Westfield Community Association Newsletter
No. 166 November 2018
As this newsletter goes to print Westfield is covered in poppies made by people
of all ages; what a splendid display, which also shows the huge amount of talent
around, for Remembrance tide and the Armistice Centenary. This was a
Westfield Parish Council project and a souvenir leaflet accompanies this
newsletter for those who didn’t keep their own record or were too far away to
visit. With thanks to Kate Darbyshire, 1066 Photography, for all her hard work
with the event and supplying the photos, I have produced the four page leaflet
as a keepsake; extra copies are available. Thanks also to Rez of Digital Image
Solutions for his contribution in printing the leaflet, and indeed all the
newsletters.
The door-to-door collection for the annual Poppy Appeal has taken place but if
anyone wishes to donate further to the work of the Royal British Legion, there is
a permanent collection box in The New Inn or contact me.
Within a few days Christmas lights will be putting Westfield on the map once
again. It is unfortunate that due to health and safety, crowd control and traffic
etc. the switch on cannot be an event for the public. A great deal of hard work
goes into preparing the displays which give such pleasure to locals and visitors
throughout December; donations are for St Michael’s Hospice.
Within these pages I hope you will find items of interest and dates to write on
your calendars and diaries. Once again, I thank the volunteers - about 50 of
you - who put this newsletter through your letter box four times a year, in all
weathers. Volunteers play such a large part in our lives but if everyone does a
little bit, it makes it enjoyable for all; perhaps a
New Year resolution for 2019.
If you’ve finished with
this newsletter, please
recycle by taking it to
any of Westfield’s shops
for others to read
Best wishes, Merry Christmas and
a happy, peaceful New Year
Liam Walsh, Westield resident and former Claverham College pupil, entered the
poem below into an international poetry, art and song competition “Never Such
Innocence” as part of the school’s educational project to mark the four years of
centenary of WW1. Liam won second place and has been invited to a presentation
event at Buckingham Palace hosted by Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence in
November.
In The Dark
As the light of the grey day faded to leave,
only total darkness,
the snow began to fall so thick you’d freeze,
until the lamps,
were lit with matches held by shaking fingers,
illuminating dull,
the trenches filled with near-dead ringers.
The eve was cold, t’was as if a cloak,
laid by the north and south,
had stifled all life,
but left the hoax,
that life still existed in the devil’s mouth.
No man should be made to wade through mud,
snow and swathes of bodies rotten,
no man should suffer the lack of life’s bud,
but these men knew hell,
their comforts forgotten,
they followed the orders of generals on high,
‘for King and Country’ was the supposed reason,
to fight against humans,
their very own kind,
for to do anything else would be considered treason.
These men, who knew the secret hell,
did not question.
The cyclic blast of shell after shell,
seemed to herald a bastion.
These men carried their equipment and weapons,
but these were naught compared to the burden,
of their duty, they knew it ended in Heaven,
the place which they’d earned in service for certain.
As for the light faded dim,
they knew their fate was sealed,
yet they accepted the fact, however grim,
and pushed on through the battlefield.
As the light of day faded low,
they waited for the mark,
when they heard the whistle blow,
they greeted death as a friend in the dark.
1 ST WESTFIELD SCOUT GROUP
ll the sections have settled back after the summer break.
A I am pleased to say that the Scout troop has opened again and
they have been enjoying activities outside as much as possible,
especially the Crazy Golf in Hastings. They joined up with the Cubs for a wide game at
the Quarry, Fairlight for a really fun evening.
The Cubs have been working towards the Road Safety badge.
The Beavers had a First Aid and Emergency evening, thanks to Nigel Hammond, where
they learnt to deal with all sorts of scenarios. They also have been outside on a hike and
learning the Green Cross Code.
All the sections have been making various poppies to make
displays to be included in the village commemoration of the end of
World War 1. The photo shows the Beavers’ poppy, one of the
first to be placed, heralding the large number which followed
throughout Westfield.
The Group will, as always, take part in the Remembrance Service
at the Church after parading through the village. We are having
evenings allocated to discuss the subject and make the
youngsters aware of what we are remembering.
We really need more adult help, especially another Leader for the Beaver Section,
children aged 6 to 8, and a Leader for Cubs, children aged 8 to 10 or adults who can
help in any section. Please contact Jan on 01424 552190 for more details.
A few vacancies exist in the Cub Pack and there will soon be some in the Beaver colony
so if your son or daughter would like to try us out contact Jan on the number above.
We are sorry that the proposed Jumble Sale for 20 October had to be cancelled due to
Leaders being away and lack of helpers on the day. We hope to arrange another sale
for early in 2019.
WESTFIELD COMMUNITY HUB
at THE NEW INN
between 10 am & Noon FRIDAYs
nhappy news from Westfield Community Hub this quarter.
U As many people know, and at the risk of being boring or repetitive,
Westfield Community Hub was set up after a Local Action Plan back in 2005
and a Spotlight on Westfield event in 2007 indicated that more than 400 local
people wanted somewhere warm and welcoming to meet for a coffee and a
chat and an information access point.
