We interview designer Bianca Astle about her latest Ivy Blu
accessory to its status as a high fashion commodity.
For an update on hair styles, we talk to Alex Wirz-Dunbar,
On Trend
We love Zoe Karssen’s new range, stocked
at Seletti Concept Store in Queenstown.
The Amsterdam-based fashion house
designs easy-to-wear tops and bottoms with
expressive graphics. The look: a mixture
of rock ’n’ roll aesthetics with pop culture
references.
On The Move
Best known and loved for designs that effortlessly embody
youthful elegance and adventurous charm, New Zealand-based
store RUBY is the latest tenant to confirm a move to The
Crossing. Opening mid-September on Market Lane, the store will
comprise of two brands: RUBY, under the direction of designer
Deanna Didovich; and Liam, which is headed by designer Emily
Miller-Sharma. We are especially loving Liam’s new season
range, as featured. The collections always deliver refined and
sophisticated separates.

BIANCA
ASTLE
of Ivy Blu
The inspiration behind my
flagship store is to offer a place
in which I can have every single style
available. I decided to open a flagship
store in Christchurch after closing
the Auckland store, which was very
difficult to manage remotely. This
way I can see what’s going on, I can
meet my customers and offer oneon-one
styling.
My favourite piece from the
new collection would have to
be the Kitty Dress in our signature
print Secret Garden. I love strapless
dresses but this one has a sleeve
so you feel a little more covered
up. The print is on a beautiful pink/
peach background and suits most
skin tones.
My most treasured possession?
My nine pairs of Stuart Weitzman
boots. I couldn’t live without them!
The first thing I do in the
morning is let my five-month-old
English bulldog out before I start my
day with a herbal tea.
As a designer I’m motivated
by what my customers are telling
me – I ask them lots of questions; it’s
important I listen to them and get
it right.
My most recent extravagant
purchase? Hmm, where do I start?
Perhaps my Stuart Weitzman boots?
I think I need to stop now!
My dream holiday destination
would be the Greek Islands. I’ve
hinted so many times to my husband
but I’m still waiting to go... maybe
next year!
Top of my playlist right now
would be – I cant believe I’m
saying this out loud, but – my
daughter loves [British girl group]
Little Mix. We listen to it together
every day on the way to school,
so Little Mix is right up there!
The piece of advice I would
give my younger self would
be: stay positive. Even when life
throws you the biggest curveball,
stay positive; things always pan out
in the end.

WELL-
HEELED
Victoria Tait follows the rise of high
heels from a practical menswear item
to high fashion commodity.
Joan Crawford inspects her shoe closet. Photo Getty Images

