V. SUSSEX.
It is interesting to speculate whether the standard of cricket was the same, and whether
they had any of the cliff hanger inishes often experienced at Westield in recent years;
perhaps sometimes a ghostly cricketer raises his old‐fashioned bat in acknowledgment of
the applause greeting a present day century. (Matches were advertised in the “Sussex
Weekly Advertiser”).
(The Editor in 1978 added ‐ ‘In 1784
the Court of King’s Bench ruled cricket
as a Legal Sport. The M.C.C. revised the
rules in 1788’).
Hello Westfield.
We recently attended a seminar with the UK branch
of the All Japan Martial Arts Federation (AJMAF).
Our members were able to have a go at practising
various martial arts including several types of Jujitsu,
Japanese sword and, of course, Goju Karate.
Perhaps the most entertaining part of the day was
being taken through gun disarms by an ex UK forces and Goshin Ju-Jitsu
instructor who had recently run similar courses for the FBI.
The AJMAF held its Annual General Meeting after the seminar at which Chris,
one of our Chief Instructors, was made UK secretary.
Our links to other associations means that there are regular opportunities for
our members to attend training courses in a wide range of different martial arts
across the UK and wider afield.
Westfield Cricket Club Update January 2019
Happy New Year to all residents:
Although it is a quiet time on the playing front, it is still busy on the administration
front with preparations for the coming season, including league registration and
arranging fixtures*, as well as the continued development work on the ground
and pavilion.
The pavilion project continues with applications applying for grants already
lodged with various funders. The next stage will be the increase in the size of the
boundary, starting about March; this entails the removal of the remaining tree
roots, then applying a layer of top soil which will then be levelled and seeded.
This is an important development which will not only allow more use of the
square for cricket but will give a bigger area for events such as CricketFest and,
hopefully, use by the Youth Club.
At our AGM in November, with the exception of the role of Treasurer, all of the
committee members were re-elected for a further year which is really positive
and gives the club continuity at such an important time in our development.
Joanna Johnson was elected Treasurer and is a welcome addition to the
committee, I am sure she will have a full role to play in the future of the club.
Peter Baker and Darren Corke were re-appointed as Captain and Vice-Captain
of our 1 st X1 respectively and Patrick Edwards and Bhavik Patel were appointed
as Captain and Vice-Captain of our 2 nd X1 respectively.
For administration reasons we had to appoint Trustees for the club for the first
time and I am very pleased to say that Kaz Nanji, Jason Miller and Nicholas
Johnson have agreed to take on these roles and were duly appointed.
Good luck to all of our new officers and to the continuing officers
please keep up the good work.
As mentioned earlier it is a quiet time on the playing front; however
we have players taking part in an indoor league and cup at Horntye
so not everybody is having a break! We also have members who
are on coaching and umpiring courses so good luck to players and
students.
We are always looking for new members - players and people to get involved
generally; do please come along and join a friendly progressive club. Contact the
officers mentioned below, any of our committee members or just come along at
the start of ground working in March and make yourself known.
Westfield Tennis Club
Members continue to play, weather permitting, throughout the
winter at our designated times, mainly on Sunday mornings and
Thursday afternoons. Individuals also arrange games at other club
times. The AGM is in February when tournament dates for the year
will be decided.
We are pleased to have renewed our lease with the Parish Council for another
ten years. Some of us will still be able to play for that length of time but welcome
new faces for the club's future. We welcome increased access to the courts for
tennis by the public and hope some may like to join us, particularly for our
tournaments.
Club's use of the courts: Tuesday noon to dusk; Wednesday 9.00am till noon;
Thursday 9.00 till six; Sunday 9.00am till 1.00 pm.
The Westfield Parish Council Newsletter
Compiled by the clerk to the Council, Kate Darbyshire.
A brief summary of Council business conducted since
November and forthcoming events and projects.
Full minutes are on the website
http://www.westfieldvillage.co.uk/council-papers
Community First Responders (CFR)
Last month we received the good news that South East Coast Ambulance
Service (SECAmb) have opened the recruitment window once again for
Community First Responders in Westfield. Council set aside £1800 in
reserves a few years ago to cover the cost of training a responder for
Westfield. The role is a very challenging but rewarding one, responding to
emergency calls in conjunction with SECAmb as well as raising funds for
the scheme and raising awareness of CPR and Public Access Defibrillators.