Although a group of volunteers was set up, it wasn’t possible to meet the
requirement until Andy and Lynn (formerly of the Old Courthouse) agreed that
their pub could be used for a couple of hours on a Friday morning. That was
about ten years ago, and the Hub, as it was decided to call it, has been going
strong ever since – although it’s had to change venue a couple of times (to The
Plough and then to The New Inn).
The volunteers distinctive (loud!) canary yellow polo shirts have become a
regular feature at many local fundraising and charity events and attendees can
attest to theatre shows, river trips, dog racing, coach journeys and competitions
(and some rather nice meals). Several computer and camera usage courses
seem a long time ago but were a useful activity and visits from various
organisations have definitely been appreciated.
Although we’ve had to say goodbye to many attendees over the years it’s nice
to note that, although new faces are regularly added, many of the 30 or more
residents who still attend most weeks have supported the Hub throughout its
existence.
The committee has changed over the years but four of the original members
have continued to enjoy experiencing the development and changes in form
and function that have had to be accommodated. At the AGM in October last
year though, new volunteers were requested, partly so that organisation tasks
could be re-distributed and partly to encourage new ideas. At the AGM this
October it was advised that despite impassioned pleas, no one has come
forward to take over from Sharron, who had announced she would be stepping
down. Luckily, there are still volunteers continuing to help The Hub to limp on
until Christmas with a limited remit and altered constitution, which gives a bit of
time to sort closure activities (or a chance for someone else to pick it up -
pleeeeeeez).
The only good news is that, provided it remains viable for him, Patrick has
agreed to continue to open The New Inn for tea, coffee and cake on Friday
mornings after Christmas, and is happy to leave the bookshelf and jigsaws in
the corner, but obviously on his own terms.
So, as noted last quarter, if you’re looking for a local group to put your
stamp on, please do come forward now.
Fia Kent
Hey lovely people There have been a
number of fund-raising events for Friends
of Fia over the last few months and we
realised that a huge fundraising update
was in order! We are so very grateful for
all your fundraising, kindness and support!
On 22 October we had the pleasure of
receiving a cheque for a fantastic £400!,
from the lovely All Saints Wives
Fellowship. Back in July at Fia’s Festival
the final total raised was a humongous
£2921.00! The Music by the Lake, a
Senlac Rotary event from which we
received a part of the profits, thanks to Pat
and Judy Connor for hosting this on a day
which was not as dry as all the other days
in August; we had an amazing time there,
dancing in the torrential rain!!!! Fia's
Philly Challenge has raised an awesome
£382.35 and is nearly complete - currently
arranging for Fia to walk the last 100yds,
which conveniently is the distance from
her front door to The New Inn!!!! Also, the Harvest Barn Dance, with fewer people
than the one in March, made a wonderful £257. Thank you doesn’t come close. We are
so grateful.
As many of you know Fia suffers from such a very rare condition and this money will
be going on future trips to Philadelphia. This is where the experts are tirelessly
researching more and more into this horrid disease to try and find ways of curing it and
slowing the degenerative symptoms down. Another trip is very important to help Fia
and other children who are suffering from Alexander Disease.
As we mentioned in our update twelve months ago, it was
necessary for us to convert our house when it became clear that
Fia’s condition meant she couldn’t go upstairs. We now have a
ground floor bedroom and wet room; these recent funds mean
we can now finish this for her and have a fully functioning
family home where Fia can be mobile. Many pieces of
equipment are needed to support Fia too – a recent purchase
being a special chair so she can literally access a desk at school.
Also some of the pennies raised went to create memories with our very precious little
girl, allowing us on a few occasions to try and forget that this illness is life limiting.
The whole family enjoyed an amazing time at Pepper Pig World; this was so very much
needed in the summer when for a few moments we were just a normal family. Your
support, love and generosity is so very much appreciated thank you, thank you, thank
you. Lots of love Lian and Matt xx
Westfield Village Rocks
WVR had a busy summer when there were a lot of rocks painted, then placed and more
found in abundance.
A first for WVR was a rock marriage proposal! - did Julie find it?
- what was the reply?!
Rock painting was popular at the annual
was lovely to meet fellow members and
new.
We will continue to be busy with Hallowe’en, taking part
in the Remembrance display and Christmas themed
Adopt a rescue cat and be their hero!
The RSPCA Bluebell Ridge Cat Rehoming Centre in
Hastings has up to 60 cats and kittens looking for new
homes. Adopting from the RSPCA is one of the best
and most responsible ways to bring an animal into
your home. Every cat at our centre is given a health
check, blood test, inoculations, microchipping and
neutering where necessary.
Every year we help to rescue and rehome over 200
cats in Hastings and Rother and also neuter many cats and dogs to prevent suffering.
