Where? Calverley Park Crescent, a
dreamy 1830s Decimus Burton terrace
built in elegant grey stone, is one of the
most sought-after locations in Tunbridge
Wells. Looking onto the private communal
landscaped garden and over to Calverley
Park and beyond, it’s a wonderfully tranquil
spot, yet right in the middle of town, seven
minutes’ walk from the station, with its
excellent services to Cannon Street (47
minutes) and Charing Cross (one hour)
and even closer to the cultural, retail and
culinary delights of the Royal Borough.
What? The Grade II listed house is
entered via the colonnaded terrace which
sweeps along the front of the crescent,
with private parking outside. The ground
floor comprises the kitchen and adjoining
dining room, plus laundry, store and
cellar. On the upper ground there’s a
sitting room and study. The first floor
has two bedrooms, with the front one
opening onto a large balcony looking over
the gardens. The top floor has another
attached Grade II listed part-Georgian
property, with later additions. Situated
well back from the road, on lovely treelined
Tenterden High Street, with its
excellent mix of independent and upper
tier shops, cafes and restaurants. Waitrose
is a stroll away. There’s no station, but
it’s 30 minutes to Ashford’s high-speed
London link, fifteen to Headcorn, from
where it’s an hour to Charing Cross.
What? A well-balanced mix of
period charm and modern touches,
the ground floor is arranged with a
study leading into a sitting room and
adjoining dining area and then on to the
long kitchen which gives onto a lovely
vaulted garden room, leading to the partwalled,
enclosed garden. Upstairs there
are three bedrooms on the first floor,
with a family bathroom, with a master
suite on the top floor. Handily for a
town house, there is a separate garage.
Where? Ockman House is one of those
houses you walk past sighing right in the
centre of Rye, one of the prettiest towns in
the whole country, with a vibrant cultural
(pedestrian street) handy for everything,
five minutes’ walk from the station with
high speed links to St Pancras, via Ashford
International, with wonderful views over
the saltmarshes and River Rother. Camber
Sands is under 15 minutes’ drive.