SECAmb had an extraordinary level of interest from the Westfield
community for this role and invited those interested to a CFR information
evening in January. Following this, they have four people who are now
moving towards the formal application stage and if successful it is expected
that at least one will have completed their training by the summer. SECAmb
and the Parish Council are currently looking at additional funding options for
this project.
Precept and budget for 2018-19
In December Council approved the budget and agreed to increase the
precept to £38,500. This is an increase of £2,500 (6.94%) from last year.
This will equate to £34.41 per annum for Band D Council tax payers, which
is an increase of just £0.06 per week. This slight increase will allow for the
election costs in May, a new Local Action Plan, new noticeboards, whilst
building up reserves for other large planned projects. You can view the
budget for 2019/20 on-line: www.westfieldvillage.co.uk/
Grants and Donations
Each year Council allocates an amount of money for the support of
community groups and projects that benefit its parishioners. This financial
year Council have awarded grants and donations to: St John’s PCC for
churchyard maintenance, Battle Area Community Transport (BACT), Rye
Harbour Nature Reserve, Royal British Legion, Victim Support and
Westfield Bowls Club. Applications are welcome at any time. If you would
like an application form please contact the Clerk. You can view Council’s
Grants Policy on the website for guidance:
Ongoing projects

Window on Westfield
The K6 telephone box at Churchfield is red again! Council are
currently looking at options for reglazing the box, and it is hoped that
this work will be completed in the next couple of months.
There was a delay in repairing the footpath between the Tennis
Courts and Recreation Ground, but the work should have been
completed by the time of publication.
We are currently getting quotes together for the installation of new
outdoor gym equipment on the Parish Field and the children’s play
area will be improved at the same time. Hopefully work should start
in the spring.
The Cricket Club continue to work hard raising funds for the new
Cricket Pavilion and improving the Cricket Ground.
The land at Westfield Down was on the open market with planning
permissions in place last year, and is currently ‘Under Offer’. We
hope to see further progress on the site in the forthcoming months.
Future Projects
Council are currently looking at the possibility of creating an allweather
track in the Recreation Ground. This will be for small
children using their scooters and bikes etc. A working group has
been put together to include non-Council members and Council will
be considering options in the forthcoming months.
Anyone for tennis?
Council have successfully negotiated the terms of a new 10-year lease
with Westfield Tennis Club. The public will now have access to the courts
on Sunday afternoons and Thursday evenings, in addition to the normal
times they can use the courts. You can hire the courts for just £2 per hour.
The key is available, on payment of the court fee, from Londis Village
Store. Enquiries phone 01424 756973. You can also view when the courts
are available and book your session in advance on-line:
Footpath reinstated at last!
Council were delighted to see the footpath along the A28 from Ripleys on
Westfield Lane to Church Lane reinstated before Christmas. East Sussex
Highways did a great job of clearing the path, which was long overdue,
and people are now able to once again fully utilise this very popular
footpath.
From your County and District Councillor:
On 5 February, East Sussex County Councillors agreed the Budget for
the year ahead - 2019/20. The budget allocates £375m to public services
in East Sussex, with savings of just over £5 million, and an increase in
council tax of just under 3 per cent - which is about eighty pence a week
for a Band D household. The savings required in the budget were
significantly less than first anticipated due to the success of sustained
lobbying of central Government. As a result, additional one off funds
were secured in a number of areas, including social care. East Sussex
was also selected to be a business rate pilot during 2019-20 which will
bring in £4.3m funding to the county area, including an estimated
£1.6m for ESCC.
I am pleased to be able to report that the derelict Moorhurst site and
land behind Greenacres will be marketed by ESCC following on from a
site visit by myself and the Leader of ESCC. The footpath from Ripleys
to Church Lane (A28) has now been properly restored.
Wearing my Rother "hat" I was delighted to be able to support Westfield
Parish Council in their aspirations for new equipment for the parish
field. The Rother contribution which came from the Community Grant
Fund was £15,000. I am also continuing to support the cricket club in
their efforts to gain external funding for the new pavilion.