Bluebell Ridge is owned and operated by the Sussex East & Hastings Branch of the
RSPCA but it is a separate charity within the national body and self-funded. Each year
we have to raise over £150,000 to keep the centre open and we rely heavily on the
generosity of local individuals, businesses and groups.
To find out more, please visit our centre which is open every day, except Thursdays,
from 11am until 3pm at Chowns Hill, just off The Ridge in Hastings.
Also join us at our Christmas Fun Day at the centre on Sunday 2 December from 11am
for festive stalls and games.
Richard’s Ramblings …. Continued from page 17
One evening, early in October, we were in the kitchen having tea. It must have been
about 5pm or slightly later. From outside suddenly there was a burst of automatic gunfire.
This was followed by a few single shots from a different weapon. Then a car screeched
to a stop outside our cottage. Dad had gone outside on hearing the noise. Through the
window I saw two burley men and dad assisting Mr Churchill up the steps and into our
house. They sat him down in an armchair. One of the men, who had a revolver, left the
house with dad leaving the other man to keep watch on Mr Churchill. Mum gave them
both a cup of tea and a piece of cake. Mr Churchill seemed to be enjoying the whole
thing. It was quite some time before dad and the other man returned. One of them put
some bright shiny bullet cases on the table and they told Mr Churchill that there was no
sign of the gunman whatsoever. Dad told Mr Churchill that he would arrange for an
armed escort to take him home and increase security at "Chartwell". The Great Man got
up and said to dad: "When a man with decorations such as yours says that he will do
something, I know that he will do it, and do it well".
My own call up was deferred. I had managed to secure a job with a local builder
however the army claimed me in 1947. I served in Palestine. The incident with Mr
Churchill faded in my memory as these things do.
***********************************************************************
Going through dad's things recently I found his notebook. Opening it at the appropriate
page I read the following entry in dad's writing:
"Suspect description: Male, white, approx 5'8 to 5'10, dark hair swept over forehead.
Toothbrush moustache. Dark clothing. Shouted "Death to Churchill" in German while
firing weapon. No trace of suspect or weapon. No injuries to any person. Minor damage
to car."
Underneath was written in red ink: "None of the above to be made public. This is to be
classified as a "Top Secret" incident. This book to be destroyed after seven years. No
other written record to be made." This annotation was not in dad's writing but was signed
by a high ranking Military Intelligence official.
************************************************************************************************
The description as given by Mr Churchill, his bodyguard and his driver was that of Adolf
Hitler but he had died by his own hand in Berlin some months previously. Could there
have been a mistake? There were later rumours that Hitler had not died but fled to South
America. Could he have managed to get to England first in an attempt to kill Mr
Churchill? Maybe there was some other explanation. You decide.
And what about the attempt to hush the
whole thing up? The endorsement in dad's
notebook does not mean much because a
Police Officer is a Crown servant and cannot
be given orders by a military officer. Any
such order should have come from a Police
Officer of higher rank. Any attempt on the life
of the wartime leader would have made
headline news but for some reason the
incident was never made public. Did the
authorities too doubt the death of Hitler?
Sadly, we will never know.
Best wishes and Happy Christmas.
WHEN CHURCHILL CAME TO TEA
B
efore the war I was living in a small village in Kent. We played in the streets,
being free of traffic most of the time except for a big Humber saloon car which
came through the village quite often. It contained a couple of large men, one of
whom always smiled and waved at us. He usually had a long cigar in his hand. My dad
who was the village policeman, told me that it was Mr Winston Churchill who lived not far
away in a house named "Chartwell".
Dad rejoined the army at the outbreak of war. He had previously served for a few years
in "The Royal West Surreys" and spent five years in Hong Kong. I followed the progress
of the war on a world map which was pinned to my bedroom wall and I kept a diary of
where we though dad to be, keeping in mind that censorship denied us knowing his
exact whereabouts. The papers gave us news of Mr Churchill throughout the war. His
speeches were always rousing and we tried to hear them on the wireless.
Dad came home late in 1945 and resumed as the village policeman. He didn't have
much to say about his experiences while in the army but it was with a sense of pride that
mum sewed the bright medal ribbons on his uniform. I had to look one up in a book; it
was the Military Medal. I wondered what you had to do to get one. I was now 17 and
awaiting my own "Call Up".
chool reopened for a new
S academic year midweek on
5 September when we greeted
many new faces - twenty-nine
children in our Reception class and two
teachers: Mr Rogers in Year 3 and Miss
Mitchell in Year 5.
The first term has just flown by and we settled into our new routines with the
children enjoying all the fast-paced activities that autumn brings: blustery winds,
conker collecting and harvest celebrations. Our varied topics this term include
Ancient Egyptians, WWII, 1066 Battle of Hastings, Super Human and Blue
Planet plus school trips to Newhaven Fort and Battle Abbey to look forward to.
We were very pleased to be part of the village WW1 commemorations. We
welcomed Kate Darbyshire into all our classes for creative workshops and each
class has produced some amazing artwork for the remembrance exhibitions
including Poppies for the roadside installation, finger paintings, collages and
more. We hope everyone enjoyed the displays and exhibitions over the
remembrance period.