STYLE | fashion 11
The high heel dates as far back as the 1400s,
when prostitutes in Venice would wear what
were then known as chopines, to stand taller
and look more imposing than their rivals. The
shoes reached heights up to 18 inches. The
later invention of heeled riding boots increased
the mass popularity of heels within both male
and female fashion, although they were then
predominantly worn by men and the heel of a
practical and sturdy design.
These simple heels soon evolved into more
stylised heels that became thinner and higher
during the mid-1500s. Catherine de Medici is
said to have made high heels fashionable and
functional for women, due to her marriage to
a rather tall Duke of Orleans (who became the
King of France).
The petite Catherine de Medici felt somewhat
insecure next to the Duke’s favourite mistress,
Diane de Poitiers. A pair of two-inch heels
remedied this, giving her a more notable physique
and adding a sultry sway to her walk. The appeal
of these heels caught on quickly, with the elegant
footwear soon associated with wealth and
privilege.
Mary Tudor was another royal who pursued
heels for height, however, Queen Elizabeth I was
documented as the first wearer of European high
heels, in a painting from 1595.
Fashionable heels were popular for both sexes
by 1590, and a person who had authority or
wealth was often referred to as “well-heeled”. By
1790 men had entirely stopped wearing the heel
and it became a symbol of femininity.
Shoe Facts
• Marilyn Monroe was said to shave a quarter-inch
off one of her stilettos so she walked with a wiggle.
• Imelda Marcos is one of the world’s most famous
shoe collectors. The former First Lady of the
Philippines owned 1200 pairs.
• There is fashion folklore surrounding the Christian
Louboutin red soles. According to The New Yorker,
the red soles were inspired by Andy Warhol’s
drawing Flowers. In 1993, Louboutin designed a
shoe using the drawing as inspiration, however,
when the prototype of the shoe arrived, he felt like
something was missing. At this point, he looked
around and saw an assistant painting her nails with
a bright red polish. He grabbed her nail polish and
painted it all over the black sole of the shoe – and
so, the red sole was born.
• King Louis XIV of France was known for starting
many fashion trends. From his early 20s until he
was at least 63 years old, Louis XIV had his heels
covered in red Moroccan leather or painted that
colour. Maybe this is where Christian Louboutin
got his inspiration from?
12 STYLE | fashion
• Altocalciphilia is the condition of having a high heel
fetish. Carrie Bradshaw was definitely afflicted.
• Over 80 craftsmen will touch one pair of Stuart
Weitzman heels during the six to seven weeks of
production. Perfection takes time.
• Even World War II didn’t stop women wearing
high heels. Designers simply turned to materials
that weren’t rationed, including wood, straw and
snakeskin, to create high-heeled masterpieces.
• Jimmy Choo has been referenced in top-of-thechart
songs by Hilary Duff, Shyne, Pitbull, Clipse,
Sway, 50 Cent, and Chester French.
• The Guinness World Record for most people
running in high-heeled shoes is 155.
• The stiletto heel was invented by Christian Dior’s
shoe designer Roger Vivier in 1954. He created a
slender plastic heel of incredible strength that he
referred to as “the needle”.
• The world’s most expensive shoes are Harry
Winston’s “Ruby Slippers”, featuring 1350
carats of rubies to celebrate The Wizard of Oz’s
50th anniversary, and Stuart Weitzman’s “Rita
Hayworth” satin heels complete with sapphires,
diamonds and rubies, and worn by Rita in
Shawshank Redemption. Both pairs are valued at
USD$3 million.
MAKING
WAVES
Opening her own salon seemed the
natural choice for globe-trotting
hair stylist Alex Wirz-Dunbar.
Victoria Tait speaks with her about
the latest trends, and her excitement
to be working in Christchurch.
I understand you have a background in high fashion
– can you tell me about the publications and people
you’ve worked with?
When I was in the USA and UK, I had the privilege of working
with many talented individuals from the television and publications
industries. Some notable works include: Vogue, W Magazine, New
York Times style section, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, America’s Next
Top Model (season 4), NYC Fashion Week, and styling Hollywood
babes like Emmy Rossum. I also worked on daytime television
favourite Katie Couric’s hair for ABC’s coverage of the Queen’s
Diamond Jubilee, and had the honour of working and training
alongside Oribe, the namesake of a very luxurious brand of hair
products that we carry at Chère Chérie.
What was your inspiration behind Chère Chérie?
We wanted to offer a luxurious hair experience to the people of
Christchurch, and to create an environment for a dedicated team
to flourish.
What is one of the biggest hair trends emerging for
spring/summer?
The shag and mullet are back in a big way. I foresee this will
translate to softer, more layered looks. It’s a nod to the glamorous
’70s but with a modern, polished vibe. We can all start embracing
a bit more of our natural texture and stop fighting it.
What are your views on sustainability and
environmental products and responsibilities within the
hair industry?
We take our environmental impact very seriously and we are
doing what we can to limit that impact. We compost our food
waste and hair clippings, and we use low-energy lighting. We are
building up our stock of salon plants to help purify the air and to
add a little more greenery to our environment. We use and carry
Davines hair products, which are created with ingredients sourced
from biodiversity farms and are also carbon neutral. We offer
clients the option of re-filling their shampoos and conditioners, to
help reduce our use of plastics. Every bit helps!
What’s your biggest fashion addiction?
Definitely lipstick and jeans!
POLISH
and perfect your look
Dr Frost from Face Value gives us all the
information we need to know for three of their
most popular non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

