The compelling, graphic style
1
beloved Cincinnati artist Charley
Harper dubbed “minimal realism”
is on impressive display in the series
of 18 murals called Beguiled by the
Wild, painted on all sides of the old
City Barn near the Cincinnati Zoo
& Botanical Garden. Once you’ve
seen them as artwork, look for all
of the animals represented living
in the zoo. ©2014 ArtWorks,
that’s the centerpiece of The Queen
Shares, a love letter to the city and
a warm welcome to visitors. The
crown symbolizes the Queen City, as
Cincinnati has long been known, and
the cardinal and bluebird perched on
top are the state birds of Ohio and
Kentucky. A group of local poets contributed
Legendary sharpshooter and
4
Ohio native Annie Oakley is
depicted with her rifle in the sevenfoot-tall
mural Little Sure Shot (a
name bestowed on her by Chief
Sitting Bull). Her surgical precision
with a gun is well-documented: She
could shoot a cigarette out of her
husband’s mouth and the thin edge
of a playing card from 30 paces.
Lesser known? The time she spent in
the Oakley neighborhood is thought
to have inspired her stage name.
Before he was a famous
5
cartoonist for two prominent
New York newspapers, Winsor
McCay worked in Cincinnati—drawing
a comic strip for the Cincinnati
Enquirer and painting posters and
wall advertisements. Today, McCay’s
work comes full circle as it’s featured
on the façade of a downtown building
in Little Nemo in Slumberland, his
most well-known comic strip. ©2016