Many of our Key Stage 2 children have been
taking part in swimming lessons, football, and
netball clubs and a few of our quickest runners
from Years 5 & 6 have been selected to
compete in local cross country running
competitions.
As we are now into Term 2, thoughts are
turning to the ever-nearing festive season.
Don’t forget to come to our Christmas Fayre -
see box.
Our Key Stage 1 classes are working on the
annual Nativity play to be performed to
parents and guardians on 4 & 5 December.
Our Reception class children will be putting on their own Christmas tableau
performance at the end of the term. Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a
good carol service and our Years 5 & 6 pupils are tuning their voices for
concerts at Whitegates Retirement Home and Westfield Church in the last few
We have come to the end of our first term
back after the summer holidays. All the
children have settled in well and have been very busy with lots of fun, making the most of
the gardens and the lovely Autumn weather. There has been lots of investigating going
on, such as weighing conkers and natural items found on the children’s walks, carving
pumpkins and sticky coloured pasta with spiders.
The children enjoyed making different kinds of Poppies for the ‘Westfield Remembers’
exhibition.
This term is going to be a messy one with lots of glittery firework pictures and Christmas
activities. We will be practising our Christmas songs ready for our Christmas sing-along
for parents and friends on Monday 10 December, we are hoping there will be a special
visit from Father Christmas at the children’s party.
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us with the
From the Vicarage…… ‘Follow The Star’
How quickly the year has passed and here we are again
in the season of Christmas. It’s a time for family,
wonderful food, the giving and receiving of presents and,
of course, lights, especially our amazing lights in
Westfield which draw so many people from far and wide.
The lights guide people to our lovely village and we hope
some will Follow The Star to our historic church.
‘Follow The Star’ is the title of the Church of England’s
initiative to remind people of the Christmas story and
help us to reconnect with it this year. Our Archbishops
Justin Welby and John Sentamu write: “Mary and Joseph
and all those caught up in the Christmas Story were
surprised by the astonishing way God chose to live
among us.” They refer not to a royal palace as you
would expect of the king of kings but in a poor and dirty
stable surrounded by animals.
They continue “Wherever you are this Christmas you are invited to Follow The Star and
to be with Jesus. Each Christmas we are reminded of God’s longing to surprise us with
his gift of joy, love and new life. It’s the greatest present we can receive and share with
others!”
To encourage us to think more about who is at the heart of Christmas, the Church of
England has produced a booklet called ‘Follow the Star’, a journey through the 12 days
of Christmas; copies will be available in church and you are most welcome to take one.
In the busy Christmas schedule, I hope you will have time for rest and reflection and time
to mull over the Christmas story again. Please do come and join us for many of the
varied Services and activities on offer for those of all ages.
This year we continue the tradition of showing a
Family Film, introducing ‘Messy Christmas’, our Tree
Festival on the theme of peace, holding the second
Village Nativity’ as well as the usual Carol Service,
Christingles and Christmas Eve and Day services.
Look us up on Facebook and our website for more
details.
We look forward to seeing you over this busy time,
WCA SENIORS TEA PARTY
On Saturday 13 October over 60 Senior members of the community came to the
Community Hall for the annual tea party. The tables were decorated with brightly
coloured table cloths and serviees. Everyone had a hand painted pot containing a
posy of autumn flowers and foliage to take home, thanks to Cheryl for all her hard
work.
A delicious tradional aernoon tea was enjoyed comprising a selecon of
sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and cake, beauful sponges in various
flavours. Thanks to Philippa for the superb catering.
Aer tea the “icing on the cake” was
the entertainment provided by
Graham Pont, well known to many of
the residents who sang a selecon of
well known and popular songs,
culminang in
many people
enjoying a jive.
Thank you
Graham.
The Organisers, Philippa,
Cheryl and Rose, would like to
thank all those that helped on
the day and especially our two
young people, Josh and Bethany Dine, who worked relessly with
the tea and coffee pot. It was nice to see the young serving the elders.
This is a free event, courtesy of the WCA, and has now been a regular on the calendar
since 2012. Hopefully many more to come.
Westfield excelled itself once
again with a magnificent
display of community
cooperation with poppies.
Made from a variety of
materials, poppies popped
up through the village and
were greatly admired by
residents and passers-by.
Those who watched The
Battle of the Somme shown
on Saturday evening found it
a very poignant and moving
reminder of World War One
only 100 years ago. Current
Westfield residents had
submitted names of their
relatives to The Wall of
Westfield Horticultural Society
Sadly we said goodbye to one of our Life Members. Bey Barre was a member of the
commiee alongside her husband, Bert, for many years and each took their turn as Chairperson
as they worked incredibly hard to resurrect the society’s popularity in the village when it had
fallen to near obscurity.