34 STYLE | fashion
1.
Twenty years ago, a face lift was the only way to get rid of
wrinkly, sagging skin. Today, thanks to the invention of Botox
therapy, dermal fillers, and skin rejuvenation techniques, there
is a much less painful and time-consuming way to give you the
results you desire. All of these procedures can take years off
the face – and can be done during your lunch hour, with no
invasive surgery and little recovery time.
BOTOX THERAPY
Description of the treatment:
Botox /Dysport is a natural purified protein that temporarily
relaxes the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. It is most
commonly used to soften frown lines, crow’s feet and
forehead lines and prevent them from deepening. Both men
and women benefit from this safe and effective treatment.
When administered by an experienced practitioner, you will
retain natural expression, without risk of that “frozen” look.
Procedure:
After consent and education, the actual treatment is relatively
quick – around 10 minutes. There is no downtime at all.
Tiny doses are injected into the area being treated. There is
minimal pain, with most clients experiencing a stinging that
passes immediately.
Outcome:
It takes three to four days to see results, with the full effects
appearing after 14 days. You will still have positive facial
expression and will look generally refreshed with softening of
wrinkles and lines in the treated area. On average, lasts
four months.
Cost:
Face Value charges $18/unit of Botox, $6 for Dysport, with
the average cost of the frown area $360.

DERMAL FILLERS
Description of the treatment:
Dermal fillers are clear gels made from hyaluranon, a natural
carbohydrate already present in your skin that declines with
age. The current trend in the use of fillers for facial rejuvenation
is that of revolumising. Placing dermal filler at key points in the
face can restore lost volume for a refreshed look. Fillers can
also be used to enhance your lips, cheek and chin.
Procedure:
The non-permanent gel is injected into the skin to physically lift
and sculpt it, correcting wrinkles, folds, scars and asymmetries
of the face.
You may experience some redness and swelling immediately
after treatment with possible mild bruising.
Dermal fillers contain local anaesthetic, so most people
experience minimal discomfort. Numbing cream can be used
to enhance comfort in sensitive areas such as the lips.
Outcome:
The results of filler can be seen immediately, but can take 4 to 6
weeks to settle into the final result. Hyaluranon fillers last between
6 and 24 months, depending on the filler used and the site.
Cost:
Cost varies according to the amount of filler used. Lip
enhancement, for example, can range from $400 to $750.
SKIN REJUVENATION AND
REHYDRATION USING THE
V2 SKIN BOOSTER
Description of the treatment:
The V2 Skin Booster utilises a new delivery device that enables
precise doses and placement of hyaluronic acid, antioxidants,
vitamins and minerals to the dermis of the skin. This
combination of active ingredients assists in the synthesis and
stimulation of collagen production and dermal restructuring,
resulting in beautifully hydrated, nourished, more youthful
glowing skin.
Procedure:
Using the V2 injector gun, Redensity 1 is injected into the
skin of the face, neck, or décolletage. The device is unique in
that it works by applying a light suction to the skin prior to
each injection, leading to a more comfortable and accurate
procedure. The procedure takes 30- 45 minutes and clients
experience minimal discomfort. The skin appears red and
bumpy for 24-48 hours. A course of three treatments spaced
three to four weeks apart is recommended, with a top-up
every 6 to 12 months.
Outcome:
Clients see results after the first treatment with ongoing
rejuvenation and regeneration occurring over time. Results
are impressive with reduction in fine lines and crepiness, and
a general improvement in skin texture and strength. The skin
looks and feels firmer and has a youthful glow.
Cost:
Face Value is offering a pre Cup Week special price of $1500
for the three-treatment course, a saving of $150.
Dr Philip Frost is a graduate of Otago School of Medicine, with
over 20 years’ experience in the specialty area of Appearance
and Cosmetic Medicine. He recommends with any medical
procedure that you have a comprehensive consultation and
assessment to develop an individual treatment plan with
education regarding products and procedures. At Face Value a
gradual, step-by-step treatment plan will be tailored individually.