Bey entered floral art classes but was parcularly known for her delicious cakes and baking;
more recently Bey’s friendly face was behind the raffle table at our shows alongside Carol
Paige. She died a few days aer the Autumn Show and the day aer her 93rd birthday.
Members of the WHS commiee aended her funeral on 9 October at Hasngs Crem.
What a fabulous start to the Autumn! We’ve been so lucky to have the
continued warm weather and to see all the plants having a late revival
from the heat of the Summer. We certainly enjoyed a golden Autumn visit
to RHS Wisley in October. Long may it last!
What a wonderful display of all things Horticultural at this year’s Autumn
Show. We were amazed that our gardeners had managed to produce
such high quality products, despite the challenges of the Summer weather. Well done to
all the winners, and particularly James Hillier, who won the prestigious RHS Banksian
Medal for the most points in the Horticultural classes, and Nicky Briscall who won the
Gwen Smith cup for Best Floral Art arrangement.
The winner of the Junior Cup was Zoe Winch, aged 11, for best exhibit in the Junior
entries. Well done to all those who won, some entering for the first time, details below.
The WHS has had a very interesting and productive year, offering an activity or event
each month of the year, all of which have been very successful. We have also planted
bulbs for the Parish Council, helped with the Harvest Festival and with the
Remembrance activities. There is always a lot going on in Westfield and the WHS takes
part in lots of things. If you would like to become a member or if you are a member and
would like to join in wider activities in the village please get in touch.
Annual General Meeting on17 October: Our apologies to all our members for the
confusion of the dates this year. There was an error on our Show Schedule events
page, which gave the wrong date. We hope no-one was inconvenienced by this, or
thought we were trying to hog all the cheese and wine that evening.
James Easthope stepped down from his role as treasurer and the Chairman thanked
him for all his hard work in the 3 years he has held this role. Melanye Richmond kindly
agreed to step into James’s shoes. The committee were pleased to welcome Amanda
Brown and Claudia Blunden as new committee members. Catherine Collingwood was
re-elected as Chairman but advised that she intends to step down next year and so we
will be on the lookout for a new Chairman. Anyone interested in joining the lively WHS
committee, do get in touch.
Forthcoming events:
The current Flower and Craft workshops will be coming to an end by the time you read
this article, but we hope to start another course of 5 classes in the New Year. Anyone
wanting to join these increasingly popular classes, please ring Nicky Briscall to book a
place or for more information: 07774 750721.
There will be a special craft evening on Tuesday 27 November @ £10 and our festive
Flower Class evening, making a floral garland, is on Tuesday 11 December £15; places
for both events are limited and need to be booked: please contact Nicky 07774 750721.
On Tuesday 13 November 7pm at the Bowls Club and open to everyone though space is
limited. Local historian, Ian Everest, is the speaker on the "Women's Land Army" to
coincide with the village’s support of Remembrance week.
My story ~ Dan Stratford
Every so often you come across people who inspire you to better
yourself, question yourself and realign your perceptions.
When you meet children who are born without sight from birth but lead
happy fulfilling lives, without the slightest sign of barriers or worry, it
makes the woes in one's own life, pale into insignificance!
MACS (Microphthalmia, Anophthalmia & Coloboma Support, Registered charity number
1161897) is a very small charity which strives to make the lives of children and teens
born without sight or severe visual impairment better.
I will be setting out to raise £2000 for this amazing charity by running not only a number
of half marathons and fund raising events but topping it all off by running (probably
walking as well) the London Marathon!!!
I would be incredibly grateful for any donations, big or small to go towards the final total.
Many thanks to those who have already donated.
WESTFIELD GUIDES and BROWNIES
fter their busy summer term the Guides have had a
A quiet autumn making poppies for displays in the church
hall and joining with the Brownies with the installations for the village signs.
We have welcomed 3 new members though still have room for more.
In November we take part in the Remembrance Sunday parade and service in
Westfield and attend the annual Scout Show at the White Rock Theatre.
We are looking at ways to recruit new members from years 6 and 7 from Westfield,
Brede and the surrounding area. Our meetings are on Tuesdays 7 - 8 pm in the
Community Hall, Dining Room - termtime only
Contact Sally on 01424 754927 or 0784 050 6426 for details.
The outdoor summer season gave the girls the chance to
complete their Seasons badge and the good weather in
September and October has seen them out in the school
grounds every meeting before settling down to make poppies. Each girl has
shown their skills cutting, gluing, stitching or knotting so hopefully you saw their
displays around two village notice signs.
We all went to a Woodland Fun Day on 14 October to a camp site
at Picketts Wood in Nutley. The girls had the chance to cook on
wood fires, follow trails in the wood, complete the climbing course,
make craft items from natural bits collected in the wood and meet
a group of owls.
We would still like to welcome new members for our meetings on
Tuesdays from 5.15 - 6.45, for further information contact
Sally on 01424 754927 or 0784 050 6426
PLEASE HELP US TO PROVIDE THE FACILITIES
AND SERVICES YOUR COMMUNITY NEEDS
Hands of Hope is a newly formed community-based charity operating in Rother, Hastings and West
Kent. Our aim is to reconnect people with where their food comes from, teaching them how to grow and
cook healthy, nutritious food and using this process to ultimately tackle some of the biggest health and social
issues facing us in the 21 st century including Childhood Obesity, Rural Isolation, Loneliness, Dementia and
Mental Health. Our aim is to improve health and well-being as well as community cohesion, whilst
protecting our environmental heritage.
We have recently acquired a derelict walled kitchen garden
and 18 adjoining acres in Hawkhurst, Kent, (see right) which
will be restored, regenerated & developed as an innovative
“Community Hub” for the whole region. This is an exciting
project that will produce organic fruit and vegetables within the
restored 2 acre walled kitchen garden and including a
Victorian Glass House, a Cooking School and Training room.
As well as a valuable education resource centre, the site will support community projects and workshops,
employment engagement activities, volunteering and community events.
This new facility will be:
A place to grow

A place to learn e.g. schools projects, growing programmes, cookery club,
workshops/events, sustainable gardening, healthy eating, etc
A place for nature e.g. wild areas, biodiversity, bees, pond, wildflower meadow
A place for children – Schools projects, nature play, forest school,
A place for specialist groups focusing on loneliness, mental health, dementia,
A place to access fresh affordable in season and organic produce
A place to feel connected e.g. welcoming, inclusive, a sense of community,
vibrancy and energy where there is always something happening
A place to connect with each other and with nature
A place that is sustainable offering a valuable legacy to future generations
A range of programmes and services will be developed following a period of consultation with local
communities. We will work in close collaboration with established organisations with a track record of
excellent provision and we envisage some of our priorities will be in tackling Childhood Obesity, Isolation /
Loneliness, Dementia and Mental Health and we are now reaching out to the communities of Rother,
Hastings and West Kent to obtain your views concerning the types of facilities and services you would like to
see at the site as well as your opinions regarding the most pressing current needs.
We are also interested in establishing links with Community & Voluntary Groups, Health & Social Care
Organisations, Schools, Parents, Corporate and Local Businesses who would be interested in contributing to
the consultation and perhaps involvement in our project.
We have designed a short survey that takes no longer than 10 minutes to complete and can be
accessed at: https://tinyurl.com/hoh-survey-1
The survey is completely anonymous and for those that prefer, we can send a hard copy in the post.
We are very keen to receive your views, opinions and suggestions and we would be delighted to
hear from you.
he Autumn weather was very kind to us this year. In late September a
Westfield Youth FC
The new youth football season is well underway as we head into the
colder & darker months.
Our three youth teams all play in the Rother Youth League which has
teams from Eastbourne in the West to Goudhurst and Tonbridge to the North and Rye
in the East.
Our new u7 side has been together since late August but are progressing well. With
new players joining there are still 2-3 spaces. If your child wishes to play locally and is
aged u7 at 31/8/18 or attains the age of 6 before the end of the season get in contact.
U7 home matches are played at our amazing Mill Lane Pitch on alternative Saturday
mornings. Pop in if you are passing to see this great bunch of players.
Our u14's have had a good start to the season with several wins and a draw. Parent
volunteer Andy G completed his CRC and Level 1 FA coaching qualification this month.
Great job! Andy will gradually take primary responsibility for the u14 team. The u14 do
have a couple of spaces (yr 9) if your child is looking.
(I don't think Westfield is unique but we find it really challenging to keep the older age
groups (13-17yrs) engaged and committed to their football development as other
interests start taking over).
Our u15's are doing well this year with lots of new players. Their determination to
overcome last season's results is starting to show on the pitch and they will get what
they deserve soon.
Both the u14/15 play on the main Parish field - so if you are passing, pop along and
see how the teams are getting on.
So to your club - yes it is your club, member or not WYFC is here to primarily provide
association football opportunities for our children. But we’re finding it really difficult to
make ends meet, without the ongoing support from our local sponsors, donations and
volunteers giving their time it might be impossible to continue. Our need to change
approach and priorities is evident on our balance sheet.
Recently I have been successful in getting a massive £400 donation from the WCA to
enable us to create, hosting and manage a club website. This will cover the direct costs
for 2yrs and is being provided at a very reduced rate.
(westfieldfcwebmaster@gmail.com)
What will it provide? The possibilities are endless, but it will be a News, results and
contact hub. There will be resources from the FA Charter Standard, safeguarding and
advice articles. We will have a club committee section, chairman's blog plus all our
sponsors will benefit from direct links to their business websites. We will add local links
to important service providers and local clubs, WCA & Parish Council to name just a
few. I would like to thank all the WCA committee for supporting us.
Don't forget to contact us if you want to get involved, have a child or group of children
that are looking to join a team, can help the club as a volunteer or by sponsorship.
Westfield Cricket Club Winter Update (2018)
League Matches: The 2018 season was, as predicted, a challenging one for both league
teams. The 1st X1, playing a higher grade of cricket due to last season’s success, finished
5th - there were only 18 points between us and the third placed team which shows how
competitive this division was. The 2nd X1 were always going to find things difficult being
new to league cricket and a new adventure for WCC; they finished 6th in their division but
enjoyed the challenge and, unlike other teams in their division, fulfilled all of their fixtures.
Well done to both teams for playing some good cricket and promoting Westfield.
Personnel: The Colts who played for the adult teams have developed their skills and
have made a big contribution to the 2nd X1 so well done to all of them, I am sure they will
continue to develop to become the nucleus of future WCC teams.
We are reviewing our Colts programme for 2019 as this season’s evening sessions have
been disappointing because of fewer numbers than last year, if you know any young
people who would be interested in joining this group then please contact one of the names
below or any other committee member.
Sunday Cricket: The newly named Westfield/Sedlescombe Sunday Friendly X1 team is
settling down; it is hoped that this will develop alongside our other teams.
Indoor Cricket: Another exciting development for WCC this year (there have been so
many of them!) we have entered a team in the Eastern Area Cricket Association (EACA)
indoor winter league which is played at Horntye. The first game was a steep learning
curve and we came second however the learning paid off and we won that game so well
done to Patrick and his team.
Social: We had the pleasure of hosting Westfield Youth Club in June, July, August and
their annual Fun Day on 2nd Sept which was another day of fun for all who attended.
Our annual awards and dinner took place on Saturday 20 October at The New Inn, as
ever it was a good evening with thanks to Patrick and his excellent staff for hosting the
event. The award winners were :-
1st X1 - most runs Peter Baker, best batting average Darren Corke
most wickets Graham Corke, best bowling average Nathan Burgess
most catches Peter Baker, player’s player Steve Cornford
2nd X1 - most runs Steve Barker, best batting average Rory Hunt
most wickets Stewart Fellows, best bowling average Rory Hunt
most catches Jason Miller, player’s player Patrick Edwards
Friendly Matches - most runs Peter Baker, most wickets Steve Cornford
Clubman of the Year - a joint award to Patrick Edwards and Ian Taylor
Bouquet Presentation - to Angie Taylor for scoring at all 1st X1 games plus friendlies,
some 2nd X1 games plus providing cakes for every home game.
Pavilion: The tendering process to build the new pavilion has been finalised with Parker
& Son selected as the main contractor; grant applications are under way to fund this
important and exciting development so please watch out for updates - if you have money
burning a hole in your pockets or purses then all contributions will be gratefully accepted.
Ground: Work is under way to expand the outfield, unfortunately this has meant the
felling of some trees so that we can level off the ground and grass it over. Once the new
pavilion is built the old pavilion will be taken down and the ground incorporated in to the
expanded outfield with additional trees planted to complete the line of trees. This
development is necessary to allow the club to play at a higher level in coming years and it
is hoped that we will be able to attract more touring teams.
The Westfield Parish Council Newsletter
Compiled by the clerk to the Council, Kate Darbyshire. A brief
summary of Council business conducted since August and
forthcoming events and projects. Full minutes are on the
website http://www.westfieldvillage.co.uk/council-papers
Bulb Planting
October saw a round of bulb planting. Six
hundred native bulbs were bought by the
Council, including snowdrops, snake’s
head fritillary, wild daffodils and tulips.
The Horticultural Society kindly planted
some around the fingerpost and the Tree
Conservation Volunteers (TCV), headed
up by Cllr Tim Hills, planted the rest at the
top of Workhouse Lane, bottom of Cottage
Lane, Churchfield and opposite Church Place Farm on Westfield Lane.
They also managed to clear the brambles and overgrowth around four of the
‘Westfield’ signs coming into the village.
Poppy Making Workshops
This year to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War I, the Parish
Council organised a display of poppies throughout the village inviting residents
and community groups to get involved. In September we held a Community
Poppy Making workshop in the Bowls Club. Many thanks to the Bowls Club for
hosting us and thank you to all the volunteers who came along on the day. We
had a good mix of ages and a very productive afternoon of painting, sewing,
knitting, crocheting, gluing, tea drinking and cake eating!
I was invited by the Head Teacher of Westfield Primary School to go into the
school and run workshops with each of the classes. I started each class with a
discussion about the symbolism of the poppy and why it is important to
remember World War I. The children were very enthusiastic about the project
and worked hard, persevering with some tricky tasks. Their creations are
wonderful and a very welcome addition to the display.
Poppy Display
At the end of October we put out all the poppies that people had kindly made.
We had previously applied for a grant of ‘There But Not There Silhouettes’ from
The Armistice Covenant Fund. These were placed in various positions within
the parish. Toby Walsh and his team of volunteers once again did a wonderful
job of getting the war memorial ready for Remembrance Day and also placed a
silhouette by the memorial. Lots of hard work went into the display and there is
a long list of people to thank including: The Women’s Institute, Horticultural
Society, Playgroup, Youth Club, Cubs, Beavers, Scouts, Brownies, Guides and
Woodbase. Thank you to everyone who made poppies, contributed materials,
helped with setting up and the team at the New Inn for being a drop off point!
Autumn Village Tidy
On 13th October we held another successful
village tidy. Thank you to the 35+ volunteers
who turned up on a beautiful day to help. This
time we introduced a game of ‘Community
Rubbish Bingo’ which seemed to be a hit.
There was a three-way tie for the most random
thing collected: fridge door, sleeping bag and
ride on toy?! All the rubbish was separated into
recycling and general waste with one resident
even managing to organise a trip to the tip on the day. We would also like to thank the
residents who do ‘their bit’ with daily and weekly litter picks, it really is appreciated!
Parish Council Surgery
In October The Hub welcomed me to hold a ‘Council Surgery’ as part of their coffee
morning. I was joined by three Councillors and it was a good opportunity to give
residents more information about the work of the Council, listen to what their concerns
are and find out what matters most to them about their community. If you would like to
hold a Surgery at your community group, then please let us know.
Other News
In August the finger post at the junction of Bluemans Lane and Parsonage Lane was
reinstated. In September we carried out minor repairs to the bin at Churchfield and the
bus shelters on Main Road and Westfield Lane had a much needed clean. Various tree
works have been carried out including: removal of tree stump from Churchfield, lower
branches removed from trees in the Recreation Ground and root removal from the wire
fencing in the Recreation Ground.
Ongoing projects
We are continuing to work on the new leases for the Cricket and Tennis Clubs. Grant
applications are being submitted for the new Cricket Pavilion and work is still ongoing
with the telephone box at Churchfield. Quotes are being sought to repair the footpath
between the Tennis Courts and Recreation Ground; this work should be carried out by
the end of November. We also received the good news that Rother District Council has
approved our community fund matching grant for £15,000 for new play/gym equipment
on the Parish Field. Watch this space!
Local Action Plan
Over the last couple of months Council have discussed the need to carry out a new
extensive resident’s survey, with a view to producing a new Local Action Plan (LAP).
The last full survey took place in 2005 with the last update to the current LAP being in
2011. Council have set a budget to carry out the survey and will create a new LAP
after the next elections.
Elections May 2019
The next round of elections for Parish Councillors will take place on 2nd May 2019.
Please ensure you are registered to vote in order to have your say.
Could you spare a couple of hours a week to serve your community? Council usually
meets on the first Wednesday of the month. If you are interested in current affairs,
think you could represent the residents of Westfield and would be interested in
becoming a Councillor, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact our
Clerk, Kate Darbyshire who can provide further information on the role of Councillor.
Westfield Councillor Report:
write this in the days following the recent Budget. Local councils were pleased to
I hear that the siren call for more funding in the most challenging areas of adult social
care, children and roads were addressed in part. This is only a one year settlement and
does NOT bridge the funding gap but it is a clear demonstration that government is
listening and it will make a positive impact on residents of the county.
Our lobbying has been relentless and will continue; I can reassure residents that Amber
Rudd MP is very aware of the significant challenges that lie ahead for both ESCC and
Rother.
On a more local level I was pleased that at Rother we were able to support the parish
council’s application for grant funding of £15000 from Rother towards the installation
of new equipment on the Parish Field. We continue to work with the cricket club in
their aspirations for improvement to their facilities too. I am clear that Rother’s
Community Grants Fund has achieved a lot in assisting parishes to enable projects to
progress and I will ensure that our village continues to get its share by supporting
projects going forward!
Finally, you will recall that last year Rother stepped in and paid for four of the six grass
cuts that ESCC previously funded. This amounted to £42000 across the district and
specifically £1500 for Westfield. Whilst we said that this would be for one year only I
am sympathetic to consideration of the matter for 2019 too. I have asked that an agenda
paper be taken to Rother’s December Cabinet meeting.
‘Westfield Remembers’ WWI exhibition
On the weekend 3 rd and 4 th November the Exhibition was on display in the
Church Hall. We would like to thank the Working Party who worked very hard in
putting together this wonderful commemoration of those who served; in
particular, thanks go to Ruth and Ben Carter of Westfield History who worked
tirelessly to make the exhibition happen. Thanks to Pauline Filsell-Page for
organising the refreshments and drumming up volunteers. On the Saturday
evening there was a good turnout for a film showing of the acclaimed 1916 film
of the Battle of the Somme, on loan from the Imperial War Museum. Greene
King donated a keg of their commemorative beer to the event. About £225 from
the evening was added to all donations received throughout the weekend which
will be given to the local branch of the Royal British Legion. The display was
moved to the Church throughout the week from Monday 5 th November until
Armistice Day.
Thanks should also be expressed to Pauline for stepping in at the last minute to
organise the Poppy Appeal for Westfield, find collectors and order the wreaths.
